Events for 1/14 to 1/20/2005

This week I’ve got some off-the-track events for you. The weirdest one is probably "First Brides" Storytelling Event at Goodwill's Memory Lane Museum. I did not list Glitzkrieg Burlesque (1/15 @ Doc Maynards, $15) and The Fetish fashion show at Club Noc Noc (1/15, $10) because they deserve more time than I have this week, that is, for me to poop on! Same with RDB (Rhythm Dhol & Bass) on 1/15 @ ARISTOCRATS. That is a Bollywood event and part of the “Tsunami Relief Month”. Let’s hope the local Bollywood Mafia will not extend this project to a Tsunami Relief Year or even worse: Bollywood Tsunami Relief Decade.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY CONRAD CHAVEZ @ Blue Door Gallery

Conrad writes:

Hi everyone,

I've got a show going up at the Blue Door Gallery this week. The gallery's announcement is below. The theme this time is shadows. Lots of interesting shadows. Some abstract, some quite recognizable.

The gallery is on the corner of 80th and Linden Ave N, which is about a block west of Aurora Avenue. If you're southbound on Aurora turn right on Linden, and if you're northbound turn left on Linden. Real close to my house, in other words.

The opening is Friday from 7-9 pm, hope to see you there!

The gallery is also open on weekends, see below for more details.

"FRESH OFF THE BOAT": A FASHION SHOW @ M.E.& Co

I like this one. For those of you, who don't know: Marianne Goldin is DJ Superjew.

"FRESH OFF THE BOAT": A FASHION SHOW

SEATTLE, WA - FRIDAY, JANUARY 14, 2005

Specialty boutique M.E. & Co. is showcasing Fall/Winter 2004-05 looks
via collaboration between proprietor, Marjan Ehsani; and two local
women's wear designers, Marianne Goldin and Diana Mucci. The
presentation is choreographed by Kirstin Cooper and performed by
dancers from the Westlake Dance Studio.

In a city fueled by the contributions of its immigrant community, one
of its members wishes to reconnect with the classic image of old-world
refinement and style as it is drawn through the sieve of cultural
diasporas. Two other designers, Marianne Goldin and Diana Mucci, add
to the collaboration through their respective love for
elegantly-wrought silhouettes and vintage detailing. The tableau
vivant is brought to life by the articulation of choreographer Kirstin
Cooper's dancers and other-worldly settings of the concept boutique.

- Marjan Ehsani: Proprietor and manager, M.E. & Co Boutique and Salon
since August, 2003. A noted local businesswoman and up-and-comer.
- Marianne Goldin: Women's wear and accessory design; presenting tops,
bandeaux, and brochettes. Newest pieces feature silk origami with
couture-grade hand finishing.
- Diana Mucci: Fine knitwear; presenting scarves, gloves, cloche caps.
Gossamer-light pieces show attention to subtlety of medium and refined
choice of color.

Chimpo CD Release Party @ Nectar

Pierre writes:

Just a reminder that tonight at Nectar (in Fremont, 412 N. 36th St ), Vena Cava Records and Soul Kitchen Studios are proud to celebrate the self-titled debut release of “Chimpo”.

“Drawing on the vocabulary of musical pioneers like Frank Zappa, Parliment Funkadelic, Wilco, Herbie Hancock, The Meters, MMW, Beck, Meshell N'degeocello, Soulive, D'Angelo, Freddie Hubbard, Stevie Wonder, Cachao, Square Pusher, The Roots and many many others, Chimpo effortlessly blends Modern Trance, Drum & Bass, and Old School Funk and Soul with the emphasis on groove that contains a superb sense of improvisation.”

Also on the bill is Portland electronica act Solovox.

“Electronica has a new hero: SOLOVOX. Producer/Performer Carlton Tietze is a keyboard wizard. Surrounded by new and vintage synthesizers, he creates original, funky and powerful music right in front of your eyes. Merging the sound of Herbie Hancock and the electro power of The Chemical Brothers into his own stew, listeners are being treated to a unique and extremely melodic sound almost unheard of in today's electronic world. “

So come out, drink, dance and celebrate with us. Please forward to all who might be interested.

National Acrobats of Taiwan @ Benaroya Hall

This is one of my faviorites for this week. Seattle Spin writes:

National Acrobats of Taiwan, Jan 16th, $17+. Every time you see acrobats, it's easy to gasp at their great balancing acts, thinking for a split second that something or someone is going to fall down, at least once. Yet, it never happens. And you thought balancing the broom on the end of your fingertips as a kid was a big deal.

More information can be found at the Seattle Symphony site:

Using ordinary household props—tables, chairs, pots, stools—the National Acrobats of Taiwan make their Benaroya Hall debut in this program of daring-do and feats of extraordinary physical dexterity that will leave you breathless with amazement. They have toured the world as the Republic of China’s national acrobatic troupe.

You can see plenty of amazing acrobatic magic when the National Acrobats of Taiwan, R.O.C., roll into town. The 35-member company performs a wide variety of acts, including dance, contortion, trapeze and other feats of mobility, dexterity and balance. The performers work their magic around everyday objects, setting plates spinning on poles, stacking chairs upon chairs and juggling desks, ladders and bamboo -- and don't forget the fire and knives.

The company builds on millennia of tradition, Chinese folk art and variety performances dating back to the Han Dynasty (206 BC to 240 AD). Today's performers come out of the Fu Hsing Academy, which opened in 1957, and became the Taiwanese national academy for training traditional artists in 1968. The company last performed widely in the United States and Canada in 1998. -- Douglas Levin

RECORD 2005 Alumni Exhibition @ Cornish

I am sure you haven't heard of this one:

RECORD

2005 Alumni Exhibition, Art Department

January 20-February 24, 2005
Opening Reception: Thursday, January 20, 5-7pm
A document often informs us as to what is real and often provides a record by which to interpret an event. Cornish College’s 2005 Alumni Show, RECORD, is focused on artists who engage with documents, originals or the process of documentation in their work.

RECORD seeks to reveal the varied layers of truth discovered while constructing or reconstructing events, memories and myths. Referencing an original event within a work provides an opportunity to look closer at the many ways we choose to preserve the past and decipher truth. Intentional or unintentional transgressions, mythological storytelling, misspoken truths and reality television are just some of the ways in which our culture is constantly producing new versions of the real.

While Neal Bashor engages the age-old trickery of trompe l'oeil, James Schaffer enlists satellite images and abstract foregrounds to place the viewer in uncomfortably familiar places. “I painted the map-like abstracts intuitively after a protracted study of maps and their language and a theoretical and critical study of globalization,” Schaffer states. “At the forefront were issues of boundary and questions about rupture, center/periphery, sovereignty, and empire.”
Rhonda Dee ventures far beneath the surface of a family home video in order to reveal a Truth that nobody else is willing to witness. And Christine Sandifur utilizes pages from her maternal grandmother’s diary in an effort to maintain their importance as time speeds up. “This is a tribute to her record keeping. My concept was to combine her distinctive handwriting with my drawings, and print them as etchings. In the beginning I was thinking of the shape the writing makes, but as I read ea! ch entry, the content has taken on importance – an account of daily life as seen through the eyes of a small town housewife, mother of 3, grandmother of 7, and great grandmother of 15.”

Drunk Puppet Nite @ Re-bar

Last week I didn't have the details. In the meantime I've got an email about it. This Thursday it's pay-what-you-can day:

Monkey Wrench Puppet Lab presents Drunk Puppet Nite #5!

Ladies and gentlemen, it's the 5th Drunk Puppet Nite!

Once again, Monkey Wrench Puppet Lab is hosting Drunk Puppet Nite at
Seattle's Re-Bar. Drunk Puppet Nite is an evening of puppetry from
beyond the pale; a chance for Seattle’s best, and most notorious,
puppeteers to expose their ids in public. We dare to enter the nether
realms of puppetry. Drunk Puppet Nite is subversive; it’s ugly, it’s
ridiculous, it’s sublime, it’s controversial, it’s lovely, it’s
righteously political, it’s literary.

The truth is, no one knows what to expect from Drunk Puppet Nite. Over
these three weekends, our puppeteers have no boundaries. Performers
include Clay Martin; Matt Fontaine & Tamara Paris; Andrew Kim; members
of Circus Contraption, Cry of the Rooster, Islewilde, Tango Twins, Tears
of Joy; Thistle Theater and all of your Monkey Wrench favorites! No two
evenings are the same.

Monkey Wrench is a cluster of Seattle area puppeteers who are working to
expand the public’s definition of puppetry by bringing their blend of
the surprising, the bizarre and the artistically excellent to audiences
around the Puget Sound. Monkey Wrench is the group responsible for
Frankenocchio, The Mermaid who Broke my F*cking Heart, Halfpenny Opera
and the upcoming Dracula.
