Events for 1/9 to 1/14/2004

Party Volcano's inbox looks depressing. There are only few events that are worth mentioning. This time around the year there is usually some Night of the Living Elvis event at the Croc. But this year seems to be an exception. The Stranger is pointing out Cineoke @ Rendezvous on Monday, which I don't think will be that great. My favorite this week are the Soil opening and the Paula Fletcher Trunk Show.

As you might know I am writing this week's edition from Hamburg in Germany. It's pretty cold here but I have heard that it has snowed a lot in Seattle the last couple of days too. This weekend I will dive into Hamburg's nightlife and will probably write up a little Cold Lava report about my adventures.

14/48, the world’s quickest theater festival™ is back! The World’s Quickest Theater Festival—fourteen plays conceived, written, designed, scored, rehearsed, and performed in forty-eight hours—debuted November 1997 in Seattle to praise from audiences, performers, and critics. The combination of deadline, talent, speed, nerves, and genius inspiration served to strip away the creative inhibitions from more traditional theater, proving that, contrary to popular opinion, sometimes the first idea is the best.

14/48 redefines the idea of extemporaneous, experimental theater. Seven playwrights assemble on Thursday night to write seven original ten-minute plays. Friday morning the playwrights each randomly give their plays to one of seven directors who, with a randomly drawn composer, a visual artist, and a combined cast of thirty-five actors, have the remainder of that day to produce, rehearse, design, tech, and dress rehearse their pieces. ! Friday night all seven plays are presented to an audience back-to-back. The playwrights reconvene Friday night to write seven more pieces and the process repeats, each actor working with a new director, new composer, new designer, all with a new play from a different writer.

"Of course it’s entirely impossible for artists to work like this—which is a really good reason for them to do so. It was some of the most fun I’ve ever had in the theater." —Seattle Weekly

MIGUEL MIGS & LISA SHAW
(Naked Music / Astralwerk - SF / NYC)

with residents:
WESLEY HOLMES & KEN WALLACE

Captured from this week's issue of 'The Stranger'
MIGUEL MIGS / LISA SHAW
If you're down with Naked Music's brand of slick, lubricious house production, you'll want to put your life on hold for Miguel Migs' appearance here, Migs (real name: Miguel Steward; aliases Petalpusher and Li'sha) is perhaps Naked's foremost ambassador for its laid-back, airbrushed approach of 4/4 dance music. (Naked artist Stuart Patterson's luscious, colorful, cheesecake graphics also deserve much credit for the label's high profile.) You can bet your lethargic, post-holiday ass Migs and wildly in-demand dive Lisa Shaw will bring some much-needed mellow, sunshiny Cali vibes to our city's sunless winter. -- Dave Segal

Look forward to see you there....

Cheers!
Fortune Kiki

Here are imaginary Dana's recommendations for this week:

Friday 1/9

I am likely tragically unable to go out on Friday night as I have a parental unit with an aversion to loud music and smoky bars coming to town. Therefore it's a moral IMPERATIVE that each of you go see a show, as the town is literally teaming over with great tunes!

My top pick would be the Turns Ons CD release party at the Crocodile -- not only because the Turns Ons are white hot like fire, but also because the opening band The Slender Means sent us the greatest demo CD we've heard to date - full of evocative melodies, sophisticated song-writing, and deep dark juice vocals. Damnit I wanna go to that show!!

{The full bill: The Turn Ons {album release}/Melody Unit/Blessed Light/Slender Means, Crocodile}

I also have warm fuzzy feelings for some Ballard shows tonight:
The Believers/An American Starlet {album release}/Love Hotel, at the Tractor

An early {7p} singer-songwriter showcase at the Sunset with Ian Moore and Steve Turner.

Sunday 1/11

Another great Crocodile lineup: IMA Robot with Kuma and Infomatik. I've heard IMA Robot are crazy killer live. Kuma always impress me with their indulgently gorgeous staging and costumes, as well as their dramatic Siouxsie Sioux-meets-Curve sound (http://www.threeimaginarygirls.com/hearSAY82603kuma.asp). Infomatik tops our list of bands we must check out in early 2004. Beats watching Sex and the City (or at least there's TIVO for that!)
