Events for 1/28 to 2/3/2005

This looks like a little event eruption. But as we all know quantity doesn't guarantee quality. This week's downgrades include: Romp Naked, Soil, and Vain. No upgrades, just business as usual.

Except for one show on Saturday that I couldn't find anything about. Since those are sometimes the best let me tell you what I know about it: There is an Ethiopian Restaurant on 12th and Jefferson (1209 E Jefferson?) that will host a show on Saturday, 1/29 at 8pm. The featured band or musician will play traditional Ethiopian music that refers to the slow rhythm of moving camels. There is also a special traditional dance that is being danced to that sort of music and you might be able to see people dancing it there. I know this all sounds vague. But as I said that’s where you will find the gems in this city!

Please send me a Cold Lava report if you go, because I will miss it - I will be at a wedding dinner and I doubt that they will be playing Ethiopian camel music.
(Thanks Mary for this great tip!)

Big City Dick (FILM) @ the Jewel Box Theater

Seattle Spin writes:

This film tells the life story of a Seattle icon and street musician Richard Peterson, his search for love and his dreams of success. This film is about Seattle, yet it's played just about everywhere but Seattle, so here's the chance to catch the film's first run here in town. As a bonus, you can drink inside the Jewel Box Theater as well.

Big City Dick premiere at the Jewel Box Theater, Jan 26th - 29th, $7.

Hassan Hakmoun @ Triple Door

James Whetzel writes:

Hassan Hakmoun at the Triple Door. $10? 8pm Hassan is Gnawa
musician from Morocco. He is much much much better live than on his
albums, some of which are highly booty! He has a live band and over
the course of the show tends to kick the rhythm into gear seriously.

A Toda Mujer Fundraiser @ Gallerias

Rocio runs "A Toda Mujer", a local Spanish radio show that focuses on women's issues. She writes:

Dear friends,

I am writing to let you know about a fun-fundraising event I am organizing to support the radio program “A Toda Mujer’. As you may know the program has been on the air since September 2004 on Sundays on KXPA 1540 AM every Sunday from 7 to 8 pm.

The program was created out of the frustration of the current state of affairs for women on media. In Anglo media we are just absent, but the situation is worse when we focus on Spanish media which has historically portrayed Latino women as no much more that “hot bikinis”. Generally speaking women have little opportunities to see and hear themselves as intelligent and mature on the radio waves.

With a grant from the Seattle Foundation I have been able to produce one hour show every Sunday, however funds are drying up and is time to ask those of you who believe in this kind of project to support this effort. Please note that all the money spent so far has gone to operating costs and we have been just volunteering our time.

On Friday, January 29th, at 9:00 pm, we are all going to meet and have a great time with a variety of performances: modern dance, opera, stand up comedy, “A Toda Mujer” video, pop music, etc. at GALERIAS on 611 E. Broadway, Seattle, Wa 98102.

We are asking you to donate $10.00 at the entrance. If you are unable to make it that day please see if you can make a donation by mail (checks to "A Toda Mujer", address Rocio Luquero 815 23rd Av. S. #A2 Seattle WA 98144). If you choose to be one of our V.I. P. (vaya idiota pend...) at the dinner table I'll meet you at 7:30 pm at the same place. Pleae RSVP for this. $50 per person.

In any case, thank you for your time and consideration and have a great year.

Romp Naked @ The Dance Vault & The Plush Room

Another gem presented by Seattle Spin:

Party: Romp Naked, Jan 29th, $15+. For men only, explore the male form through nude dance and music. OK, get this straight - this isn't a sex party, nor is it about sex. Rather, this is a gathering of men to honor the male form through shared energy and experience. It is about sensuality and erotica, but not about sex.

This has to be real. You can’t make this shit up:

The 1st Romp Naked of 2005

Our Music Maestros: dj smiller and [a surprize!]

Drunk Puppet Nite #5 (Last show) @ Re-bar

Don't miss your chance to see it! Show must end this Saturday!

Monkey Wrench Puppet Lab presents _Drunk Puppet Nite #5!_

Ladies and gentlemen, it's the 5th Drunk Puppet Nite!

Once again, Monkey Wrench Puppet Lab is hosting Drunk Puppet Nite at
Seattle's Re-Bar. Drunk Puppet Nite is an evening of puppetry from
beyond the pale; a chance for Seattle’s best, and most notorious,
puppeteers to expose their ids in public. We dare to enter the nether
realms of puppetry. Drunk Puppet Nite is subversive; it’s ugly, it’s
ridiculous, it’s sublime, it’s controversial, it’s lovely, it’s
righteously political, it’s literary.

The truth is, no one knows what to expect from Drunk Puppet Nite. Over
these three weekends, our puppeteers have no boundaries. Performers
include Clay Martin; Matt Fontaine & Tamara Paris; Andrew Kim; members
of Circus Contraption, Cry of the Rooster, Islewilde, Tango Twins, Tears
of Joy; Thistle Theater and all of your Monkey Wrench favorites! No two
evenings are the same.

Monkey Wrench is a cluster of Seattle area puppeteers who are working to
expand the public’s definition of puppetry by bringing their blend of
the surprising, the bizarre and the artistically excellent to audiences
around the Puget Sound. Monkey Wrench is the group responsible for
Frankenocchio, The Mermaid who Broke my F*cking Heart, Halfpenny Opera
and the upcoming Dracula.

At Re-Bar
1114 Howell St. at Boren Ave., Seattle

Thursday, Friday & Saturday.
January 27-29.

Show at 8:00 SHARP; Door open at 7:00
21 and over only w/ID

3rd annual Massive drag ball @ Sister Faye's Divine Light Mission

David Peterman (http://www.BurningManSeattle.com) writes:

Hey folks, Well, we're in that part of the year when there really aren't that many
burner events happening, which means it's dangerously easy to get
distracted with other responsibilities like jobs and taking out the
garbage. To help keep you at least partially occupied, diem has asked me
to pass along plugs for a couple of upcoming events.

But first, a reminder to everyone that Burn nights are still going
strong every Monday at the Lower Level (1621 12th Ave). People start
arriving by 8:30 or so, and there's always a crowd worth mingling with.

Here is one of the events:

Jan. 29th, 2004
First up this Saturday night is the third annual Massive drag ball.
adam
vs. eve: a massive drag ball

A Massive production in its third year, featuring the heavenly sounds
of

Marmalade
DJ Tumbleweed
DJ Kirby
DJ Robin Scott

We're taking the Drag Ball back to the origins of battle of the sexes:
adam vs. eve. And what better place to drag it out than Sister Faye's
Divine Light Mission as it opens it doors for the first time! Three
sinister DJ's in the pulpit encouraging temptation and Marmalade mixing
it up on the scene. Hold onto your fig leaves, darlings!

9:00 PM to 4:00 AM

Nordic Soul / Noah Pred (Techno) @ Skid Road

DJ Nordic Soul writes:

I'll be spinning some Techno along side Noah Pred from Vancouver (see bio
below, sounds like a badass). Brandy and Osiris will be spinning in the side
room.

If you haven't heard about Skid Road, it's a beautiful new club that opened
up where the Bohemian used to be (you won't recognize the place, trust me).
Great atmosphere and sound. This place is going to be hoppin' once word gets
out. It's also free before 10 if you're broke. Come check it:

>>>Noah Pred Bio:
Hailing from Canada's Sunshine Coast, Noah Pred emerged from Vancouver's
underground as a sought-after techno DJ with a sophisticated sound and
unique style. Producing dance music and performing live for over seven
years, he recently completed a three-year residency in Montreal. Devoted
to authentic and soulful strains of techno in all its permutations, Noah's
sound continues to evolve while remaining firmly driven by the
dancefloor.

Since his first records came out in the late nineties, his productions have
received international support, appearing on charts from renowned talent
such as Carl Cox, Cari Lekebusch, and Laurent Garnier. His subsequent
12-inch EPs and remixes have continued to garner critical acclaim while
moving dancefloors across the globe, appearing on playlists from Tokyo to
Glasgow.

Paintings by Chad Thoma @ Retail Therapy

Wazhma writes:

Please join us for the art opening of painter and fashion designer, Chad Thoma. Chad will be showing old and new pieces. "I express mood through murkiness with shots of vivid color or other elements. I don't really like to explain too much because I want each person to take away from a piece how they interpret it, not what I was thinking when I painted it, or why I shot screws through it. Art is a subjective animal in an object world. Art is a monkey or a chicken, or whatever anyone wants it to be. Who am I to say?"

As always, you are welcome to bring any friends. Wine and snacks will be provided.

Blow Up The Spot @ Vain

I would skip this one. It just sounds horrible: break dancing paintings, Coca Cola, Nike, hip hop, graffiti, skateboard relief. Next!

VAIN Salon and Cut Kulture United are pleased to present “Blow Up The
Spot”
, a group Exhibition of 6 emerging artists, the first of several collaborative arts events curated by Damion Hayes of Cut kulture United at VAIN. “Blow Up The Spot” is a vibrant look at Seattles contemporary urban arts scene featuring works by Nhon Nguyen, George Estrada, Vittorio Costarelli, Zeta Brown, Drewad, and Victor Pantet.

These artists all create adventurous work that breaks through cultural and stylistic boundaries with a respect for style in art, dance, and fashion. Nhon Nguyens dynamic Paintings of break dancers are reminiscent of the masterful strokes of Sumi, beautiful economy of brush strokes and use of color washes. George Estrada and Vittorio Costarelli are internationally known graphic designers, having done work for Coca Cola, Nike, Addidas, and Nestle, who are renowned for blending mid Twentieth century commercial art techniques with cross cultural aesthetics to create cut vinyl masterpieces.

With a nod to his Latin American heritage Zeta Brown creates assemblages
that explore the evolution of traditional latin dance styles into current
hip hop dances like Uprock/Downrock. Swiss born artist Victor Pantet
explores the curious rhythms of the seasons and their effects on city of
Seattle. Japanese Kaiju, 80’s skateboard icons, and graffiti writing
inspires Seattle sculptor Dave Ho to create 3 dimensional wall relief’s made
from used skateboard fragments and other found materials.

John Jasperse (Dance) @ On the Boards

Sara writes:

Dear Party Volcano, This is a dance show not to be missed. If you already know John Jasperse’s work, you will know why we say this. . . if not, come check it out.

More details:

New York choreographer John Jasperse will come to On the Boards Thurs Feb. 3-Sun Feb. 6 for his debut Seattle performance. For the show, the OtB Mainstage will be transformed with viewers sitting among a dozen raised platforms where the dancers will perform. Jasperse is one of the world’s most respected contemporary modern dance choreographers and the show at OtB will offer the chance to see his work in an unconventional and intimate setting.

"There are other experimental choreographers from his generation... who have won prestigious European awards, taken over the stage at BAM or created work for Baryshnikov's... White Oak Dance Project. No one else, however, has done all of these things." (New York Press)
