"Return To Sender" @ BLVD Gallery

And at the new BLVD Gallery- same night, right next to the Roq!
"Return To Sender"
Featuring new Paintings by Jill Simonsen and Ray Noland
June 9 - July 1, 2006
www.blvdart.com
Opening reception with the artists June 9, 2006 6pm - 9pm

BLVD Gallery is proud to present two artists whose art has an impressive sense of balance, a calming quality that is no doubt a result of both being not only talented painters but accomplished graphic designer’s as well.

New York based Jill Simonsen’s work explores the journey of both relationships and disconnection. Using inorganic elements rendered in a graphic style, the work represents various situations common to all of us. Inspired by the people around her and how they have developed and interacted with their world and each other, her paintings are both realistic and hopeful. She has exhibited her work in New York and Los Angeles, with upcoming shows in San Francisco.

Ray Noland is an artist and graphic designer living in Chicago working under the alias CRO. He is also the founder & creative director of BLACKLIST® — a Chicago-based online magazine, highlighting under the radar operators in art, design & music. His current paintings translate his digital layering process into dimensional objects highlighting depth-of-field. Using a 2-part resin to build layers as you would in screen-printing, he replicates the serendipitous arrangements and flows of rhythm. The effect is a floating sea of juicy patterns, shapes and overlapping elements - all living in a natural sense of order, suspended in time.

“I’m not trying to just copy traditional African aesthetic. I’m trying to add a new page to the book. A digital kemet approach.” —Ray Noland

Bio-diesel Homebrew Workshop

I laughed when I read this one from John:

Biodiesel Homebrew Workshop.

This class will be serve as both an introduction to biodiesel and a
hands-on experience for those interested in learning how to make biodiesel
from used restaurant oil. You will learn the chemistry and tricks of
making quality biodiesel by making small batches and experimenting with
different veg oils, catalysts, and pH indicators. We will also cover
washing, quality control, sources of supplies and equipment, and reactor
design, with an emphasis on the "Appleseed" reactor made from an
electric water heater. Other topics to be covered will include: myths and
facts about biodiesel, cold weather issues, local availabilitiy, and what's
going on locally and nationally with the movement. Whether you just
want to learn more so you can decide whether or not to use biodiesel, or
you want to make your own brew, this class will help you get underway.
After the class, students will be invited to visit a great small-scale
home biodiesel processor.

Class taught by experienced homebrewer and educator Lyle Rudensey, aka
"BioLyle" BioLyle's Biodiesel Workshop http://biolyle.com

I know that gas is becoming more and more expensive. But apple seeds?
What about getting rid of SUVs first? My friend Michael from Germany calculated that gas prices in Germany are actually at over $6 per gallon. At those prices you see people changing their habits and tastes in cars!

Location: Phinney Neighborhood Center, 6532 Phinney Ave N., Seattle
98103 from 10 AM - 3:30 PM
Max Enrollment: 30. Fee: $50 or if financial need, $30-$50 sliding scale.
10% of proceeds will be donated to NW Biodiesel Network.

Garfield Bash before the Smash

Tricia writes:

Hey Party Volcano,

Not sure if this qualifies, but this awesome event June 10 will commemorate Garfield High School as we know it today before it goes through a tremendous remodel.

Everyone is welcome to attend.
There will be mini-reunions during the day for alumnis and some feet stomping, butt shaking live entertainment that Garfield is known for, from 11 to 3.

Here's what you need to know:
Garfield's long tradition of musical talent will be tested at the Bash before the Smash when current and former Bulldogs -- spanning five decades -- take the stage in Quincy Jones Auditorium.

Everyone in attendance will find a familiar face, from Stanley Saloy, who mopped the floors at the basketball games, to Sammy Drain, who rocked out with Jimi Hendrix, to the more modern day jazz sounds of David Marriott and Ani Johnson to the current Jazz band, As-One and Conundrum. The master of ceremonies leading the show will be the infamous Jazz band leader Clarence Acox.

The final act, brought to you by Amos Miller, will welcome all the above artists to the stage for one big finale jam session.

Come to the event, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., to witness Bulldog history.
Everything you need to know is here: www.garfieldhsf.org.

Thanks!

Seattle Urban Golf Tournament

Peter writes:

Don, I'm organizing Seattle's first urban golf
tournament this coming Saturday, it would be great if
it made it in the party volcano mail.
-Peter

Here are the details:

Come join us for a raucous game of golf in the parking
lots, alleys and streets of Capitol Hill. We've had
awesome response so far and have quite a few teams
signed up.

We'll be supplying special high-density foam golf
balls to keep you drunkards from damaging cars, buildings, pedestrians
and such. We'll also provide you a rule sheet, map and extra balls for
the team captain (in case you lose some).

All you need to bring is $3, a golf club( or hockey
stick, shovel, baseball bat...), and you're best golf outfit (
http://www.seattleurbangolf.com/outfit.html ).

Here's a run down of the game play:

We set teams out about every 15 minutes on a first
come first serve basis. First you play the hole and try to score par (which is
marked on the course map). The hole will end near a bar (also
marked on the course map), which you should stop in to have a drink (or
just stop and rest and let your teammates drink up).

When the next team comes in the door, your team finishes up your drinks and sets off for the next hole. Your team captain is in charge of making sure you move along when the next team comes by. Don't
worry too much about missing out on drinking time, the latter half of
the game is a bit slower and you'll have more time at the bars.

There will be some common sense rules, like be nice to
the bartenders,
don't damage cars or pedestrians, and don't do
anything that would get the cops involved, etc.

Aside from that, you can do what you need to do to
make the game fun. Play off walls or garbage, switch
or steal team players, skip around
on the map (if your team is too inebriated to find it) etc.

This is a costumed event, so make your Goodwill/Value Village runs
early. Expect argyle socks, plaid pants and smart sport coats to be
picked through early.

Independent Exposure @ Central Cinema

Hello Party Volcano,

I’m writing to let you know that the latest Independent Exposure takes place on 14 June at the Central Cinema. This month’s program is the Animation Edition - a program of animated shorts from The Netherlands, Canada, Germany, Japan, United Kingdom and the United States. A description of the program is further below. It’d be great if you could please cover this in next week’s Stranger.

Sure, I'll cover it in next week's Stranger! But how?

5 a.m. by Michiel van Bakel, The Netherlands, 2002, DV, Color, 1:15
A video that plays a refined game with slices of time in the city of Rotterdam. The matter-of-fact presence of a police-horsewoman on the large square that is the historic center, changes into a surrealist and heroic monument.

Don Volcano’s Computer Corner.

I have a bunch of links that are kind of follow ups on previously discussed topics. Let me just throw them over the fence to you.

Regarding 6/6/06 I found this guy, who was trying to sell his coin collection for $666.66. I think it was a scam:

666 The Devil's Coin Collection
http://cgi.ebay.com/A-WELL_W0QQitemZ9525927823

Last week we talked about Parkour. This site provides step by step instruction on how to run up a wall and flip:

How to Run up a Wall and Flip
http://www.wikihow.com/Run-up-a-Wall-and-Flip

Another sort of sports related clip is this one. It's a Bell South commercial but it's so over the top that I think it is worth mentioning it:

Kung Fu Clowns

The last link for this week doesn't really fit into any category. It is a sweet one but still funny:

Until next week,
