Events for 12/26 to 12/31/2003

It shouldn't really surprise anybody: almost everything is concentrated around New Year's Eve. Gates Ballard and I thought about writing another Party Volcano Consumer Report. But we probably would have repeated our Zen of Partying as expressed in our Halloween Consumer Report:

Try to get to a private party and avoid the big commercial parties. Most importantly, don't try to find the best party and hop around. Chances are that you will spend more time in your car than with your friends.

There are not too many other things going on this week. Even The Stranger's Recommendations for this week is a list of bars where you should get drunk at. Have you noticed that is a very special Stranger. Under the cover of expressing regrets for doing or not doing certain things in 2003 you'll find pretty impressive downgrades. For example somebody (Emily?) smashed an art event in 2003. This one is a gem:

"This show stank. The art was good--a pile of chewed-up and spit-out apples, for example--but after a week or two of rotting it really, really stank. Flies held court over the installation. Everyone else held their stomachs."

Also Charles Mudede dedicated a whole page for downgrading Zac Pennington, one of their former co-workers! Why isn't every week a The Stranger Regrets Week?

The Surrealist Ball in Fremont.

Sandy writes:

The Surrealist Ball will not be the typical Seattle New Year's Eve party. Sure, we have a couple of full no-host bars to keep folks entertained, but we also offer astonishing performances by Circus Contraption (www.circuscontraption.com) - a Haute Trash Fashion Show - interactive, artist designed spaces to explore - and of course the most entertaining band and DJ you'll see this New Year's Eve: StingShark (former members of Phat Sidy Smokehouse) and DJ Shapeshifter. And we're probably the only party in town with a melting clock, complimentary champagne at midnight and a surprise treat at 2 AM. All this for only $20 advance or $25 at the door.

Truth is stranger than fiction at this year's spectacular Surrealist Ball in Fremont. You are invited to COUNT DOWN TO 2004 with hundreds of groovy folks who, like you, want to whoop it up in style. The World Famous Essential Chocolate Factory in Fremont (formerly the Redhook Brewery) has been transformed into a surrealist fantasyland. Great music, outrageous entertainment, and spectacular ambiance will make this a New Year's Eve party to remember.

StingShark, (featuring former members of Phat Sidy Smokehouse) has been called "a mutant mix of rock, reggae, and soul." Led by long-time Phat Sidy guitarist Brian 'StingShark' Ray, the group features top musicians from the Seattle club scene and a new sound that is "elevating Northwest dance floors to a frenzy." Dance Music by DJ Shapeshifter (Specialist Clan/Static Factory) keeps things hopping through the night, bending the layers of sound and space, reality and light. With a multidimensional musical _expression sure to elicit uncontrollable bouts of dancing.

Wild performances entertain guests throughout the night. The notorious Circus Contraption thrills audiences with twisted manipulations, harrowing tight rope walks, feats of masterful juggling, and swinging trapeze stunts. Their performance is a lyrical cacophony, a raucous circus cabaret. The Haute Trash fashion show promises to delight, with glamorous attire fashioned entirely from recycled materials.

Zany décor and stunning interactive spaces have been designed by Robin Worley, Lee Robinson, and Josh Brown, with visuals by VJ Pablo. Installations by visual artists Kim David Hall and Peter Toms make for a festive landscape.

The evening includes a complimentary champagne toast at midnight, a complimentary sweet treat served at 2:00 AM.

Enchanted Affair in Georgetown.

This email apologizes for creating any confusion from their previous announements. But I am more confused now. Read for yourself:

Hello all~

As you know, we are part of an event this new years called
"Enchanted Affair". It will be a night to remember, and an excellent way to ring in the new year. The flyer is out and displays the marks of several communities from Seattle and beyond. The name of "Seelie Court" was chosen to represent this event as a whole. Some of you may remember Seelie Court from legendary events from back in the day here in Seattle.

The reason this name was chosen to represent this event is that we wanted a neutral ground, where many groups can feel at home in a single gathering. This is an opportunity to cross-pollinate the greater Seattle artist community, for many of the groups to come together to just kick back and have fun. This is not an Oracle Gathering, nor a Mass:ive or Space Virgins event, however many members of those who work hard to bring those events to life are represented.

We hope you do attend, meet many other fantastic members of our individual communities, and see ourselves as part of something larger than our own creations. We apologize for any confusion, and look forward to celebrating with you, conspiring to inspire our dance into the new year.

Sincerely,
Osiris and Diem

Doug Haire @ Polestar (12/12/2003)

Pat was right when she was pointing out that the Doug Haire event had been a week earlier. C.D.O. Andrew subconsciously decided to go on a day when there wouldn't be a show. I told you he hates music shows like root canals!

Christmas Eve (12/24/2003)

When I came home from work I found a big package in front of my door. I opened it and found 12 hand made pork tamales and this note:

Merry Christmas!
Love,
Hank and Cathy.

I don't know who these nice people are. I assume they are friends of the previous owners of my house. But they can't be close friends, because they moved to Florida over two years ago.

The philosophical question that has been torturing me since is not whether it's wrong to open packages that are not addressed to me (the answer to that question would be "no"). I have been wondering: Shall I eat those tamales?

I shall add that I am a recent survivor of a hefty food poisoning. I pretty much spent last weekend between bed and bathroom. Vomiting when performed "behind your back" is an interesting experience - even though it gets old after a few hours. Once the oldest part of your brain decides to get rid of the contents of your guts it orchestrates an impressive exercise on your body. Starting from the center of your belly cascading muscle contractions wring out your guts until it's time to get more oxygen. I didn't know I was able to do that. It is like a trick performed on you.

Going back to the initial question I haven't decided yet whether I want to take the risk of having another of those Cirque de Vomit nights over the toilet bowl. On the other hand, what are the odds of Hank and Cathy sending spoiled pork tamales to their friends?

Jewsmas (12/25/2003?)

I don't even know when Jewsmas exactly is. But I do know that it is being celebrated religiously every year - somewhere here in Seattle:

In a well-meaning but misguided attempt to be "inclusive", Christian society has cast Chanukah in the role of the "Jewish Christmas". To liberate our ancient holiday from this false role, we introduce a new holiday, the true Jewish Christmas, Jewsmas. Now leave Chanukah the hell alone!

GMP #10: Sleazy Santas, Evil Elves, & Raunchy Reindeer (12/20/2003)

Hey Guerrillas!

When you introduce a camera crew and dozens of drunken santas, elves, reindeer, and snowflakes into unsuspecting bars, you should expect some chaos. But we weren't prepared for just how crazy Sleazy Santas, Evil Elves, and Raunchy Reindeer got.

It seemed as the night went on, costumes slowly peeled off. Our birthday boys, Kurt and Paul, in particular, went from fully dressed to nearly nothing in a matter of hours. This had to be the most bare-bottomed GMP ever! And it's all caught on film.

Some truly creative (and some very frightening) Holiday themed costumes were on parade Saturday nite: From lecherous Santas, to Elf ravaged drag queens, to a single, lonely shepard. Snowflakes and ice queens kept things cool, while several reindeer cast their red-nosed light over the crowd -- including one clad in rubber! The stunning Swedish Housewife arrived wearing little more than christmas lights and garlands. And representing the oft-forgotten holiday, the Hannukkah Fairy was on hand to make sure everything was Kosher.

But is an elf in a chain harness, on all fours in the middle of a pool table, union suit gaping open in the back, being poked by pool cues really Kosher? We may have to check with a Rabbi on that one -- we have a feeling the Hannukkah Fairy was a little too tipsy to make the call.

In addition to the photos captured by Dirty Bunny, we've also received gorgeous photos from the GMP documentary photographer - Bebet - and some pics from that dirty boy Stu. He seemed to capture the more, um, personal moments of the nite.

Info about the GMP Documentary will be sent out when available, and an invitation to the next GMP is forthcoming. Stay tuned!
