Events for 1/7 to 1/13/2005

Hope you had relaxing holidays. As mentioned before I spent mine in Jackson Hole. It’s a great place but I was mildly disappointed when I learned that Wyoming is not far enough in the South for snake-handling ceremonies. I guess I have to wait until the talented Pastor Caleb (Big-Wheel-Bingo) will find interest in doing snake-handlings here in Seattle. I would go and pay for it to see him handling snakes!

Lots of Tsunami benefits this week. There is also the 5th annual Drunk Puppet Nite at the Re-bar starting on 1/13. But I couldn’t find any details about it.

Celebration of Fire @ Café Luna (Vashon Island)

I am not the biggest fan of fire performances. Taking photos of them seems even more redundant. On the other hand these are photos taken by Michelle Bates, who runs an art email list that I find useful. Notice also the opening will be on Vashon Island - a place in the Northwest that has become famous for having the lowest vaccination rates in the United States. So please leave your small-pocks infested blankets at home!

Preview of bodyBODY @ Empty Space Theatre

Amanda writes:

Happy New Year, Party Volcano!!

I want to let you all know about the second production of bodyBODY, of which I am co-creator. New work from my “This Is Beautiful” project will exhibit along with work from the other 2 fabulous females creators, an original dark comedy by Vanessa McGrady and interviews/documentary by Kathlyn Albright. All works honor women's innate beauty. The last production at Theatre Off Jackson was consistently sold out with standing room only. Check out: http://www.bodybodyproject.com for more information. Look for coverage about us in the January issues of Seattle Magazine < http://www.seattlemag.com/spotlight.asp>, Colors Northwest and Seattle Women Magazine!

The gala opening is this Saturday night and there are about 15 tickets left. Also, Friday is a pay-what-you-can night, and all proceeds will go to the American Red Cross’ relief efforts to help those affected by the deadly tsunami in South Asia.

See you there,
Amanda

They have added a pay-what-you-will preview for 8 p.m. Friday, January 7. Tickets available cash/check at the door only. All proceeds benefit the Red Cross' relief efforts for tsunami victims. Seattle Spin writes:

Human Interest: Body Body Project, Jan 8th, $25, an exploration of women's body issues. Don't let the media tell you what sexy is. Celebrate femininity in all its different forms at this event. For the ladies, plenty of sisterhood in action; for the guys, better understanding of the challenges facing the other gender in our image saturated society.

14/48 @ ConWorks

Jon writes:

OK.

Here we go again.

For the newbies and for those of you who have come to this event for years:

14/48 is this weekend! I will be performing Friday and Saturday. 8pm and 10pm both nights. Different show each night.

14 plays written, directed, memorized, staged, rehearsed, costumed and performed in 48 hours. It's a freakin' BLAST.

Smooches,

Jon

The official press release says:

14/48, the world’s quickest theater festival™ is back! The World’s Quickest Theater
Festival—fourteen plays conceived, written, designed, scored, rehearsed, and performed in
forty-eight hours—debuted November 1997 in Seattle to praise from audiences, performers, and
critics. The combination of deadline, talent, speed, nerves, and genius inspiration served to
strip away the creative inhibitions from more traditional theater, proving that, contrary to popular
opinion, sometimes the first idea is the best.
14/48 redefines the idea of extemporaneous, experimental theater. Seven playwrights
assemble on Thursday night to write seven original ten-minute plays. Friday morning the
playwrights each randomly give their plays to one of seven directors who, with a randomly
drawn composer, a visual artist, and a combined cast of thirty-five actors, have the remainder
of that day to produce, rehearse, design, tech, and dress rehearse their pieces. Friday night
all seven plays are presented to an audience back-to-back. The playwrights reconvene Friday
night to write seven more pieces and the process repeats, each actor working with a new
director, new composer, new designer, all with a new play from a different writer.

"The Fence" by Rebecca A. Kandel @ Retail Therapy

Rebecca A. Kandel is a native of New York and a graduate from Hampshire College and the Masters program at the California Institute of the Arts. She has been working in the area of immigration and border issues for several years with projects including the Zapatista movement in Chiapas, Mexico and deported gang members in El Salvador.

In her work she reaches beyond photojournalism and documentary into an anthropological exploration of a group, a place or a circumstance. Her subject is explored through its relationship to the community around it and how it is affected by and affects that larger world. The only think that I asked of the viewer is that they open their minds in order that they may in some way expand or change them.

Her most recent project, Perspectives on the Borer / Perspectivas en la Frontera, is a portrait of the fence that divides the United States and Mexico. It shows the structure as seen through those who come into contact with it on a daily basis. Where many see the fence as a place of constant motion, which one simply passes by, it is also a destination, a pivotal point in transition, and a staging ground for political points of contention. This project strives to push the viewers beyond preconceived notions that they may see the fence as a more dynamic and multi-dimensional space.

Letters to the Editor

(For those of you that don’t know Katie Kurtz: she is a former CoCA and SPACE director and has been an important curator for many shows here in Seattle. She also writes about art for the Stranger after Emily Hall left last year.)

Being critical versus writing criticism

Hey PV,

As one of what, five? and just an occasional art "critic" here in Seattle, I
have to put my two cents in on criticism vs. critique vs. art listings.
(Plus I know Rick Klu and wonder if he would ever say to me, "Katie, you
seldom attempt experimental photography, painting, or performance art, and
yet you write about it, why is that?" He probably will now, though...)

I actually have attempted all of the above at some point or another but you
know what? I suck at making art. But what I don't suck at is making art
happen (aka "arts administration"), thinking about art, talking about art,
and writing about art. And beyond just not sucking at it, I love it. And for
all my years of arts adminstrating and being in the community and writing
about it, I can't tell you how many times I've been asked if I'm an artist.
I think it's about time to start debunking that shit.

Artists make art. And there is a world of people - from curators to
fundraisers to writers to interns to volunteers to gallerists to nonprofit
directors to volunteer boards- thousands, hell, millions of people who work
their asses off to make that possible. And somehow, we end up being the bad
guys. Seattle is small and because of its smallness, unfortunately, there's
a finite number of writers. Believe me, I wish there were more so those of
who do do it (wherever, however, whenever we can - the options are finite,
too) don't have to bear the brunt of every omission, every criticism, every
wrong listing. We all know opinions are like assholes but since there's few
options to put opinions out there and few people willing to risk being
opinionated (because Seattle is small and we all know each other), any bad
opinion automatically makes someone an asshole. Had we more options, artists
would have the advantage of considering ! three reviews of their work instead
of just one. Taken together, the artist would be better able to consider
whether or not to keep their day job or know they were on the right
track.

Also, there's a fine line between being critical and writing criticism.
Being critical is being mean and not offering specifics as to why a work
failed. Writing criticism is constructive and offers artists a new way to
think about their work, to make it better, to gain an audience. And the most
effective way anyone can be supportive is to say something is crap when it's
crap and spare all of us the awkwardness of "supporting" something we
secretly hate.

Before closing, a quick plug: One of my goals is to get the swirl of arts
writing out of the Seattle and out to the rest of the world. So I'm starting
a blog. I'll send the link once it's up. And I'm doing it on my own time,
for free, like Party Volcano -- a labor of love to promote compelling,
wonderful, exciting Seattle art and encourage more of it.

So, keep up the good work, PV!

Yours critically,
Katie Kurtz

Thanks for your feedback! I went to your blog "handgrenade" (http://www.drmenlo.com/handgrenadier/) and checked it out. I like it! I am glad you mention things like "Which Mark Ryden painting are you?" (http://quizilla.com/users/eepoporkahah/quizzes/Which%20Mark%20Ryden%20Painting%20Are%20You%3F).

RE: 1500th reader

You may have me wrong... I would still like to be your 1500th reader!
Anyway, I know about the shitty art in this town (too bad more people don't
realize this!). We are all human beings and I guess it just caught me in the
wrong mood... I will try not to be so uppity about your opinion. Actually it
might be nice to meet you sometime, since you have posted many events about
what I do or the things I have been involved in. Keep up the good work... If
you want to remove me from your list that's fine, but you don't have to...

Thanks
Sincerely,
Rick Klu

Do you still sign your art pieces (that our PV Lab technicians would confidently label as "underground craft") with 333? In 2001 you explained that "333" refers to the half-ass version of the Anti-Christ (666/2 = 333).

You might remember my response: "Totally half-ass!"

Welcome back to Party Volcano!

Don Volcano

RE: Old Dad Freud's jokes.

Dear Don Volcano,

Just you telling old Dad Freud's jokes? I remember when you did argue against Him in your former times as student of psychology. Looking for a more (today we would call it political correct way) smart way to understand the world.

No more looking for PC? Come back to Mum and Dad and all the hot stuff?
Nothing against that! But it was rather a modern technique of discussion, wasn't it?

Punk's not dead,

The Attorney

Dear Attorney,

I guess you can’t really escape your past. Few people know that I have a Master in Psychology and you seem to be one of them. In these days I don’t want to have to do anything with Psychology anymore. Sometimes those neglected parts of my history start to itch even though they shouldn’t - like your left arm that you recently chopped off with your new axe your aunt gave you for Christmas, because you thought The Evil was hiding in it.

Anyways, my limited knowledge about Freud’s theory still comes in handy when talking about irrationality and incongruent behavior. But I wouldn’t read too much into my writings.

Sometimes a cigar is only a cigar.

Best regards,

Don Volcano.
