Events for 5/12 to 5/18/2006

I guess the Space Virgins forgot to send me a note for Kinko De Mayo at the Rebar on last Friday. They promised a kinky photo contest and spanking station. Oh well, maybe next time.

Next time might be just around the corner. The famous Wigg 'n Skirt party is happening this Sat but it has become so big that the hosts decided to turn it into an invite only event. Dan writes: "There will be a list at the door, but unless it's packed, peeps with wigs n skirts should be able to get in".

Unfortunately I am not allowed to publish any details. But the clues (Wigg 'n Skirt, Space Virgins, Dan) I have dropped might get some of you in.

What else is going on this week? I don't have many events but the few I got I like. My favorites: A gallery opening right next to Roq La Rue and Poetry on Monday.

Grand opening of BLVD Gallery

BLVD Gallery
presents
“Groundswell”
opening Friday May 12th 6-10pm

BLVD Gallery is proud to present for its inaugural show, “Groundswell”, a diverse collection of some the most exciting artists of the Urban Contemporary movement. These artists have literally made their mark across the globe helping to create what has become the predominant visual art form of modern urban culture using the visual vernacular of graffiti, pop culture, and fine art with the viral strategies of mass marketing. This show is meant to serve as an introduction to the incredible depth of the Urban Contemporary art community and the ongoing aesthetic that BLVD Gallery wishes to promote.

Participating in this show are pioneers of the “Street Art” world, as well as individuals who recontextualize the visual language of the city to create a new visual _expression that is spiritually rooted in folk art but is undeniably “Fine” art. Though the art may appear incredibly varied there is a thread of modernism that connects all of the work together and gives it an accessibility that is often missing from more conceptual endeavors.

Participating artists are:

Invader
Mearone
Joshua Petker
Greg Simkins, “Craola”
Thomas Han
Damon Soule
Oliver Vernon
Joshua Krause
Robert Hardgrave
Iosefatu Sua
Sam Sneke
Sylvia Ji
Bigfoot
Martin Ontiveros

Pen and Ink Show

This is to remind you that we're having a pen and ink show Saturday at the Cafe Racer. All pen and ink, in classic and irreverent styles. We're the "Friends of the Nib."

Please come see the new work by cartoonists Jim Woodring, David Lasky, Roberta Gregory, Tom Dougherty, Dalton Webb, Mark Campos, Jen Ralston, Scott Faulkner, and Matt Rodriguez, and myself. Underground comix legend Justin Green will also contribute but will not be attending.

FRIENDS OF THE NIB PRESENT PEN AND INK AT CAFE RACER MAY 13

Anyone who has tried to make a drawing with a steel pen dipped in ink knows how difficult it can be. The penpoint (also called a nib) tends to stick in the paper and spatter, or drop its load of ink in an unwanted blob; or it may refuse to release any ink at all. Small wonder then that for the past fifty years artists who want to work in ink have been abandoning this difficult tool in favor of fine-tipped marking pens and other modern implements.

Does this matter? Yes, say The Friends of the Nib, a loose coalition of Seattle cartoonists who are doing their part to preserve the pen-and-ink tradition; it matters because the art of drawing matters, and pen-and-ink is a uniquely expressive medium. The Friends will display their own pen drawings at Cafe Racer in Ravenna from May through June.

The steel dip pen is a versatile drawing tool capable of producing an astonishing range of effects. The same flexible nib can be used to make delicate hairlines as well as expressive, fluid, thick-and-thin strokes. Most of the iconic line drawings of the 20th century, from Thomas Nast's dense, etching-like drawings of the Tammany Tiger to Charles Shultz's PEANUTS comics, were drawn with steel pens.

Local cartoonists participating include Bob Rini, David Lasky, Roberta Gregory, Tom Dougherty, Jim Woodring, Dalton Webb, Mark Campos, Jen Ralston, Scott Faulkner and Matt Rodriguez. Underground comix legend Justin Green will also contribute but will not be attending.

The opening party is on Saturday, May 13, 7:00-9:00 at Cafe Racer. A learned discourse on pen technique will be delivered by Walter Foxglove ("The Smartest Artist") at 7:30, and pen and ink supplies will be on hand for those who want to try them.

WHAT: Exhibition of pen and ink drawings by Seattle cartoonists
WHO: Presented by Friends of the Nib and Cafe Racer
WHERE: Cafe Racer, 5828 Roosevelt Way NE Seattle, Washington (206) 523-5282, two doors south of The Trading Musician
WHEN: Opening party Saturday May 13, 7:00-9:00. Show runs through June 15

Kozy Kino: Abel Raises Cain

Probably the last Kozy Kino (or public gathering) at the venerable Romain Electric building.

Romain Electric is fixing to get the hard polished boot in that ass and out the door… any day now. But sheriffs
and landlords aren’t going to stand in our way of hootin’ it up there until the very bitter end. Are they? Fuck no!

Appropriately, this last featured film at the Romain Building will be Abel raises Cain, a documentary by Jenny
Abel about her father, Alan Abel, the ‘world’s greatest hoaxer’. The story traces the beginning of his prankster
career to the tightly clenched conventional environment of 1950’s Cold War American when he began a national
campaign to clothe all ‘nude’ animals. Throughout his trajectory, the push for the absurd and outrageous is constant;
Euthanasia Cruises, KKK Symphony Orchestra, School for Panhandling. His beguiling efforts are well documented
and Jenny’s narrative approach serves as an exploration of what a strange and confusing childhood she must have
had.

Scott Beiben presented this when he came through last with the Lost Film Fest but the turnout was not tremendous,
so this is your chance to see it again, hopefully with a large crowd… which is the best way to see such a film.

Kozy Kino – Abel Raises Cain
FRIDAY May 12th, 9pm
@ The Perfect Room
1101 Airport Way S - Romain Electric Bldg. Dial #888 (go one flight up)
Entrance – $1 - one U.S. dollar.
