Seattle Spin writes:

Family Activity: Nighttime at the Beach, Jan 27th & 28th at Discovery Park and Camp Long, $8. The beach at night has its own little spooky feelings of intrigue and adventure. Explore the beach during the lowest tides of the winter with a flashlight and spot eerie bioluminescence creatures glowing back at you.

Be sure to bring a flashlight, dress for the weather, and wear rubber boots.

DOB - Date of Birth @ Open Circle Theater

This could be total crap. But maybe it won't be that bad. Sunday is pay-what-you-will day and that seems safe. Please send me a Cold Lava report if you go.

D.O.B. (Date of Birth)

Running Dates:
Jan. 27 - Feb. 25, 2006, Thu. - Sat.

Description:

Some birth records just can't be broken.

A world premiere by John Kaufmann.

In 1970, a six year-old girl makes a cassette tape on the day her brother is born. Thirty-five years later, that brother visits her and records the birth of her first child. Created from these original recordings, D.O.B. uses verbatim texts, jumps in time, and an ensemble of seven actors to take the audience on a whirl-wind ride through the joy, agony, and absurdity of a first birthday. Conceived and directed by John Kaufmann (Starball, Line One, The Perception Project) D.O.B. is a chronicle of a family over time brought together through the chaos of birth.

Runs Jan. 27 - Feb. 25,
Thu. - Sat. @ 8pm
Sun. 2/19 @ 4pm

Tickets $12
All Thursdays are two-for-one.
Sunday 2/19 is pay-what-you-will.

For reservations call (206) 382-4250

Fashion Ball @ Nectar Lounge

Another tip from Seattle Spin:

Fashion: Fashion Ball at Nectar Lounge, Jan 27th, $5. Four designers and four DJs mix the night modeling gowns and club wear. If you're 20-something with a decent body, then this show is up your alley.

Palm-Wine Drinkards live at Fenomena

James, the Whetzel, writes:

Ladies and Gents.

I hope you are doing well. Here is the lowdown on a show I am doing with The Palm-Wine Drinkards this Friday, January 27th!

Best musical regards!

James Whetzel

The Palm-Wine Drinkards live at Fenomena, Friday, January 27th 8:30pm

The Palm-Wine Drinkards play African palm-wine music, from deep traditional palm-wine grooves, to brand new palm-wine songs.

The group features James Whetzel aka Baba James on guitar and vocals. On the African drums, the group features Ghanaian master percussionist Yaw Asare, and tasty international percussionist Hanafi Sahib.

Palm-wine music comes from Ghana, Nigeria , Liberia and Sierra Leone . Encompassing a rich variety of styles and rhythms the sound is elegantly danceable, and lyrically supple. Palm-wine is funky yet soft and sweet.

Traditionally the palm-wine guitarist sings as people gather to hang out and drink palm-wine. Songs might be about anything. Often the words tend towards a humorous examination of the events of the day, or a distillation of pithy bits of Zen-like wisdom and philosophy. Who can say what a palm-wine guitarist will sing?

Like Palm-Wine itself, Palm-Wine music is best enjoyed fresh. Come out and get a healthy serving of excellent beats and times direct from The Palm-Wine Drinkards.

WWW.SEATTLE-PEOPLE.COM PARTY @ The Garage

I think you need to RSVP or join that list.

Hi everyone,

If you're wondering why you got this it's because either I know you or someone on the list knows you and thought, Hey...it would be good to add you to come out with us.

We planned this as a two step event so that those who just want some dinner can come out for the first step, or those that just want to dance can come out for the second step. (Hopefully we'll see most of you at both steps) :-)

Step One!!! (7-9ish)

For Dinner we'll start at "The Garage" (address is on the evite). It's a great pool hall/bar/resturant with plenty of room to accomodate a large undetermined ammount of people (which is good for this group). If you know of any other resturants like this for future events let us know either by group posts or shoot us an e-mail at info@seattle-people.com.

Step two!!! (9-whenever)
For the remainder of the night we'll be down one block dancing at "Neumos" (925 East Pike Street). A live band is playing that night...so...depending on how good they are we'll either stay there or may wonder down to "Chop Suey" (1325 E Madison St) or "The Baltic Room" (1207 Pine St).

Either way you'll be able to find us since we'll be the ones with the glow bracelets on. :-)

If you come late and can't find us give 206-579-6927 a call and one of us will answer it and give you directions to our location.

If you want to invite anyone else feel free by inviting them thru the evite or by sending them this link:
http://www.evite.com/admin@seattle-people.com/Jan-28
...and they can add themselves. :-)

See you there!!!

Charlie Drown at the Catbox (Tacoma).

John writes:

You simply MUST drive to Tacoma for this. Charlie Drown at the Catbox.
This is the hardest rocking woman in the edgy rock genre of the Pacific
Northwest end of the music biz. and, I'm going to be there to light
it, so you can be assured that it will be an all out assault on your
senses.

Oh, and thank you to Party Volcano for mentioning this list last week.
We have a number of new members as a result of that post. Welcome to
all of you.

As usual, if you know anyone else that wants to hear about local shows,
have them send me an email. I'll be happy to add them.
And, if you no longer want to receive these updates, drop me a line,
and I'll be happy to drop you.

John.

I am not sure whether I really need to go to Tacoma for this show. Tacoma stinks. When my girlfriend and I drove to Oregon a few months ago, we took Joe (our puppy) with us. After about 15 minutes he vomited of course, because he was not used to the noise and shaking that comes with being in a car. Later I thought his guts were still disheveled. I thought he had some sort of bad gas by judging the terrible smell that was spreading in the car. Until I realized we just entered TACOMA!

Guerrilla Masquerade Party #23: OUTLAWED

Hey Guerrillas!

Judge Alito's nomination to the Supreme Court is being opposed by
Democrats, a man was freed after 24 years in jail thanks to DNA
evidence, and the next Guerrilla Masquerade Party, 'Outlawed!', is
less than a week away! Have you stolen* your costume yet?

This Saturday, January 28th, we'll all be heading to a new
jurisdiction to celebrate lawmakers and lawbreakers - The People's
Republic of Fremont. At 10pm, we'll be taking over the George &
Dragon Pub at 206 North 36th Street. Later in the evening, we may
head out en masse to another local hotspot... yet to be determined.

So get out your rulebooks, make sure your lawyer's number is on speed
dial, and join us for 'OUTLAWED!' this Saturday night at 10pm.

And if you're travelling to Fremont from another Seattle neighborhood,
be sure to pick a designated driver or take a taxi -- Drinking &
Driving isn't a law we want you breaking.

See ya then!

dirty bunny
Guerrilla Masquerade Party
http://www.gmpseattle.com

*Not that we condone that sort of behavior. We're good law-abiding
Guerrillas, just looking for a good time.

You want to know more? - Here you go:

This past year, Martha Stewart returned from jail, and Lil' Kim got
sent up the river. Gay Marriage was outlawed in some states and (on
the other side of the political coin) teaching 'Intelligent Design'
was given a smack down in a Pennsylvania court. Distances seemed to
play a big role in outlawed activities this year, too -- from the 25
feet you have to walk away from bars & businesses to smoke, to the
4-foot distance required between patrons and performers at Seattle
strip clubs (not to mention the full lighting and tip jar rules).

We also thought a lot these past 12 months about one of our big
inspirations: The so-called 'Outlaw Parties' thrown by Michael Alig
and the notorious Club Kids of NYC in the late 20th century. They used
to dress up in wild costumes and show up unexpectedly in restaurants,
on subway trains, and at other public locations. Sound familiar? It
should.

So in honor of this one word, and all it means, we'll begin 2006 with
"OUTLAWED!" - a party on Saturday, January 28th to celebrate laws,
lawmakers, and lawbreakers. Have you been naughty?

With so many rules on the books, there's so much costume fodder to
choose from! Come as an orange jumpsuit clad criminal or wear the
proud blue uniform of a police officer. You could dress as one of the
cast of Law & Order, or CSI. Represent a little known local ordinance,
like the 6-month jail term a woman faces for sitting on a man's lap
(without a pillow in between) on a Seattle bus... or the law against
pretending your parents are rich in the state of Washington. And you
can always pay homage to our freaky forefathers and come in your best
Club Kid gettup! Check out Party Monster: The Shockumentary for
inspiration.

Hell, why not show up as a married gay, chain-smoking, Creationist
stripper and sit on someone's lap while claiming Bill Gates is your Dad!

Opening @ Soil

Ok, this time I will go. After downgrading SOIL for almost a year I am taking Steve Miller's advice and see a SOIL show. This one doesn't look too bad. They better start rolling the Sushi - because judging art is all about the snacks: Good snacks, good art. Bad snacks, bad art.

Satomi Jin

Plants grow and live certainly and invisibly. They are quiet but
determined. My work is focused on the essence of a six hundred years
old tree, onion cells under microscope, and blackberry bushes around
Seattle. A simple individual can create a complex structure for the
larger system. I choose to use a simple, repeated shape and color to
achieve the similarity, or the sameness.

Isaac Layman

Layman's color photographs explore the material aesthetics of
utilitarian objects. Constructing rudimentary temporary sculptures with
plywood, extension cords, and the like, Layman's work creates a
sophisticated visual play revealing textural qualities, elegance of
line, and intriguing color fields not commonly associated with these
objects.

Chauney Peck

Last spring a ski resort in the Swiss Alps covered their snowcap in a
large insulating blanket to prevent it from melting. Their idea to
preserve the mountain's snow and the region's economy was a success.
It seems our interactions with climate and environment are changing and
inspiring new adaptations.

Once mountain caves were sought as basic shelters. We now seek refuge
in mountains for pleasure and play. Rather than hiding under them, we
are taking caring them, and playing on top of them. And we use gor-tex
tents and super waxed skis. Packaging the snow reserve in Gemsstock,
Switzerland is like canning cherries for a different time of year.

Mountain Melt Away was constructed spontaneously as a response to the
story in Switzerland. I used materials familiar to me- spinnaker
cloth, vinyl and wood. I personified the mountain, like a freshly
wrapped newborn in a blanket. You can crawl inside the mountain like a
tent, choosing to be nurtured or to explore.

Boyzie Cekwana (South Africa/dance) @ OtB

OtB is presenting the West Coast debut of award-winning South African choreographer Boyzie Cekwana at OtB Feb 2-5th. I really want to encourage anyone interested in dance to attend this show—I think this is going to be one of our most charged dance events of the year.

Boyzie Cekwana is one of the leading choreographers in South Africa and this show is part of his first US tour. Hailed as a "wunderkind" of South African dance, Cekwana combines Western choreography with the music, style, and energy of African dance to create technically rigorous and widely celebrated work that comments on extreme social and cultural issues in his country today.

His company, the floating outfit project, is dedicated to collaborations with international artists and non-artists and they integrate strong social and political content into their dance. At OtB the company will perform 2 works, Ja,nee and Rona, reflecting on South African spirituality and the male identity in post-apartheid society.

On Feb 2nd we are partnering with the Simpson Center at UW to present a pre-show talk at 7pm will be about the effects of apartheid, and an opening night post-show Q&A with the company.

Letters to the Editor

RE: Swedish Firemen (PV's Computer Corner 1/20//2006)

Part of an email from a Swede...

Where did you find this. . .can't imagine what you were googling about.

It's photos of 2001 calendar "Firemen with claws" of firemen with their own
cats. So under each picture is the name of the fireman and the name of
their cat including what kind of cat it is.

So there you go.
Thanks for your fun emails!

Thor

Thanks Thor!

Here is the link again for our PV readers that might have missed it last week:

Swedish Firemen with Cats?
http://aftonbladet.se/kvinna/0011/22/21BRANDMAN.html

Another friend of mine from Germany wrote: "lidt travlt, altsaa paa tysk!"
That was very helpful. But he also mentioned that a friend of his is a translator and she thinks that this site shows a traditional Swedish calendar with firemen and their cats.

Don Volcano’s Computer Corner.

Are you familiar with Ricky Gervais's podcast? Okay, maybe I need to back up: Ricky Gervais is the brilliant guy, who invented the original BBC series The Office with his buddy Steve Merchant. They went on and produced Extras for the BBC last year, which is even better in my opinion. But they also started a podcast, which you can sign up here:

Ricky Gervais podcast
http://www.rickygervais.com/podcast.php

The reason why I am pointing out this podcast to you is, because it's the funniest podcast I know of. The last episode (#8) made me laugh hard. What is this podcast about? Ricky Gervais and Steve Merchant make fun of Karl Pilkington - a friend of them. They actually don't have to do much. Just asking some questions about life is enough. Karl's innocent answers will take you into a strange world.

Who is Karl Pilkington?
http://www.rickygervais.com/karlpilkington.php

In episode #8 Karl is reading from his travel diary and it is incredibly funny - at least I can laugh about it:

Karl's diary (Episode #8)
http://www.rickygervais.com/images/karlsdiary1.jpg
http://www.rickygervais.com/images/karlsdiary2.jpg

Let me quote from it:

Had pie and chips in a café. Had a bit of an argument with Suzanne cos I thought it was daft that we were daying for food when we were on an all exclusive... Changed my mind when I saw they sold pie though. The café was called "Tatoos". The fella who owned it didn't have any tatoos... Bot we never saw his wife.
