Lori Earley @ Roq la Rue

Last week’s Stranger had Lori Earley’s “The Wish” on its cover (http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/CoverArt?oid=oid%3A21523). I think this will be one of the better shows at Roq la Rue.

Roq la Rue Gallery
Presents

Lori Earley

Opening Friday June 3rd 6-10pm
The artist will be in attendance
Show runs through July 2nd

Roq La Rue is very pleased to exhibit work by rising star Lori Earley. Lori’s seamless paintings of darkly beautiful and enigmatic women painted with a masterly hand and an unbelievable eye for lighting have burst onto the Pop Surrealism scene and quickly garnered her an impressive collector and fan base. This is her first solo show.

Lori Earley grew up down the street from an amusement park in Rye, New York. She began drawing at a very young age, and was always intrigued by the unusual- a fascination that would become a trait in her art later on.

In 1995, Lori received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of Visual Arts, where she had studied with influential artists like Marshall Arisman and Steven Assael. She received numerous awards and scholarships while in school and was one of the few students in her graduating class to receive the Rhodes Presidential Award for Outstanding Achievement.

Her oil paintings are a unique combination of classical realistic rendering with a personal element of distortion. Their distortion is derived from her innate desire to render the world she feels as opposed to the world she sees before her. Often, the eyes are the primary focus of _expression and every painting is a portrait of implicit emotion and mystery- though the message is never obvious. The figures she paints exist in their own esoteric realm and time, and each painting offers a glimpse into their anomalous world.

JOURNEY OF THE SHAMAN @ Sultan, WA

Naked Hippie Alert!

@ Lake Bronson Family Nudist Park (Sultan, WA) All Ages - 3-day/2-night festival
Navigate your way no matter what your path. Enjoy the beautiful setting by setting up camp near a spring-fed lake and waterfall, green trees, and blue sky - Gaia! Dance by day or night, participate in educational/artistic workshops, and support community artisans. Find commonalities with others through the language of dance and music. Grow as a community as we explore the inner/outer realms using as a tool the concept of shamanism. www.oraclegatherings.com

Blessings Tribe,
From exploring the depths of our roots at Mother Earth, all the way into the galactiverse at Space Traveler, we are now invited to go inward for the Journey of the Shaman.
This is a calling. A gathering of the tribe. An invitation to all of you to come participate and celebrate your Self and each other a! s crucial beings part of this visionary movement. This is an opportunity and reminder that every step we take sends rippling effects out into the collective. Every moment is an opportunity for love and transformation. And as conscious creators of this reality, may we find inner and tribal union.

May this weekend be filled with inspiration, transformation, healing, self-empowerment, communion, and evolution. And to the Sun and the Moon, please come and grace us with your beams of light...

love to all,
your brothers and sisters of the Oracle

DIRECTIONS: From the North, head south on I-5 and take Hwy 2 east towards Monroe/Stevens Pass. From the South, from I-5 merge onto I-405. Take the Hwy 522 exit to Monroe/Woodinville. Follow until you intersect with Hwy 2. Turn Left and go east on Hwy 2.

The directions will be the same for both North and South from here on:

Follow Hwy 2 through Sultan. Just past the main town of Sultan you will turn Left onto Sultan Basin Road. At this point take note of your odometer- Lake Bronson's gate is exactly 5.2 miles from Hwy 2 and the entrance is on the left side of Sultan Basin Road.

That must be a typo. Let me correct it "At this point take note of your odor meter - Lake Bronson's gate is exactly 5.2 miles from Hwy 2 ..."

GATE HOURS:
Friday June 3, 2pm-1am;
Saturday June 4, 10am-1am

VEHICLE PASSES:
$20 vehicle passes will be available at the event.
You can get a FREE VEHICLE PASS by arriving in a carpool of 3 or more, or by arriving in an alternatively fueled vehicle (biodiesel, hybrid, electric, bicycle, etc.).

THE PAST IS A FOREIGN COUNTRY @ Fremont Art Walk

Hi all,

It’s been a while since my last art mailer! Well, I have a new exhibit opening soon in lovely Fremont ; it will be a solo show (yup, just yours truly!) and I hope to see you there J Time & location details below…

Cheers,

Beatrice

THE PAST IS A FOREIGN COUNTRY: NEW ART EXHIBIT OPENS JUNE 3

EXHIBITION DATES: June 3 - 28, 2005

OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, June 3, 2005 (6 P.M. - 9 P.M., Free)

The Past is a Foreign Country is a solo exhibit of all-new mixed-media paintings by Béatrice Billard. The exhibition opens Friday, June 3 for the First Friday Fremont Art Walk and remains on view through Saturday, June 28 at Frame Up Studios (3915 Fremont Ave N., Seattle).

When Béatrice Billard rummages through childhood memories and listens to the songs that play in her head, the result is a series of sweetly macabre mixed! -media vignettes exploring the tragic demise of pet bunnies, cuddly monsters in the attic, evil wallpaper and closets that bite back.

Frame Up Studios (3915 Fremont Ave N., Seattle).

Lux, Specs One, Holy Sons @ CHAC Lower Level

If its not too late, could you please add this to your mailing? Its a great party going down this Friday! I'm giving you a lot of info here, please include as much as you can.

Static Factory Media and Autonomat Present : Joint!
This week: Lux, Specs One, Holy Sons

Lux
Lux cut his teeth Djing in 1992 at Seattle’s KCMU (pre-KEXP) at the University of Washington, which was then composed of a cadre of mad musical scientists who blended impossible mixes of artists like Public Enemy, John Cage, Napalm Death & Albert Ayler into a cohesive _expression of their innermost souls. Taking this passion for musical _expression to the dance floor, he soon became a well-loved member of Seattle’s underground rave/house/loft-party scene, and has remained committed to its underground for over 10 years. Known for a wide range of styles and a discriminating ear, his residenci! es have included the Chocolate Factory, Black Citroen, Blue @ Alibi Room, Dialect @ OK Hotel, Bump @ Baltic Room, and Groovetech radio, as well as the occasional guest slot on KEXP’s Expansions electronic music show. Recently torquing Lux’s platters have been the sounds of Grime, Diplo, and “Quick-Pickin’ ‘N Fun-Strummin’ Home Guitar Course” on Alfred Music. It’s FUN! It’s EASY! It really works!

Specs One
Who better to talk about the differences in rap from 88 to now than a 15+ year vet. of rap, he told me "The major difference would be, Hip Hop now is predominantly gangster rap. In 88 you had Ultramagnetic, Public Enemy, Jungle Bros, De La Soul, Stetsasonic, Mantronix, Special Ed, Tuff Crew, Audio Two, Geto Boys, The list don't stop. Now I turn on MTV and see rappers throwing money and attacking the camera. It's just become some whole other shit. There are still some groups coming with progressive stuff but you have to! seek it out. Nothings really changed as far as the culture, but the industry has warped what they found to be marketable into an abomination of what it used to be. That's what corporations do though so it comes as no surprise." Specs has been making music in the Northwest so long, I wanted to know some groups he respected from different generations of Northwest Hip Hop, "In the 80s, it was Westside Threat, Deputy Rhyme, even Sir Mix-a-Lot Ray. (Sir Mix-A-Lots name before dropping the Ray). In the 90s, PD2, Brothers of the Same Mind, Blind Council, and Shabazz Coalition. Today I'm feeling Blak of Silent Lambs Project, Verse Omega, and Vitamin D." --superhappywax.com

Holy Sons
For a man with over a thousand songs recorded on 4-track, Emil Amos isn't too ambitious to get anywhere. From out of the nether-regions of his basement (or boudoir, whatever's more comfy), the project known as Holy Sons is now closer than ever to seeing the dimmed Schlitz sign of our current watering hole. Not that he's trying too hard. While leaders of the knit-hat set like Will Oldham and Songs: Ohia have been able to consistently market and package their melancholy and paralysis, Emil seems to have let it get to him. With the release of his fourth album, however, Holy Sons may have a slightly less austere future ahead. .

Happy Hour DJ Superjew with videos by Sam Easterson.

Marianne "DJ SuperJew" Goldin likes to think she's some sort of glitterati. She has been an effervescent party DJ since 2001, lavishing audiences in esoteric French pop and raucous booty bass alike while ensconced in wholly impractical heels. In her more cerebral pursuits she is an illustrator, organizer, promoter, and lover of silk screening. She will be teaching art & design workshops this summer at the DIY Academy (Richard Hugo House www.hugohouse.org/diy).

Sam Easterson
In order to increase the public's awareness of animals and plants in their native habitats as well as glean a new perspective on these creature's daily lives, Minneapolis-based artist Sam Easterson straps tiny helmet-mounted video cameras onto everything from buffaloes to tarantulas.

A video artist for ten years, Easterson's initial drive for seeking out different perspectives had him setting up equipment inside clothes dryers and popcorn poppers. Then, in 1998 he conceived of A Sheep in Wolf's Clothing, an installation at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis in which he attached a camera to a sheep's head to document a flock as they grazed in a park.

"I was shocked to realize all the other animals in the flock could tell that this one sheep with the camera had been 'altered' in some way. She kept trying to enter, and t! hey kept treating her as an outcast. I also learned sheep can run very fast and fences are not as sturdy as you think." They ended their run in a WalMart Parking lot.

Easterson isn't doing this as a prank; he has a sincere passion for understanding how animals traverse the landscape. Sam is currently in New Zealand with plans to hop over to Australia and work with the kangaroos. He very graciously provided 7 short clips for display during this event.

Following Happy Hour will be the Sprung Fashion Show featuring:

Fly Hair - Hair Salon
Masha Osoianu - Fashion Designer - highend street wear with a touch of haute couture;
Russell Songco - Casual Office shirts w/unique details;
Nuvo Moda/ Moda Xpress - All the best and latest in fashion trends;

Lil' Paisley - one of a kind jewelry;
Leanne Barton - makeup and skincare
Models! provided by Heffner Managment.

About Art Patch:

Art Patch was initially created through a collaborative effort between Public Health Seattle King County tobacco prevention program and Cornish College of the Arts to counter corporate tobacco's use of our local artists and arts institutions as a vehicle for marketing their addictive and deadly product. Since then the importance of being 'pro art' to the community's health in totality has become increasingly apparent to artists, civic, and community leaders.

Last week I was challenging you with another Fake or Not contest with this link:

forget-me-not panties
http://forgetmenotpanties.contagiousmedia.org/index.html

Jeanine got it right:

Hey there Mr. Volcano -

The panties bit is part of a contest-slash-viral-marketing-test called Contagious Media Showdown.
http://showdown.contagiousmedia.org/

The premise is to encourage creativity and identify the next dancing baby national obsession. The not-so-secret other purpose is for the marketing types to learn about electronic word of mouth and how to take advantage of this new way to reach their potential customers. (Story on NPR a week or so ago).

You can keep track of the top hits at the contagious media website link if you're so inclined.

Cheers!
jca

Yep, this was a Fake. But I think it was too easy. First off, dot-orgs usually don't sell anything. Only dot-coms do. Then if you find the root page of forget-me-not panties then you'll end up at http://www.contagiousmedia.org, the home of Contagious Media Experiments:

Global capitalism has produced hundreds of millions of bored office workers who sit in front of computers forwarding emails and surfing the web, inadvertently creating the Bored at Work Network (BWN). The BWN has become the largest alternative to the corporate media. Activists, artists, and hackers can reach millions of people through the BWN.

Solo and in collaborative groups, I create content for the BWN, including email forwards, net art, joke web sites, phone lines, and weblogs. These viral projects are examples of what I call "Contagious Media" and this site documents four examples that have reached millions of people: the Nike email, the Rejection Line, Black People Love Us, and Fundrace.org.

On the right side you'll find three other famous and brilliant fakes that I would like to share with you:
