Events for 1/2 to 1/8/2004

Happy New Year! I hope your new year's eve was as pleasant as mine. After a fantastic dinner get-together at Wazhma's house I headed over to a private party in Columbia city. Still restless at 3am I decided to drive all the way to Queen Anne to Arne Piehl's NYE party, which was probably the best party that evening. Please send me your cold lava reports for NYE and I'll compile a list if I get enough reports.

It looks like we are having a slow start into the new year. The best event this week is in my opinion 14/48 - not only because it's almost the only event. There will also be Art Walk on Thursday and the Stranger is recommending 12 Minutes Max (weird shorts) @ On the Boards for Sunday but other than that it's pretty dead.

Fortunately my company is sending me to my home town Hamburg in Germany. I'll send you a report about the Golden Pudel Club (Der Goldene Pudel) and Mother (Mutter)!

Chris writes:

Greetings All!

Hope you have all been having a nice holiday season. I've been on a hiatus from events to do some traveling and take an overdue break. But the UFO world will be coming back soon with some mod flavored events in 2004. Stay tuned!

In the meantime, I want to let you all know that I'll be filling in for DJ Gort at his regular Friday gig at The Lava Lounge - located at 2226 2nd Ave. in Belltown (a few doors down from The Crocodile). I'll be spinning the usual 60's rock & soul, Brit Pop, and garage rock sounds you've come to expect from me. Hope you can stop by. I'll be starting a little after 9PM this Friday Jan. 2 (hopefully you'll all have recuperated from New Year's festivities by then).

The Lava Lounge serves up a plethora of tasty drinks, has a fun vibe and best of all - it's free to get in!

Happy New Year,

Chris (aka DJ Chrispo)

Saturday 1/3

Stephen Schildbach Opening @ Bluebottle Art Gallery

The title of the show is "Objects, Memory, and Associations":

Depending on the generation and culture we grew up in, particular objects will hold our memories or conjure up associations. For some, the common objects Stephen Schildbach chooses to present are a reminder of personal experiences and memories. For others, the imagery will spark associations to a pop culture that lingers around today, but is mostly from the past. Then, combine these drawn and painted objects with collaged images, text, cartoons, muted tones, and designed shapes, and Stephen's small paintings start to become a world of their own. Out of these montages, moods are provoked and new stories unfold.

Hmm, I would probably rather go to Secluded Alley Works.

Opening Reception: Saturday, January 3, 2004, 7:00-11:00 P.M.
Runs: Thursday, January 1, 2004 - Saturday, January 31, 2004

CONTRA NATURUM – Unnatural Nature @ SAW

'Contra Naturum' is a Latin phrase meaning against nature, or unnatural:

Featuring work by artists Eve Cohen, Kamala Dolphin-Kingsley, Mandy Greer, Andrea Rogalski, Taylor Vogland Dreiling and Jennifer Zwick. Each artist's work, using a variety of strategies, toys with the idea of what natural and unnatural are perceived to be, how our human brains like to separate things into those two neat categories, and whether or not they really exist.

Eve works in Fremont and lives in my neighborhood. Last week I saw her waiting for the bus and I offered her a ride to Fremont. She was telling me about this show but unfortunately I won't be able to make it to the opening:

Eve Cohen creates creatures clearly from a natural world all her own making, meticulously crafted from spent firecrackers, toilet tissue, old photos, bark, and household waste. Flaunting their distinctively human naughty parts with a coy awareness of their transgression, these creatures take on a unique identity and poke fun at the human ambivalence towards our sexual organs.

Artist's reception: Friday, January 2nd, 7 - 11 pm

14/48 @ Conworks

14/48 stands for 14 plays in 48 hours and is probably "the world’s quickest theater festival". It's pretty crazy and I would go - if I was in Seattle the next two weekends.
Here is the 14/48 Timeline

Thursday night
Entire group assembles for beers, welcome and introduction. The participants each write down an idea for a loose theme with which to keep the writers honest and to give a bit of cohesion to the night’s performances. One of these themes is drawn at random from a hat.
Writers draw a slip of paper giving them the number and gender of actors for whom they’ll be writing. They go home to write one ten-minute play apiece on the selected theme.

Friday Morning
Writers arrive with their script. Directors randomly draw a script and have one hour to read it and discuss with the writer. Directors randomly draw names of musicians, designers, and actors. The rest of the crew arrives, are given a copy of their script, and meet their director and writer. The groups read through the play, then disperse to separate spaces within Consolidated’s facility to rehearse and produce their shows. Writers are free to spend three hours with the director and cast during rehearsals (until noon), then are required to leave the process for the rest of the day.

Friday Evening
Each show is given limited time for tech, dress rehearsal, and lighting cues. Musicians set up and rehearse. Visual artists install their pieces. Shows start at 8:00 and 10:30.

Midnight:
Curtain call. Applause. Producers draw the next night’s theme in front of the audience, from audience suggestions. Writers once more draw a slip of paper informing them of the number and gender of the actors for the next day’s play, and return home to write.

Saturday
The process repeats on Saturday. Everything is assigned randomly, so each writer writes for a different number of people and each director works with different actors and writers.

When I went last year the theme was "Full Frontal Nudity" and the plays were actually pretty amusing. I was actually volunteering at Conworks that evening and had the chance to watch the whole process closely. Backstage actors were practicing their lines or sleeping in quite corners. I don't know if Conworks is looking for volunteers this weekend. But I can definitely recommend volunteering for Conworks. You'll get to see 14/48 for free and you'll see the whole event from a new perspective.
