Oksana Badrak and Miles Thompson @ Roq la Rue

I think this will be a good show. Let me know if you have time on Friday and want to spin at Roq la Rue. Kirsten is looking for a DJ.

Roq la Rue Gallery
Presents
Oksana Badrak
And
Miles Thompson

Opening Friday Dec 9th 6-10pm

Roq La Rue is pleased to present the works of two artist who are making big ripples in the Pop Surrealism pond, Oksana Badrak and Miles Thompson.

Russian born Oksana Badrak’s work is highlighted by an enigmatic perfection. With its dreamy surrealism and incredible detail, Oksana Badrak's work exists in a dimension of her own. Presenting fantastical visual experiences made from amalgamations of graphic fiction and tightly rendered reality. Inspired by a range of experiences from everything from Asian supermarkets to the Southern California desert, her work creates a beckoning landscape…a place where pop-culture icons and images from an organic world seemingly get along together, though the space between them is filled with friction. Combining disparate elements in her work, both in use of imagery (such as wildlife and Victorian parlors) as well as technique (painted elements on digital work) Oksana has attracted attention from both the graphic art scene as well as admiration from high art academia.

Miles Thompson (Los Angeles) creates idealistic worlds reminiscent of the 50’s –60’s quest for exotica (such as the emergence of tiki bars) as well as the general public’s fascination with the bohemian world of jazz and beatniks. His work is evocative of artists such as Jim Flora, yet have an added modern lo fi pop quirkiness. His new series is focusing on the idea of the Calendar Girl pin up- still prevalent in our culture today. Miles’ retro environments create scenes that are technically exciting to look at as well as shamelessly fun.

OPENING Reception this Friday, December 9, 2005 at KOBO at Higo

Tim Foss Illustrations (ink and watercolor on paper and wood)
Opening Reception, Dec. 9, Friday, 6 - 8 pm
KOBO at Higo
Dec. 9 - Jan. 7, 2005

"These are works about translucence. Using thin tracing papers for ink drawings, or painting a thin wash of absorbent ground over wood or stone, I’ve created paintings that barely exist. The subject matter is a range of things that are desirable to draw and interesting to study. Some pieces are about soft stuffed toys, some are about trees, some are about clouds. What’s consistent among all of these subjects is their consistency in my life. They have always been there as comforts."

"Bloody Mess" @ On the Boards

Sara writes:

Hi Party Volcano,

We’re really excited for the show opening next Thursday at On the Boards, and I wanted to make sure you had it on your radar. Forced Entertainment is the UK’s legendary, experimental theater group (often called the Wooster Group of the UK) and they are making their Seattle debut with “Bloody Mess.” The show is December 8-11 and we are so thrilled to finally be bringing them. “Bloody Mess” takes a series of mismatched characters, stories and events (like fighting clowns, a woman dressed as a pantomime gorilla, strobe lights and smoke) and creates a whole that is intelligent, darkly comic and unexpectedly moving.

This is definitely a not-to-miss show. I put a few more details below.

“A get-down-and-get-dirty, thrilling, horrible, fantastic, cathartic, wet and sticky two hours.” –Total Theatre

Forced Entertainment - (UK)
Bloody Mess
December 8-11, 8pm
$24

An epic work for 10 performers, Bloody Mess defies description and categorization. Influenced by popular culture, cinema, contemporary art and the occasional dash of heavy metal thrown in for good measure, Bloody Mess is Forced Entertainment at its best – uncompromising political Pop Art, ironic physically demanding camp trash, visual spectacle that tries to describe the modern world in all of its beauty, horror and complexity.

“Britain’s most brilliant experimental theatre company” Guardian

“A wonderfully playful theatrical game on the nature of illusion, narrative and laughter… It is ridiculously good. ****” The Guardian

Twentyfour bucks. I don't know.

New Moves Concert @ Velocity MainSpace Theater

More rolling on the floor:

New Moves Concert
Dance Image Above design by Diana Riesenberger
Choreography by Dance Department students.

The concert will introduce Seattle audiences to emerging choreographers and performers and will include
an eclectic array of dance styles. Dance pieces range from an intimate duet by Rebecca Morris and Annie
Kohn’s to Victor Reyes’ creative utilization of Color Guard flags. In Pilar Villaneuva’s piece, the
choreography is inspired by a 14th Century painting. In one of the three sections of this work, the dancers
travel meditatively through poses in period costumes. Rochelle Rapaszky’s upbeat dance, “That’s Hot,”
performed to music by Rjd2, is full of social commentary. Other choreographers on the program are Sarah
Adamski, Jessica Finn, Tonya Goodwillie, Geoff Johnson, and Nicholas Strasburg.

Produced in collaboration with the Performance Production Department.

Tickets: $5 general, $3 students and seniors & Cornish College alumni.
Tickets can be purchased through Ticket Window at 206.325.6500, www.ticketwindowonline.com, or in person at one of the three Ticket Window box offices (Broadway Market, Pike Place Market, and Bellevue’s Meydenbauer Center).

I am wondering: What if Santa was gay? This Saturday would look quite different. Well, the GMP is also participating:

Hey Santa-Guerrillas!

Do you have your Santa suits ready yet? Just over a week left until
we hit the streets with hundreds of Santas for SANTARCHY 2005!

The fun begins at 12 noon on Saturday, December 10th at the Ballard
Smoke Shop (5439 Ballard Ave, just off Market) and will end at
SeaCompression - A huge party being thrown at Consolidated Works (500
Boren Ave N, near the REI store) starting at 9pm. Where we'll stop
and what we'll do in between is still a secret, but will surely
involve some stops at bars and a lot of fun. Not able to meet us at
noon? Have no fear! We'll be sending out info next week on how you
can to get in touch with the Santas and catch up with us later in the day.

Don't have a Santa suit already, and don't have the time or money to
buy one? No problem! You can pick up an inexpensive Santa hat at
most local grocery and drugstores. Throw on some holiday colored
clothes and you're ready to join the fun! Or get creative: Dig out
those holiday decorations and turn yourself into a walking Christmas
Tree... Throw a wreath around your neck... cover yourself in tinsel...
Anything goes!

Feeling the urge to go all out? Do what a lot of Santas are doing and
create Misfit Toys to give away to girls and boys. Santa Dirty Bunny
has been cutting apart and sewing together stuffed animals he got at
the Goodwill for about 50 cents a piece, creating all new hybrid
animals. Other Santas are cutting apart wooden and plastic toys and
gluing them together in new and interesting ways. And there are some
Santas getting 'toys' ready for the big kids, too. Even if you don't
have the time or resources to make Misfit Toys, it's always a good
idea to have something to give to kids -- candy canes are a great
option, and cheap!

To children, Santa Claus stands for all that's good in the world. He
gives them love and toys and, for some children, hope that life can
get better. The chance to personify such a powerful figure doesn't
come around every day -- and it's a great experience to see the joy in
children's eyes when you give them a hug and a gift. How could you
not want to do that?!! Come on out and join the fun!

THE SNOWFLAKE FACTORY
Written & directed by Jonah Von Spreecken

WORLD PREMIERE PERFORMANCE!
All is not well in the Factory of Cold. Snow production is pitiful. Icicles are considered too dangerous for the general populace. Sleet and hail manufacturing has dropped off the scale, and blustery winds just aren’t “in” anymore. Malevolent factory foreman Mr. Slurch is none too pleased, so he bids workers in the Factory of Cold to come up with “The Next Big Thing.” But what will that be? What new idea will put the Factory of Cold back on the map? Conceived and directed by Jonah Von Spreecken, THE SNOWFLAKE FACTORY is a theatrical event that brings to life an icy, arctic wonderland. Appropriate for all ages. Bring a warm coat.
