Events from 8/12 to 8/18/2005

Some liked the new format but most didn’t. So I guess I will switch back to the verbose format. But that doesn’t mean that I will always have events to write about. This week is a little like that. I could only find few events but they are all good – and you won’t find them in the Stranger or the Weekly.
My favorite is Identity on Wednesday followed by Roq La Rue on Friday.

Tattoo Convention

Seattle Spin writes:

Convention: Tattoo Convention, Aug 12th - 14th, cost varies. Years ago, tattoos used to be exotic, a sign of an alternative thinker. Now, tattoos have gone through their own inflationary cycle; everyone seems to have one now. So while their rebel status is way diluted, if you have ink on your body, or want ink, here's were you can compare notes and get new ideas on what to color your next patch of skin.

Worldwide @ Nectar

Another Special Editon of WORLDWIDE!
This month, the Worldwide band takes a seat and presents San Francisco latin rock heros Bat Makumba. The brainchild of Brazilian natives Alex Koberle and Emiliano Benevides, Bat Makumba is the crossroad between the traditional music of their equatorial homeland and the punk, rock and funk influences of the U.S. Locals to San Francisco, Bat Makumba's show is a hip renegade carnaval party full of tropicalia tinged ska, punk influenced forro, and rock infused samba. Bat Makumba's live show brings together an international palette of musicians and instrumentation (including accordion, zabumba, megaphone, clarinet and alfaia).

As always, SunTzu Sound will be on the decks to keep the party rockin'. Don't sleep!

“The Devil’s Hobby Hut” @ Roq La Rue http://www.roqlarue.com

The press release came with two of Charles Krafft’s pieces: “Springerle Bunny “ and “Mad Cow Creamer “. I really like the Mad Cow Creamer and I am sad that I will miss this opening.

Roq La Rue Gallery
Presents
“The Devil’s Hobby Hut”

Kreepy Kitsch by Charlie Krafft and Frank Kozik

Opens THIS FRIDAY August 12th 6-10pm

Roq la Rue is pleased to present “The Devil’s Hobby Hut” featuring recent work
by two of America’s most accomplished and provocative artists – Charles Krafft
and Frank Kozik. ?The show opens on Friday, August 12 from 6:00 to 10:00 PM at
Roq la Rue, 2316 2nd Avenue in Seattle’s lively Belltown neighborhood. The
exhibition continues through September 1, 2005. Cooling liquid refreshments will be available!

Charles Krafft is familiar to Northwest audiences, having exhibited widely
throughout the region for nearly four decades. A self taught painter and
ceramicist, Krafft is now best known for his Disaterware? plates, porcelain
weaponry, and SPONE?reliquaries made of human bone china, which have been
exhibited in galleries and museums throughout North America and Europe. This
exhibition will focus on new works created during a residency last fall at the
European Ceramic Work Centre (EKWC) in s’ Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.
Appropriating motifs associated with Delft souvenirs, Krafft created a series
of cow creamers, windmills, ashtrays and vases, employing his signature style
of Satanic irony, “The Dutch are very proud of their ceramics tradition and
weren’t thrilled with the way I play with it,” the artist reveals in the
current issue of Coagula arts journal. The work went over well, however,
during its debut at the Copro Nason Gallery in Los Angeles in June. “The
Devil’s Hobby Hut” will also include new pieces created at his studio in
Seattle, which pay homage to the imagery of his co-exhibitor, Frank Kozik. ?

Frank Kozik was born in Madrid, Spain in 1962. At the age of 14, he moved to
the United States and settled in Austin, Texas. Credited with single handedly
reviving the "lost" art of the concert poster, Kozik's creative career grew
largely out of his enthusiasm for Austin's growing alternative rock scene in
the mid-eighties. Starting with black and white flyers for friends’ bands
posted on telephone polls, his reputation rapidly grew as an artist whose work
was graphically compelling as well as culturally gripping. He has designed
hundreds of full-color, limited edition, silk-screened posters for such
renowned artists as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and The
Beastie Boys. He has also been the subject of many magazine articles including
Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Spin, and Details. His contribution to “The Devil’s
Hobby Hut” will feature an installation of 100 evil Kozik designed Japanese
“Dunnies” (robot-like toys), as well as recent works on paper. Currently based
in San Francisco, Kozik’s poster art will figure prominently in “The Art of
Modern Rock” exhibition at Bumbershoot over Labor Day weekend.
This exhibit will feature a large toy installation by Kozik as well as other assorted ephemera.

Rat City Roller Girls 2nd Annual Street Race and Block Party Fundraiser

I never drive to White Center. But I have to say that I got interested in this new “emerging neighborhood” after reading about a mother, who chopped off her daughter’s head in the bathtub, because she felt it was the only way to get rid of the demons that her daughter was possessed with. On one hand that is a terrible story on the other hand it does stimulate child exorcism tourism for White Center.

Identity (Washma’s Birthday Party) @ War Room

I met Washma this week. We took full advantage of Taco Night at the Wild Rose and while we were waiting for our food she told me about her birthday party at the War Room. She has spent a lot of time organizing it and she said that it will be her last big party – for a while. Her sister and she created a whole web site for it and you should check it out at www.washma.com .

So what is it about? Wazhma has been living in the United States for over 20 years and people would still come up to her and ask her where she is from, whether she had to wear a burqa etc. Sometimes she got compliments for how good her English was. To some degree I understand why this has been happening to her. She just looks very exotic. Washma’s “Identity” party is about living between two worlds without belonging to either of them.

The ten bucks cover charge will benefit Cherry Street Food Bank and will help her sister Gazelle doing her show with photos from Afghanistan.
I would come early because you don’t want to miss the burqa break dancing performance.

Cold Lava

GMP #21 (8/6/2005)

Hey Guerrillas!

Now that you've recovered from all that time travel, we want to thank
everyone for coming out Saturday night. We had a great time, and hope
y'all did too.

For those of you who missed the party, I'll try to recap the madcap
happenings...

Around 10pm, Guerrillas from every era of history began flooding into
the Pike Pub & Brewery, much to the confusion of the staff and
patrons. Guerrillas represented for periods as old as prehistory
(Fred Flintstone) and as recent as the 'Grunge' era (Kurt & Courtney).
And in between we had Ancient Egyptians and Greeks, a Medieval King,
a Victorian Gentleman, a 20's flapper, a poodleskirt clad 50's girl,
Nancy Sinatra, pill popping 70's throwbacks and many, many more. Not
to mention Time itself. And taking the Period pun to it's logically
dirty place, we had one giant, walking tampon. Dirty Bunny arrived
clad as Queen Elizabeth (a lifelong dream).

We were also joined by the Temple of Necronomiclown, who helped deck
out the crowd with balloon animal accessories.

This party also included a lot of new faces -- not the least of which
being a crowd of rowdy coworkers who helped keep GMP's dirty
reputation going. For (we believe) the first time ever, two people
switched clothes mid-party (with hilarious results); And, though not
for the first time, and probably not the last, lucky Guerrillas at our
second stop (The Nite Lite) received a striptease. Sadly,
photographic evidence was difficult to come by, as the staff of the
Nite Lite didn't take kindly to the show. In fact, the adorable South
African Viking and his fun friends were asked to leave after the
encore presentation. But hopefully we'll see them again soon.

Also falling prey to the laws of the Nite Lite were a number of folks
who left briefly to have a quick 'safety meeting' outside, and found
themselves unable to come back in after last call. Sorry kids!

Check out all the photos at: <http://www.gmpseattle.com/gallery/>

And stay tuned for plans for our next party!

Thanks!
