Events for 3/3 to 3/9/2006

This has been a pretty busy week for me. I still somehow managed to compile this list and even downgrade Mapa Corpa.

The computer corner still owes you the link to a brilliant web site about useless data. I decided to squeeze in a video that has been circulating this week. It is very funny. I also talk a little bit about sites where you can find other funny clips and videos.

Seattle University Fine Arts Department Highwire Performing Arts Series presents “Other Jello”, the second showing in a series of works in progress, by Maureen Whiting and her company. A short discussion of choreographic ideas and research with the audience will follow the forty-five minute showing. Please come, enjoy and share your insights. It is free to the public!

Where: Seattle University is located between Broadway and 12th on Capital Hill. Enter Seattle University on Madison Street between 12th Avenue and Broadway. Go to the Fine Arts Building which is to the left. For more detailed directions please check Seattle University at www.seattleu.edu .

The Maureen Whiting Company will show movement theater ideas, dance research with original text with company members Laurentia Barbu, Tamin Totzke, Frances Hearn, Maureen Whiting, and Ezra Dickenson. Music is created by local composers Dave Abramson, and Evan Schiller. A focus of this residency is research, outreach, and education.

Seattle University is located between Broadway and 12th on Capital Hill.

Mapa Corpa @ ConWorks

This is either a new low-point for ConWorks, or it is a brilliant joke:

Mapa Corpa Premieres Seattle at ConWorks this Friday

In Mapa Corpa, visionary artist Guillermo Gomez-Pena and his company La Pocha Nostra creates a poetic interactive ritual exploring neo-colonization through acupuncture and the poetic reenactment of the post-9/11 "body politic."

As the audience enters the space, they come across a troubling yet familiar image: a human body lies on a surgical table covered by the U.S. flag. Standing over her, an acupuncturist dressed in a lab coat intently prepares for surgery laying out 40 needles. On closer observation it becomes apparent that a small colorful flag is attached to the tip of each needle, representing one of the nations belonging to the alleged "coalition forces." Gomez-Pena , in his techno-shaman-in-drag persona, walks around the tableaux and throughout the space, erasing the boundaries between viewer and performer…

In the second part of the evening, audience members are offered an opportunity to fulfill their "intellectual fantasies" and engage in "X-treme role playing." Supplied with costumes, make-up, and the support of the artists, they undergo an "identity make-over". Once transformed, Gomez-Pena integrates them into an ever-evolving living diorama: One that comments on the obsessive culture of role-playing and the mindless interactivity displayed in reality TV and at the same time invites audiences to become "instant performance artists" and co-create a vision of the future.

In contrast to the melancholic and sentimental feelings engendered by the first half of the evening, this second part tends to be much more playful and extravagant. However, audience members still have to make ethical and political decisions as they participate in this "performance Karaoke" game…

Look at this Guillermo Gomez-PiƱata guy:
http://www.conworks.org/images/lg_mapacorpa.jpg

What is he holding in his hand? It looks like hardened poop to me.
Maybe it symbolizes the U.S. exploiting the Third World?
I am sure it must have something to do with "poetic interactive ritual exploring neo-colonization through acupuncture and the poetic reenactment of the post-9/11 body politic." What a bunch of crap. Definitely not worth the $24 if you ask me.

Well done, ConWorks. Once again one of your shows got me really thinking about the world we are living in. I can't wait to see the schedule for next week!

Kozy Kino: Afterlife

This is it folks. This is possibly the last Kozy Kino for a month or more. The Degenerate Art Ensemble present their big show soon (which I urge you to buy a ticket for now!) and then there will be a 4-day performance that I must prepare a great deal for (more on that soon as well). So work, work and more of that. Ah but I wish

I could do nothing but watch amazing films for days on end.
In a way, thats what the characters in this weeks feature film, Afterlife, get to do after they die. Recently deceased souls come to stay in an old institutional building where they are interviewed by special counselors whose jobs are to assemble one coherent and vivid memory from their past. These souls will spend the rest of eternity in this memory. Its very special very endearing how Hirokazu Koreeda makes the afterlife seem as bureaucratic and magical as this world can sometimes be. I havent'shown a film in a while that has the affect that Afterlife does its at once life affirming and existential.

Drink Special: Sencha tea and hot'sake dont'seem like theyd go well with popcorn!

The Kozy Kino is an underground cinema that infuses diverse film programming with thematic beverage service. Programming is, as yet, still irregular but, as oft is possible, we will throw down the homemade cushions, fire up the video beamer and concoct delicious refreshments to wash down the freshly popped corn. Each featured film is a wonder of cinema coupled with shorts and inspirational drink specials.

Its a cheap night of uninstitutionalized quality entertainment and a fine example of underground economy.

Please take notice of the location change (listed at top). The original space has been ruthlessly gutted by the greedy cokehead landlord. So it is now a repertory thing, and we are very excited and grateful to be hosted by the Perfect Room an ideal locale. Its still an intimate experience (read: seating is limited), but its the sort of thing that this town needs more of (e.g. the speakeasy, the peoples kitchen, the Sunday sermon, the peoples' underground surgical theater, etc.). Help breathe some life into this 'theme park of a city'
now and start your own! If someone doesnt'soon, I swear Im moving!
questions? contact: inphaseprod@yahoo.com and oh yeah, Kino means cinema in German, Russian, etc. ... so please don't write me asking!

CLUB ATTACK! @ Broken Disco

Friday, March 3rd
Located @ CHAC Lower Level
*Plus Caroline Distribution Listening Party in the Lounge @ 9:30 (More info below)

Synth Club (Featuring Reggie Watts, Nordic Soul, Steven Scalfati and Daniel Spils)
"Five synths + one effects-laden microphone + one laptop = one helluva
house-music juggernaut. Featuring the robustly soulful vocals of Maktub
frontman Reggie Watts and the on-the-fly beat-making of Nordic Soul
(Decibel festival organizer Sean Horton), Synth Club reinvigorate house's decadent
4/4 rhythms with rapturous live improvisation. They're like a jam band--but
with all the boring, marathon solos removed. Seattle's Synth Club (featuring
Maktub's frontman) tickle out lush, improvised yet'soulful house for
sophisticated dancers who haven't waved glow sticks in years." DAVE
SEGAL
(The Stranger)

Scream Club (Olympia)
Scream Club is the Queer Electro Sex Hop Hip Pop Punk Rock Rap Duo hailing
from Olympia, WA. What it does not tell you is that Cindy Wonderful and
Sarah Adorable are slowly but'surely taking the world by storm. These two
have songs to touch every inch of your heart and all the right places on
your body. Their debut cd, "Don't Bite Your Sister" (Tiny Sensational) and
their upcoming release "Life of a Heartbreaker" (due on Crunks Not Dead, the
record label founded by Scream Club) contain dance jams like "What the
Fucking Shit", love songs like "And You Belong" alongside feminist political
anthems such as "Don't Fuck With my Babies" plus songs about touring the
world like "International". They also feature numerous guest'stars from both
the queer community and the underground hip hop community that inspires
them. Guest'stars range from Peaches, to Mirah and Busdriver.

Spank Club (Recess & Manos)
Sometimes the best way to prepare oneself for a club attack is by taking an
offensive pre-emptive position. As a result, Recess (Shameless) and Manos
(Uniting Souls/Sub-Merge) formed Spank Club to keep everyone in check.
They will be hitting the decks before, during, and possibly after the two
headliners. http://www.simplyshameless.com

Fashion Show By hot'shit Design
Julia Whyel (hot'shit designer) wowed us with her designs at the very last
Rebar Shameless event in May 2005. Over a half of a year later, we're
excited to have another opportunity to present her work. This time around it
will be in defense of the club attack!

With your host MC Anton Bomb (Shameless). Plus others including...

Performances by PURE Cirkus
Like we don't already have enough freaks at our parties...every month we'll
have a couple of performers from the PURE Cirkus camp doing everything from
tearing up the dancefloor on stilts to an illusionist working his
magic.
http://www.purecirkus.com

Visuals by Aldorhythm
He has access to Manos' huge collections of movies. Add to the fact that a
live video feed may be on hand and you might find yourself projected over a
classic B film.

Spiritual Readings by Spookee
I don't usually get too carried away when it comes to this stuff, but
recently some of her predictions have come to life and it's kinda freaking
me out. Perhaps it's all just'some strange coincidence. Check her out at

Cold Lava Report

We haven't had a cold lava report in a while. This one came in this week and I am glad that our readers have not forgotten about this column. Please send in your reports if you liked or not liked events you went to!

Mardi Gras 2006

Don,

I cannot remember how this works... writing into you folks to
voice a criticism (a Cold Lava report).

Anyway, this is Robb from Kozy Kino, but it should be anyone. And I am here to call
FOUL (with a capital FOUL) on these so-called 'Mardi Gras'
celebrations that happen on Saturday. It follows in the same
vein as having Halloween parties on Oct. 28th. THESE ARE THE
TWO GREATEST HOLIDAYS IN THE YEAR! Perfect reasons to get
crazy and messy on weekday nights! Are Seattlelites that safe
and boring that they can only manage to party on a
weekend?

Apparently the people throwing these pre-meditated fun-a-thons are.

I don't usually get so in a dander but this stinks! If
Aerialistas and Vaudevillean Put-Ons are peoples'
ideas of fun, then I guess it's time to dress in a
tight black body suit,
and a skeleton mask, sneak into these 'parties' and try to
bump off some Eurydice look-alike hussy with some high voltage
lines.

Don Volcano’s Computer Corner.

This video has been circulating this week and you have probably received at least two emails about it. I am mentioning it here in case you haven't seen it (takes a bit to download):

If Microsoft re-designed the iPod package…

http://www.arctic.org/~patrick/misc/ms-ipod-parody.wmv

There are three sites that I can recommend if you are interesteed in finding videos like that one:

YouTube

http://www.youtube.com/

Meta Cafe

http://www.metacafe.com/

Salon's Video Dog

http://www.salon.com/ent/video_dog/

The problem with YouTube and Meta Cafe is that 98% is crap. In my opinion Salon's Video Dog filters out the crap and picks the best videos. Salon pointed me to this great Grizzly Man spoof (which you won't find on YouTube or Meta Cafe):

Grizzly Man spoof

http://anon.salon.speedera.net/anon.salon/media/video_dog/2006/january/grizzlyman2.mov

That's it for this week!
