Critical Mass

A mysterious email is pointing out this event:

Seattle's monthly last-Friday-of-the-month Critical Mass falls on Halloween this year. Meet at Westlake Plaza (4th and Pine) at 5:30 pm on bicycle for an uncharted citywide group ride. Costumes and lights make it better. Destination: party.

Westlake Plaza, 5:30 pm, free.

The Circus Contraption @ CHAC

I am not a big fan of circuses and cabarets.

The Circus Contraption band is headlining, with special guests Baby
Gramps, The Greenwood All-Stars, DJ Mauck, and from L.A., the Red Ant Dance and Costume Ensemble. The whole Circus Contraption crew will be there in force with some VERY special surprises-- Including a 20 person recreation of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" dance. What could be better?

We have received a similar invitation about a "Red Ant Fashion Show and Scary Monsters Party", which is the same party:

The Red Ant Fashion Show delights with Burning Man inspired wearable art, designed and created by Rachel (Red Ant) from LA, a member of the Seattle-based Bluehouse collective. For those who missed the show on the playa, or loved the show on the playa, we'll be doing another sexy display of clothing and lovely burners on Halloween! The fashion show is at midnightish but there will be a freak-night lineup of bands, with Circus Contraption, Baby Gramps & Greenwood All-Stars. CHAC will also be hosting a scary video contest & a costume contest. Enjoy haunting libations, decor, music and lovely people.
Dancers and models will include several lovelies you know and love :).

Capitol Hill Arts Center, 1621 12th Ave., 8pm, $8-$10.

22 YEARS OF LIVE INVENTION @ The Rainbow

I hope James is joking:

hey seatown P.V. wuz up y'all? hope all's good!!!
FYI this weekend blowout at the old skool Rainbow (U-Dist.) here is a must-see happenin' for anyone that's ever been into Zappa. (or, for that matter, anyone that digs classic rock and great showmanship, musicianship, and composition, etc!!!) Ike Willis, Napoleon Murphy Brock and Don Preston are the REAL & GENUINE DEAL - they all collaborated extensively w/Frank Zappa - and they've STILL got it, big time! In sum, these three, plus their New York State-based supporting cast, can be counted on, night in & night out (i speak f/experience)
Here's the full scoop (see below)

sincerely, james kirchmer

p.s. - btw -- rachel from visqueen is friends with the bass player so you know these guys must be cool, right? ;-)

Feralia Deceptiva

In our consumer report we were making fun of Feralia Deceptiva but after looking at some other Halloween party invitations I am willing to change my opinion a little bit. This one is probably not the worst Halloween party. But be warned: no booze, lots of hippies. Pluses: good sound system.

As the moth is drawn to the flame, we draw together to rememberance of greatest journey of all. You are invited to celebrate this time with you friends at Seattle's second oldest theater, Washington Hall, where Jazz once ruled and Jimi Hendrix found his sounds. This is a costume ball, a masquerade whith a focus on dance featuring the music of Seattle's Tribal Underground DJ's

Music provided by...

TLC (this house head is back from Alaska)

Michael Manahan (the tribal house wizard)

Phoenix Olivia (trance and breaks goddess from Van. BC)

Osiris Indriya (deep tribal progressive and deep psytrance)

SAM Masquerade Ball

TROLL-A-GO-GO

This Halloween party was actually one of the few parties that got a positive review in our consumer report. This party has become better and better over the years up to a point where they almost attract too many people. We warned that it might be too crowed this year:

TROLL-A-GO-GO!
an annual All-Hallows Eve extravaganza, haunted masquerade ball
& fundraising benefit for the Fremont Arts Council

featuring
Kultur Shock
Quasi Nada
Darek Mazzone (KEXP, Wo-Pop)

The Monster's Bowl Halloween Party

This Halloween party was ranked to the lower end of our consumer report list. The steep $30 cover charge includes free pool and bowling, 2 dance floors and $500 costume prizes. Don't go.

Garage on Broadway, $30
http://seattle.craigslist.org/eve/17090446.html

Neighbors 80's Halloween Prom

This event was "hard to read". It could be lame or it could be a lot of fun. The mixed reviews in the consumer report are reflecting this ambiguity.

Neighbors on Capitol Hill.

BUMP 2003

I forgot to mention that this is organized by Gay City and it might be even a fundraiser. The Halloween Party Roundtable didn't like EMP. Cover is $35.

EMP, $35.

CRAZYFUN HALLOWEEN COSTUME CONTEST MADNESS NITE

This event has probably not very much in common with Halloween. The show just happens to fall on Halloween. I still like it:

ANTS INVASION (Adam Ant tribute), EXPLODING BOYS (Cure tribute), BLACK CELEBRATION (Depeche Mode Tribute).
Plus spooky DJ DAVEY J spinnin' all your creepy faves, and prizes from local businesses like Sonic Boom and! the Crocodile!

The Crocodile, $8 without costume, $6 with!

Best Spooky Beats at Tost

This is one of the few places in town where you can get away from the Halloween craziness. James Whetzel writes:

Yes it is true Ladies and Gents we are indeed summoning the sprits to Tost on Friday for Halloween. DJ Advent will be in the house playing the spookiest and freshest Arabic and Asian Massive beats.

Special guests West African drum group AKoma will kick things off at 9:30pm with Ghanaian drumming that is sure to rouse some number of the dead from their slumber. Yours truly will surely be especially feeling the throat singing on this auspicious night.

Come out to Tost and enjoy yourself for Halloween.

A Single Night of Terror

In our consumer report I was assuming that this was a ConWorks event - which was a wrong assumption as Sean was pointing out later. He wrote:

Hey! I was disappointed that you thought our party would be empty. I guess I should have mentioned it’s not a ConWorks event so it’s not on their site.

We (The Now Device) our renting the space for the night. Please check http://www.TheNowDevice.com for info on the party.

Best regards,
Sean

The Now Device is home of some of the ex-members of Spaceboat.tv, who did really nice visuals some parties before I went to, so let's have a second look:

The Now Device presents "A single night of Terror". The Now Device and NDCV will horrify you with a live nightmare, creating a groove from the sites and sounds of classic horror. The night will be pierced by the animal cries of House on a Hill, The Beautiful Mothers and Obelus. Perform a dance of darkness on the main floor, experience interactive fright TV rooms or soak in the gore with all night slasher action in the Cinema.

SACREDPROFANE @ Bluebottle Art Gallery

Somebody has to say it: this is crap. Riederer's "sacred sitcom relics in oil on gilded wood" is Fart not Art. Let's hear the other side:

Growing up a quintessential 'latch key kid' during the 1970's, television became Ted Riederer's religion, teacher, and surrogate mother. Through art making, Ted seeks to sanctify pop myths, elevating them to the divine status in the hierarchy of his memory. Through his love of richly glazed pre-Renaissance icon paintings, he satirically explores the relationship between the sacred and the profane. This body of work proposes that pop culture provides an equally legitimate vehicle for our culture's essential archetypes. It's also meant to be as campy, ridiculous, and entertaining as a sinful sit-com.

We sympathize with Ted's tough childhood but we also feel that the U-District Fair 2004 would have been a better venue for exposing painted flower pots and his work to the public. Next!

Specimen @ SOIL.

Is it only me having a major Déjà vu experience with Susan Robb's Macro-Fauxology flashbacks? Those pieces remind me a lot of the Gene(sis) show at the Henry...

Specimen – Nine Investigations of Nature

Reflecting on ideas, memories, and obsessions, artists present personal views of nature Debra Baxter, Kim Bennett, Mandy Greer, Sarah Hoffman, Margie Livingston, Margaret Meehan, Ana Lois-Borzi, Daria Tavoularis, Rachael Weinstein

Nine artists from across the country will present their explorations of the relationship between man and nature.

This exhibit’s title comes from both senses of the word specimen. The first meaning — a sample used for analysis or study — describes the product of artists who are each in their own way considering nature. The study of a specimen (animal, vegetable, mineral, or idea (is a work of the mind. Each is a container of memories and obsessions, and the pieces in this exhibition promise to be very personal.

The second meaning of the word specimen — a representative of the class of things to which it belongs — addresses the nature of the work in this exhibition. Rather than ask artists to respond to the ideas surrounding nature, the curators took the approach of inviting artists who are engaged in these questions as part of their regular practice.

INB CD Release Party.

Peter Sloterdijk wrote an impressive book titled "Critique of Cynical Reason" about theory and history of literature that might explain my fascination and sympathy with the Infernal Noise Brigade, a local anarchistic marching band. In his book Sloterdijk develops this unusual idea of two types of humor identified as Cynical and Kynical (cynical with a 'k') humor, which have been fighting against each other through the history of human societies.

Cynical humor can be characterized as humor used by powerful people directed against the majority of people that have less power. A cynical humor example would be Friedrich the Great when he was "cheering up" his soldiers before an upcoming battle by yelling at them: "Do you dogs want to live forever?"
("Hunde wollt ihr ewig leben?").

Kynical humor is the counterpart, which is used by the underdogs and oppressed and directed against the "upper crust" of ancient and modern societies. Satire (Satyr) is one if its popular forms but I'll give you this example: When Alexander the Great visited the famous Greek philosopher Diogenes, who had made an empty barrel his home, he tried to impress Diogenes by granting him a wish. Diogenes' response was: "Stand from between me and the sun".

For me the Infernal Noise Brigade is a group of Seattle's underdogs that represent the kynical force. They have my full support in completing their historical mission:

The Infernal Noise Brigade is celebrating the release of their second

The Infernal Noise Brigade, a Seattle-based radical, political drum orchestra (marching band) went down to Cancun- the biggest tourist town in Mexico, to protest the WTO During their conference this September. The INB participated in five days of action with 2,000-5,000 other protesters from all over the world against 10,000-20,000 policia, federales and international investigators. After the protest the band went up to Chiapas to play in San Cristobol de Las Casas for Mexican Independence Day and to visit and play for a Zapatista Community.

This night is to show the Documentary that was made from the WTO Protest by the Indy Media Center in Cancun and a slide show of the pictures the INB book in Cancun, to celebrate the CD we recorded on the patio of Cappuccino's- the only punk bar in Cancun, to play for everyone, to create the kind of beautiful chaos the INB is known for, to have fun and games and a night of raucousness....

Noche de Los Muertos

This will be the winner: Space Virgins, Flight2Mars, and Camp DeNile combined their party forces for hosting a costume party at a 12K sqft building in Pioneer Square. The Party Volcano Halloween consumer report gave this event an enthusiastic "thumbs up".

The location seems to be the Old Rainier Brewery:

Due to an unfortunate incident involving a cement mixer, a laminating machine and a lobster, this event will now be happening at the Old Rainier Brewery, 3100 Airport Way South.

Here are more details:

Hey y'all: Area47 invites you to Noche de Los Muertos! (Night of the Dead)
On this night, prepare to cross the thin line between the living and the dead....

You'll be dancing on graves with tormented spirits, eaten by monsters, chillin' in the belly of the beast!

November 1st, 2003, 9pm
Wear your costumes, or be costumed!

Two dance floors and one chill space featuring 12+ DJs including:
Advent (Planet Beat)
Baz (Space Virgins)
Brannon (Space Virgins)
Casey Ann (Space Virgins)
Diem (Mass:ive, Lunasol)
DjML (Space Virgins, Lunasol)
Juan Segovia (Tech-On-Decks)
Shapeshifter (Static Factory)
Tumbleweed (Lunasol)
Osiris (Oracle Gatherings)
Vital (Static Factory)

21+ with ID

Brought to you by your pals in Flight to Mars, the Space Virgin Light Continuum, and Camp DeNile with lovin' help from Diem and the Specialist Clan.

We have heard that there are some new problems with the location.

Gates is clarifies:

I hear that due to some snafu's with the authorities, this party is gonna be moved to a secret location. As in, "only the cool people will know where it is type secret". So start kissing Don Volcano's ass if you want to know where. Multiple DJ's, spanking bartenders, crazy costumery, kick ass ambience, and now STEALTH. Find it if you can.

Later we heard that it looks like it's back on - they had all their peeps call the fire marshall and city council this am, and it worked. Some details to be ironed out, requirements met etc. We'll keep you posted.

Old Rainier Brewery, 3100 Airport Way South.

Day of the Dead Costume Cabaret

After sending out the consumer report I realized that my comments about "Day of the Dead Costume Cabaret" and "Noche de los Muertos" didn't really make any sense. Let me rephrase it: Terrible timing though for "Dead Costume Cabaret". They will come out as the loser I am afraid. "Noche de Los Muertos", the INB event, and "Dead Costume Cabaret" target the same group of party people.

Here are the details:

Show off that Halloween costume one more time

Come to the "Day of the Dead Costume Cabaret" on Saturday, November 1st

Where: Ballard Segway (old Safeway) 5701 22nd Ave. NW (2 blocks N. of Market St.)
What time: 9:00PM - 1:00AM
How much: $10:00
Why should I: to have fun, silly, oh and to raise funds to help complete the documentary, "Depleted Uranium: the Forever Weapon"
What else: a no host bar

The evening will feature a wide variety of Seattle area bands and other entertainment:
Menagerie of Extravagance – a little bit camp, a lot lounge and all fun
Haggis Brothers playing bluegrass, Irish, Scottish, and honky-tonk
Blank Its - an aggressive new wave band with a couple of curve ball changes

Nana Bao and her Bossa Boys – a semi serious, semi-delirious tribute to the great Brazilian musical movement of the 1960’s

and KLED – featuring distorted world music with a flare for performance art.

In between bands, DJ Leslie $, one of Seattle’s favorite celebrity DJ’s will play tracks from her extensive collection of music; and cabaret performer, Uncle Squeaky will perform the “human piñata”, as well as other acts of mystifying absurdity.

Other very special guest appearances will be announced at a later date.
So shake out your Halloween costume for one more night of fun.

D9 @ Velocity

The d9 Dance Collective maybe performs once or twice per year. I really like them. The last show is on Sunday. The Stranger writes about the show in this week's edition:

"The 2003 performance of d9 Dance Collective opens with Tether, a dance choreographed by Lisa Race and built around knotted ropes hanging from the ceiling. As with the graceful but vapid trapeze work that every dancer in town was dabbling in for a while, there are only so many variations on bodies swinging around, and most of them aren't surprising. But as Tether progresses, Race finds some inventive and even witty interactions between ropes and dancers, and the choreography's increasing dynamism convinced me not to be so snooty and let myself get carried away by the loveliness of the dancers whirling about like a posse of Janes leaving Tarzan behind."

d9 Dance Collective at Velocity MainSpace Theater, 915 E Pine St, second floor, 325-8773. $13-$15. Fri-Sun at 8 pm. Through Nov 2.

Smouldering sonification.! EUROSEXY @ Barca

Exploding Cinema and Barca present:

EUROSEXY
sex, film & style

Back by popular demand, Exploding Cinema remounts its popular EUROSEXY program which debuted at this year’s Seattle International Film Festival.

Sex has never been so well dressed as in the stylish European erotic films of the late 60s and early 70s. These artful worlds of playful debauchery feature beautiful actors drenched in stylish clothing, ultra-plush sets, and exotic locations. Join us for a remix of images from films and trailers, with Euro-psychedelic soundtrack music provided by DJ Sureshot. Visuals collected, composed and projected by Peter Lucas.

Exploding Cinema looks to push the boundaries of cinematic experience by questioning the traditional roles of film, filmmaker and audience. Reflecting our rapidly changing world, today's artists are incorporating a wide range of influences into their work and inventing new ways to experience and interact with the moving image. By encompassing elements of visual art, design, and music, the range of film’s possibility is ever growing through redefinition and innovation. Artists are aiding cinema’s escape from the theater by fostering new homes in clubs, galleries, computers, making the form more fluid and accessible. In this sense, the medium is exploding conceptually, creatively, spatially.

Exploding Cinema is a part of Cinema Seattle, producer of the Seattle International Film Festival.

Artwalk Open House @ JAG/O Design Studio

Another art opening on Thursday:

O - Design Studio and JAG Design invite you to the 1020 First Open House, featuring resident and guest artists for the First Thursday Seattle Artwalk.

We are looking forward to yet another open house at the 1020 First Avenue South building, and encourage all that have visited to come back and see our latest work, as well as the work of the other guest and resident artists.

For those who have never visited our space, we invite you to come down after the Artwalk in Pioneer Square and check out work from local emerging artists and explore our studio building. Multiple studios will be open, as well as a shared gallery space on the third floor featuring resident and guest artists.

Our building is much more relaxed and casual than the galleries, and usually turns into a great intimate party...all are welcome and we hope you will make our building a regular stop for the Seattle Artwalk, held on the first Thursday of the month.

*1020 First Avenue South (a.k.a. 1021 Occidental Avenue South), is a great building just across the street from the Seattle Seahawks exhibition center, and a half block from Safeco Field...head on down (south on 1st) after the Artwalk in Occidental Park and Pioneer Square. http://seattle.citysearch.com/feature/10256/

Fourth Annual Shrinky Dink Invitational

This is my absolute favorite. I went last and put my name on a Shrinky Dink I liked. It was called "My Tree Hates You" but unfortunately I got stopped out at $25 during the silent auction. This event happens every year and I have heard that the Shrinky Dink company actually donated those sheets for this event.

Fourth Annual Shrinky Dink Invitational is in full swing. Join us First Thursday November 6th at 7:00pm for this land mark event. This year's charity will be the Richard Hugo House. Come preview these amazing works all day on November 6th with a silent auction to commence at 7:00pm. For any artists interested in creating a Shrinky Dink there is still time if interested you can pick up a packet at Zeitgeist just ask any barista for help

Soiree Francophone à Red Door

Wissam writes:

Salut,

A bientôt !

Three Imaginary Girls' Lava Lamp.

The Three Imaginary Girls were so kind and allowed me to publish their information in Party Volcano's weekly letters. In return they are free to use PV material for their site. It's a win-win situation: They would like to cover more art events and I need more blurbs about music shows. Let's see how this will work out!

This is an excerpt from their last email. They send it out about once a month and you can subscribe to them by sending an email to tig@threeimaginarygirls.com.

Hi imaginary friends!!!!

We here at TIG feel overwhelmed with the abundance this month: so many great shows, so many great interviews, so many kind words, so many events to come! Read on to learn more!

First of all as ever the shows. We saw the Barsuk/Treehouse sponsored "secret" Death Cab for Cutie/John Roderick and Sean Nelson (of the ! Long Winters) show. We loved the Bands Against Bush show, from openers Touchdown Eagle to headliners the Divorce. igDana finally saw the Lights. igChar became infatuated with California bands Clevergirl and Trespassers William. igLiz thought the Mountain Goats were better than your mom, and then considered giving up her dayjob to tour with stellastarr* but instead opted for a Pacific Northwest tour.

...

Sat, Nov 1

* The Magic Magicians/The Moools/Che Arthur/Triumph Of Lethargy Skinned Alive To Death, Sunset Tavern

We've got some Guerrilla Dinner Party Pictures:

Hey Guerrillas!

Although dirty bunny was a little under the weather during Saturday's
GMP, his pal Drinky the Clown took a bunch of great photos at the
Lava Lounge and Rendevous. You can check out his pictures from the

Letters to the Editor

A Single Night of Terror (10/31/2003)

Dear Don Volcano,

ConWorks website doesn't mention that Halloween party probably because ConWorks isn't putting the event on!
They, like many other venues, rent their space when they're not using it of an evening. Criticizing their PR for that is like criticizing whoever owns a warehouse for not promoting the rave that's taking place there.

Best regards,
Eric Fredericksen

Dear Erik,

I have to apologize for assuming that ConWorks would host "A Single Night of Terror". So let me correct my consumer report entry:

This one will be empty. Their own web site doesn't even mention it. Consolidated Works really needs to improve their PR. Sorry guys!

No changes? - That's correct. It'll be empty. Regarding my comment about ConWorks' PR let me tell you that I really like ConWorks events and I would always try to include them in our weekly Party Volcano letters. The last opening with Puccinelli was brilliant. On the other hand I usually hear about those events often when it's already too late or last minute when I read the Stranger. Here is one example. On 1/9/03 I openly complained about your PR:

Events For 1/9/03 to 1/15/03.

Nothing is going on this weekend. If you are interested in theater you might want to check out 14/48 at Conworks. The Stranger mentions it but I haven't been able to confirm that information. Conworks needs to work on their PR. Their web site is old and nobody knows about 14/48 even though it's a good concept.

Or was 14/48 not a ConWorks event either? At least I know Matt Richter is always involved in 14/48. So here is my suggestion: Why not creating an email list? Even CoCA was able to get their act together for that.
