Saturn's Sheep @ Oseao Gallery of the Senses

If it’s yellow, let it mellow:

Well folks, it's that time of year again! Let's all get together for a weekend of thick beats and close company! This year's winter soiree is in Seattle and will feature two rooms focusing on a variety of ambient and mid tempo flavors.

The main room will feature a plethora of delectable tunes laid down by some of the most competent beat masters on the west coast. Be forewarned though, these artists have been known to flirt with the tempo from time to time so you might want to come prepared to shake your ass.

On both nights, the second room will be inundated by wave upon wave of deep nocturnal rhythms. It'll be the perfect spot to escape, unplug and explore the multitude of worlds offered just beyond the limits of your eyelids.

If it’s brown flush it down:

The Legend Of Saturn's Sheep:

The traditional holiday of Saturnalia was the most popular celebration of the Roman year. It has been described as the best of days.

However, a strange group of people who used a torture device as their primary symbol, thought it immoral that everyone would allow themselves to succumb to pleasures of the flesh. In protest, this conservative sect fled to the countryside during the festivities and took with them all of the local sheep.

Not only were the sheep sorely missed by the Saturnalia participants, they were also severely mistreated. In a bizarre display of odd ritualistic behavior, the cult would mount antlers onto the sheep and force them to drag sleds loaded with pine trees, midgets and a creepy old fat man in red.

In a series of debauched clandestine operations, the revelers would attempt to free the sheep each year. This led to nearly compulsive behavior on the part of the puritans. They would stay up night after night counting and recounting their prisoners in order to make sure none of them had been set free; luckily for the sheep, the people charged with guarding them would fall asleep almost immediately.

To this day, there is still a universal connection between insomnia, Saturn and the itemization of sheep.

This year we hope to relive the fine tradition of Saturnalia. Join us as we lead the sheep back to Saturn's doorstep for a weekend long celebration in the name of warmth, light, family, friends and the liberation of sheep.

Tickets:

$10 gets you a bracelet for both nights. Tickets are available online. We'll have them in stores in Portland and Seattle soon. Be sure to get your tickets early as we will be limiting sales to 200.

LIVE @ 108

Grey writes:

Lately I've been doing a lot of live sets, usually people are dancing,
there is a generally good vibe and all that. This will be something
completely different. My goals will have nothing to do with dancing,
but everything to do with disorientation, extreme (not xtreme like
energy drinks or snowboarding, but plain old extreme) aural
manipulation -including much dialogue cutup. There will be multiple
sound sources, fed by FM transmitters, controlled by central equipment
located in a rolling shopping cart. Oddly, I've done performances like
this in other cities, but never here before.

This is the cryptic email invite for the whole event, which also
features a sound art ensemble and some visual/installation work,
official start time is 8pm:

Santarchy ( 12/11/2004)

Hey Guerrillas,

If you missed the huge spectacle that was SANTARCHY! last weekend,
or if (like many Santas) you had some black outs during the course
of the day and evening, below are links to photos.

And for those of you who DID miss it -- what a day you missed.
Santas riding the mechanical bull at Gameworks. Santas taking over
the carousel at Westlake park -- twice. Santas filling the
escalators at Pacific Place while snow fell from the ceiling.
Santas riding the roller coaster at the Seattle Center. Santas
shopping for fetish gear at the Cirque du Noc Bazaar (and getting
hot wax dripped on them). Santas pole dancing at Noc Noc. Santas
filling the booths at the Lusty Lady. Santas (quietly) invading the
library. Santas singing Xmas carols at Benaroya hall. Santas doing
Jello shots at the Center House. Santas climbing the side of the
Duck Bus.

And of course, Santas giving candy and toys out to girls and boys.

It was more Santas than we could've imagined -- estimates were in
the 200 range. And it was possibly more Santas than I want to see
for a long time (or at least until next year!)

Iron Composer: Heather Duby against COMPOSER X ( 12/16/2004)

Two days before the show I was notified that I was one of the four winners of the Three Imaginary Girls' IC Haiku Contest! All four winners were invited to come to the Iron Composer show and recite their haikus. I like the Three Imaginary Girls and felt honored for being chosen as one of the winners. I actually didn’t expect to be considered because my three haikus where too dark for a happy show like the Iron Composers.

Before the show started we were asked to come out on stage one by one and read our award winning Haikus:

Two artistic minds
Do battle for our pleasure
I came for the chicks.
by: Chris Haines

ten shots, two 'posers
'scuse me while I plug the Skyy
sing it, sexy ones!

Rachel Herbert

Wrinkles in his face
Let's iron that composer.
Give him a face lift.

UNTITLED
I. have R.eally O.nly
oN.e roC.k lover: the O.M.ni-
P.O.tent S.ingE.R.'s song!
Joe

Joe didn’t show up – probably out of fear he would have to explain his haiku. I hate performing in front of people and get rashes when I am on stage. But I made it through the whole thing without major problems.

The show itself was great. It is even funnier if you have seen the original Iron Chef shows on the food channel. As it turned out Robb Benson had cancelled his appearance and in his place, competing against the ferociously talented Sub Pop chanteuse Heather Duby was Mr. COMPOSER X.

Both composers had only one hour to compose a song. According to the rules (“rulz”) of the Iron Composer game the composers had to incorporate the “secret ingredient” into their song, which was presented in form of an absurd love scene performed by the Iron Composer staff and an audience member from the “Composer Stadium”. There were 5 rounds, in which every contestant had to take a shot of whiskey and jump through hoops. The Iron Composer staff did their best to distract the composers by interviewing them and forcing them to play silly games like Jesus-Hangman.

An hour later Duby and Composer X where presenting their songs and I have to admit I was impressed. Especially Duby’s song was surprisingly good (kind of a slow and sad waltz) and the lyrics where amazing. She must have trained a lot for this event. Clearly the 5 shots of whiskey didn’t affect her much, because she had beer on stage (after the shots) before she started to sing her song.

Unfortunately we had to leave early and I don’t know the outcome of the competition. I am pretty sure that Heather Duby won. All in all it was a wonderful evening. I am highly recommending the Iron Composer shows (which they perform once a month I think). Iron Composer is probably even more interesting for people visiting Seattle. It shows one positive side effect of living in a town where every painted flower pot is being hailed as an expression of a creative individual: it allows growth for sweet and silly shows like the Iron Composer and Kaleb’s Big Wheel Bingo with guests that are extraordinary talented as well as comfortable with making fun of themselves.

Letters to the Editor

Why do you insert your opinion here? Who cares? Just list what's happening
or remove me from your list... Don't be such a critic because critics seldom
ever attempt to do the things they criticise. And by the way, I am in no way
affiliated to any of the events you give your two cents about... I just get
tired of people dissing what other people have done... Do something
productive or supportive... Thanks for listening... I'm not trying to be an
asshole, I just had to say what was on my mind...
Happy Holidays
Rick Klu

Dear Rick,

your letter made my day. Do you know Freud’s favorite joke? – A new patient enters his office and says: "We can talk about everything except for my dear Mama." Like the patient in that joke your letter couldn’t summarize better the purpose of our weekly Party Volcano letter: This is all about inserting opinions and openly expressing concerns about the quality of events and sometimes even warning our readers about shitty art and questionable performances! That’s why you subscribed to it, didn’t you? If you are solely interested in a list of what’s happening this week why don’t you read the Stranger or the Seattle Weekly?

You correctly observe that critics seldom attempt to do the things they criticize. In my point of view that only proves consistency: Why should I try to paint flower pots that are better than the ones I am criticizing? I firmly believe are painted flower pots are not art and I should not add more of them to Seattle’s art scene! Besides I am a terrible belly dancer and I would be a miserable actor as well, because I get rashes when I am on stage (see Iron Composer Cold Lava Report above).

Your last sentence puts the icing on the cake: "I'm not trying to be an asshole, I just had to say what was on my mind".
Same here: with publishing a PV letter every week for almost three years now I'm not trying to be an asshole. I just have to say what is on my mind.
And our 1500 readers seem to like it. Wait, make that 1499.

Don Volcano
