Japanese Kustom Kulture Art @ Roq La Rue

A little bit too "crafty“ for my taste. But I’ll go – I haven’t been to Roq La Rue in a long time:

Roq La Rue Presents

“Burnout Network”
Japanese Kustom Kulture Art

curated by Nash Yoshii

Featuring work by:
Makoto
Mr. G
Rockin’ Jellybean
Sugisack
Widerange
Grimb

Opens Friday February 4th 6-10pm
With live music by Los Peligrosos

Pin striping demo with Makoto and Mr. G 7-9pm!

Roq la Rue re-opens for 2005 with a vibrant show featuring 6 Japanese artists who work

within the “Kustom Kulture” movement.

Kustom Kulture is a uniquely American art form that began in the 1950s studio of legendary hot rod hero Ed "Big Daddy" Roth. Working with artists including Robert Williams, Von Dutch and Rick Griffin, his iconoclastic custom cars and lowbrow sensibilities reverberate to this day - from the fine art world's recognition of Robert Williams' paintings to the popularity of Kustom television shows such as the Discovery Channel's "Monster Garage." The renegade outsider status accorded to people who run is such circles has caused it to develop its own subculture, with a distinctive iconography, lifestyle, vocabulary and fashion sensibility.

A small group of Japanese artists took note of this subculture and were instantly entranced. Rather than viewing it as a passing fad, these artists immersed themselves in the “Hot Rod” lifestyle - customizing cars, learning to pinstripe, traveling to car shows, and creating street art using the subculture’s outlaw symbolism such as skulls, cars, monsters, and tattoo images. A thriving subculture now exists in Japan devoted to the scene, which has incorporated elements of Japanese pop culture, while remaining loyal to the American hot rod tradition.

This show features the work of several of these Japanese artists, and ranges from Rockin’ Jellybean’s exquisitely rendered rock vixens, to Sugisack’s photo realistic paintings of street rods, to Mr. G’s meticulous pin striping, to Makoto’s exceptional blend of traditional Japanese iconography with old school Americana. This show is curated by Nash Yoshii of “Burnout” magazine and Detroit Junk in Tokyo.

Roq La Rue will be taking over the neighboring art studio for this opening, to feature live music by Los Peligrosos, and a pin striping demo by Makoto and Mr. G. Got something you want striped up? Bring it down with some dough and they’ll take care of it!

TOKYO STORY (FILM) @ NWFF

Sacred Cinema: A Yasujiro Ozu Retrospective

The Northwest Film Forum is thrilled to present a hugely-ambitious, 5-week retrospective of one of the great masters of world cinema, Yasujiro Ozu. Although his films are universally-acclaimed and often counted among the greatest ever made (Tokyo Story, Late Spring and I Was Born, But… being his most beloved works), he is still being discovered by Western audiences. His films never played, at all, in the West until just before his death, and never received a proper release in the United States until nearly a decade after his passing. Many of the films we’re showing have never played in Seattle, and only a small handful are available on video or dvd. And for those of you who are Ozu fanatics (like us), who want to introduce your friends to the master but are looking for as much accessibility as possible, we’re presenting ten very rare screenings of Ozu’s silent films (of which only a few still exist today) with live musical accompaniment from Seattle’s internationally-re! nowned composing community, covering just about every corner of the musical genre spectrum. We’ve got Wayne Horvitz and Robin Holcomb for the jazz-minded, John Atkins (of 764-HERO) and Carla Torgerson (of The Walkabouts) for the indie-rock crowd, the Aono Jikken Ensemble for more traditional Japanese music, as well as Elizabeth Falconer, one of the West Coast’s foremost Koto musicians, cellist Lori Goldston of the Black Cat Orchestra and more.

This huge retrospective will allow Seattle to truly discover Ozu and his masterful body of work. Even though Ozu has long been referred to by critics as “the most Japanese of directors”, we think that you’ll find that movies like TOKYO CHORUS and THERE WAS A FATHER have more to say about life in modern-day Seattle (or, really, anywhere in the world) than most of the films being made in the United States right now.

Check out the full schedule, along with descriptions and links to buy tickets and our Ozu 6-pack, which features five tickets for regular film screenings (of your choice) and one live score, at www.nwfilmforum.org/ozu.

Ozu: week 1
Feb 3 – 10 (scroll down for showtimes and descriptions)
Feb 3 – I Was Born, But… w/Lori Goldston & Elizabeth Falconer
Feb 5, 12 – I Was Born, But… w/subtitles read aloud by actors
Feb 4-9 – Tokyo Story
Feb 4-5 – There Was a Father
Feb 6-9 – Record of a Tenement Gentleman

EMERALD CITY COMIC CONVENTION

Eric writes:

Attention Fellow Northwesterners,

This weekend is the third annual EMERALD CITY COMIC CONVENTION, held
here in our own backyard of Seattle, at the stadium where people
typically watch big sweaty men pound the shit of each other (stupidly
named QWEST FIELD). This weekend will instead feature big sweaty men
avoiding eye contact with each other while sifting thru long white
boxes of yellowed comic books.

FANTAGRAPHICS will be hosting the tailgate party, exhibiting all
weekend and hosting signings on SATURDAY afternoon (from 3PM to at
least 4PM) with JIM WOODRING, PETER BAGGE and MARC BELL. Bagge will be
debuting his new book, BUDDY DOES SEATTLE, so come on down.

We will be there Sunday all day as well, so if you're looking to escape
Superbowl hoopla, can you think of any better way than loitering about
the city's largest football facility?

Best wishes,

Eric

Matt Calcavecchia @ Hugo House Gallery

Hugo House Gallery Presents Artist Matt Calcavecchia
"Challenging the Fourth Wall"

SEATTLE- In February, the Richard Hugo House Gallery will present "Challenging the Fourth Wall," a collection of paintings by Matt Calcavecchia. The opening reception will be held Saturday, February 5, 2005 from 5-7 p.m.; the exhibit runs through March 2, 2005. Admission is free and open to the public.

Why do artist statements always sound ridiculous?

"My current work focuses on the paradox between the concept of individuality and our desire to congregate and share our experience with others," says Calcavecchia. "The individual and the group are in constant conflict with each other, both ideologically as well as emotionally. As for my painting style, generalizing or removing detail from the composition of the figure and environment aids in communicating this idea.

It gets better:

"My ultimate goal is to have the viewer's thoughts and feelings be mirrored in the painting, so that the 'story' is created by the viewer. In theater, there is an imaginary wall that separates the audience from the action on stage. This is referred to as the fourth wall. It is my goal to deconstruct this fourth wall and encourage interaction between the painting and the viewer."

Unfortunately – or maybe fortunately - the link to the images was broken. But I still feel comfortable making a call and giving this one an enthusiastic “thumbs down”: This is not art, this is fart.

"Challenging the Fourth Wall" runs February 5, 2005 through March 2, 2005 at Hugo House, 1634 11th Ave. Admission is free; open hours are 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and noon -5 p.m. Saturday. An opening reception will be held Friday, February 5th from 5-7 p.m.

New Directions in Alcohol Consumption: Rat City Roller Girls

When I was reading this invitation I thought that it would fit into an old column called "New Directions in Alcohol Consumption" that used to be reserved for drinking events with people, who work at Amazon. Unfortunately I have no idea what this is about:

I hope this finds you well in the New Year and that you've been
sticking to your resolutions better than me. My New Year's resolution was
not to spread anymore RCRG gossip. My mouth has been sealed for 25
days, but I can't take it anymore. I'm about to explode!

O.K. here it is: but, first you gotta promise you won't tell anyone
I told you. Mums the word. Right?

I heard from an undisclosed source: The Rat City Rollergirls like to
drink from time to time! Omigod! I bet you're as floored and
flabbergasted as I am. They seemed like such a fine example of classy, proper
women. What is this world coming to?

I hope you're sittin down, because it gets even better: these girls
are sluttin it up pouring a devilish head as Guest Bartenders at the
Pacific Rim Brewery on Saturdays! I propose you go to this place of
debauchery and tell these Rat City Rollergirls what you really think about
them. Here's the scoop:

Brews & Bruises
Pacific Rim Brewery

Saturday (2/5): Kick Assteroid & Punky Bruiser (Throttle Rockets)

Front)
Clobberin' Mame (Sockit Wenches)

Rally the troops and if you SPEAK, KICK & BRUISE, your voice will be heard!

DJ Heather is part of Chicago's SuperJane collective of house mixtresses, and thus deserves your instant respect. For a reliable gauge of DJ Heather's command of the Chicago house vernacular, check out Dancefloor Principles (2003, Nordic Trax). Gliding 118-bpm funk flows through-out the disc like a life-giving river (Seattle's LawnChair Generals get some love, too, with their outstanding track "One Thing"). Heather keeps things relatively deep and tracky and thankfully isn't too reliant on diva dramatics. Her rep is solidified with a forthcoming mix disc coming out March 14 on the renowned Fabric label. It's safe to say countless grooves! will be gotten on tonight. Local house dons LawnChair Generals will ably set the (turn)table(s) for the headliner. -- DAVE SEGAL

Tandav @ ToST

I wondering what is going on in Seattle’s DJ La-la Land. DJ Anup writes:

Hi Ladies and gentlemen,

I regret to inform you that TANDAV is CANCELLED for this saturday at
ToST. There will be no more TANDAV nights at ToST till further notice.

Later
Anup.

But later I received an email from Deepayan, Gringo Starr, and James Whetzel:

We are also excited to announce that Tandav nights will be continuing on the first Saturday in March, but in April we will start doing two Tandav shows a month on the 1st and the 3rd Saturdays of the month!

We regret to inform you that DJ Anup will no longer performing at
Tandav nights at Tost.

I guess in the end it doesn’t really matter, who is allowed to claim the local brand name "Tandav". Although I have heard from two reliable sources that Tandav is actually pretty good and upgrade-worthy. But those were pre-Anup ratings and now I have to double check again before I go. Maybe it was good only because of Anup?

Deepayan on tabla, laptop, and dhol
DJ Gringo Starr on the turntables
James Whetzel on darbouka, sarod, and singing

With special guest Tom Armstong on brazilian percussion.

As usual the music will be eclectic and delicious. From the latest
Bhangra club tracks from the UK to the best Brazilian House, and
Arabic, music and all the sounds that bring the best times.

SUNRISE (Silent Movie) @ The Paramount,

Seattle Spin writes:

Film: Silent Movie Mondays at The Paramount, $12, every Monday during February. Just when it seems like watching black & white television is practically stone-age ancient, go back to before there was even sound with film. Restrictions can breed new forms of creativity, so go see how early filmmakers told spellbinding stories without the benefit of dialogue.

Here are more details about the film:

SUNRISE, 1927
February 7, 2005
Considered by many to be the finest silent film ever made by a Hollywood studio, F.W. Murnau's Sunrise represents the art of the wordless cinema at its zenith. Based on the Heinrich Sudermann novel, A Trip to Tilsit, this "Song of Two Humans" takes place in a colorful farming community where local farmer George O'Brien, happily married to Janet Gaynor, falls under the seductive spell of Margaret Livingston, a temptress from The City. See how love prevails.

Rainer Fassbinder’s Querelle @ Kozy Kino

Querelle is not my favorite Fassbinder movie. It's a little bit long. The light is incredible but story and acting were not exceptional. I like this new project and I am not going to downgrade a German movie for $1!

Thank you to all you folks who came down to the first night of Kozy Kino.
It was the good times and there seemed to be enough room for everyone
to enjoy some semblance of comfort. Apologies for the controversial homemade
anise liquor as well as the somewhat wooden introduction spiel. I will use my
cut of the take to invest in some public speaking lessons .

While the chance for cold weather is still possible (not that we welcome it),
the Kozy Kino has opted to heat things up with Rainier Fassbinder s Querelle
not in the Patrick Swayze sense of the idiom, heat things up, but in a much lustier,
murderous, homo-erotic, and (yes!) even more narcissistic way. Querelle is the tale
of a hunky sailor at port who uses his sexuality as a weapon to realize his own criminal
authenticity. Although the acting is stiff and the camerawork cold and objectively
voyeuristic, the overall production in this film makes one feel like one of those
roasted ducks, hanging in the window of a Chinese foodstand, glowing under
the warmth of a red heat lamp immersed in a stultifying heat. But in a lusty,
murderous, homo-erotic way!

Drink Special definitely something involving strong rum and mottled lime.
(subject to change due to availability).

see advert:
http://www.infernalnoise.org/kozykino/kino-flier.jpg

The Kozy Kino is a new underground cinema that infuses diverse film programming
with thematic beverage service. Every second and fourth Thursday evening,
we throw down the homemade cushions, fire up the video beamer and
concoct delicious refreshments to wash down the freshly popped corn.
Each featured film is a forgotten wonder of cinema coupled with shorts
and inspirational drink specials. It s a cheap night of uninstitutionalized
quality entertainment and a fine example of underground economy.

The Kozy Kino is located at 1809 Minor Ave. (between Stewart and Howell) right
around the corner from the Rebar. It is also somebody s loft space but don t
let that put you off. Although it s an intimate experience (read: seating is
limited), it s the sort of thing that this town ! needs more of (e.g. the speakeasy,
the peoples kitchen, the Sunday sermon, the peoples' underground surgical theater, etc.).
Help breathe some life into this 'theme park of a city' now and start your own!

questions? contact: inphaseprod@yahoo.com
and oh yeah, Kino means cinema in German... so please don't write me asking!

Thursday Feb. 10th, 9pm

IRON COMPOSER @ The Crocodile Cafe

Seattle, WA -Awwwwwwwww yeah, baby. The February IRON COMPOSER pits JENNY JIMENEZ - accomplished rock photographer, songwriter and bassist for badass quartet The Catch - against her producer, ERIK BLOOD - multi-instrumentalist for The Turn-Ons, and mega-producer for everyone from The Catch to Mountain Con to freakin' Ursula Android and Jackie Hell. Jenny's probably shot a photo of you at a rock show and you don't know it yet. Erik will probably produce your next CD, and you don't know it yet. These two multi-skilled Titans could fill a Space Shuttle with their combined talents, and remain one-step ahead of everyone. Tremble before them. Tremble hard.

Judging this month's competition is Carly Nicklaus lead vocalist and guitarist of...uh, The Catch. Huh. Also judging is Travis DeVries, lead vocalist and guitarist for...um, apparently, The Turn-Ons. Wow. This is kinda akward.

And rounding out the judges table is the woman every girl wants to be, and every boy wants listed on his dance card - Jennifer Maerz, music editor for The Stranger! As far as we know, she does not play in The Catch or The Turn-Ons, but we'll get back to you on that.

Opening Act to be revealed soon...

For IRON COMPOSER, one audience member, randomly chosen as the "secret ingredient," gushes about his or her current state of affairs (or nefarious past) in a five-minute interview. Each composer draws inspiration from the personal these life-details and incorporates those into an original song to be performed at the end of the bout.

Think it's that easy? This 45-minute competition is divided into five nine-minute segments. Each segment contains a "Mystery Chaos," performed by The Interloper (Korby Sears of Seattle School) which distracts the composers. As added molasses, each composer drinks a shot of liquor at the beginning of each round, consuming five shots in the course of 45 minutes. Each composer is equipped with "musical kitchens" contaning: one guitar, one piano, paper and pencil and one Sous Chef Line Musician. The Sous Chef conducts live rehearsals with the house band on stage, and composers can only communicate with the band via their Sous Chef. Now that's what we call confounding! Yahear?

Cold Lava

Seattle Spin is getting better every week. In this week's edition they posted their first downgrade that I would like to sjare with you:

Not worth standing in line for. The red rope lies - the establishment doesn't live up to hype created by the wait outside. You look at the line and ask yourself, "Is this place really that hot that it's worth standing in line for, or is everyone waiting outside a pack of mindless lemmings who don't think for themselves and haven't yet figured how out lame it actually is inside?" Here's when it's the latter case:

Cowgirls Inc. If you're a guy, this is actually the last place you want to go. Packed inside are 150 other guys just like you, ten women not into your gender, and a bunch of cute bartenders that you'll never have a shot at. Are we having fun yet?

Club Medusa. Think of Vegas, but with lower standards. Poor service, Christina Aguilera wanna-bes, surly bouncers, overpriced drinks and cover charge, inebriated college boys, a jam-packed dance floor, and music not worth waking up to. And this place is supposed to be cool! How long can a club live off it's 2002 popularity?

Frontier Room. A trendy little restaurant with high prices, inconsistent service, mediocre food, and a bar full of smoking Belltown swingers. It's a flip if the place is either swanky or swarmy. The food and the scene is better at other establishments, so what's the possible sane reason to stand in line here?

If you like this kind of style you should subscribe to their list by sending an email to

sender@seattlespin.net with "subscribe" in the subject.

Letters to the Editor

Flash Mob

Hey, Party Volcano.

Long time reader/subscriber, first time writer.
In this month's spin magazine, there was a short blurb about a flash mob
that did a one-time event whereby they made sure an unknown band had a
perfect gig, by arranging for a large number of people to come to a small
sunday night show and cheer the (previously unknown) band on. this idea
really stuck in my craw in a positive way, and i would like to see if i can
find some seattlites who'd be keen on such a concept. what a nice way to
send some positive energy to some struggling musicians. shows would be
chosen on a random basis, selected for a lottery based on the date, time and
expected attendance. Interested parties (fans, not bands) can email me at
jenny_bon@hotmail.com

many thanks!!!
Jenny.

Dear Jenny,
I am not the biggest fan of flash mobs and I was frankly glad that flash mobs kind of died after they had peaked in 2003. On 9/11/2003 we warned our readers about a flash mob event at the foot of the Space Needle:

Flash Mob at the Foot of Space Needle (Saturday, 9/13/2003)
The Stranger just wrote about them:

You've probably already heard of flash mobs--their eccentric gatherings have been well documented in media vehicles from the New York Times to Good Morning America, with mobs materializing as far afield as Hungary, South Korea, and Austin. Weird and seemingly purposeless, flash mobs converge and disperse to perform simple acts of mass absurdity in metropolitan centers. Forming fleeting secret societies, flash mobbers join the club for a few minutes before dissolving again into obscurity. Nobody, not even their leadership, knows who the members are.

It was brought to our attention that the next Flash Mob will take place at the foot of Space Needle: Link arms in an enormous circle, hop up and down chanting 'The Doctor is in!'

Sounds pretty stupid to me.

Maybe Spin is referring to a different kind of flash mob, that reminds me on a story I have heard about a girl, who found an interesting way to promote her boyfriend’s band. She placed an I-Saw-U in the Stranger, something like:

I saw you at bla, bla. You wore jeans and smiled at me when I dropped my purse. I thought you were cute but I was too shy to talk to you, bla, bla. Please meet me at the upcoming show of Visiting Day @ LowNoise on Saturday 2/5. Can’t wait to see you!

That apparently worked and Visiting Day (I borrowed this name from the Sopranos) played in front of a full house. This loyal girl probably didn’t know that she invented a new form of flash mob that I would label as "Involuntary Flash Mob".

If you are more into traditional (voluntary) flash mob events you should contact a group called seattleflashmob@yahoo.com . If you want to know more about flash mob events in general check out www.cheesebikini.com or www.flashmob.info. If you become addicted to flash mobbing you should seek help at FA (Flashmob Anonymous) – no, I am joking: there is no Flashmob Anonymous. But the other links should work.

Your
Don Volcano.
