Events 4/4 - 4/6/2002

In case you missed Russel's office party. It was great. I had a great time: an absinthe dispenser, brownies, a gentleman from Turkey, and an ambulance. After all I am glad I didn't get the job!

Thursday, 4/4.

Art Walk: Sean Vale. Sean Vale, a painter, is having an opening at this new place that used to be Mary Vitold Gallery. Now it's something in between a co-op space and a commercial gallery.
Gallery 110, 110 S. Washington. Opening April 4th 6 - 8pm, free.

Art Walk: 619 Western Ave. This building next to Esther Claypool Gallery reminds me on the old Shoe Building on Occidental Square that they closed two years ago before they turned the studios into condos. The Nico Gallery on the 2nd floor is apparently in transition and offers its space for a last minute ‘instant exhibition'. If you are an artist and you would like to contribute it's not too late. You can drop off your work Wednesday evening between 6 and 9pm, or you can show up Thursday between 3 and 7pm. It only has to be new art. Meghan Trainor let us know that she will contribute new pieces to the show. I am also curious about Sarah Morris's unemployment envelopes. On the 4th floor 4 Girls Studio will have an opening called "me + the camera". Tomiko Jones told us that she would have some pictures from a new series up this month at that show and I can't wait to see them.
Notice that 619 Western will still be open while the main stream business on Occidental Square shuts down at 8pm.
619 Western Ave. Opening 6pm-10pm. Free.

Friday, 4/5.

GENE(SIS) Contemporary Art Explores Human Genomics. The Henry Art Gallery is having a big opening reception. "Gene(sis) interweaves humorous commentary, theatrical installations, documentary images, pseudo-scientific and actual laboratory situations to explore the potential impact of the Human Genome Project on our daily lives." If you check out their web site at www.gene-sis.net you will notice that Susan Robb (Party Volcano's own flesh and blood!) is once again part of an exhibition at Henry. There is also another exhibition on the top floor at the entrance level called Short Stories I can recommend. Susan's Seedling (which I think is amazing) will only be shown until 5/12. Besides exceptional Gene(sis) art you will also see special Motown/techno performance by "audio scientist" Justin Boyd and Dario Robeleto, and you'll enjoy the best art opening hors d'oeuvres in town. Only Photo Center North West comes close to Henry's five star snacks.
Henry Art Gallery, 15th Ave NE & NE 41st St. Free for Henry members/$6 general/$4 for students.
Your Henry membership card must be presented at the door for free admission for two.
Gene(sis) Symposium Keynote: 7pm.

"ONE NIGHT ONLY". This is parallel to the Henry opening. No snack stars here. But instead you'll get an unusual monthly art exhibit with protocol unlike no other. Organizer Randy Wood (of Tablet and Matte fame) promises: "A visitor to the gallery at 6pm will see a completely different show than one that comes at 10pm. Pieces are rotated throughout the show, and a lively party-like atmosphere is chemically synthesized through a proton-neutron electrical exchange." The last time I saw a show with rotating art was Vital 5's spectacular Overdraft show (trade art for bounced checks). It was a lot of fun with tons of proton-neutron interactions.
THINKLAB - 1932 2nd Ave (mere steps from Planet Pop! Belltown--next door to the Moore theatre). 6pm-10pm, free.

Prosperity Benefit (FuNC). "Dance and support this years desert enchantment with your musical guides Bodywise, Zion 12, TLC, and Michael Manahan. Fire performances by Isis and Snoh. We are asking for a ten dollar donation to help pay for the space and support this years Prosperity Desert Gathering." Don't get me started on fire performances...
FuNC, 160 N Canal Street (across from the Red Hook Brewery). 9:30pm - 2am. $10 donation. www.seattlefunc.org

Saturday 4/6.

7th Annual Photo Closet Show. Members of the Photo Closet, a black and white darkroom, will be showing recent work at this month long event at the Pound Gallery. One of them will be Christine Taylor - a very talented photographer, who also works for The Stranger.
This time you won't see any photos of hers. Instead she is showing nine abstract pieces. She writes: "It was the Xerox copy that changed my life. Manipulating over-the-counter snap shots on a Digital Xerox machine was how I taught myself to print, (two years before I built a darkroom). These nine pieces of that naive fascination with texture and tone are combined here with my never ending obsession with symbols, the abstract and the quantity of three."
Speaking of never ending obsessions and the quantity of three: Pound is getting three solid snack stars!
Pound Gallery. 6-10pm. Free. http://www.poundgallery.com/upcoming.html

Rites of spring party (FuNC). I am still on low FuNC diet. But this time I have a good excuse: I'll be in San Francisco. Steven reminds the Party Volcano that "distraction labs, our burning man camp, is putting this party on this next saturday. should be a fun party with great costumes. dj miss kick is headlining. admission is by donation with costume. all proceeds go to theater schmeater." Can't wait to see the pictures!
FuNC, 160 N Canal Street. 9pm - 2am. Donation. http://www.ritesofspringparty.org

Sub_sonic and J-Justice (Nations). Jason is asking the Party Volcano to forward this information: "This will be sub_sonic's first appearance since their blistering set of funky beats and live improv at The Baltic Room in January." I have no idea what sub_sonic is and I only have vague memories of January. On the other hand I do remember clearly the first time I went to Nation two or three years ago. It had just opened and a friend of mine and I went to check it out. The cover charge was ten bucks and we asked the guy at the door "for what?". The whole place was empty and not even filled with smelly hippies on drugs (Nexus). He said: "New York style, you know?". That guy had obviously never been to New York City. We laughed so hard he eventually let us in for half the price probably to get rid of us. Why am I telling this story? Because Jason is willing to put some folks on the guest list! Try jjustice@attbi.com. If you don't get on it, come down anyway and embarrass the bouncer until he lets you in for free.
Seattle style, you know?
Nation, 1921 5th Ave. $8. http://www.ispyseattle.com, http://www.thisislivingroom.com .

Sunday 4/6

Solstice Parade Rummage Sale. This annual Rummage Sale is the first of many fundraisers that pay for the costs of producing the Solstice Parade in Fremont. Ray says the Solstice Parade Rummage Sale last year was a lot of fun. He estimated there were about 100 people last time.
Powerhouse, 3940 Fremont Ave. N. 9am to 5pm. www.fremontartscouncil.org
