Freaky Chakra (Astralwerks)
"An excellent addition to the West Coast's psychedelic groove movement alongside Tranquility Bass, Single Cell Orchestra and Spacetime Continuum, Daum Bentley's Freaky Chakra project combined funk, earthy techno and elements of classic industrial music for his debut LP, 1995's Lowdown Motivator. A fan of hip-hop and industrial until the nascent rave scene hit San Francisco in the late '80s, Bentley began recording in the early '90s and appeared live in early incarnations of Miguel Fierro's Single Cell Orchestra. Introduced to Tranquility Bass' Mike Kandel through Fierro, Bentley passed him a demo tape and released the debut Freaky Chakra single "Halucifuge" on Kandel's Exist Dance Records. One year later Bentley was signed to the surging independent Astralwerks, which released his first album Lowdown Motivator in 1995. Comprising a range of material recorded as early as 1990, the LP earned glowing praise from critics, as did the stormy battle-clash Freaky Chakra Vs. Single Cell Orchestra. Bentley resurfaced in 1997 with the EP Year 2000, and his second proper full-length Blacklight Fantasy was released one year later." ~ John Bush, All Music Guide.

Tekgnosis (Numeriklab)
Tekgnosis is one part Bird on the live electronic drums and another part local Laptop Battle winner m.O. live on the 'puter. SF party kids per history, they moved to Seattle a few years back to chill and focus more energy towards music. Past residencies at the See Monster Lounge and many local gigs have quickly caught the attention of those fans of both live techno, acid and house. Their energy is contagious and your hips will shake uncontrollably. http://www.numeriklab.com/

Justin Byrnes (Shameless)
Shameless resident DJ Justin Byrnes wasted no time getting his own productions out live. In the past year he's worked the dancefloors as a live performer at numerous afterparties and events such as the 2005 Decibel Festival, Seattle's Laptop Battle, and Shameless events. With much of his music in the electro/tech-house vein, he'll be joined by robotic MC Anton Bomb performing vocally. http://www.lab-77.com

I don't usually get too carried away when it comes to this stuff, but recently some of her predictions have come to life and it's kinda freaking me out. Perhaps it's all just some strange coincidence. Check her out at http://www.spookee.org

sound combustion @ LoFi

I really like what Grey (Filastine) and the INB are doing. I am highly recommending this event:

A night of sound combustion: Fri Feb 3, LoFi

Filastine
With laptop, percussion, and other junk creates a hybrid smashup of
hiphop, breakcore, grime, with heaps of arabic and brazilian
elements. Full CD dropping in March, vinyl to follow. Filastine
leaves for other continents and this is his final Team America
performance 'til July.
http://www.filastine.com/

the Infernal Noise Brigade
Should need no explanation. It's the 20-piece rogue marching band you
may have seen in the streets tearing shit up, or crashing warehouse
parties. This is a rare advertised club show.
http://www.infernalnoise.org/

dj Karo
Comes all way from New Orleans for this show. He spins dirty south
electro funk rap from the floodplain. Come hear the vinyl he
painstakingly salvaged from his sodden warehouse.

Skiathon for Oliver Wolff

David K. is

Hi All,

On February 6th, I will be embarking on a "Skiathon" to raise money for a baby boy in San Diego. His name is Oliver Wolff & he was born deaf. He's a terrific little guy with a huge smile. His parents have found out about a fairly new type of implant that can actually give deaf people the ability to hear. It's quite expensive & their insurance company won't cover the surgery until he's past the age that the doctors recommend having it. Please click on the link below to get a full introduction to Oliver & the Cochlear Implants:

http://members.cox.net/tsrw/oliverimplants.htm

I will be trying to raise as much money as possible by doing this "Skiathon". It works just like a walkathon, onl! y I'll be skiing. I am looking to get pledges for every run I make. I am writing you to sponsor me to raise funds, if you are willing to do so. You would be sponsoring me based upon the total number of runs that I ski in one day. I expect to complete 40-50 runs, but I'm doing this on a weekday to avoid long lift lines & may be able to complete more runs. Each run will have approximately a 1,000 foot vertical drop, which means I plan to ski over 40,000 vertical feet in one day. I will have a score keeper to record my total number of runs, & I will certify to those who pledge, that number. You would pay your pledge amount multiplied by the total number of runs. Therefore, if you pledge at $1.00 per run & I complete 50 runs, you will pay $50. You can pledge at any amount. $0.10 - $10. Anything will help. Pledge donations should be made out to "The Oliver Wolff Fund" & can be mailed to the address on the web page or sent to me & I will forward all donati! ons to Oliver's Credit Union.

Oliver's parents, Tad & Shannon Wolff, are not wealthy people. They are selling off everything they can & taking a 2nd mortgage on their house to raise as much as possible. I am making a contribution, but wanted to find a way to give more than I have, so I came up with the "Skiathon" idea. I don't ask for favors or help often, but I feel that this is a great cause. I had a baby boy 6 months before Oliver was born & I know how much he enjoys music & being read to. I can't imagine anything different for Oliver.

If anyone wants to join me in the "skiathon", forward this to friends & family & start gathering pledges, wax your skis or snowboard & take Feb 6th off work. I'd love the company & support.

Thank you in advance to those who pledge to help me accomplish this very important & worth! y goal of helping Oliver lead a normal life.

Warmest regards,

David Kelly

Independent Exposure @ Central Cinema

The 8 February Independent Exposure screening series presents a unique
program called, Mobile Exposure - works that address mobile culture or use
mobile/handheld device. Arriving in Seattle during a time of national
controversy regarding surveillance, this program presents an artistic
exploration of the meaning and methods of an extremely personal form of
cinema.

In days gone by, it was only the occasional lone artist who insisted on
always carrying a camera or sketch pad in his/her pocket. Now at
unprecedented levels, millions of people obsessively carry mobile phones
that also double as handheld cinematic tools capable of documenting
experiences, expressions and experimentation on a daily basis. In a society
surrounded by surveillance systems, mobile camera-phones further a culture
of universal intimacy while also contributing to the ever-declining private
space in our society.

As has been said before, technological developments have far outstripped our
society's ethical, artistic and functional comprehension of the uses of
these technologies. This program represents an attempt to close some ground
on this gap by raising questions such as:

. With phone cameras sophisticated enough to make credit card imaging
a problem, does the intimacy and mobility of the video-enabled cell phone
challenge or contribute to our society of surveillance?

. Does the intimacy and mobility of the video-enabled cell phone
provide new tools for a media culture where the growing genre is documentary
and "reality television"?

. Does its low-resolution somehow challenge the aesthetics of
sophisticated digital video which is on the verge of consigning film to the
archives of history?

To find out more, join us on Wednesday, 8 February at Seattle's Central
Cinema for a 50-minute program comprised of 19 short movies from around the
world.

The Central Cinema is Seattle's only movie-dinner-theater, offering beer &
wine plus a full menu available at all shows with waiter service in the
theater. Independent Exposure returns to Seattle courtesy of Microcinema
International, Central Cinema and Emerald Reels. The series will continue on
the 2nd Wednesday of each month with a new program each month.

"69 Love Songs" Pre-Valentine's Day Bash @ Crocodile

The Three Imaginary Girls (TIG) write:

Hi Party Volcano,

We're just popping in to remind you that the "69 Love Songs" Pre-Valentine's Day Bash is fast upon us -- specifically, it's in one week, on Thursday night, February 9th, at the Crocodile. We have attached the press release for the event, and also wanted to make you aware of a few more exciting tidbits about the night:

1) In addition to the stellar original lineup, we have added the illustrious Transmissionary Six and the amazing Saeta (featuring Lesli Wood of Ms. Led as well as Jen Wood -- no relation, as far as we know) to the event. What luck!

2) We're hosting a "How 69 Love Songs Changed My Life" essay content! Through Feb 7th, you can send us your tale of how 69 Love Songs changed your life. Or tell us your greatest love story in 69 words or less. The best essay gets free tickets to the show, and we will be reading the essays between acts at the show. Big fun! {http://www.threeimaginarygirls.com/69giveaway.asp}

3) We're gonna be filmed! A NYC-based documentary is sending a Seattle representative to cover the event for their documentary, "Absolutely Cuckoo: The World of the Magnetic Fields." They are looking to interview a few superfans from the crowd, so let us know if you're interested and we'll try to hook you up {ahem, Larry Rose!}

4) We have prizes! We're going to be raffling off prizes from our awesome sponsors: Barsuk Records, Magic Marker Records, and KEXP, as well as a very special imaginary gift pack.

5) What more do you need to hear? You are soooo gonna be there, right? Just in case you're not entirely convinced, take a look at the list of bands who will be represented: The Long Winters, Vendetta Red, Rocky Votolato, Visqueen, Tullycraft, Sean Nelson and His Mortal Enemies, Kane Hodder, Daylight Basement, Saeta, Transmissionary Six, Sameer Shukla, The Dutch Elms, Slender Means, Math and Physics Club, and Kurt B. Reighley.

You know you wanna be there. Now tell the world.

we're crazy for you, but not that crazy,
dana, liz, char
*three imaginary girls*

Free tickets? How 69 Love Songs Changed My Life essay?
Count me in! I have sent in the one love song that changed my life:

When I dragged you from the river
you were still a little bit pale and swollen with water.
Fern clasped around your hands.
Seaweed and a yellowed shirt.
In spite of that you seemed beautiful just a couple of days ago,
filled with life from your head to your toes.

What were the questions that escorted you into the water?
What broke into peaces? Or what was too beautiful
to bear any longer?
And it was certainly no accident
that water drops on your forehead
cut me like shards.

Perhaps it would not have been a pleasant sight for guests.
You in my room, pale, lying in a bier while decomposing.
You stayed with me, with those rings around your sallow eyes,
you were my quiet eerie pet.
And we danced the dance of death.

And your body was falling into pieces
like waves gnawing at it.
Once green fishes mockingly
swam out of your stomach.

We lived in that defiant humid room for several weeks.
Then I drowned in you
and my body reaches for the stench
of your decay like a feisty dancing faun,
because I know now:

You went into the water only for me.

This is not from me. Konstantin Wecker wrote this remarkable song in 1973. It is still one of the most moving love songs I know. Loyal readers with good memory will remember it. I threw it in for Memorial Day 2004.

Ah, those were the days...

Here are more details about 69 Love Songs:

THREE IMAGINARY GIRLS, 90.3 KEXP, AND BARSUK RECORDS TO PRESENT "69 LOVE SONGS" PRE-VALENTINE'S DAY BASH AT THE CROCODILE CAFÉ

Seattle, WA, January 17, 2005 —"We're Absolutely Cuckoo" for the Magnetic Fields. That's why Three Imaginary Girls has decided to celebrate Valentine's Day this year with a "69 Love Songs" Pre-Valentine's Day Bash, co-sponsored by the mighty 90.3 KEXP and the amazing Barsuk Records.

The event will take place at the Crocodile Café on Thursday night, February 9th, and will feature collaborations from tons of Northwest musicians performing their favorite tracks from the 1999 Magnetic Field's 3-disc opus, "69 Love Songs."

The long list of performers includes members of The Long Winters, Vendetta Red, Rocky Votolato, Visqueen, Tullycraft, Harvey Danger, Kane Hodder, and many more. In honor of Valentine's Day, the night will feature three great performance of love – of both the romantic and fraternal nature:

1) Lovebirds Eric Corson (The Long Winters) and Anna Lange (Dutch Elms) will debut their lo-fi side project, Fork and Spoon.
2) Newlyweds Andrew Moore (Kane Hodder) and Alissabeth Newton (ex-The Catch) will perform as their aptly named band, For Better Or For Awesome.
3) Rock and roll brothers Rocky Votolato (formerly of Waxwing) and Sonny Votolato (Slender Means) will dazzle the crowd with their amazingly talented genes.

The full roster of performers, with monikers, includes:

* Barsuk Record's Rocky Votolato and Sonny Vototalo {Slender Means}
* Fork and Spoon, featuring Eric Corson {of Barsuk Record's The Long Winters} and Anna Lange {The Dutch Elms}
* Rachel Flotard {Visqueen}
* Zach Davidson {Sony Records' Vendetta Red) and Sameer Shukla
* Magic Marker Records' Tullycraft
* Math and Physics Club
* Breno Dakota {featuring members of Daylight Basement}
* For Better Or For Awesome featuring Andrew Moore {Kane Hodder} and Alissabeth Newton {ex-The Catch}
* Sean Nelson and His Mortal Enemies {Harvey Danger}
* Piglét, France's greatest porcine illusionist (aka writer Kurt B. Reighley)

The outrageous Adrian Lefleur of Iron Composer fame (coming soon to the Game Show Network) will emcee the event and will raffle off a variety of fabulous indie-rock themed prize packs throughout the night.

"Since Stephin Merritt rarely tours, we figured the next best thing would be to have a bunch of our favorite bands cover the songs. I am giddy with anticipation," said Liz Riley, co-founder of Three Imaginary Girls.

Three Imaginary Girls will also run a "Tell Us Your 69 Love Songs Love Story" themed-contest. Readers can submit their stories of how "69 Love Songs" impacted their love lives, and the best submission will receive a pair of free tickets to the show. The imaginary girls will read the best stories between sets throughout the night.

"The crazy thing about '69 Love Songs' is that no matter where you are romantically, it's fitting," Dana Bos, also a co-founder. "You can rejoice, court, break-up, kiss, wed, laugh, fight, or drink with that album."

"I can't wait to hear who sings 'Underwear,'" said imaginary girl Char. "I hope he changes the lyrics to 'A pretty imaginary girl, in her underwear.'"

If there's anything better in this world -- who cares?

What shall we do this weekend? Maybe dress up like a seal and visit the polar bears? Wouldn't that be fun?

Never wear a seal hat to the zoo...

Okay, that was probably not a good idea. But what about dressing up like a seal and going to a Burning Man party? Better, I guess.
