This must be the end of the season. It's definitely slowing down. The highlight of this week is probably the world premiere of Greg Lundgren's "I Am An Artist" at ConWorks. Jon Langford/ Seonna Hong opening @ Roq La Rue

Roq La Rue presents:

Jon Langford
Seonna Hong

New paintings and prints

Opening THIS Friday Nov 7th 6-10pm
Show runs through Nov 28th

Roq la rue presents a two person show featuring the talents of Jon Langford and Seonna Hong.

Though Jon Langford is best known as a seminal musician,(as a member of the legendary Mekons, The Waco Brothers, Pine valley Cosmonauts, ect) his visual art is quickly garnering him an international reputation. His outsider-ish paintings of faded icons of Americana (such as musical heroes Bob Wills, Jimmie Rodgers, and patsy cline) are tributes to both the subject of the painting as well as an autobiographical exploration. Despite being born a Welshman, Langford captures perfectly a sense of a forgotten American west, strewn with bones, rusty tin,and faded bandanas. His rough portraits are scratched and sanded to further enhance a feeling of "old timey-ness". Langford's work is the visual equivalent hearing an old Hank Williams record, slightly scratched and popping on an old record player in a empty barroom in the middle of Nowheresville, USA.

Seonna Hong is a Los angeles artist who quietly is rising through the contemporary pop ranks with her perfectly rendered paintings of little girls, princesses ,and animals. Very much in the tradition of 50’s children’s book illustrations, Hong’s painting are definitely sweet, but not cloying. They portray a pure innocence and joy found in imagination without resorting to the use of irony or a sly wink to the audience in order to be deemed "hip". Nonetheless, her straight forward approach appeals to an demanding audience as her colorful, funny, gentle paintings sell out as soon as she paints them.

Both artists will be in attendance at the opening. Jon langford will afterwards perform a solo set at the Sunset Tavern at 12 AM (with Jesse Sykes and The Sweet Hereafter)

THE REAL OLD TESTAMENT @ ConWorks

Andy Spletzer (Stranger Ex-Pat and ConWorks Film Programmer) writes:

Hello Party Volcano,

I'm going to do my part to try and boost the ConWorks profile, at least in terms of publicity for the Cinema. I am putting you on my "press" email list (better late than never), with the knowledge that you may not be able to cover my film events, or that you may not like them. But you should at least know about them.

Here are the details:

Reality TV meets the Book of Genesis as we find out what happens when
Biblical patriarchs stop being hallowed religious figures and start getting real!

PAUL HANNUM is the co-director of the film, and he also plays the Snake.
He's flying in for the three screenings, and will hang out in the ConBar afterward to talk with the peasants and the philistines.

The movie just played Microcinefest in Baltimore where it won the Grand Jury's "Way Cool Film" prize. It's played Slamdance (Audiences highest rated narrative feature), the Hamptons Int'l Film Fest, Wisconsin Int'l Film Fest, Sidewalk Moving Picture Film Fest (Audience Award), and a couple of festivals in Germany. Additionally, it played at the Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago as a Finalist for the Wetzel Award, given to outstanding comedies in Independent Film.

In addition to the feature film, we will be showing the locally made short film EXTREME BIBLE STORIES, an animated look at an Old Testament massacre.
Filmmaker Bill Ross will attend at least one and possibly all of the screenings.

CONSOLIDATED WORKS is located at 500 Boren Ave. N (Republican and Boren), in the South Lake Union neighborhood, 381-3218.
November 7 - 9
THE REAL OLD TESTAMENT
Friday - Sunday at 8 pm
Tickets are $7, $5 for Members
ConBar Opens at 7 pm

Vital 5: Fraud

I thought Manslaughter was brilliant and this one promises to be another excellent show - if you have a strong stomach. I don't know much the play except for the official but rather vague press release:

Consolidated Works is proud to present the WORLD PREMIERE of local star
Greg Lundgren’s I Am An Artist, a full-length performance that looks at art, death, murder, and crime. The show is a daring production that follows the life and subsequent trial of a female artist whose collection of work includes the artists she murders and places on display as installations. It is bound to be a production surrounded in controversy, both in the style it is presented and the content it explores.

When I was running into Greg at the Stranger Genius Awards party at ConWorks some weeks ago he told me that he had been working on this play since March and now it's finally done. He wouldn't tell me any details but he did say: "Do you have a gun? Bring it! You will need it."

13th Oracle Gathering: Ocean Deep

Okay, we have been making fun of events like those Oracle Gatherings by raising hippie alerts and by using images involving an "unwashed Janis Joplin, shrooming through a recurring yeast infection" (see PV Consumer Report 2003). In attempt to find my inner peace let me go into more details by quoting from their invitation:

Greetings Oceanic Creatures,

We are excited to share with you the 13th Oracle Gathering, Ocean Deep synchronized with the Harmonic Concordance alignment, a Full Moon and Lunar Eclipse.

We invite you to dive into the depths of this archetype and explore what is stirring in your subconscious, in the abyss. Through this journey, may we see ourselves reflected by the inspirations around us and may it invoke greater wisdom for our personal relations with our own Selves and each other. May we rise with the waves and enter into Shamballa.

We invite you to bathe in the womb of these waters.
As you are the drops that keep the tub full.

Every drop is in an important part in the entirety of the ocean.
Every drop nourishes us and reminds us that we never have to be thirsty.
And every drop purifies our very soul so we may honor and respect our piece in the grand ocean.

May we arise passion, inspiration, joy, and empowerment as we explore the "mysti! cal creations" that lie deep in the unknown.
Or do we really know?...

I do really know one thing: That's just creepy hippie lingo!

Here are the features of this event:

* Opening Ceremony (8pm) with Siberian Shamans led by Biven Mamonta inspiring happiness - www.bogomudr.org
* Yoga with Karisini
* Deepening Dance led by Cory Michael, Isis & Osiris Indriya

Cold Lava

Halloween 2003

To us it seemed Halloween was a night where everybody was searching for the best party without finding it. We thought it would be funny to document some of the odysseys as parallel stories along the same Halloween timeline.

5:00pm

Don Volcano: Weekend! I need to take a nap.

6:00pm

Uncle Daddy: buy beer and clean up. plan is for six or seven west seattlites to come to my house to prefunc at 9:00pm, then go to first party at about 10:00pm.

7:00pm

Gates Ballard: I'm thinking of hitting the one on Linden after my troll a gogo shift 8-11.

9:00pm

Don Volcano: Shit, is it already 9pm? I’ve got 5 messages. This will be a busy night.

9:03pm

Uncle Daddy: original plan completely falls apart- that's ok, i'm late getting my costume together. with my silver pants, climbing harness, straps, guns, and blinking jetpack, i am a superbad futuristic-tactical-space-assassin!

9:30pm

Don Volcano: There are 7 private parties on my list. I am never gonna make it to all of them. But which one will be the best? We need to use our Party Scout system, I’ll start with Marek’s Halloween Party.

10:00pm

Uncle Daddy: many parties to choose from. i want to go to troll-a-go-go, but everyone else just wants to go to private parties. d.w. is going to t.a.g.g. and promises to hold a ticket for me- what a guy!

10:58pm

Don Volcano: this is a great party. But I am getting restless. I’ll try my luck and check out Halloween Freakout. It’s only 10 blocks away.

11:07pm

Uncle Daddy: angela and i leave my house, and go to house party on linton st. to meet briar and basia. the house is packed, gopi has green hair. i can barely squeeze through the crowd with my jetpack. "hey ghostbuster!" um, no. this is a fun party, but there has to be better. i round everyone up to go to party on 85th. i see bernd, tell him to come with- he stays and proclaims this to be the best party. "oh, you're a ghostbuster!" no man, i'm not a ghostbuster.

11:21pm

Don Volcano: this party sucks. That was the wrong move. Is this Ayesha? I thought she wanted to meet at Marek’s party? Let’s get out of here.

11:33pm

Gates Ballard: I was at Troll a gogo until 11:30ish.. sold out, lotsa costumes, three Roys (as in Siegfried and Roy, I got a tiger on my neck). hooked up
with Nicole and we went by the blue house - heard there was a party, nothing at all going on there..

11:40pm

Don Volcano: I am getting reports from Troll-a-gogo that it’s not that great. The one in the central district isn’t good either. I am staying.

11:45pm

Gates Ballard: went up to CHAC, pretty crowded down in the bar aka the"joint", DJ shapeshifter, but no one we knew. Didn't go upstairs to the red ant/circus contraption.

12:00am

Uncle Daddy: we intercept ayesha and all meet at 85th st. party to connect with mary. i'm not sure whose party this is- but it really sucks! i convince everyone to go to the castaway lounge (house party in west seattle), because it's sure to be great!

12:45 am

Uncle Daddy: we arrive at castaway. it's fine for any other night, but this is halloween- we need super groovin!! we make limp effort, then decide to go back to first party.

1:00am

Gates Ballard: Went down to a small loft party on 1st Ave South, the old Jukebox City Building (the one with the horse sign). Young crowd, outta booze, decent DJ, good cupcakes. Kids kept asking me "what are you?" and I would only answer "FOD".. they didn't seem to like that.

1:30am

Don Volcano: Uncle daddy and Angela just came back from the Castaway lounge. I am not moving. There is no clear winner: all the parties are so-so. This one is good.

1:30am

Uncle Daddy: feeling like amateurs for chasing the party, instead of just par-tay-in', we arrive back at linton. bernd was right- though not great, this is the best party. finally, we're in a groove. we all hit the dance floor and we're dancing hard. the dj plays the ghostbuster song. (why god?) angela says- don't fight it, just be a ghostbuster. i finally accept it and realize i do look like a ghostbuster. in fact, with my sparkly silver pants and black wife-beater, i look like a ghostbuster for the village people. (oh well.) "get it, ghostbuster!" that's right- who ya gonna call!

2:10am

Don Volcano: I am going home. I am exhausted. How are those priests able to wear this stuff day in day out?

2:30am

Gates Ballard: About 2:30 back to Bluehouse to see if it was an afterhours...but no signs of life. Briar and her posse had headed out to the West Seattle party..perhaps that was action packed? Decided to call it a night and save it up for Saturday.
Bad party night for Gates.
