Based upon the success of last year’s convention, we are proud to continue cataloging the progress of Tattoo Art in the Northwest, as well as around the country. Seth writes:

Hello friends,

I wanted to send a quick shout out, first of all to thank everyone that made
it to Natural Mystic this last weekend. That was one of the most amazing
parties I've been a part of yet! The vibe was thick all night, so beautiful!!
If you didn't make it and still want to get your outdoor camping style on,
there's yet another outdoor party happenin' this weekend! It's a smaller
affair, not quite as loud, and not far from the Natural Mystic site. Here's
a link to thee nwtekno post:
http://www.nwtekno.org/vb/showthread.php?s=0369b765d12b184d75072ee1e9b3120f&threadid=100669

Don't forget to check out the upcoming events at the end ov this email...

In this message you will find info on this weekend's camping get-together,
featuring music by Jen Woolfe, Manos, William Mempa, Gel-Sol, Cory Ley,
Adlib, Trevor, Recess, Menami and others! We've included directions, a basic
list of things to bring, and a description of
what to expect over the weekend.

DIRECTIONS FROM DOWNTOWN SEATTLE:
- Take 520 or I-90 East to 405 north.
- Take 405 North to Woodenville.
- take 522 East to Monroe.
- Take a left onto HWY 2 East, Stevens Pass HWY.
- Stay on HWY 2 through Gold Bar, Index and Skykomish.
- Turn right onto Foss River Road, approximately 2 miles past
Skykomish.
- Stay on the road past the one-lane bridge
- Go right at the "Y" where the road turns to dirt.
- Stay Right on National Forest Road 68, follow for several miles.
- Stay right at the intersection with Maloney Mountain Road.
- You will be going uphill for quite a while.
- turn left on NFR 6846, at the top of the hill.
- Stay on main road till it ends, approximately 2 more miles.

WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU:
This is NOT a campground. It is forest service land, which means that
camping is legal, but it also means there are no toilets, food or water
facilities. Come prepared with food, potable water, beer, toiletries,
flashlights, sunscreen, bug repellant and anything else you would need for a
normal camping trip or all night techno dance rave party event thing. Bring
clothing for all summer/fall weather conditions. We anticipate the weather
being in the hi 70s and low 80s in the daytime and in the mid 50s in the
evenings. There is a small chance of rain for Friday night, but not really
for Saturday. Bring sweatshirts, rain flies and good shoes. There are some
good hiking trails right around the clearing we are using, so please bring
some hiking boots if you've got 'em!

WHAT TO EXPECT:
This is going to be an campout with a small sound system and some of
Seattle's best DJs in a beautiful, intimate location. Space is extremely
limited, so please carpool and "tentpool" if you can. We are expecting
around 30-40 people to be coming over the weekend, some on Friday, some on
Saturday and some for the full time. This number assumes that everyone
getting this message will be bringing a few people with them, so don't feel
discouraged from inviting a couple friends along with you!

I hope you can make it, I'll be bringing thee phreaks to tha floor around
midnight-ish, Saturday night.

"Undertow 2" @ Roq la Rue

Roq la Rue presents
"Undertow 2"
curated by Alix Sloan

opens FRIDAY August 11th 6-9pm
runs through Sept 8th

Roq la Rue Gallery is pleased to present a show of contemporary figurative paintings all based on the enigmatic idea of "the moment before something happens."

“In this culture of fear - and fantasy - we are being fed a steady diet of anticipation. What will tomorrow bring? Will something terrible happen? Or will forces beyond my control magically descend and fix my life?”

Curator Alix Sloan (former director at L.A.'s La Luz De Jesus, former consultant for Mark Ryden, Eric White, and The Clayton Bros) has always been fascinated by work with a sense of mystery and anticipation, the feeling that one doesn’t know what’s really happening or what is about to happen. From Edvard Munch to Edward Hopper to John Currin, figurative painters have long been exploring this powerful mood. In recent years Ms. Sloan has observed, in the works of various artists across a wide range of media, both blatantly or subtly expressed, what she views as an increasingly heightened sense of foreboding, an undercurrent of tension. With this exhibition she questions if that phenomenon isn’t simply the artists’ documentation of our time.

Curator’s Statement:
“In this culture of fear - and fantasy - we are being fed a steady diet of anticipation. What will tomorrow bring? Will something terrible happen? Will forces beyond my control magically descend and fix my life? Or destroy it? Child molesters. Serial killers. True love. Terrorists. Terminal illness. Natural disasters. The Lotto. Horror, hope and mixed messages barrage us incessantly and perpetuate a palpable state of apprehension. Even those who choose to live with their heads in the sand about the environment, economy or politics, are on the edge of their seats waiting to find out: Who Will Be America’s Next Top Model?

It’s been said that too few contemporary artists are creating art with a message relevant to our time. I disagree. Art reflects its time. As I view work in a variety of media by an assortment of artists, I’m aware of an increasing sense of foreboding, an undercurrent of tension; which strikes me as one of the most relevant, and honest, commentaries one could make.

With Undertow I wanted to address this feeling directly by exploring the moment in time when a narrative is about to change, or is changing, that feeling of anticipation, be it real or imagined, fearful or joyous, internal or explosive. The works in this exhibition are more than well-crafted, thoughtful paintings. They are an historical record, visual documentation of the tension and uncertainty of our age.?-- Alix Sloan

CRESCENDO FALLS 4: CATACOMB-OVER
Written by: Kevin Hammonds
Directed by: Erik Hill

About the Show:

Step into a city full of beauty, power, lies and seduction. Step into Crescendo Falls. Enter a world where people play for keeps, and will stop at nothing to get exactly what they want even if it involves a turkey baster or a roll in the hay with their sister. This fictional metropolis of Crescendo Falls thrives on the decadent affairs and backstabbing antics of its beautiful but deadly residents.

Crescendo Records is thrown into a chaotic power struggle with the death of R.J. Covington, its founding owner. Watch as this dysfunctional family bed-hops and backstabs in a brawl for control over the billion dollar company. These citizens really know how to live-up to the town's motto: Crescendo Falls – Beautiful People, Ugly Town.

Let me guess: Eurovision 2006 was probably not on your radar. If you are not from Europe Eurovision doesn't mean anything - and if you are from Europe it means even less. Eurovision is an annual song contest of Europe's countries. During the year every county votes for their best band or artist and then send her, or him, or them to the Eurovision to compete with the "best" from other European countries. Well, I had to put "best" in quotes, because they are all bad.

The whole event is not worth mentioning but this year something very unusual happened. BBC reported that "A Finnish 'horror rock' group who dress in monster costumes have pulled off a surprise win at the 51st Eurovision Song Contest in Athens".

Finnish monsters rock Eurovision
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/4998186.stm

I wanted to see that:

Lordi's "Hard Rock Hallelujah"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArKBlTPtpkg

It's hard to watch but you have to wait until 2:00 into the video, because that's when Lordi spreads his wings. What a show. Even Lordi is surprised that they won the stupid contest:

"We are a rock band and we just won Eurovision - that's weird," their lead singer, also called Lordi, said. "This was a victory for rock music and also a victory for open-mindedness."

I couldn't agree more.

Don Volcano.
