Events from 9/30 to 10/6/2005

My favorites are private events like Steve Miller getting married to a Pile of Dirt and a Naked Toe Sushi birthday party in Wallingford where I can even bring Joe (my new li'l dog) to.
Either way, there are plenty of other events that I can recommend this week. I think Amanda Koster's AIDS is Knocking will be a fine show, then there is the Degenerate Art Ensemble show on Saturday, and Wazhma is having an opening on Saturday.

And check out that weird Johnny Jetpack Launch #48 on Sat!

Not a bad week if you ask me.

SOIL AUCTION THIS FRIDAY September 30, Western Bridge, 7pm

SOIL, a non-profit arist co-op based in the Tashiro-Kaplan building, is
having their yearly auction at stately Western Bridge gallery this
year.
I have donated a piece, "Let me introduce you to bad vibes", a
watercolor and ink multi-media work on paper exploring sentiency of
one's moods, to the auction. Other great artists have donated too, so
make sure to take advantage of this chance to own quality, known work.

(more details below)

**Secondly: Look for my work to be show soon at Zebra Club (Cap Hill)
and Fremont Coffee. Dates TBA

***Thirdly: After a very rough month, as many of you have probably
heard, I am back at work on the Cult of Youth project. Here's a sneak
peak into Cult of Youth reader Vol I:

Theme: Traveling beyond our means
-The Cult of Youth is looking for members! (M. Goldin) - Introduction
to
the project and sideshow-like banter
-Travel Queeries (E. Graney-Saucke)- collaboration with Elliat's
European queer youth inquiry from Barcelona to Berlin
-Journaling Southeast Asia (L. Gjoring) - 'Rae' goes to the ends of the
world on her seminal youth exploration and reports back about looking
through young eyes at a world in its twilight
-Life and Death and Keeping Up (M. Goldin) - a dirge about mortality
-Opressed? (M. Knezek) - Margaritte talks about her work and
experiences
with youth culture and status quo in Brazil
-CoY Culture Corner

+more to come (the older generation on the younger generation, CoY from

Port Townsend Kinetic Sculpture Races

A Guerrilla Masquerade Party Recommended Event:

Hey Guerrillas!

It seems that Fall is quickly falling on us -- the rain is back, the
warmth of the sun is fading, Burning Man is behind us, and Halloween
is fast approaching. And one other annual Autumnal event is coming up
fast -- the Port Townsend Kinetic Sculpture Races!

Kinetic Sculpture Races happen in various cities each year, and
involve people-powered vehicles racing across everything from mud, to
water, to sand. To meet the challenge, the vehicles end up very
unique, and tend to look like parade floats on steroids. Well worth
the trip to Port Townsend, for sure.

Sunday, October 2, our very own Marshall will be racing his
Atomic Scorpion:

Johnny Jetpack Launch #48 @ Gasworks Park

Maybe it's a guy thing: blowing shit up and building a useless device just for the fun of seeing it taking off the ground. I love it!

Johnny Jetpack will take to the skies at Gasworks Park Sat. Oct. 1 at 3:00 pm.

If you haven't been to a launch before, this is a must-see event, certain to amuse, edify, and entertain the whole family. Here's a description from Nathan Arnold, the genius behind Johnny:

Johnny Jetpack is a 7 and a half foot tall puppet/dummy attached to a giant water rocket backpack. When launched, he obtains heights of 70-90 feet and speeds of 50+ miles per hour in about one second. He then plummets earthward in a dramatic fashion. This plummet includes a complex system of "parachute for Jetpack", pilot ejection, screams and flailing limbs, and on-board explosion with head detachment.

Hope to see you there.

Degenerate Art Ensemble Benefit @ ConWorks

Hello Friends of Degenerate Art Ensemble!

PARTY!! **OCTOBER 1st**

Degenerate Art Ensemble is in the process of creating their next HUGE project at
the Moore Theater to be premiered in March '06!! This is a music/dance
otherworldly large scale theater work that we are INSANELY excited about. In
preparation we have: gotten black eyes, lost our minds, worked for more than a
year... We could not be more excited about this show!

AND!! You have the chance coming OCTOBER 1st to help make this project happen!
The Seattle Theater Group (The Moore/Paramount) are presenting this show in
their 2005/06 season! BUT, we have LOTS of money to raise in order to make it
happen.

SO!! We have organized the funnest way possible for you to help us raise the
funds to make this show happen. We are (along with all of our friends)
throwing the party of the year on October 1st at Consolidated Works.

We will have:

A sneak preview of our new work!
Music by Degenerate Art Ensemble, Infernal Noise Brigade and more!
A surprise by Seattle School!
Trapese Girls!
Wrestling!
Full Bar! Food!

AND MUCH MORE!!!

All you have to do is bring your $5-15 sliding scale (and much more if you can
afford it) and a thirst for art/drinks/food/fun!

Seattle School will also be there with their new Rorschach Translations:

Degenerate Art Ensemble is throwing a huge art party at Consolidated Works
to raise funds for their coming dance work Cuckoo Crow AND the release of
their new CD Bastress on Tellous Records. Because Seattle School
supa-hearts DAE, SS will be unveiling the world premiere of a new work
entitled "Rorschach Translation". This new music piece straddles the worlds
of aural and visual arts, slaps a common inexplicable language between them,
and blurts out the abstract hybrid. Stick in a heavy dose of communication
breakdown and audience participation and VOILA! another Seattle School
masterpiece. Read full description below.

Rorschach Translation

The ensemble consists of a conductor/whisperer, three visual artists, and
three musicians (arbitrary instruments).

The whisperer will whisper something (without using words) to the nearest
audience member and ask them to pass it on down the row to subsequent
audience members (like the telephone game). At the end of the row, the
whisperer will wait until the passed whisper gets whispered into the ear of
the last audience member in that row. The whisperer will then grab that
audience member and have him/her whisper what he/she has heard into an
artist's ear, taking precautions to not be overheard by the others. The
artist will physically manifest (sketch, sculpt, paint, etc.) his/her
interpretation/impression of what was whispered into his/her ear. The
manifestation will be projected behind the ensemble where the musicians
cannot see it. Upon finishing, the artist will place the rendered
interpretation in front of a musician. The musician will sonically manifest
his/her interpretation/impression of the artist's rendering. The musician
will play only what is in front of him/her presently. The musician will
play until the rendering is removed from his/her music stand. The musician
will NOT listen to the other musicians. Meanwhile, the whisperer will
listen to the ensemble and whisper different or similar things to other
audience members to be eventually whispered to the subsequent artists and
then repeat the process. The artists may give their sketches to whichever
musician they choose.

The piece will continue for an indeterminate amount of time. The
conductor/whisperer will stop the ensemble by taking away the sketches from
the musicians when it is appropriate.

The Last Tandav Show

James writes:

Ladies and Gentlemen.

I hope you are doing very well! I am well and very busy!

Let me begin by saying that yes, the rumors are true! Saturday,
October 1st will be the last Tandav show ever.

Deepayan and I are going to be concentrating on doing shows for our
group Mean Deep. We are actually in the process of making
arrangements to do some shows in New York City in October, and then
doing a tour into California and Oregon in mid November. Look out
Portland, Eugene, San Fran and LA. We are planning to see you soon!

...

It has been a year of rocking dancing, and good juju. It has been
fun, beautiful and soul fulfiling, but now is the time for us to move
on to new venues and opportunities.

We hope you can make it to this the final Tandav show. It should be
very fun and only slightly nostalgic. It might be wise to come to
this show if you haven't come because then you will be able to say
that back in the day you saw Mean Deep with Gringo Starr at this cool
little club called Tost in Fremont, in Seattle. Back before they all
became huge . . . ☺!!! Word to the wise and the clairvoyant!

Here's the last little lowdown:

Featuring:
Baba James & Shri Deepayan (aka Mean Deep):
Rocking dancing music powered by vocals, throat singing, tabla, sarod,
darbouka, and live original beats and loops.

Gringo Starr:
Latin and Brazilian House music on the turntables
Cover is $5

Khamsa! Ase! Come on out!

So it's now Baba James. I looked up "Baba" at Wikipedia and learned that it is some sort of honorable title for gurus and high ranked aristocrats in cast societies. What a bold self-upgrade! Do we have to approach Her Majesty Baba James now with a bow?

Maybe not yet...

Tandav at Tost (513 N. 36th, in Fremont)
Show starts at 9:45pm
Goes til closing time

SOIL 1995>2005: A Retrospective Exhibition

SOIL 1995>2005: A Retrospective Exhibition

October 6-30, 2005
Opening Reception Thursday, October 6, 6-9pm
Gallery hours: Thurs–Sun, 12-5pm

An exhibition celebrating ten incredible years of
SOIL, concurrent with the release of the full-color
publication of SOIL ARTIST-RUN GALLERY 1995>2005 which
is available at SOIL.

SOIL is an artist-run gallery with a mission to act as
a venue for emerging artists and challenging new art.
Since its inception in 1995, the group has showcased
more than 140 exhibitions involving over 600 artists,
ranging from provocative group shows, strong solo
shows, and events outside gallery walls, including
such innovative shows as Goods and Collections &
Creations, both featured at the Bumbershoot Arts
Festival. SOIL Artist-Run Gallery 1995 > 2005
celebrates the collective impact of SOIL’s ten years
as a catalyst and vital part of contemporary art in
the Northwest.

The growth and success of SOIL continues to rely on a
constantly evolving roster of artists. Through
encouraging new memberships, collaborations with
artists beyond the group, and offering curatorial
opportunities to a diverse spectrum of shows, SOIL has
evolved organically into a unique hybrid organization
that fills the gap between a commercial gallery and
museum.

“Undaunted by change and shifting locales, this
collective has managed to sustain its operations
without losing sight of its mission. With its recent
relocation to the Tashiro-Kaplan Building near Pioneer
Square, SOIL continues to be at the forefront of
vanguard art, reinvigorating the city with a creative
critical conscience…”
—Jill Conner

In addition to this special event book launch and
fundraising auction at Western Bridge, SOIL will
present a month-long October exhibition featuring work
from a cross-section of artist members, past and
present, that have helped make SOIL what it is over
the last ten years.

Sam Magnotto @ Retail Therapy

Wazhma writes:

On October 6th we will continue to participate with 20 other locations and be part of the Capitol Hill Art walk. This month we are featuring the work of Sam Magnotto

Sam Magnotto was born in Seattle. He graduated from the University of California Santa Cruz with a B.A. in Environmental Studies, but was granted permission to attend studio art classes during his studies. Taking a year off from school, he moved to Florence, Italy where he lived with an exchange family and studied art intensively at the Accademia d'Arte for two semesters. Recently, he has been working, traveling, and painting. He has exhibited in various galleries and other venues in Santa Cruz, California, Breckenridge, Colorado, and Florence. He recently moved back to Seattle and continues to create and exhibit his art here.

With an eclectic style that changes constantly, Sam always anticipates displaying his work and creating an open dialogue among the viewers. His newest show at Retail Therapy, entitled “What I Learned this Summer” contains several recently completed pieces that speak to the assorted approaches that he takes when depicting life lessons on canvas.

Sam writes : “Since I was old enough to draw, art has always been the medium I use to portray views and emotions that words cannot express. To me art has been, and always will be, a subjective medium. As soon as I finish a piece, its interpretation becomes as diverse and multifaceted as the person viewing it. Art has the ability to say so much with so little and I have a lot to say, so I thank you for taking the time to view my work”

Please come join us for the Art opening on Thursday October 6th . Snacks wine and great company will be provided as always. Everyone is welcome
