Events for 2/18 to 2/24/2005

When I opened my inbox this morning I found that 108 new readers would like to subscribe to our list. Later on I realized that Seattle Spin was writing up a nice review:

Organization: Party Volcano, a cool text weekly email list of what's happening this weekend in Seattle. Party Volcano focuses on smaller gatherings: clubs, art shows, readings, CD release parties, dances, fashion shows, neighborhood gatherings, and such. They capture the city's most interesting events. If you think the weekend newsletters from NW Source, Seattle CitySearch, and Seattle Insider tend to be bland and heavy on safe, mainstream events, then subscribe to this list.

As mentioned before, I think Seattle Spin is doing an excellent job fining events like City Chickens 101, Bicycle Expo, and Genealogical Research Class at the Auburn Library. You should check out the rest by subscribing to their email list:

If you are one of the new subscribers, let me say: Welcome!

There is an article in the Stranger about Party Volcano that pretty much sums it up that you can read if you are interested:

ANIMATION RATION @ SIUEFF

The talented Rob Zverina writes:

you haven't seen enough...
...'til you've seen SIUEFF!

Brent Watanabe and Robert Zverina are proud to announce the formation of Seattle's least pronounceable acronym: SIUEFF. It doesn't even rhyme with "enough," but still we've chosen it to represent the first SEATTLE INTERNATIONAL UNDERGROUND EXPERIMENTAL FILM FESTIVAL.

Four nights, each weirder than the last.

Much of what will be shown relies on "audience" input. We're still seeking animation submissions for Friday Feb 18 (web downloads OK, so if you know a must-see website, shoot it our way), home movie participants for Saturday Feb 19th, and people with their own projectors for Friday Feb 25.

Tonight it is about Animation Ration:

Friday February 18 2005 8 pm - ANIMATION RATION
Animated shorts by local and international talent including The Magic Bell by Aurel Klimt (Czech Rep.), Eminem's dope Mosh video, and recent work by Brent Watanabe and Stefan Gruber.

Just check out http://www.lonelyclone.com/SIUEFF for dates and details and RSVP to robertzverina@yahoo.com

MAUREEN WHITING’s Juicy Point B @ OTB (DANCE)

Hi Party Volcano – local dance diva Maureen Whiting is presenting a new work with her Company and a team of local stars this weekend at OtB. The piece was created after a year of research in seedy motel rooms, abandoned warehouses and parking lots. Following Thursday night’s show everyone is invited to join the performers for a get together at the Mirabeau Room.

MAUREEN WHITING COMPANY
Juicy Point B

Whiting explores how audiences interact with the juicy points of their surroundings with the talents of performers Kory Perigo, Tamin Totkze, Laurentia Barbu, Julie Tobiason, Pam Tobiason, Frances Hearn, Grace Hearn, set designer Etta Lilienthal, local composers and musicians Evan Schiller, Dave Abramson, Brad Dunn, and video artist Alex Schweder.

DJ Banel @ JEM Studios

Iosis presents a night of art and progressive trance with DJ Banel from Denmark spinning Deep Tribal Progressive and Trance on Friday, February 18, 2005 at JEM Studios: 6004 12th Ave South, Seattle. Joining DJ Banel will be Osiris Indriya, BlueTech, Rezin, Waater and Lara blending West Coast and European Sounds to produce a unique dance experience. Tickets are $15 in advance at http://www.brownpaperticket.com/event

DJ Banel (Iboga Records, Denmark) aka: BEHIND BLUE EYES and FABEL, is one of the most sought after Progressive DJ's and producers in the world. As one of the founding members of the most active label in the European electronic music scene and some 57 releases Banel holds an arsenal of music that is second to none.

Osiris Indriya, (oracle gatherings - SEA) http://www.osirisindriya.com/ , is a resident DJ at Sister Faye's Divine Light Mission (107 Occidental Ave S, Seattle) and its sister club, Formosa Card Room (111 Yesler Ave, Seattle). His collection of sounds expands many genres blurring the lines between Progressive, Techno, House, Breaks and Trance with Tribal Rhythms while his original compositions mix elements of space into the places between genres. Osirisart displays aspects of the journey of the seeker finding the truth of his being. The rich and simple symbolism and the faceless human forms invite the viewer into this experience in the mediums of digital on canvas, acrylic on wood, watercolor on paper and pastels on paper.

BlueTech (native state, aleph zero - BC) has released on several European labels as well as waveform records. He melds the electronic with the organic, utilizing custom-built Reaktor instruments and software based synthesizers like Metasynth and Zeta+.

REZIN (native state, interchill, invisible - BC) aka: Naasko, taste in music and style reflect the visions and flavors of his extensive travels which include the abstract and meditative depths of ambient/shamanic soundscapes, world-influenced electronic down/dubtempo, and the groovier side of tribal psy-trance.

David Heskin - http://www.newskinstudio.com/, is a visionary artist residing in the Pacific Northwest. He draws inspiration from nature, ancient art and modern masters like Ernst Fuchs and Robert Venosa.

City Chickens 101

I have no idea where Seattle Spin find this sort of stuff:

Class: City Chickens 101, Feb 19th, 10 AM, at Bradner Gardens Park. Everything tastes like chicken, so you might as well learn to grow them yourselves. Growing chickens is kinda a hoot in itself, but certainly not without challenges (their noise, they poop alot.) Learn how to grow chickens in your postage stamp lot with minimum hassle that'll have you savoring your next BBQ. Besides, food always taste a bit better when you grow it yourself.

2005 Group Health Seattle International Bicycle Expo

Seattle Spin writes:

Expo: Seattle International Bicycle Expo, Feb 19th - 20th, $7. Celebrate all things bicycle, with presentations and over 130 exhibitors. With the nice weather coming out and the latent New Year's resolutions to lose weight, now's the time to get your bicycle out of the garage and get going again. We certainly have a lot of beautiful roads to explore in our area, so here's one way to explore our scenery.

GMP: MONSTERS OF ROCK

Hey Guerrillas!

Many of you already guessed the locale for GMP's first foray into
karaoke. There were only a few choices, and one stood out for it's
convenience and (scary) atmosphere.

We'll be kicking the night off at 9pm at the newest bar on the Pine
strip: The Bus Stop. Opened and run by GMP regulars, this
neighborhood bar will be a great spot for us to grab a cheap drink,
exercise our vocal cords, and build our numbers. It's located
conveniently on the same block as Kincora, Man Ray, Bimbo's, and The
Cha Cha at 508 E Pine Street.

Then, at 10pm, we'll all leave en masse and head down the street (~3
blocks) to The Crescent. Yes, The Crescent! Located across the
street from the Wing Dome at 1413 E Olive Way, The Crescent features
karaoke 7 nights a week and is our primary destination. It already
draws a very mixed crowd -- from drag queens to hipsters -- and
we'll add a little Monster to that mix. Competition for Karaoke
spots can be fierce, so if you're not joining us at The Bus Stop
first, try to get to The Crescent early if you want to sing.

See you Saturday Night!

Last Globalista at The Mirabeau Room

Darek writes:

I’m throwing my last Globalista on Feb. 19.

So my finale at the space is going to include all the DJ’s and musicians that were part of that particular might.

I’ll be spinning. DJ Advent, Gringo Starr
Chris Stromquist of Kultur Shock, Tom Armstrong of Quasi nada,
Deepayan Acharjia on Dhol and Tabla.
Special Guests.
VJ’s

FYI..since you love to know the details ;)
The club wants to go South Asian/Bollywoodall the time, every time. Bollywood is basically India’s version of Disco, as you know.
It’s fun as a spice, but the same sets and tunes every night is too much to deal with.
My nights and scene has always been very much Modern Global, World Genre mix, and future focused. I’m going to take a little break to regroup. Do some work and music related travel. Start at a new location in April.
I will be doing one offs throughout.
I have DJ Dalua from Bossacucanova (Rio) coming in on March 11.

In my opinion Darek has helped a great deal introducing Seattle to Middle Eastern and Asian music through his work as a DJ and host of KEXP’s radio show Wo’Pop. - He did that at least in my case. But it seems that he has also created a monster that is starting to take over the flower shop. A bar like Mirabeau Room makes money primarily by selling booze. If customers want to hear Bollywood every Saturday then Bollywood it is. I firmly believe that the balance of supply and demand will eventually regulate the whole Bollywood thing in this town. But for now it seems like demand for those kinds of events is still high. I respect DJs like Darek that are not into playing Bollywood all the time even though it makes money and I am curious to learn about the next monster that will come out of his lab!

Saturday, February 19
Mirabeau Room, 529 Queen Anne
Show will start at 9
$10

John sutton Ben Beres and Zac culler are proud to present the opening
of their newest installation, three-day weekend. The piece consists of
a 14-foot trailer home, built by the trio and held aloft ten feet above
the viewers heads. The transparent floor of the trailer allows viewers
a glimpse of the mundane performances inside; different performers will
inhabit the installation each night. The installation also features
live video monitoring and audio elements. The evening will also
include a full bar and informal slide presentation.

About the new work, the group says:

"We’ve been creating work where we build something and give it up. We
set a stage for these things to take place. When we put the people in
it, the experience of both viewer and performer mingle to create a
singular work, it is in that moment that the three of us come to
understand our own actions."

Don Volcano’s Computer Corner

At the time when I started using computers in 1983 there were only few computer magazines. I remember that one of them had a column called "Joe’s Computer Corner" or something like that, which was actually giving useful advice to people like me, who just started. Don’t worry, I won’t bore you with stories like "my first one had only 128kb of RAM – a toaster has more RAM in these days!"

Well, on the other hand you won’t get advice from me either. But instead I would like to point out some interesting links, usually about odd topics and glitches, that you have probably not heard of. I would like to kick-off this new column with one of my favorites:

How do you get from Haugesund to Trondheim in Norway?

1. Goto http://mappoint.msn.com/DirectionsFind.aspx
2. Start: Address in: Norway / city: Haugesund
3. End: Address in: Norway / city: Trondheim
4. Get directions

Or this map link should also work:
