Events 4/18 - 4/20/2002

Thursday, 4/18.

NICOLA VRUWINK. This opening is also recommended by The Stranger. I have heard it will be an interesting show. Emily Hall writes: “In Overcoming the Spins, with sculptures fashioned and installed to recall the effects of a disco ball, artist Nicola Vruwink looks at old-fashioned social interaction in the age of isolation. It's not a discotheque like anyone remembers a discotheque--no lights, no music, no damn disco ball--but a series of works in an empty room, sad and regretful like a party the day afteeer. This is escapism without any escape, the accessories of fun without fun itself. But Vruwink's work always saves itself through wit and the artist's precise methodology; like an anthropologist of the future, she remembers the things we've already forgotten.”
James Harris Gallery, 309A Third Ave S (in downtown right next to the building where the Nexus parties take place.) Opening reception tonight from 5:30-7:30 pm. Free.

Friday, 4/19:

Photographs by Steven Stone. I have seen one of Steven's photos at Vital 5's Overdrawn auction and I liked it. But what I liked even more was his honesty. He said: “I would take the other one!” Steven (who has also been sending us nice pictures from FuNC parties) is having a photography opening from 7-9 PM at his friend's Pilates Studio in Fremont. The space is called Bodycenter but the space is slightly tricky to find: “There are two ways to get there. You can enter in from the front of the building across from the Triangle and follow the signs. Alternatively, you can walk down the stairs by the Starbucks on Fremont Ave next to the construction site. There is a gated entrance to a small courtyard about midway along the path. You'll see stairs and a sign for Bodycenter in the courtyard.” I hope we won't get lost.
Bodycenter. 619 N 35th St. Suite #102, 7-9 PM. Free.

ELEMENTS (benefit @FuNC). What would be a Friday without a FuNC benefit event featuring fire performances and masturbating clowns? This time it's the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians that is inviting the Party Volcano to an evening with Digital Space Monkeys, Pyrosutra, Cyberchix, and some unknown DJs. I had to laugh when I was reading this announcement for a performing artist called Hip Hop Ziker: “Sufi chanting with musical accompaniment including beat boxing and violin.” I was willing to give up my low FuNC diet thanks to new evidence provided by Steven Stone's photos from previous FuNC parties. But I am afraid my stomach won't be able to handle this one. I’ll pass.

This might be a perfect moment for explaining Party Volcano's rating system. Last week we heard back from an angry J-Justice, who was not happy with our story about Nation from two weeks ago (New York style versus Seattle style). He found our comment harsh while he was only trying to promote a fun event with good music and good people and “not something that is simply a bad venue with a chance to get in for free”. Just for the records: that was a friendly review (and so is the FuNC review above). A harsh comment would have been more like this: “Avoid that sub_sonic and J-Justice show at Nations. They are just a bunch of whiny Tamale Wrappers from the Northwest! Take your grandma out for dinner instead or sort your stamp collection. That's more fun.” Fortunately we were able to settle the case. We are looking forward to receiving more J-Justice announcements – for us to poop on!
Fremont UNconventional Centre, 160 N. Canal Street (Across from the Red Hook Brewery), 9pm-2am.

Saturday, 4/20.

Shakespeare In The Park: The Taming Of The Shrew. Take a break from the usual ‘activities' at Volunteer Park and watch a good Shakespeare play directed by Carrie Nath. The Cornish Theater Department continues its longstanding tradition of presenting a free outdoor production of one of the works of Shakespeare at Volunteer Park. I have to admit that Shakespeare plays exhaust me. Unfamiliar with ancient English's grammar and terms I usually spend fifteen minutes trying to decipher what the play is about before I give up and start daydreaming of beaches and other ‘activities'.
Volunteer Park on Capitol Hill. 3:30pm. Free. Shows on 4/20, 4/21, 4/26, 4/27, 4/28.

Slender Means Society @ SAW. I read the article in the Stranger but I am still not sure what SMS is about. This show seems to be about “wonders of children's television”. Let's give these kids a chance!

That's it!

It looks like there is not much happening this weekend. But the best suggestions for parties and other events usually come in last minute. Like last week's fake funeral of George Graham. He is moving to New York. But before he is starting his new life in a real city he needed to end his old. His farewell funeral was led by Pastor Caleb, who mentioned to Party Volcano that he is working on a new CD for car drivers called "You listen, I drive". It will contain songs and popular Caleb sermons. Pastor Caleb was giving a moving speech. He was truly putting the 'fun' back into funeral! And so were George's friends, who took the opportunity to speak the last of their mind straight into the placid waxen face of the beloved. One of them was still shaken from the tragedy but finally able to express her grief. She said: "George was a cruel bastard. A silly fuck if you will." Others were making references to George's obsession for cross-dressing in public. One gentleman was sharing with us how he met George the first time: "George was wearing a white bikini. A part of me wanted to fuck him. Some parts of me still want to fuck him.” I also remember a Mexican wrestler and somebody spilling coffee on George. It was an unforgettable event!

So hang in there. Maybe we'll get more ideas in the next days!
