Events 3/7 - 3/9/2002

Thursday, 3/7.

Tomiko Jones: Infused. You don't want to miss this opening. Her photos are amazing. She had an opening in Olympia last month. This time she is showing newer, "rich, saturated photographs of empty places" (The Stranger). Christine Taylor points out, "Tomiko is most recently known for her prolific show which premiered last year, called 'The Bunny Chronicles'. A traveling exhibition featuring large format B&W images telling a visual story of personal triumph. This month The Green Room presents a new vision from Tomiko, and a rare glimpse of photographs that passionately speak from the soul; a luscious view into places from afar." She will have small prints available for CHEAP that night only. Don't be thwarted by the throngs of kids milling about outside, there's an all ages Modest Mouse show at the Showbox. If you miss the opening, infused runs throu! gh May 4th. The Green Room has a nice happy hour daily 5-8pm as a bonus incentive to viewing art.
The Green Room, 1424 First Ave, 7-10 pm. Free. http://www.tomikojonesphoto.com

Shrinky-Dink Auction. This seems to be an annual event. If I remember correctly the last auction was held on the day the Shoe Building closed. It was packed and I was surprised how many Shrinky-Dinks found a new home that evening. If you are doing the monthly Art Walk thing you should definitely stop by and bid! Note that the proceeds of the silent auction benefit the Langston Hughes Center.
Zeitgeist, 171 S Jackson St, close to Occidental Square, 6-8 pm. Free. http://seattle.citysearch.com/profile/10776858

Triangle Birthday Party. Fremont's Triangle is turning 10 and to help make it special, they are bringing in some DJs. Ian Priestley, Ramiro and Chris Field will be supplying the beats along with a few other surprises. They also have great food. My favorite is their goat cheese salad. For some bizarre reasons they don't want to serve it between 2 and 5pm.
Triangle Lounge, 3507 Fremont Place, 8p-2a. Free. http://seattle.citysearch.com/profile/10774446

Friday, 3/8.

Freezer Burn for FuNC. "This collaborative multimedia event will feature musical performances by Seattle locals Ota Prota, Miss Kick, DJ Vital, DJ Advent and a debut performance by vocalist Kim Rutledge. Pyrosutra, an 'erotic family with a penchant for fire' and Tamara the Trapeze Lady will further energize the evening." I am skeptical. The part with Pyrosutra and the trapeze lady sounds really lame to me and not worth ten bucks. Notice that they will perform the next day at Black and Raw (see below). As mentioned in previous Party Volcano emails I haven't had luck with FuNC parties. Their Halloween party was fantastic but their party on 2/1 was a disaster. Any volunteers? I won't go without an onsite report from a party scout!
Fremont UNconventional Centre, 160 N. Canal Street (Across from the Red Hook Brewery), 9pm-2am.$10. http://www.seattlefunc.org

Saturday, 3/9.

Open House Weekend at Bemis Building. The Bemis Building is having another open house on Saturday and Sunday. The building itself is reason enough for going. It is a converted warehouse with spacious studios and high ceilings. Some of the large windows have views of Downtown Seattle and Safeco Field. Of course you'll be able to see a lot of art. The Bemis Building is the home of 36 photographers, metalworkers, painters, ceramics, and glass artists. Last time I went I liked those fascinating metal machines by one of the artists.
Bemis Building, down by the Viaduct on 55 S. Atlantic Street, one block west of Safec! o Field., 2-9pm. Free. http://www.drizzle.com/~eyespy/artdetour/buildings/bemis.html

Art Salon. There is going to be an Art Salon in Beth Hayes's house for one night. Each room in her house will feature a different artist and in her two car garage (transformed into 'the warehouse') will be poets, musicians, etc. I would give it a try.
Art Salon, 745 N 70th, 7-9pm. Free. http://www.king-salmon.com/art

Coca Presents: Black and Raw. This is a benefit party for CoCA. You need ten bucks to get in but it will help CoCA. The event will be at Big Building, which is located in that industrial strip parallel to the bridge that connects West Seattle with the I-5. It is another interesting place like the Bemis Building. DJs will be Riz Rollins (KEXP's Expansions) and Miss Mick. This sounds really like a fun event even with that erotic family with a penchant for fire and that trapeze lady (yes, they will perform again). It looks like there will be two parts: Reception for the blacksmiths and metal workers 7-9pm and tour of their building. Afterwards the party starts swinging. There will be performances by the likes of the Degenerate Art Ensemble, the Gothic Cheerleaders, the Dead Baby Bike Club, and others. Plus an art raffle! The invite says, "Dress warm and d! on't park on the train tracks". I went to a party at the Big Building in December last year and it was really cold. The halls are huge and there are only two forges. You will find yourself oscillating between too hot and too cold. The only compromise seemed their hot tub.
Big Building, 3600 E Marginal Way S, 7pm-1am. $10. http://www.cocaseattle.org/BlackAndRaw.htm

IHOL: Party Like It's 1999. The famous International House of Love (IHOL) is having another party. Even though it sounds like a theme party, they explicitly ask people not to come dressed as the artist formerly known as The Artist Formerly Known As Prince. Instead they want to provide a chance to let loose and have fun the way you used to, last century. And the best part is, you can come in costume without even changing your clothes. I admire those guys. They are still having parties even after a laptop got stolen last time.
IHOL, 611 13th Ave E, starts at 9pm. Bring booze. http://www.evite.com/r?iid=AYTBWMGBULIETSMPTTZB&li=iq
