SUSAN ROBB @ Platform Gallery

SATURDAY, SEPT. 17, 1 PM

SUSAN ROBB, Artist Talk in the Gallery

Please join us at Platform on Saturday to hear Susan talk about her latest exhibition. Her discussion will be followed by a reception. It's not to be missed!
And don't forget to download a ringtone for your phone and a sound piece for your MP3: www.susanrobb.com
Where her Airlifted to Safety series addressed the desire for protection and the manufacturing of security, Susan Robb’s most recent work looks at the loss of security and the fall into dystopia where one is isolated from nature open to being battered and bruised by culture. This new series of work includes video in which nature is viewed as an isolated event; sampled sound pieces made from recordings of the 2004 Whitney Biennial, which abstract the very thing that should clarify (also available as downloadable ringtones from Robb’s website www.susanrobb.com); and an installation ominously called The Wall. Also included are large-scale photographs generated from The Wall that are lush landscapes even while they throb and pulsate like bruised skin. It’s not all as bleak as it could be, however; Robb’s wry humor points the viewer towards a means of escape and personal autonomy.

Susan Robb is a recipient of a Pollack-Krasner Award as well as a City of Seattle CityArts Projects Grant. Her work has been included in Gene(sis): Contemporary Art Explores Human Genomics, a exhibition that travelled nationally and was organized by the Henry Art Gallery, as well as in exhibitions in Berlin, Tokyo, and Sweden and the Pacific Northwest. She was the recipient of The Stranger’s 2003 Genius Award in the visual artist category.

OUCH MY EYE @ Bemis Building

Hey there Party Volcano,

Saturday night is the Annual Bemis Building show once called by Karla
Esquivel "perhaps the best art secret in Seattle," Even though
attendance has been steadily growing to notorious art events at Ouch My
Eye Gallery, this is the show that Bemis has built its name on.
Resident art studios are open. Residents curate shows of reasonably
priced work by friends and ex-girlfriends. People run into people they
haven't seen in ages. And the cheap libations flow and flow. This time
around the show is being orchestrated by the smooth politico, abstract
painter Don Rissler with the cooperation of Mike Chandler and Bob
Brunner of Ouch My Eye.

Gaia Consort concert in Redmond.

Every week John Schlick sends out his recommendations for parties and shows:

Hi everyone:

This weekend has some VERY cool shows. and, as usual, I have multiple
conflicting engagements.

Lets start with Saturday.

DEAD Can Dance at the Paramount. I'm doing some of the load out from
thier rehersal at the Moore Friday to get them to the Paramount on
Saturday. This is the FIRST date on thier US tour, so you can be SUre that
they are psyched to be here and playing. They have been in town for a
week now rehersing.

Out of Town on Saturday: Jason Demain and the Strain Hawthorne theatre
in Portland, show at 8:00PM. The strain features one of the former
members of Everclear, and they are a lot of fun. If you are headed south
this weekend they are a good bet for some raucous rock-n-roll fun.

And my pick for in town shows? Gaia Consort concert with Carolyn
Currie from Maine (www.carolyncurrie.com)
Gaia Consort is a mostly acoustic vocal driven pop band that usually
plays private shows. In this case, it's at a large private house in
Redmond that has it's own stage surrounded by trees out in the back yard.
It's NOT a club, it's a wonderful experience. and if there weren't
already 2 other events that I'm scheduled at, I'd be there.
See www.pinecoon.com/concert.htm for directions to the show. Show
starts at 8:00pm

Sunday, the show thats very worthwhile is Agnes Ingarra
(www.agnesingarra.com) at the Mirabeu room. She is an amazing vocalist that sings
uplifting upbeat material. This show is one that I might actually make
it to.

As usual, if you know anyone else that wants to hear about local shows,
have them send me an email. I'll be happy to add them.
And, if you no longer want to receive these updates, drop me a line,
and I'll be happy to drop you.

John.

Romp Naked

A downgrade from Seattle Spin:

Party: Romp Naked, Sept 17th, $15 - $30. For men only, celebrate male form and energy through nude dance and music. Whatever this is, it certainly isn't an orgy. Rather, this is a gathering of men honoring the male spirit through shared experience. Besides, can you really imagine the visual on this: naked guys with hairy backs and pot bellies dancing around, with their weenies flopping about?

Sunday, September 18, 3 pm

Clarinettissimo!

Sean Osborn, with special guests Eric Mandat and Denise Lum

Repertory: Bernstein Sonata, Copland Concerto, Eric Mandat’s One-liners, Sean Osborn’s Quartet #1 for 4 B-flat clarinets, Peter Schickele’s Monochrome III for 9 B-flat clarinets.

Peter Schickele is very funny. His Bach interpretations are hilarious. "Monochrome III for 9 B-flat clarinets" sounds like another crazy piece.

PONCHO Concert Hall, 710 East Roy Street, Seattle
Free and open to the public.

Don Volcano's Computer Corner

Everybody laughs when I mention that I live in the slums. Now I realize that I have been wrong: I don't live in the slums. My current theory is that people, who live in the slums, don't break into their neighbor's house. If I lived in the slums and had such plans I would go to a better neighborhood. In short: nobody breaks into slum houses.

This week I learned that there have been 11 break-ins in the last 3 months in the street where I live. My house is one of the few houses that they haven't visited yet. I knew my goat heads on those poles in front of my house would be good for something one day!

So I actually live in a better neighborhood now and I have decided to celebrate my new status with getting a dog that will also hopefully take care of the burglar problem around my house. (I am afraid those goat heads won't keep the burglars away for too long.)

When I announced my plans my friend Miguel replied:

A dog, eh? Check out this site to determine what type of dog you are:

What dog are you?
http://www.gone2thedogs.com

This site is tremendously helpful and has assisted me greatly in my
quest for self-realization. For instance, it provided this valuable
insight: I'm a Caanan dog and I really, really like sheep. I was
considering dating a goat. No more.

I better move those goat heads to the backyard before next time he comes over.
