The opening was already on Wed 4/6 but the show will be up until 4/28 and I think it is worth seeing:

AIDS Is Knocking will be on display in the Research & Training Building from April 6-28. The photos show the courage and determination of Rabuors people who struggle to survive the poverty and devastation of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa while keeping their hopes alive. The event is produced by the Harborview Art Program and the Harborview Center for AIDS Research, in cooperation with Koster, the Rabuor Village Project and the North American Western Regional Conference on Public Health Research and STD/HIV. For more information, contact Peggy Weiss, art program manager, at pweiss@u.washington.edu. ***press welcome*** You may meet the artist at 5 p.m., Thursday, April 6 in the lobby and auditorium of the R&T Building. The exhibit and event are free and open to the public.

In addition: Students at the Hutch School (of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle USA) will be spending time at Harborview with the photographs, the artist, and scholars and scientists to learn about this worldwide crisis. They selected AIDS Is Knocking from among dozens of possible exhibitions for their project.

Rope Bondage Beyond the Cuff

Some of you might be into this...

Rope Bondage Beyond the Cuff With Punzel

Friday April 7th 8-10 pm
School of One 3107 Eastlake Ave. East
$20 suggested donation no one turned away for lack of funds

Rope bondage doesn't have to be difficult to be incredibly erotic and beautiful! Come talk about the possibilities and learn some attractive, understandable techniques for binding the body, for restraint or sensual decoration, with body wraps as corsets, hobble skirts, gauntlets and pony wraps. Be a rope maestro through creative application and confidence in your own sense of style rather than from exotic, specialized or complicated ties. We'll practice, so bring partners if you have them, and rope if you have it (at least two 15-25 foot, one 35-50 foot). Extra rope will be available. Unaccompanied folks are also welcome, even if you're shy! (some of these ties can be practiced on your own body or a willing piece of furniture). Basic rope experience recommended but not required.

Film, Faith, and Justice @ SPU

Seattle Spin writes:

Film: Film, Faith, and Justice, April 7-9th, $10, a film festival by Human Rights Watch International, featuring documentaries on contemporary social justice issues. These are all good films, but they're all more emotionally heavy than listening to NPR news for 90 minutes.

FRONTAL FLATNESS: Cross Country & Multi-Media

Artist Reception: hosted by W Seattle as part of its WHITESPACE series
April 8, 2006, 7 – 9 PM
complimentary light hors d’oeuvres and cash bars

Frontal Flatness, curated by Dino Martini, is a brief exploration of the current state of Pop Art. Comprising media from paintings on canvas to video and installation, Frontal Flatness serves up the scourging wit lurking in the common as well as the intoxicating swoon of the foreign. Martini has gathered artists from NYC and LA as well as showcasing the high level of work being produced by Seattle area artists. Among many others, Martini is exhibiting works by Peter Bill (NYC), Neil Chowdhury (Dubai) Thomas Cieciorka (Chicago), Chris Crites (Seattle), Stephanie DiRicco (Seattle), Scott Foldesi (Seattl), Trek Kelly (LA), and Randy McCoy (Seattle), Patrice Tullai (Seattle).

Martini describes his project: “Pop Art is about the use of mass media and mass-produced products and how we experience them in our everyday life. But it is also about the elements of merchandising in the art world. By definition, any work that claims to be Pop Art is suspicious of itself and any venue that might show it. So it is full of wit, with social and cultural criticism, insights about the art world and the art market. While much of it is biting wit, at its best, it is art that can poke fun at itself.”

Pop Art has always been driven by notions of environment and societal production. In other words, it is focused on how culture happens: the production, consumption and distribution of culture (to borrow a “social” list). The goal of this exhibition is relatively simple: to show how Pop Art thrives in contemporary imagery; to grant the viewers unobstructed views of everyday objects amidst untainted surroundings, and to offer an unapologetic approach to reductive art.

While to the viewer, many of the objects in the exhibition may appear superficially simple, they become works of art and often find deep complexity through the artist’s intervention, such as the seemingly obsessive insistence of “Smokestack” by Stephanie DiRiccio. The artist constructs a 6’ installation sculpture of stacked cigarette cartons. It is a work that presents smoking as a cumulative process. Martini muses: “The physical presence of the sculpture is mind-boggling: to see so many cigarette packs gathered by a single person brings questions to mind of time, cost, health affects, and, of course, brand loyalty.”

WHITESPACE is part of an evolving exhibition space within selected W Hotels Worldwide properties, dedicated to showing new and emerging art.
