Events for 9/15 - 9/21/2006

I am still traveling but I can at least send you this short list. Actually I couldn't find more events for this week. There is a Bordello of Dolls Amateur Contest at the Vogue on Tue and SOUL OF A WHORE at Theater Schmeater. Both events will probably be terrible and deserve downgrades.

This week's Computer Corner will feature the annual PV Fall Fashion Edition.

The exhibition at Roq la Rue opens on Friday, September 15 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM
with a gala Tiki party featuring the exotic bossa nova beat of Lushy and
esoteric Tiki tunes mixed by DJ Selector Lopaka. A delightfully kitschy Tiki mug has been
produced for the show, and the full color catalogue will be available for the
first time. The curator and many exhibiting artists will be in attendance to
sign the book. Admission is free. The exhibition continues through October 9,
2006.

Otto von Stroheim, publisher of Tiki News, has selected some of the most
innovative artists from across the U. S., Canada, Japan and Germany to examine
this anachronistic aesthetic in a new light. The Tiki Art Now! exhibition and
companion catalogue makes its debut at Roq la Rue Gallery in Seattle on Friday,
September 15 with a festive opening featuring art, music and more.

The show features original new works by Shag, Lisa Petrucci, Bosko, Tim Biskup,
Mr. G, Brian Barneclo, Wayne Coombs, Davey (Dave Wong), Crazy Al Evans, Dawn
Frasier, Thorsten Hasenkamm, Munktiki Paul & Stuckie, Tiki Tony, Heather Watts,
and Derek Yaniger. Acknowledging the South Pacific origins of the current
movement, curator and self-described urban archeologist Otto von Stroheim
nonetheless views this work as essentially a product of mid-century Americana.
While fans of Tiki Style might border on religious fanaticism in their love for
all things Tiki and their obsession for collecting Tiki mugs and menus, the
Tikis they worship are wholly American artistic creations, Stroheim explains. In
its heyday the decor, food and music used in Tiki bars was referred to as South
Seas, Polynesian, or Exotica and later simply as Tiki. Today, the umbrella term
Tiki is used to describe the entire gamut of Pan Polynesian arts that were
applied in those restaurants and bars from the late 1930s to
?the mid 1970s. This new breed of artists employs the Tiki motif in a
contemporary context. The revival of Tiki Style began with the emergence of the
post-punk cocktail culture in the mid-90s and now permeates pop culture from
coast to coast.

New Work by David Choe @ BLVD Gallery

Shango writes:

Hello Friends

One of the artists who inspires me most is coming to town for an opening.
He is a long time, grossly lawbreaking and brilliant American graf artist
who got busted in Japan, found God and now still busts out the most amazing
work...just legally now.

His is one of the most versatile creative minds I have ever seen work. He
can take any medium (spray paint, wood shavings, film, soy sauce, blood,
Styrofoam) and transform it into something beautiful.

And if you haven't been to BLVD gallery yet this is a good time to check out
the great stuff they are doing there.

BLVD Gallery presents
!COME ME!
a solo exhibition of new works by David Choe
September 15 - October 6 , 2006
Artist Reception Friday September 15 6pm - 10pm
BLVD Gallery 2316 2nd ave Seattle Wa 98121
http://www.blvdart.com

BLVD Gallery is proud to welcome Internationally acclaimed street
artist David Choe for his first solo exhibition in the Pacific
Northwest. David is one of
the most diverse and prolific artists working today. One of the
youngest artists to ever have a solo show at the MOCA. He has had his
art shown on every surface from canvases to human bodies, to third
world war torn walls, his art can be found in every facet of society,
from galleries ,museums, t-shirts, shoes, movies, billboards, cars,
murals, buildings, from New York city to the Congo, Africa to
everywhere in between. David's personality and work is often at odds
with the polite conventions of the art world, crossing the artificial
boundaries that seperate fine art from street art. He has designed and
created murals, movie sets, movie posters, album covers, shoes,
t-shirts, toys, calendars, commercials, cars, magazines, books,
illustrations for porn and children's story books, comics, and
animation approaching each project with the same level of genius and
the boundless energy that he has become known for. Over the course of
his career, David Choe has become as known for his personal exploits as
his artwork. David's approach to life, like his art, is one in which no
apologies are made. This lust for life has made David the subject of a
documentary, "Dirty Hands" ,that is currently in production and slated
for release in 2007. The demand for Davids work has become such that
after this year he has stated that he is going to take a break from
gallery shows and with a 2 year wait for commission pieces this may be
one of the last chances for the public to be able to acquire his work
for a long while.

PIRATES, PUPPETS AND ROCK @ CHAC

CAPITOL HILL ARTS CENTER
PRESENTS TWO NIGHTS OF PIRATES, PUPPETS AND ROCK

August 30, 2006 (Seattle, Wash.) — New York City’s Jollyship the Whiz-Bang brings two evenings of nautical puppetry and absurdist pop music to Capitol Hill Arts Center Sept. 14 and 15, joined by Vancouver, B.C., band Canned Hamm on the second night. This is Jollyship’s first West Coast tour.

ABOUT JOLLYSHIP THE WHIZ-BANG
Nominated for “Most Entertaining” at the 2005 Dublin Fringe Festival, Jollyship crafts delightfully insane pirate puppet rock operas with catchy nautical electro pop and mindblowingly cheap stage effects. Somewhere between a band and a theater group, Jollyship the Whiz-Bang is a Brooklyn-based, eight-person multimedia force of nature.

Jollyship the Whiz-Bang was conceived in 2002 by Nick Jones and Raja Azar. The group began with a ballad of rape and murder, “Pyrate Love.” A mission was forged to create a massive live musical pirate puppet sea saga, to be performed in sequential episodes developed and presented over the course of many years. Four years later, this has yielded six full-length multimedia productions (or “episodes”) linked sequentially and hours of bizarre musical material. Their shows are characterized by whimsical themes, an eclectic rock sound and unconvincing “period” dialogue between dubiously lovable seafaring puppets.

Jollyship the Whiz-Bang has garnered praise in Time Out New York , New York Press, The FADER, and VICE. They have performed in the U.S. , Canada , Ireland and Bangkok . In 2005, they released their first album, “Songs to Drown By” and recorded a DVD (forthcoming) adapting “Crabquistador,” the latest episode of their saga. In 2006, Nick Jones and Raja Azar did puppet work for the artist Laurie Simmons as part of her puppet film “Music of Regret,” which premiered at MOMA and starred Meryl Streep.

Don Volcano's Computer Corner

"Here are some links for your Fall Fashion Edition" said one of the emails I got from my girlfriend. Is it already fall again? What about global warming and El Nino? It has been doing great things to this area. I guess summer is over and it's time for the annual PV Fall Fashion Edition.

Let's start with colors. Black is having a comeback:

Alternative clothing for fashion freaks.

We like these two:

The classic pimp look remains timeless:

Are you bored with black and pimp look? Wanna try something new?
What about Ganguro from Japan? Wikipedia explains:

Ganguro is a fashion trend among many Japanese girls which peaked in popularity from the late 1990s to the early 2000s, an outgrowth of chapatsu hair dyeing. The Shibuya and Ikebukuro districts of Tokyo are the center of ganguro fashion.

The basic look consists of bleached hair, a deep tan, both black and white eyeliners, false eyelashes, platform shoes (usually sandals or boots), and brightly colored outfits. Also typical of the "Ganguro Gal" look are cell phones covered with purikura stickers, tie-dyed sarongs, mini-skirts, hibiscus flower hairpins, and lots of bracelets, rings and necklaces.

Extreme trend followers further bleach their hair up to a platinum blond shade, get even deeper tans, wear white lipstick, multicolored pastel eyeshadows and tiny metallic or glittery adhesives around the bottom rim of the eye sockets (See Yamanba). Popular Ganguro magazines include Egg, Popteen, and Ego System.

I am sure you want to see some of that:

And finally you need a new haircut too, don’t you?
Well, you get your haircut and we will rate it.

I don't know about you but I'll stick with the pimp look!
