Chris Burden Lecture @ University of Washington.

The press release sounds harmless:

Chris Burden is a participating artist in the Bellevue Art Museum's new exhibition TRESPASSING: Houses x Artists. He will discuss his role in this project as well as the role of artitsts and architects today., 7:00-9:00 pm, Kane Hall 110, Walter Chapin Simpson Center for the Humanities, Bellevue Art Museum and the University of Washington Public Art Program, 206-543-3920

To me there is no doubt about Chris Burden being a crazy fuck. The first time I heard about him was a year ago when Gary Smoot confessed that his Wiener installations are inspired by one of Chris Burden's ideas involving throwing stuff into a running jet engine. Burden's most famous performance art work is probably his Five Day Locker Piece:

FIVE DAY LOCKER PIECE, University of California, Irvine, April 26-30, 1971: I was locked in Locker Number 5 for five consecutive days and did not leave the locker during this time. The locker measured two feet high, two feet wide, and three feet deep. I stopped eating several days prior to entry. The locker directly above me contained five gallons of bottled water; the locker below me contained an empty five gallon bottle.

Two years later he almost set himself on fire as part of a different happening:

1973 - Wearing no clothes, Chris Burden entered his studio from a small room at the back. Two assistants placed one end of 60-foot sheets of glass on each of his shoulders. The sheets sloped onto the floor at right angles from his body. The assistants poured gasoline down the sheets of glass. Stepping back they threw matches to ignite the gasoline. After a few seconds the artist jumped up, sending the burning glass crashing to the floor. (Icarus) - According to some sources just a few invited friends were present as audience and witness as Chris Burden narrowly escaped being set on fire.

Doesn't this make you want to go and listen to what he is thinking about art? - I thought so too.
Kane Hall 110 @ University of Washington, 7:00-9:00 pm, free.

Victoria Haven and Susan Dory @Howard House Contemporary Art.

PV reporter David K. is pointing out this opening at the Howard House Contemporary Art:

Here's a head's up for my friend Billy's gallery. These 2 artists are worth checking out. I've enjoyed thier last few solo shows at HH.

Victoria Haven, in her second solo show at Howard House, presents works on paper that utilize common office materials such as tape, whiteout, stickpins and carbon paper. Haven’s works develop into delicate landscapes of repetitive lines and forms meandering through fields of pastel color. In a sense, Haven combines the conceptual framework of Sol LeWitt with the sensuous simplicity of Agnes Martin. Yet her natural urge to resist defining 2D or 3D space and her use of uncommon art materials enables her to grow beyond categorization.

In Susan Dory’s third solo exhibition at Howard House, continues her painting investigation of pattern, finding influence from scientific graphing, circuitry and carnival lights. Dory creates dazzling all-over compositions that are a result of her observations. Multiple forms repeat, shifting off the picture plane in beautiful harmony. Pulsating complimentary color, dazzling the eyes like light reflecting off a disco ball or a burning afterimage. Eight new paintings will hang in the front gallery.

Howard House Contemporary Art, 2017 Second Avenue, opening reception 6 - 8 pm.

Parade of the Lost Souls (Vancouver BC)

This is for Gopi and all the other readers that are spending their weekend in Vancouver BC:

The Parade of the Lost Souls is an annual neighbourhood celebration to honour the dead, wake the living and chase away bad luck.(At Grandview Park on the Drive, Saturday, October 26, 7:00 pm)

Halloween, the Day of the Dead and All Saints Day are traditional celebrations in many cultures. For some cultures, this celebration marks the end of the year. The Parade of the Lost Souls is an attempt to regain some of the significance of these seasonal celebrations. A colorful torch-lit procession makes its way through neighbourhood streets and alleys. Spectral brides dance under the street lights. The spirits awake and and everyone takes part in a grand finale featuring torch choreography and fireworks.

Grandview Park, Vancouver BC, 7pm.

Closing Reception of FUROTICA @ Pound.

FUROTICA's closing reception is on Saturday. Here is what we wrote last week:

Last year’s Seattle Lesbian and Gay Rilm Festival featured director Rick Castro’s film, and audience favorite, PLUSHIES AND FURRIES. This year, be sure to see Castro’s FUROTICA, a gallery show featuring photos, paintings, and animation exploring Plushie and Furrie lives and desires. The show will be held in two gallery spaces starting on October 18 and closing on October 26.

This is about Plushies - people who dress up as plushies and have sex or do other plushy things. Party Volcano advises you to carefully read the instructions for cleaning plushies before getting involved with Seattle's rather small and somewhat incestuous Plushie scene. One more advice: stay away from Winnie (the Pooh).

THE POUND GALLERY is located at 1216 10th Avenue between Spring and Union St.
October 18-26, 12-4pm Open daily except Monday, Oct 21, during the film festival.
Closing Reception October 26, 8-10pm FREE

BUH-Bye Seattle (Halloween Party).

Amazon's Scott "The Floor Will Hold" Kurttila is moving to San Francisco and decided to have a Farewell-Halloween-Fundraiser Party. The suggested donation is $20 (contributed to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation) but my sources are telling me it'll be a huge party. Scott is also asking us to send him our favorite "Scott memory":

Just click on the link below and go to the evite. Click "change your reply" then type in the boxes to include your costume, favorite "Scott memory" and words of wisdom for me. You can read what others wrote. Just click on "See All Guest Answers" below the invitee list as you scroll down.

The fact that nobody here at Party Volcano's headquarter doesn't really know who Scott is didn't prevent us from sending our favorite "Scott memory":

Scott and I have known each other for many years. In fact we went to school together. Here is my favorite memory of him: It was one of those cold winters in Finland and it was truly not fun looking for dead squirrels in the forest next to our school. We both had left our flute at home and our music teacher ordered us to collect dead animals. To this day I still don't understand why we had to rub our teacher's back with those squirrels in the afternoon. But we did learn our lesson: We never left our music instruments at home again!

Notice that he didn't mention that the story had to be true...

The Haunted Warehouse (no,really) - 612 Alaskan Way - Top floor, 8pm.
(Please send your favorite "Scott memory" to
partyvolcano@yahoo.com and I'll make sure it will get posted on Evite!)

One year anniversary party of Rivet @ CoCA.

I can't believe how unorganized those CoCA folks are. Considering that they haven't announced anything I don't think that anybody is showing up at Rivet's anniversary party. I wouldn't go. You should join Party Volcano and hang out with Scott Kurttila and talk about the good old days...

CoCA, 9pm-2am.

First Annual Anniversary Bowling party.

For almost a year Patti (cheesie) and her large group of friends have been meeting every other Tuesday to - bowl. Every time I get her wrap-up email the next day with tons of photos and long descriptions of the fun I was missing out I kick myself that I didn't go.

Here is the scoop:

It's at west seattle bowl at 7:00 (10 lanes have been reserved already). Impress me with you creative talents by bringing a snack. and here's the most important part, YOU HAVE TO DRESS UP!

Okay, no one will be turned away at the door but its more fun if you dress up. We are thinking 70s, prom, formal evening wear or whatever costume you were going to wear for halloween anyway. Think of the photos OH!

West Seattle Bowl, 7pm-10pm.

Cold Lava.

International House Of Pain (Sat 10/19).

I was clearly daydreaming when Susan asked me: Are you next? Monotone flogging sound and two glasses of strong Vodka Cranberry had beamed me into a different world.

Before I went to the International House Of Love party I started the evening at Vain, which was hosting an after show party with The Stranger for "Paradise Hotel" - a movie shown at the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. I was told that the hip hair salon Vain (located at the old Vogue) used to be an old brothel. The party took place on all three floors of the building. The bar and the dance floor were on the first floor and the rest of the house had rooms with some sort of art installations. In one of those rooms two film projectors were showing two movies on two opposite walls. To the left there was a guy arguing. His girlfriend was yelling back from the right. Another public break up scene at Pike Place Market for my collection!

Mistress Matisse was also present and had her own room, where she demonstrated some flogging techniques. I have read some of her Control Tower articles in the Stranger and I have to admit that I always imagined her as a tough dominatrix - like they used to invite to German talk shows. The meanest dominatrix I remember seen on German TV said that she likes torturing her slave (who was constantly craving for punishment) by not torturing him. But Mistress Matisse is sweet! I thought: "She is probably baking a cake tomorrow". Now you know: I usually daydream about cakes.
