Events for Wed 4/24 to Sun 4/28/2002

Wednesday, 4/24.

Nico Gallery Closing Night. Meghan Trainor is pointing out that Christian French is hosting a closing night for the ‘Instant Exhibition’ show at the former Nico Gallery space. The Nico Gallery has been showing work from Meghan, Tomiko Jones, Sarah Morris, and many other talented local artists. You probably went to the opening night on 4/4. It was packed. The only disappointment was an empty snack bar and cocktails for $6. But the art was great. Much better than the earwax sculptures on the fourth floor!

Nico Gallery, 619 Western Ave, 2nd floor. 6-9 pm. Free.

Thursday, 4/25.

UFO AU GOGO @ Sit and Spin. DJ Superjew is recommending this event. She writes: "sixties mod night with gogo dancers, Small Faces cover band, visuals, DJs, fun people....my friend DJ Chris Porter is putting this on, he's a great guy". It does sound like a lot of fun.

Sit and Spin, 2219 4th Ave, 9pm. $6. http://www.sitandspin.net/live.asp

The Fashion Underground @Catwalk. The press release says: "Featuring twelve up-and-coming local designers, The Fashion Underground will bring to the Seattle community a theatrical presentation of avant-garde fashion showing the transformation from darkness to light, from winter to spring. This is not just a fashion show. The models will do more than just walk down the runway. This will be an opportunity to present clothing in a new and creative way through theatrical performance, imaginative clothing, extreme hair and make-up, and original visuals and music." Two of the 12 designers are also Party Volcano enthusiasts: I-Ching will show "paper arts cross-breed with garment construction as Spring awakens flora and fauna." Handsome Tyrone will teach you that "a revolutionary is a product of evolution MAN 2020".

Party Volcano has no doubt that this will be an interesting show. You should go! Let me take the opportunity and comment on two stereotypes regarding fashion models. One says you can’t have interesting conversations with them. The other one claims they don’t have worms. Both statements are unfounded and vast generalizations. For example a month ago I went to the opening at MAR-LAC Building (see Party Volcano email from 3/14/02) and had a very interesting conversation with a woman, who occasionally models. She was openly sharing her problems with worms living in her belly. She got them in Guatemala and is now trying to get rid of them. She said: "You don’t want to let them move into your heart and brain". There are two therapies. One of them seems to be a pretty brutal chemotherapy, which would require you to stay at a hospital for some weeks. She chose the other milder therapy. There are so many interesting things to learn about worms living in human bodies. Hence my disappointment when she suddenly left with her friends. Later that night we all went to a birthday party at the Bemis Building. While we were eating hot dogs a semi-professional party clown put his face into our conversation and forced us to watch him juggling his balls – you know how clowns are. But I was not really watching. All I could think of was worms. Did you know that at night, the worms actually come out of her body and load up on fresh oxygen for the next day?

Catwalk. 172 S. Washington. Doors open at 8pm, show starts at 9pm, worms come out at 11pm. $12 at the door. Or $10 in advance (see link for purchase locations).

Friday, 4/26.

Flying Pickle Circus @ FuNC A Fund Raiser for the Stronghold Collective, Tyger Tyger,
and the Patrick Jones Legal Defense Fund. Here’s what the promoters say:

"Come one come all to see the magic, the mystery of our flaming midway of excitement! Including a diverse range of acts and entertainment: Patrick Jones, fiery staff spinner and human pin-cushion; the sexy, exquisite costumes and performance of Ignis Devoco Industrial Fire Circus; live music from Uncle Leuschner and the Chris Complex; the pumpin' sounds of DJ Jacob London and DJ Pilgrim; body painting with Steven Bradford - prepared to get nekkid and colored; clowns and dwarves; a midway featuring the Cock Ring Toss, Sean Lamont's Light Harp, and other art installations; still life studio - get ready to sketch; and a photo booth so you can memorialize your awesome costume/body paint job!"

Yawn. Party Volcano continues its low FuNC diet, but we include this because there is nothing else happening on Friday. Who knows? Maybe it will be good. But, then again, maybe you should stay home and rest up for Saturday (it’s a veritable explosion of events tomorrow.)

$10

160 N. Canal St
Come in Costume

SIFF Volunteer Meeting. Gopi is reminding the Party Volcano that the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF) is holding its annual volunteer orientation meeting on Saturday. He writes: "If you love movies here's your chance to volunteer for SIFF and watch a ton of great movies at the same time. I did this last year and got to go to the Closing Night Gala party. Also watched 1/2 dozen movies. It's fun and it's free. I am going to volunteer this year."

It is an embassy for the creative spirit, which opens its doors to individuals in related industries and brings friends together to celebrate an exclusive viewing of present works by talented local artists and professionals.

DJ Cheb i Sabbah @Chop Suey. I missed Cheb i Sabbah when he was spinning at the Baltic Room in December. I have heard good things about him and if you haven’t been to Chop Suey yet (it used to be the Breakroom) you should definitely go.

Chop Suey. 1325 East Madison, doors: 9:00PM, $12 at the door.

Opening will be Peter Madril (Neverstop). http://www.chebisabbah.com/

Fourth Annual Wig & Skirt Throwdown I woke up with a horrible hangover after Russ’ absinthe party and discovered the following note in my pocket:

"Fourth Annual Wig & Skirt Throwdown Sat April 27
4 DJ Action! Helium Karoke!
You MUST wear both a wig and a skirt to gain admission!"

Dancing, helium and cross-dressing? It doesn’t get any better than this. PV is so there!

Location: 8609 Linden Ave N. Remember: You MUST wear both a wig and a skirt.

Underground-ish Electronic Dance Music Event (Continuing into AFTERHOURS!) @SODO locale. This is sort of an underground electronic music event in a cool loft space. Lots of DJs will be playing including Woody McBride from Minnesota (okay, okay--PV realizes that the mid-west and electronic dance music don’t seem like the hippest mix, but Woody is Old School and actuallly really fucking good). Also spinning will be Captain ChiliPimp (Party Volcano has no idea who this character is, but given that PV recently returned from Thailand, land of extremely spicy food and a booming sex trade, PV loves his moniker.) PV thinks this will be a good afterhours event.

Suggested Donation: $10 to $15

This should start in the late evening and go on until the break of dawn.

Location:
33 S. Hanford St
(Loft space above Seattle Pottery Supply)
Directions:
From Downtown Seattle, go South on First Ave
Go PAST Home Depot.
At next light, take a RIGHT onto Hanford Street.
Go over the train tracks and you will see Seattle Pottery Supply on your left.
Loft is above Seattle Pottery Supply.
Note: this is NOT Herban Pottery on First Ave, but is not too far from it.

Sunday, 4/28.

Seattle Jewish Film Festival 2002. Last week we missed mentioning the Seattle Jewish Film Festival 2002.

It will end on Sunday with a scary Fiddler on the Roof Sing-along. The organizers of the SJFF ask everybody to leave their weapons at home. They are not permitted during the sing-along.

All screenings at Cinerama, located at 4th and Blanchard in downtown Seattle.
