Joe Coleman is signing "The book of Joe" @ Roq la Rue

Kirsten writes:

This Friday, Oct 24th, from 5-7 pm famed artist Joe Coleman will be at the gallery to sign copies of his new book "The Book of Joe"- a large hardcover book of Joe's paintings with essays by Asia Argento,Jack Sargent, and Anthony Haden-Guest. We will have lots of books on hand. We hope you'll join us and come meet one of the most extraordinary artists of our time.

“The book of Joe explores in excruciating detail the artist’s fascination with the junctions between saint and sinner, sacred and profane, holy and horrifying. Using a single-hair brush and a jeweler’s magnifying lenses, Coleman packs his canvases with hallucinatory detail. “

Coleman’s work has been shown at the American Visionary Art Museum, The Hieronymus Bosch Museum in Rotterdam, and Seattle’s own COCA.

The Odeon Bar Radio Show

Scott Beale (primary tentacle of the Laughing Squid) writes:

Hey gang, Laughing Squid will be joining The Odeon Bar as they invade Seattle this weekend for a action packed show at The Catwalk Club on Friday, October 24th. In the past Chicken John and his crew of eclectic performers, misfits and barflys have done shows in Portland and Brooklyn and now, armed with a former Green Tortoise bus and Chicken's mastery of the air throttle, we will taking Seattle by storm. If you know anyone in the Seattle/Tacoma/Olympia area, please let them know that we are coming their way and they should not miss this show. Even our dear friend Phat Man Dee, queen of the Pittsburg scene, is flying out to SF just for this special trip up north.

If you read the evite (link see below) you'll know that this will be great event:

Hi. My name is Ben Burke. I work the door at a small place of entertainment in San Francisco. It's called the Odeon Bar. This year we are doing the Catwalk October 24th. Admission is $5. There are about 65 of us. The show will be incredible.

This motley crew of shunned showmen, persecuted performers and banned bands have turned out the lights, closed down the bar and opened the road. Hundreds of miles later, they arrive in your town and assume control of some poor, unsuspecting nightspot.

The Catwalk, on Friday, October 24th, at 9pm. Everything that is Odeon is unloaded onto the stage. The bartenders! The bands! The beauties! The bad, bad ideas! And we got a lot of bad ideas here at The Odeon. This is one of them.

The list of artists that will perform - or whatever they will do on stage - is just too long to print it here. This is clearly PV's value pack recommendation for this week. We will also review this event at our Party Volcano's Halloween Consumer Report 2003.

V, The Fool @ On the Boards

Sounds horrible:

On the Boards (OtB) presents V, a self-described "psychedelic orchestra," led by local musicians Timothy Young and Paul Moore for a two-night engagement, October 24-25 at 9 p.m. Young and Moore wrote, composed, arranged and orchestrated an evening-length piece entitled The Fool, and solicited a group of 30+ Seattle musicians and vocalists to join them in presenting this full-length work. This new group of songs lyrically explores aspects of the fool archetype, including historical references, perspectives on current events, explorations of foolers and those that are fooled. Led by Moore on keyboard and lead vocals, and Young on guitar and lead vocals, the orchestra includes strings, woodwinds, brass, a triple rhythm section and small choir. The result is an eclectic sound and experience, described by Moore and Young, in the spirit of The Flaming Lips, Neil Young, The Polyphonic Spree, Charles Ives, Os Mutantes and Stravinsky.

Send us a Cold Lava report if it wasn't horrible. (Band members, boyfriends and girlfriends of band members do not qualify!) And also please do send us a Cold Lava report if it was indeed horrible. (Band members, boyfriends and girlfriends of band members do absolutely qualify!)
Thank you in advance.

The Parade Of The Lost Souls in Vancouver BC.

This is a nice thing to do if you happen to be in Vancouver this weekend:

"My friends and I attended the Parade of the Lost Souls... it was simply the most powerful, poetic, spooky, beautiful evening of the year. You people have magical powers. This and Illuminares are the two most important events to be found in this city"

Kelly Pearce, neighbourhood participant

The Parade of the Lost Souls is an annual neighbourhood celebration to honour the dead, wake the living and chase away bad luck.(At Grandview Park on the Drive, Saturday, October 25, 2003, 7:00 pm)

Hallowe'en, the Day of the Dead and All Saints Day are traditional celebrations in many cultures. For some cultures, this celebration marks the end of the year. The Parade of the Lost Souls is an attempt to regain some of the significance of these seasonal celebrations. A colorful torch-lit procession makes its way through neighbourhood streets and alleys. Spectral brides dance under the street lights. The spirits awake and and everyone takes part in a grand finale featuring torch choreography and fireworks.

World Of Wigs (W.O.W.) @ ANDY'S DINER

We have already told you about this event and warned you to get your wig early.

Now it's time to use at:

"What a small world!" Join us in shrinking it down even further, so that it fits into the space of just a few train cars! Visit the world's newest countries, Wigdonia and Wiglandia, as they open their borders for the evening. Visitors are welcome, so long as they are wearing a wig! Wigdonians and Wiglandians are very competetive, and each will be rolling out the red carpet of hospitality to all foreign dignitaries. To help us in recognizing and appreciating your distinguished status, we encourage you to display your national accent from Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, North America, or elsewhere.

Be sure to visit the international bar and toast fellow visitors. Who knows, you might go home with a new trade agreement! Or dine on the regional specialties cooked by Wiglandia's premiere chefs! Dance to the head-spinning sounds of the Wigdonian DJ room!

Don't miss this opportunity, because the borders close forever after midnight!

Note: Wiglandia's kitchens are open until 10 PM

Hommel's, Russo's & Bressler's summer blow-out party

We wrote about this event two weeks ago in one of our Future Lava reports:

Hey everyone!!!!!

Huge party October 25th!!! Tickets are available and going fast so buy yours today at www.francisnash.com/party or you can get them from me at 206-354-9484.

Again we are throwing a huge end of summer blow-out on Saturday October 25th. Tickets are only $25 for a night of live performances, dance music, great food and an OPEN BAR serving top shelf booze all night! Again it's only $25 (heck you spend that much on a half tank of gas these days).

This is going to be one of the great parties of the year and if it's a success we'll be doing one of these every year, so hurry up and get on board. You don't want to be looking at someone else's pictures as they tell you how great it was.

See you all soon!

Guerrilla Masquerade Dinner Party @ Mama's Mexican Kitchen

Here is the plan:

Hey Guerrillas!

The next Guerrilla Masquerade Party is coming up this next Saturday October 25th, and the lucky locations have been picked. Remember, this month's official theme is Masquerade, so dress up, put on a mask, and come out for the 3 Ds - Dinner, Drinks, and Dancing.

At 9pm, all us masked freaks will show up for some delicious enchiladas and margaritas at Mama's Mexican Kitchen in Belltown (2334 2nd Ave). We don't have reservations, but this place is big enough that we should all fit (and they have yummy margaritas). The menu has a wide array of items (including great margaritas) that should accomodate anyone -- from devout vegans to ravenous meat-eaters (to margarita swilling drunks). Oh yeah -- did we mention the tasty margaritas?

As people finish dinner (and their margaritas), we'll move next door to the Lava Lounge to rally the troops. Then, at 11pm, we'll head a block down to The Down Under niteclub (2407 1st Ave). This place is open til 4am, so we can party til the sun comes up. Well, okay, so it won't be coming up in Seattle at 4am, but maybe in NYC?

Pacific Decadal Transformation @ The VIP Room

I asked Dana - one of the wonderful Three Imaginary Girls - to participate as an expert for PV's Halloween Consumer Report 2003. She felt honored but makes no claims to be a Halloween party expert. She was so kind to share with us what is on her Imaginary Halloween Radar:

Come celebrate radical transformation by dressing up as the person, place, thing, or event that has most transformed your life for the BETTER in the last ten years. The VIP room at the Bad JuJu Lounge (1518 11th Ave.) is upstairs, and has a full cash bar. Party starts at 9pm, and there will be flash-mob ceremony at 11:11pm. Come prepared to chant, yell, sing, pray to your past selves, and party your transformed ass off.

We have received additional information from Lawrence, the host of the event:

PDT is completely free. The Bad Juju VIP room has a cash bar, so drinks'll cost ya, but otherwise no cost. Hey, just FYI, Daylight Saving Time ends that night, so you might want to let all partiers know that bars will be open an extra hour as we fall back.

Ciao!
~LW

This is probably one of my favorites for Saturday. I'll tell you why in our upcoming Halloween Consumer Report.

The VIP room at the Bad JuJu Lounge (1518 11th Ave.), free.

Tantra: The Diwali party @ EMP

James Whetzel writes:

it is Diwali time, and time to seriously party. So I am playing at EMP with Darek M., DJ Manpreet, Peter Madrill, Ravi Singh on Dhol, guest Dhol players from BC and also William Gilchrist. It is a benefit for Asha for education, $10, 9pm till late.

Ike (Bollywood) writes:

This is a reminder for the party this Saturday (Oct 25) at the Liquid Lounge in the EMP.

A lot of effort is being put to provide you all with an exotic Indian experience.
All the guests who show up in the first hour (10-11pm) will be exclusively welcomed by the RajKumaris (princesses) at the door.

The Liquid Lounge will be converted to a dance floor to accommodate close to 200 people and the lower level (Turntable restaurant) will be the lounge area for the rest of the 200 people.

Thus the capacity is close to 400, so please make sure that you show up early as we won't be able to allow more than 400 people into the venue.

There is ample parking all around the venue.

Dress up!!

Looking forward to seeing you all there.

Cheers,
Ike Singh

Cold Lava

5th Seattle SketchFest @ Broadway Performance Hall (10/16/2003)

Two weeks ago Seattle SketchFest got hit by one of PV's Golden Lemon awards. We warned our readers that there would be a good chance that you'd regret going after realizing it's crap. This is a Cold Lava report from Alex, who doesn't seem to have shit on his fingers when it comes to picking comedy shows:

Hiya. Just thought I'd let you know I attended a number of the sketchfest comedy troops this weekend and laughed my ass off. Wigbox from Los Angeles was amazing! Troop! from Los Angeles was almost equally amazing, and I was VERY impressed with the Seattle comedy teams, Bald Face Lie and the other troop's show "Flaming Box of Stuff." (Also playing this weekend.)

Thought I'd say, because of the "risky" classification you gave the festival.
Best, Alex

Vital 5's ARBITRARY ART GRANT 2003: DIGITAL GRAFITTI (10/10/2003).

I still run to my mailbox every morning to see whether Vital 5's check has finally arrived. Only slowly I am accepting that somebody else won V5's Arbitrary Art Grant 2003. I can';t believe it: The bird pooped on somebody else's photo. When I was congratulating Greg at the Genius Award party in person I learned that the winner of the AAG 2003 is Mr. Andrew Small. We don't know much more about this gentleman except for that he used the money for paying off his cell phone bill.

We are beaten by a cell phone addict! Our congratulations go out to Mr. Small. Among this year's losers is also David K. We would like to show his pictures, because they are funny and entertaining:
