cool shorts and an incredible Feature, Quality of Life. We also still

NOW ABOUT UNIPLEX v.1:

BLVD Gallery is proud to announce the UniPlex Film Series, an evening
of films by, about, and featuring the best of the Urban Contemporary
art movement. Uniplex is an effort to bring a greater understanding to
the general public of what has become the most influential global art
movement of the 21st century, Urban/Street art . The first installment
in the series features two short films, Fish Tales and Barnstormers
360, and the feature film Quality of Life.

About the films:

Quality of Life (2005) by Benjamin Morgan; starring Brian Burnam and
Lane Garrison
http://www.qualityoflife-themovie.com/
Meet Michael "Heir" Rosario and Curtis "Vain" Smith, the most prolific
and talented graffiti writers from the Mission District in San
Francisco. At age ten, in a desperate search for fame and identity, the
young friends began writing their names on surrounding urban
landscapes. More than a decade later, the duo have evolved into a
brilliant team of street artists. The two have covertly decorated the
canvases of concrete and steel throughout the Bay Area. However, when
Heir and Vain are arrested for painting, their secret identities are
revealed and creative outlets are abruptly severed.

Barnstormers 360 (2006) by The Barnstormers
http://www.b-stormers.com/
Filmed in 2004 in Cameron, NC and the Southeast Center for Contemporary
Art in Winston-Salem, NC, this 30-minute DVD captures the Barnstormers
disassembly of a 1930s era 16 x 16 x 23 foot tobacco barn, its
reassembly in the museum, the painting of over twenty murals on its
side, and its eventual reconstruction in Cameron.
Artists include David Ellis, Mike Houston,. Martin Mazorra, Chuck
Webster, Kami, Maya Hayuk, Swoon, Sasu, West One, Jose Parla, and many others.

Out of the seven time-lapse films the Barnstormers have done, this
represents the most ambitious effort to date, combining carpentry and
painting, both indoors and outdoors.
With a soundtrack performed by the Barnstormers and special guests

Fish Tales (2006) by Eric Noren, Jeremy Fish
http://www.eyebooger.com/
A tale of epic proportions about an infamous Urban Fisherman scouring the
streets of San Francisco for his fabled dream catch, The one that got
away. Come with us on a journey that turns the city upside-down to find
the worlds first skateable fish.
Skateable fish? Yeah thats right! Can you actually bomb hills on a fish?
Can a nollie nose-manual at 3rd and Army actually be done with rubber
pants? If you switch back-tail a ledge, do you need to ride the board
backwards because fish lips are too slippery? Will any other skate super
heroes be encountered? Sit back and enjoy.

Directed by independent film maker Eric Noren and scored to an original
song by Aesop Rock, Fishtales is the brainchild of Jeremy Fish and
was created to accompany a board series that he made for Element
Skateboards.

Man Push Cart @ Broadway Performance Hall

Arab Film Distribution and the 3rd Annual Independent South Asian Film Festival are proud to announce...

Friday Sept 29th - 7pm
Man Push Cart
(Ramin Bahrani, Pakistan/USA, 2005, 87min, 35mm)

The image “http://typecastfilms.com/announcements/manpushcart.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Man Push Cart tells the story of Ahmad (Ahmad Razvi) a former Pakistani rock singer who ekes out a living selling coffee and donuts to morning commuters from his push cart in Midtown Manhattan. It is a harsh, often humiliating life, but Ahmad carries on with a stoic dignity and sensitivity, seemingly determined to find his way. Then the dull routine of his life is brightened by two developments: the arrival of a young Spanish woman (Leticia Dolera) working down the street in a newspaper kiosk; and an offer of assistance from a wealthy fellow Pakistani (Charles Daniel Sandoval), who remembers Ahmad's former life as a rock star.

"...among the most striking American independent movies of the past year." -New York Times, Dennis Lim

"I loved it...it is an experience." -Chicago-Sun Times, Roger Ebert

"The best fiction entries at Sundance '06" -Village Voice, Dennis Lim

"...the first New York Filmmaker to break out at this year's Sundance." -New York Magazine, Logan Hill

"The first-time performance of Ahmad Razvi as one of the guys you might be buying your coffee and bagel from out of a polished aluminum cart is utterly heart-wrenching." -Premiere

"Beautifully acted and directed, with top-notch cinematography by Michael Simmonds, this effort transforms one soul's grief and despair into a luminous journey." -indieWIRE

Sponsored by Arab Film Distribution

"Man Push Cart" is a program of Seattle's 3rd Independent South Asian Film Festival (ISAFF) taking place at the Broadway Performance Hall, 1625 Broadway, Seattle. The Bike Bin Project

Have you ever rented one of those mp3 players that gently guide you through the museum, because you felt the paintings look like gift wrap paper and that pile of crap in the corner can't be an art piece until you notice the plaque on the wall?
Well, the Bike Bin Project offers something similar for Seattle:

The Bike Bin Project is a bicycle tour of Seattle from the constrained perspectives of several of Seattle's most iconoclastic and brilliant composers. Each composer has assigned an exact time and exact place for their piece to be experienced. The listener downloads, ventures to these specific places and times, and listens.

I think it is worth checking out - even though the one mp3 museum tour I took could not convince me that the show was more than only gift wrap paper and piles of crap.

The Bike Bin Project:

A fascinating bicycle tour guided by Seattle 's new music vanguards

WHERE: Every nook and cranny of weird and gorgeous Seattle

WHEN: Composer's choice

HOW: Go to The Bike Bin Project on Platial OR www.thebikebinproject.com for the full scoop

FEATURING:

Mike Min (Seattle School), Wally Shoup, Amy Denio, Rob Millis (Climax Golden Twins), Joshua Kohl (Degenerate Art Ensemble), Kazu Nomura (Na), Kris Moon, Chris Delaurenti, Doug Haire, Tom Baker, Stuart McLeod (SIL2K) Joshua Parmenter, Paris Hurley, Carl Farrow (inBoil), James Drage (Ota Prota), Stephen Parris (Monktail Creative Music Concern), Erik Aho, Ben Houge, and introducing Korby Sears (Seattle School) as Unkie Biscuit.

Query: What does everyone ultimately yearn for? Posit: When you're illegally climbing the water tower in Volunteer Park at 3 AM, you're probably thinking - "Melvin Crunken Gibson! I wish I'd commissioned a brilliant piece of new music from one of Seattle 's maverick composers, to which I could listen and ponder profound upon this exact circumstance. 'Twould be splendid accompaniment indeed, as I regard the scampering junkies and foliage-soiling couples." Salvation: Enter the Bike Bin Project! [Insert tiger roar here.]

Several iconoclastic composers have created compelling works specifically intended to be experienced at an exact time and place in Seattle . The listener downloads the pieces, goes to the specified location and time, and experiences the music in concert with the aleatoric environment of the composer's "design". Want to literally know how the composer wants you to see, smell, and feel during his/her/hes/hir piece? The Bike Bin Project delivers. It's like liner notes times a gajillion. With firecrackers. On a plane.

The obvious next question is: Well, it would be more compelling if the composers had constraints in their creation process. Response: That's not a question. And besides, who said the composers didn't have constraints? In fact, who said the composers didn't have to follow an odd and abstract process? A process so grueling and humiliating that a few swore to never compose again? The last part is false, but let me assure you that the composers were presented with a unique set of constraints which required them to vigorously flex their creativity muscles. Read more about the process at www.thebikebinproject.com. And let me assure you that what they produced from those constraints is nothing short of breathtaking. I assure you. I'm Mike Min and I approve this press release.

So go now to The Bike Bin Project on Platial OR www.thebikebinproject.com. Download the music and enjoy Seattle before the full weight of autumn descends. And tell your friends. And be our friend at www.myspace.com/bikebin.

5th annual Visible Lingerie Party @ The Brick House.

The Brick House used to have fantastic parties. I am not sure whether they are still having them and I am not invited anymore, or whether Jon has become just to busy since she opened Retrofit with a friend.

First I thought this will be a private party but I got permission from Jon to post it in this edition of Party Volcano. This is a benefit for Room to Read; organization that builds schools (among other things) in 3rd world countries (see www.roomtoread.com).

Weeeeeeeeellll,
After a shocking three year hiatus the 'Visible Lingerie Party' is back.

I can't wait to see what you'll do!
(even if it's a pair of underwear on your head)

Sunday, 10/1

International Day of Older Persons

I couldn't resist posting this one from Seattle Spin:

Senior Activity: Anti-Aging Week, for folks 50 and over, Sept 25th - Oct 1st, a week worth of free classes for folks who are going to live forever or die trying. It's management of chronic diseases, prevention of obesity and those hip breaking falls, and protection from cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, and other old-age nasties.

Turns out that Sunday is the International Day of Older Persons. I didn't know that the UN has time for this. I thought they are pretty busy writing letters like: "We hereby strongly object that you invaded the county of X."

Either way, let's here how the UN's bureaucrats handle International Day of Older Persons:

The General Assembly designated 1 October the International Day of Older Persons by resolution 45/106 of 14 December 1990, following up on initiatives such as the Vienna International Plan of Action on Ageing, adopted by the 1982 World Assembly on Ageing and endorsed later that year by the General Assembly.

Ah, I see.

The Snake Pit Free Bar at the infamous POOL YARD

We missed the openeing party last week. But the event itself is every week.

Nate the Snake, and James the Dessert Rat write:

The Snake Pit Free Bar at THE POOL YARD

You are so totally invited to the pre grand opening party of the Snake Pit this Wednesday September 27, 2006.

What is the Snake Pit? The Snake Pit is a Community-Based Free (yes I said FREE) Bar!!

The Snake pit will be open as a free bar every Wednesday rain or shine. What the hell even snow. Now get this fun little twist: The snake pit will be an OUTSIDE bar with POOL TABELS, AIR HOCKEY and who knows what else. Crazy, huh?! The Snake Pit is a community place for the friends of Nate and James, and friends of friends. Think of late night putt putt golf, but with better music, no golf, pool tables, air hocky, a free late night bar and lots and lots of atmosphere (like I said, it is ouside) -- now you've gotta see this!

So -- How the heck does a FREE BAR work in the real world???

Well, if you want to be part of this community bar simply bring a beverage (or several) of your choice (unopened please), and gleefully donate it to the beautiful bartender of the night to enjoy and share it with your friends. The beautiful bartender (week one: Stacy Secretary of SASS and Elisabeth Queen of the Ride) will then serve it to you and your other friends completly free of charge!!!! Snake and /dRAT will personally insure there is always someting to start with.

You now are part of the only community based free bar in the greater Seattle area.

No worries, if you don't bring a beverage enjoy what we have!! Everyone is welcome! This is an radical experimental community every Wednesday night ...

Any remaining donations of beverages will be available the following Wednesday and so on.

Sick of commercialism? Be a part of the Snake Pit!

This is a 21 and over party ID required, and drug free (esp because it is outside), however tobacco smoking and copious drinking are highly encouraged.

8pm till ? Every Wednesday.

photo: detail of Floating World #1, 2006, Saya Moriyasu

Katie Kurt's writing about Saya's work:

The original materials for chandeliers were planks of spiked wood, candles, a hook in the ceiling, and a rope. Built as purely functional objects in the Middle Ages, they helped illuminate large, chilly stone churches. Then the wealthy and the craftsmen got hold of them and chandeliers became elaborate beyond necessity, a common trajectory for the life of a functional object. Fast-forward a few centuries and the functional object (at least what we have come to think of as such, this term is increasingly debatable in a hyper-capitalist context) is built on failure and disposability. That is, objects are made with planned or stylistic obsolescence (pink refrigerators, iPod’s with irreplaceable batteries, a new season of fashion, and so on). Art enters somewhere in here and it is this space – between the functional and decorative, the necessity and the indulgence, the high and the low – that Saya Moriyasu explores. The Buddhist perspective she inherited from her father (also an artist) lends a spiritual dimension to this line of inquiry that Moriyasu has sustained through several bodies of work. Functional lamps stacked high in the center of a gallery resemble both department store displays and altars, elegies to service workers memorialize their ghostly, transitory presence at banquet halls, and a “floating world” of ceramic sculptures is created literally and metaphorically atop planks of wood.
