Events for 10/27 - 11/2/2006

Wow, I have got so many Halloween parties I can barely keep up with counting them. GMP alone sent me a list with 36 Halloween related events and parties.
That list reminded me on the Party Volcano Halloween Consumer Report we did a few years ago - so I have added a separate column called "GMP's Halloween Consumer Report". It's hard to pick a favorite. But if you ask me: pick a good private party and never switch. Using that formula I would end up with The Castaway Lounge (unfortunately I am not allowed to mention the details because it's a private party).

Circus Contraption's JINXED @ The Showbox

Dear Party Volcano,
Here's a Halloween Party not to be missed! Featuring fabulous local and Northwest performers and musicians. Thanks for letting your readers know--
- Acrophelia of Circus Contraption

Circus Contraption presents “JINXED”
A Halloween Blowout Extravaganza Spectacular

Circus Contraption presents..."JINXED": A Halloween Blowout Extravaganza Spectacular with Circus Contraption, the March Fourth Marching Band, Orkestar Zirkonium,
vaudevillian Scotty Walsh performing Houdini's water escape, acrobatic martial arts troupe Nanda, and a live reenactment of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" zombie dance!

Fresh from the high of their critically acclaimed two-month run in New York City, Circus Contraption has assembled what just might be the most spine-tingling collection of musicians, vaudevillians, dancers, zombies, acrobats and trouble-makers ever collected on one stage, for one admission price, in the history of Halloween. This historic event will blow your wig off with the force of a 35-member marching band, strapping young acrobats, Balkan Brass music, harrowing escapes, shadow puppetry, blood, guts and sexy zombies galore. Costumes highly encouraged- we can't be held responsible for what might happen to those who dare to attend a Halloween event entitled "Jinxed" without a costume!

PLEASURE & PAIN: A Body Systems Dark Art Party

What's up with the prices at CHAC? Twenty bucks? For this?

We've been at the Capitol Hill Arts Center all week setting up for Pleasure & Pain and it looks fantastic! CoRE is in town, Betty X is sound checking, PURE Cirkus is running final rehearsals, Mankind is Obsolete is on the road, Shift is packing up and DJ Catherinna is picking out her favorite tracks. Tonight we'll be putting up the art of A.S. Koi and Jason Soles. Add some finishing touches and we'll be all set for...

PIRATES & HOES DANCE PARTY @ The War Room

Happy Hollaween...

Hope all is well with you. So many things going on this weekend to celebrate one of our favorite times of the year. But for sure NOT to miss this event. Rather than just throwing another "conventional" Halloween event, this year we dare orselves to try something a little different, a pirate party. Regardless the theme of the party, you're not required to dress like a pirate or a hoe or a slutty pirate for that matter. You can wear whatever Halloween costume you're already planning on. Anyway, just have a good time and join the festivities!

Cheers!

Again, CHAC prices seem a little bit steep. I think $30 is a bit pricy for dancing with smelly hippies.

Hive Mind Halloween 2006

Jordan's Hive Mind Halloween Parties are legendary. Every year his Halloween Party has been my top pick (my second pick has usually been the Castaway Lounge in West Seattle). Unfortunately I was never allowed to list Hive Mind Halloween here, because it was a private party. This year is the first time that the Hive Mind Halloween Party has been opened to the public. But it will not be at Jordan's lovely house and it won't be for free. I am just wondering: is this maybe a case of "same song only with different lyrics and different melody"? In other words are we still talking about the same Hive Mind Halloween Party at Jordan's house I could rave about? What about the helium karaoke stage? What about the police showing up at 1:00am? What about the packed house and the long lines in front of the bathroom? I guess you will have to see for yourself!

Jordan writes:

Hey Party Volcano, I'm pleased to let ya know that this year's Hive Mind Halloween party is open to all the lovely readers of Party Volcano. We finally got a space big enough to handle the throngs if we throw the doors open, so open they're thrown. This year, in addition to the usual dancing to house and breakbeat DJ's, we've got a multi-ethnic bent with Bhangra and Eritrean DJ's, Bollywood dancers, and reggaeton and soul bands. Of course, we'll have the usual Hive Mind mayhem, with school nurses performing physicals, dean's handing out detention slips and the like. Two full bars and all profits are going to a couple of awesome charities, Room to Read and Youngstown Cultural Center.

And here are the details:

GREASE FRIGHTENING
Hive Mind Halloween 2006

Hive Mind Halloween continues to grow. In 2006, we're teaming up with Metrobon and moving to the Youngstown Cultural Center just off the West Seattle Bridge.

Join us as we twist it back old skool-style. Enjoy some quality liquor in the faculty lounge, get an examination from the school nurse, but be careful you don't get a detention slip, because punishment will be doled out to bad boys and girls. And if you want to get into a good college, you're going to need some extracurricular activities! Groups of 5 or more who arrive dressed as a club (e.g., math club, cheerleading squad) and ready with a shtick will get a set of drink tickets for the group*!

It's not school without a talent show, and the oh-so-multicultural Ridehell High has many talents: a fashion show, Forgotten Sol (Funk), DJ Advent (East Indian), Pujanbian Charm (Bollywood), Raq Serpentine (Experimental Bellydance) and DJ Manny (Eritrean). Of course, it wouldn't be a Hive Mind party without all night dancing to the hottest Northwest DJ's, including DjML (Tribal / Tech House), Diem (Hardtribaldisco), Mychosis (Nu School Breaks), Sweet Chris Bell and Baz (Psytrance).

$10 presale, $15 at the door. Tickets will be available through Brown Paper Tickets and several retail outlets, including Metro on Broadway (who are offering 20% off costume sales when you buy or show a Hive Mind ticket).

As in past years, all profits will be donated to charity, this year Room to Read, building schools, providing scholarships and more for girls in Nepal, Laos, and other countries, and Youngstown, providing arts education to underprivileged youth and a home for arts education and environmental organizations.

When: Saturday, Oct 28th, 2006, 9 pm - late
Where: Youngstown Cultural Arts Center New Location!
4408 Delridge Way SW, (West) Seattle ( map)
What: Party, Costumes Required

$10 presale, $15 at the door. No costume, no entry.

DJ Godfather @ Des Amis

DJ Godfather's returning to Seattle after a 5+ year absence!

Saturday, Oct 28th @ Des Amis. It's not a big venue so we've set up some
advance tickets to secure admission. Bootylib's also working together with
Plasmodium and are offering a limited joint cover price for Neumos (Akufen)
and Des Amis. You can get $5 off. Wear your costume and run back and forth
between the two venues. They're less than a block away from one another.
Just watch out for the freaks!

Halloween piano concert @ Seattle Public Library.

Dear PV,

I have an upcoming Halloween event that your readers may enjoy.
Halloween piano concert at the downtown Seattle Public Library.
Attached is the p.r. statement that went out, as well as the poster.
Thanks for considering listing out event.

Please contact me if you have questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Peter

The program will include the sinister sounds of Musorgsky, Messiaen, Rachmaninoff, and others, including original works. Join us in the downtown Public Library main auditorium. Styles will vary from jazz to new music to early 20th century classical -- with a focus on the macabre. There will be door prizes, costumes, and ... A FOG MACHINE!! The program will include the sinister sounds of Mussorsky, Messiaen, Rachmaninoff, and others including original works in the downtown Public Library main auditorium.

Critics have hailed the new Rem Koolhaas-designed Central Library as one of the most significant works of public architecture to be built in a generation, and some even go as far as to predict that it will become an icon of the city, like the Space Needle.

If that proves to be the case, the $165.5 million-dollar library is worth every penny — but there's much more to the library than its rugged good looks. The Central Library single-handedly redefines the popular notion of what a library should be: Its departments flow intuitively into each other; its nonfiction books are arranged in a continuous spiral; and its reference desk is called the "mixing chamber" and is staffed by librarians who aren't locked down to desks (they communicate with each other through the use of wireless, "Star Trek"-style communication badges).

The Seattle Public Library is the Macintosh of public libraries, designed for ease of use. And like the Mac, it just happens to look good and cost a lot of money.

Bodies ...The Exhibition

Shango writes:

Hello Friends,

I want to encourage you to look into seeing the BODIES exhibition while it is in Seattle . The exhibition is real human bodies that have been lovingly and creatively dissected so that we can have a more profound appreciation of what it is to be human. I went because I thought it would be cool but I walked away with a greater sense of humility and astonishment in the body.

The dissections are brilliantly done. For example, in one they replace all the blood in the body with a liquid plastic. Then the plastic hardens and they remove all the flesh. What you are left with is a model of the entire circulatory system that stands on its own. Amazing!

I suggest going on a weekday morning if possible. We pretty much had the whole place to ourselves.

Cheers,

Shango

The Way We Get By + Rockstar Heroes @ VAIN

Hi Don Volcano,

here's the scoop on an event coming up @ VAIN. Great art, great cause, VAIN style.

The Way We Get By + Rockstar Heroes @ VAIN

First Thursday Art Opening Party Thurs Nov 2nd, 6 - 10pm

The Way We Get By, photos of local musicians at work on + offstage
by Breanne Koselke

-and-

Rockstar Heroes, stencils of music icons on canvas
by Michael Lane

With DJ Teenage Rampage, an art raffle to support the Vera Project, + a you-be-the-band photo shoot with VAIN-styled rock models

More Info

The Way We Get By takes a photographic view of how some local musicians continue to make rent and make music, capturing them in their worlds of day job employee and onstage performer. Members of The Divorce, The Catch, USE, Kane Hodder, Siberian, and Schoolyard Heroes appear in these photos by Breanne Koselke.

Rockstar Heroes takes artist Michael Lane back to his salvaging roots- these stencil portraits of music icons are painted on old opera canvas backdrops cut down to small sizes. The musicians featured in this series include David Bowie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Debbie Harry, Siouxie Sioux, and Patti Smith.

The First Thursday opening reception for these artists’ shows will be on November 2nd from 6 to 10pm and will feature DJ Teenage Rampage (spinning music inspired by ‘Rockstar Heroes’ subjects) and a you-be-the-band photo shoot, where people can pose with VAIN-styled rock models. In addition, both artists have generously offered to donate a piece of art each to a raffle benefiting The Vera Project’s Capital Campaign. The art + raffle will run through the end of November.

GMP's Halloween Consumer Report

Do you remember Party Volcano's Halloween Consumer Report - I think it was in 2001? This email from the Guerrilla Masquerade Parade reminded me on our report we did years ago. Instead of listing every event separately, I'll just give you the whole list at once.

Good work GMP!

John sent out a party update with other Halloween parties. But I think they are private, so I will only list the location names and the hosts. Please contact John directly at John_Schlick@Hotmail.com if you would like to receive his party updates and if you want to get the details fro the following (most likely private) Halloween parties:

- The Ross Brothers' 19th Annual Halloween Costume Party (@ the Castaway Lounge) on Fri.
- John & Connie's Halloween Bash 2006 on Sat / I5, exit 240
- First annual Halloween party in West Seattle on 32nd Ave (Sat).

While we are at the topic the one private party I was allowed to mention here has been cancelled:

Fourth Annual Quinault Halloween
http://www.quinaulthalloween.com/

But now let's move on to GMP's Halloween party recommendations.

Hey Guerrillas!

It's that time of year when costume events crawl out of the woodwork, so we spent some time compiling a list of events going on in the Puget Sound area that you might enjoy. From Haunted Houses to Cruises, Costume Parties to Runs, events in Seattle to events in Olympia and Mill Creek, All Ages events to 21+ ones, we've got a bit of everything in here. So if you're still not sure how to spend the next week, check out these ideas.

Our Fave Picks are the Hive Mind Halloween Party Saturday (21+, $10, All proceeds go to charities) & the Zombie Walk Sunday (All ages, guerrilla event, w/ dinner and movies to follow).

Enjoy! And maybe we'll see you out on the town!

GMP

ps - if there are any professional make-up artists out there looking for some Halloween work, email us at gmpseattle@earthlin k.net so we can pass the info on to a fellow Guerrilla looking to hire someone.
