Events for 6/16 to 6/22/2006

This week I have only a few events for you. But they are not bad: a Space Virgin Fundraiser, wrestling girls, and Maya Deren.
I don't care too much for the Fremont Parade - too many umkempt men in utilikilts.

Pin Down Girls @ Showbox

Maura writes:

Back from the off season of wrestling bears in the Ukraine, Sasha and Natasha Vixen, of the New Male Order Vixens, once again rule the ring with an iron fist in a velvet glove. Under the new religious management of the Mormons, our

manger is on a Mission going door-to-door to find us new husbands (and greencards). We return to demonstrate our physical superiority in the ring for one night only!!!

THIS Friday, June 16
SHOWBOX
Doors at 8 pm
(Come early this will probably sell out)

Our bout is at MIDNIGHT --

We are headlining for the Championship bout against our opponents the Tsunami Sisters (AKA Janet Galore and Heather

Hughes). So rest up, don't get too drunky, and save lots of pictures to document us making sushi of our opponents.

First we will weaken them with the "Hammer & Sickle" and then we will drop the "Iron Curtain."

Bands, Booze, Broads, and no holds barred Wrasslin'
With the Pin Down Girls:
Rat City Roller Girls,
BeerBarians (featuring Lori's daughter Teresa), Pop Roxx,
Westward Ho's (Celeste from Roq la Rue), and
masked Mexican wrestling "heels" las Diablitas (Brenda).

The bands are Lushy and the Invisible Eyes.

(LADIES WRASSLIN') For one night only, the Showbox transforms into a multimedia den of ass-kickin' inequity, as the Pin Down Girls throw down an evening of no-holds-barred, lady-on-lady tag-team wrasslin'. Among the delights:

vintage female-wrestling videos, live music by Lushy and the Invisible Eyes, and "the grudge match of the century" between the Throttle Rockets and the Westward Ho's. Best of all: Proceeds benefit 826 Seattle. DAVID SCHMADER

The Moore

Portastatic (featuring Mac McCaughan and Jim Wilbur, members of the indie rock band Superchunk) unveils an original

live score for the rarely seen silent film “The Unknown.” A 1927 masterpiece from director Tod Browning (Dracula, Freaks) stars Lon Chaney Sr. as an armless carnival knife thrower “Alonzo the Armless” and Joan Crawford as the

scantily-clad carnival girl Alonzo wants to marry.

RE-BARBARELLA @ ReBar

Jordan writes:

Hey PV, Space Virgins are hosting a night at the Rebar next Friday (June 16th). Last few we've hosted have been

crazy fun, would be great to see it in PV. Riz is spinning, we'll all be there in our silvery, spacey best, shaking

our silver booties.

Fremont Solstice Parade

FEAR-FREE FREMONT SOLSTICE PARADE, PAGEANT AND PICNIC

It's time again for the annual Solstice Parade and Pageant produced by the
Fremont Arts Council (FAC). This community produced art event begins with
the Solstice Parade on Saturday, June 17, beginning in Fremont at noon.
Fremont celebrates our community, creativity, cooperation and peace by
supporting fear-free artistic expression. The parade features uncannily
provocative art, cultivated through FAC sponsored classes. This year's
curriculum was designed and directed by parade veteran Liza Burke as
Workshop and Event Coordinator, bringing extraordinary insight and
energy to this festive occasion.

"What shall we do with our goodness?" - Peter Toms

This is the first year direct grants have been awarded to parade artists
from a fund commemorating spiritual guide and artist Dave McKay, who passed
away in 1995. FAC plans to sustain the fund through contributions to be
redistributed to artists annually in order to inspire our community's
dynamic creativity.

Melodic Meshes: Unseen Cinema

I am a big fan of Maya Deren's Meshes of the Afternoon. You need to see it if you haven't. It is from 1943 but it feels very modern as if it was shot last week on black and write film. Meshes of the Afternoon is a masterpiece!

Hi Party Volcano,

I'm writing to tell you about the Melodic Meshes: Unseen Cinema screening on 17 June at the Egyptian. The evening features avant-garde films from filmmakers such as Maya Deren, Bruce Baillie, Joseph Cornell and more.

Robin Guthrie, co-founder of Cocteau Twins, performs with legendary minimalist composer, Harold Budd, to create live soundtracks. This is a really rare opportunity because these two muscians rarely play live together. That coupled with the incredible line-up of films should make this a great performance.
