Access or Excess @ SAM Rental/Sales Gallery.

Thursday August 22nd is the opening reception of Fictions at the SAM Rental/Sales Gallery, and also Sarah Morris’s installation Access or Excess in their 1st Avenue Window. The opening is an early one, from 5-7pm. The gallery is located at 1334 1st Ave, suite 140 (one door north of the Art Museum on 1st Avenue).
Sarah writes:

This is an installation made of almost 100 shopping bags I collected from downtown stores these past months. A celebration of merchandising or a mockery of consumerism? You decide. Here is a link to my spot on their site: http://seattleartmuseum.org/visit/exhibitDetailRSG.asp?eventID=3260

Go and check out Sarah’s latest “obsessive sewing installation”. She sewed a bunch of plastic bags of different sizes and colors together, forming flexible tubes like bodies of caterpillars. Those tubes are now hanging from the ceiling of the 1st Avenue Window and meander through the room. Some of those tubes find their way to the window, where they would offer hectic consumers and curious tourists on First Avenue a glimpse of their own inside world – empty shopping bags.

Seattle Art Museum Rental/Sales Gallery’s Window, 1334 First Ave. 5-7pm. “Access or Excess” is up from 7/29 to 9/29.

Meme Concert Series @ CoCA.

In the last week's edition of PV, we incorrectly published that Wally Shoup was playing at CoCA on Thurs 8/15. He actually played last month.

We apologize. Our Brazilian Fact Checker, Gisele, got the date wrong.
Gisele explains:

I so sorry to our readers. I so busy with fashion shows, sometimes I get fact checker help from my boyfriend, Leo--oh, he so rich and famous. Oh, and he so sexy and romantic, too.

Anyhow, last Thursday, I call Leo from backstage at Chanel runway show in Paris, because Leo going to help me with fact checking dates. I thought Leo say to me, "Hon, today, I go hear the hip Wally Shoup." But, you know, it difficult to hear him because it so noisy backstage. Leo really say, "Hon, today, I took a big, smelly poop."

This week we better let CoCA speak for themselves:

Acclaimed jazz violinist Michael White - who has jammed with the likes of Pharoah Sanders, John Handy, John Coltrane and Stevie Wonder, to name a few - is just one of the exceptional talents curator Sam Mickens has slated for his two upcoming live music and dance programs, dubbed the Meme Concert Series.

The Meme Concert Series features a mixture of experimental sounds and improvisational acts, idiomatic fringe rock/punk bands, and to round out the evening, dance/performance elements. According to Mickens, "Memes are 'replicators' that compete to get themselves copied into as many minds as possible..."

CoCA, 1420 11th Ave (between Pike and Union on Capitol Hill), 9pm.

Wine, Women & Chocolate @ Jewel Box (Rendez Vous).

I don’t know much about this event except for it’s with Loa Allebach, j.r., and Mia Boyle. It might be related to full moon tonight.

Rendezvous Jewel Box Theater (2320 2nd Ave.), 10:30pm, costs?

Friday, 8/23.

New Poverty @ Pound Gallery.

Not that you would have a lot of choices this Friday. But this event is highly recommended, you should go! Curator Jeff Miller writes:

Good news: here's an event with very few dirty hippies. A few selections from the press release are attached. Big attraction: actual Canadians will be in attendance! Reserve your spot now.
Opening starts at 7pm on Friday, runs til whenever. As usual, there will be drinks and snacks, and a scintillating crowd. I'm biased, but I think the art we've put together is pretty cool, and "New Poverty" is definitely a theme for the times.

"The New Poverty" is an exhibit of eight artists from Seattle, WA and Victoria, BC who use simple, cheap consumer materials to make work with a complex and sophisticated aesthetic. The artists included in "The New Poverty" work with media as diverse as balloons, contact paper, mailing envelopes, and discarded auto glass. Although the intentions and themes in these works are varied and complex, they emerge from humble materials. The show suggests that the office-supply warehouse and the junkyard are quarries from which art materials will be extracted in the twenty-first century--and that the distance between the two is ever-shrinking. Although intrinsically critical, these works identify with thhe pleasures of consumer culture, and imply a kind of pathos or even mourning for its possible decline.

Exhibiting artists are: Erin Fraser, Jenny Heishman, Brad Miller, Sarah Morris, Dan Painchaud, Ingrid Percy, and Stephen Rayner. The New Poverty showed previously at the Ministry of Casual Living gallery in Victoria, from 6 June through 20 June. This time Sarah throws in a new “obsessive sewing” piece that was not even shown at the first show in Victoria. As far as I understood she sewed a scarf using tapes as threads.

Car Free Steattle in Seattle.

Rob Zverina (editable art @ V5) is reminding us of Car Free Seattle on Saturday. There will be various events at different places:

COLUMBIA CITY - Rainier Valley Heritage Days Parade
10 am - noon, 3709 S. Ferdinand St (Bikeworks Bike Shop)

CAPITOL HILL - 14th Ave [Sidewalk] Chalk Art Festival
11 am - 4 pm, 14th Ave. b/t Pike & Pine (Globe Cafe)

FREMONT - New Belgium Brewing Co. Tour de Fat
11 am - 6 pm, Canal St. b/t 1st & Phinney (FUNC)
followed by Fremont Outdoor Cinema special midnight showing of BREAKING AWAY

To get there by bus, visit http://transit.metrokc.gov.

A leisurely bike ride will connect the above events. It leaves from Bikeworks Bike Shop at noon and ends in Fremont around 4 pm, with a two-hour fun stop on Capitol Hill. Art bikes and costumes are encouraged, but not necessary.

What is an art bike? It's a bike with attitude. What's the message you want to send the world? Let your bicycle and/or outfit reflect this. Put a banner on your bike, wear a hi-visibility hat, decorate your helmet--it doesn't take much to let your creativity shine through. If you don't have a costume or decorated bike, don't worry about it, this ride is open to anyone who enjoys pedaling (or skating) slowly through the city. Put on your Saturday best and join us for a summer day you'll never forget.

Car Free Seattle, 10am - 2am in various locations around the city.

Slender Means Society @ SAW.

One day I will actually go and check out an SMS event just to see whether I am right with my theory that Slender Means Society is a bunch of young, talented weirdos. Here is what they have to say:

SLENDER MEANS SOCIETY SEEKS TO "SILENCE THE CONTEMPTUAL MASSES IN A SWEEPING BLOW" SAY DIRECTORS.

This month, the Society continues its collaboration with Secluded Alley Works, in the furthering of their monthly series of experimental performances to be held at the Secluded Alley Works’ Factory of Creative Output. These performances, as proposed by the Society, will be evening-long events involving a variety of seemingly disparate media unified exclusively under evolving monthly themes placed to inspire unique artistic output by a diverse line-up of ever-changing participants.

The Slender Means Society, in association with Secluded Alley Works, proudly presents the sixth theme in the series:

Never Say Nothing. And Never Say No. An Evening of Words and Music.

In their most promising event to date, the Society has comprised an exciting collection of participants exploring literary and musical worlds in their varied forms.

Secluded Alley Works, 113 12th Ave (cross street is Yesler), 4-10pm, $6.

Ayesha's Pre-Birthday Celebration @ La Spiga.

Party Volcano made sure it would be okay sending out Ayesha’s invitation to her Pre-Birthday Party at La Spiga. She mumbled something like: “Yeah, sure. Who reads your long emails anyway?”. Later she added:

Well.. it's more than a birthday party. It's just another reason to drink and party. The restaurant will be ours after 10-11pm and will stay open past 2pm into the wee hours. There will hopefully be a dj spinning also. If you know of someone that wants to spin, let me know. It'll be a fun party.

I don’t have any doubts that this will be a fun party. In case you get hungry, try La Spiga’s food. It’s great! I don’t know what they put into their yummy food but the last time I was there my friend and I were talking about oral sex for an hour.
La Spiga - 1401 Broadway (in the QFC block), free.

Cold Lava.

Mystery Art in the Central District (8/20).

The monolith-esque coverage is starting to gain steam on the top-secret-anonymous artists whose installation is featured in the below article. After KOMO did a story, ABC News picked it up nationally (early a.m., though). I went to the coffee shop this morning and one of the owners said the Times had just been there asking questions. But, in mid-interview, the P-I called. The Times reporter snarled, "Oh great. Now it's just a big clusterfuck," and stormed out of the shop.

“I will kick your ass” Auction on eBay (6 days left).

You better place your bid soon. This eBay auction is expiring in six days. The price is currently at $1.75, which is cheap considering the service that you will receive from Mr. “Brak”:

Upon my arrival, I will select a random time to come over and kick your ass. It may be when you are sleeping, or showering, or any other time during the day/night when you are most vulnerable. During this beating I may damage one or more of your household items, if I have to break glass to get into your home or knock over furniture if you attempt to run from me. This should be expected by you, and covered in my expenses. If you are married or have children, I may choose to slap around your family a little bit, but only if I'm feeling particularly generous. They should be informed of this, and expect it as well.

Party Volcano is recommending Cabela’s Camo Fleece for your children in case Mr. “Brak” is swinging by and is feeling unusually generous…
