The Vagina Monologues

Adana writes:

Hello friends,

I'm putting on a little ol' show you may have heard of. It's called The Vagina Monologues. The show is a fundraiser for CARA (Communities Against Rape and Abuse) and omen's Freedom Center. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door. You can purchase tickets from the lovely Miss Wazhma at Retail Therapy (905 E. Pike).

Please feel free to forward this invite to whoever you like. I'd LOVE to sell out! The show is running for 3 days. February 13th and 14th it's at 7:30pm, and February 15th at 2:30pm. Rumor has it that some conservative student groups from my campus will be protesting opening night (it IS a Catholic school), which should add a little spice to the evening.

We've got a lovely cast, a brilliant director, and the set design should be smashing. And if that isn't enough incentive, you just might see yours truly up on stage, wielding a riding crop, clad entirely in vinyl!

Campion Ballroom, 914 E. Jefferson St., Seattle.

TIG's Silly Love Songs Karaoke Bash @ Croc

The Three Imaginary Girls are hosting a fabulous karaoke party. I am going!

KARAOKE! Our Friday the 13th Silly Love Songs Karaoke Bash is in one week, so start preparing those love dedications and dirges! Come out, sing, and hear members of your favorite bands karaoke love songs, including members of Dolour, In Praise of Folly, the Long Winters, the Electric Kisses, the Lashes, the Catch, and tons more: www.ThreeImaginaryGirls.com/SillyLoveSongs.asp

The evening will feature love song karaoke performances by local indie-musicians {including the Long Winters, the Turn Ons, Ms. Led, the Lashes, Dolour, An American Starlet, Love Hotel, the Catch, Black Nite Crash, Radio Nationals, Water Kill the Sun, Electric Kisses, and In Praise of Folly}.

And those with a record contract aren’t the Only ones invited to profess their love {or lack thereof} on the Crocodile Café’s stage. All attendees are invited to participate. Whether love-lorn or beloved, attendees are in for more treats than a bag of Necco candy hearts!

The happily married Sean Nelson of The Long Winters has promised to karaoke, "...two nakedly prostrated lover-to-beloved love songs, which will nonetheless be dirge-like because of the bittersweet nature of all love, which is sacrifice."

And poor single Ben Lashes of The Lashes: his search for Ms. Right has been met with obstacles and restraining orders. But that hasn't stopped him. He has promised to karaoke a Cure song because, "...girls love the Cure." He’s hopeful he will find a girlfriend at the party when star-stuck Cure-fan females recognize that he and Robert Smith share a haircut.

Need more reason to attend? Shane Tutmarc from Dolour intends to perform a love dirge. "I sing for the broken-hearted!" he proclaimed.

Imaginary girl Dana explains, "We're encouraging love duets, dedications, and dirges, because really — how often does the day before Valentine's Day fall on Friday the 13th? We couldn't pass up that opportunity."

"Who knows, it could turn into an indie-rock night of speed dating AND
replace those expensive Valentine’s Day dinners that so many couples
fall prey to," said imaginary girl Liz.

"We hope someone gets engaged onstage that night," said imaginary girl
Char. "That would rock."

WHAT: "Silly Love Songs" Friday the 13th Karaoke Bash!
WHERE: Crocodile Café, 2200 2nd Ave.
WHEN: Friday, February 13, 2004. Doors open 8p. Open Karaoke immediately
thereafter.
COST: $7. Advance tickets available online through Ticketweb

Valentine's Eve at the Lava Lounge

Cissy writes:

Dear party volcano,

here's a party not to be missed...mine!
On Friday, February 13th I am transforming the Lava Lounge into a lounge of love....an extraordinary night of fun in part to celebrate the Lava's new hard liquor license and mostly to celebrate that crazy little thing called love...

This is a lovely idea. I am glad I can tell you about it:

Hello sweethearts!

On Friday, February 13th I am having a kick-ass-liquored-love-fest down at the Lounge of Love (aka Lava Lounge) in romantic Belltown. To celebrate the Lava's new hard liquor license and mostly to celebrate that crazy little thing called love.....

A sampling of the events:

the Little White Chapel of Hot Lava Love will offer two ordained ministers to marry off anybody willing/wanting (if you're serious... it takes about fifty-four bucks and three full days for the paperwork to be valid from the courthouse). Get married on friday the 13th or on Valentine's after midnight.......symbolic marriages will happily be performed as well...

Free kissing booth with purchase of any Valentine's drink specials...(champagne and chambord, raspberry beer and slutty redheads for $3/$4)...

Pulsating beats by the DJ Reverand Bob with HoneyLove......
Get your groove on with the fabulous Lushy...love ! sounds of tomorrow...tonight.
Great prizes for the best in red and for favorite kissing couple....
And the best thing..(other than the crafty hearts I'm making).... it's free !

The lovin' starts at 9PM.
I hope to see you all there!!!

cissy.

I will definitely swing by in one of the karaoke breaks.

Lava Lounge in Belltown.

Forgive Me Friday @ Luscious Studio

I ran into Sir Pol the other day and he said he would be the trusted bartender on "Forgive Me Friday". He had great ideas for drink specials. For example: Bring your divorce lawyer and get divorced and your lawyer will get free drinks all night! The other specials were even more obscure - so obscure that I forgot them.

If you want to experience the dark side of Valentine's Day your place has to be at Luscious Studio:

a friday-the-thirteenth-v.-valentine's-day event featuring

live music from:

filastine
free jail
infernal noise brigade
kisskisskiss
ophelia and the great idea
the new death show

live art from:

known and unknown local artists

a kissing booth

much more...

Emiliy from the Stranger has obviously been to some of the parties at Luscious:

We thought Luscious gave up, but they're back. They're a leetle beet mysterious about what kind of "live" art they're showing along with all the music and performance (which includes the tireless Infernal Noise Brigade), but the shows have been nuts and fun in the past, so we'll include them anyway.

if you like playgroup ... soulwax... output... prince... rick james.... punk/disco/funk.... you... must ...check... out .... CHROMEO!

CHROMEO: Crossing the Gaza Strip of sexxx jams.
Chromeo is Pee Thug and Dave 1: best friends since their Montreal adolescence, virtuoso musicians, walking hip hop encyclopedias, and the only successful Arab/Jew partnership since the dawn of human culture.

As Chromeo, they fuse their penchants for two sorely missed musical genres into a wholly new thing. Pee, the brown-skinned Quebecois street tough, brings analog synth basslines and drum machine wizardry à la Cameo and Prince. Dave, the Semitic bookworm (currently earning his Ph.D. in French Lit at Columbia), contributes melodic tales of urban romance. Their blend of catchy song structures, memorable hooks, and twirling guitar solos conjure up images of either a sophisticated, thugged-out Hall & Oates, or the subconscious meeting of Daft Punk and N.E.R.D. Bonnie Vs. Clyde / St. Valentine's Day Massacre

This will be the biggest V-Day party. It is actually two parties in one: Flight to Mars with their St. Valentine's Day Massacre, and Bonnie Vs. Clyde, A Valentine's Drag Ball Mass:ive.

F2M and Mass:ive Progressive Party
Flight to Mars and Mass:ive are proud to bring you a weekend of guns, garters, and gangsters, of dames and drinks, and of course dancing and drag. A progressive party in 2 locations!

On February 14, 1929, Al Capone ordered a hit on his rival, Bugs Moran. He sent Machine Gun McGurn to a Chicago warehouse where Moran would be having a meeting. They lined up seven of Moran's men against a brick wall and shot them with a tommy gun. Moran arrived late, smelled trouble, and avoided being killed. The massacre triggered the climax of the mobster era, almost simultaneous with the crashing end of the Roaring 20s.

Flight to Mars presents The St. Valentine's Day Massacre
http://www.flight2mars.com/massacre/

Break out your fedoras, pinstripes, and flapper dresses for a new Flight to Mars party. This event will behold the era of the Roaring 20s in music, dance, and many other authentic representations. F2M will be at About the Music, 6010 Airport Way S. in Georgetown.

Bonnie Vs. Clyde, A Valentine's Drag Ball Mass:ive
http://massive.twiinster.com/mass9.htm

Our first drag ball last year proved to be a resounding success, with a hair shy of 200 burners attending. Who would have imagined burners like dressing in drag? And now our second annual is upon us, this Valentine's day. The theme is 1930's gangster, complete with Tommy guns and flapper dresses. Prepare for the best, and grab your garters! Ladies grab your guns, gentlemen grab your garters!

Mass:ive will be at Lo-Fi Studios 429B East Lake Avenue East, on the corner of Eastlake and Republican

Two Locations! Twice The Fun!

Now for the amazing news: Either ticket is good for BOTH events! And furthermore, we will have a shuttle service* between the two. (*Shuttle service is $2 each way, and does not guarantee you a ride back) First shuttle leaves SVDM at 10:30pm Last shuttle leaves BvC at 2:00am

Also---CAPACITY IS LIMITED FOR BOTH EVENTS! BUY PRESALE!

"420" @ Rendezvous Jewelbox Theater

This is Rob's second show this month:

"420" - 420 short films (1 - 30 seconds each) shot on location in
seattle, berlin, prague, amsterdam, sunbury, and elsewhere. A rare
chance to see these films on the big screen. Door opens at 7, film
starts promptly at 8. Approx. running time: 90 minutes. $5.

The movies are funny and interesting. I saw them at Steven Stone's birthday party at the VIP room. Rob showed me how he did it. His little digital camera allows him to record short clips up to 10 seconds. I don't know how long he has been making those random clips. But eventually he got enough of them to stitch them togother for a complete movie.

Prospettiva Plural XI - tenor madness @ COCA

Do you care for some autistic Jazz on a Sunday afternoon?

Here you go:

Prospettiva Plural XI - tenor madness
Sunday February 15
Featuring 3 30-minute solo performances on the tenor saxophone by:

John Gross (Portland)
Greg Sinibaldi (Seattle)
Kelvin Pittman (Portland)

Prospettiva Plural is a monthly series of music that presents diverse
perspectives and approaches to performing on a single given instrument
at each concert. Practitioners of improvised and composed music working
from jazz, new music, and improvised music backgrounds are billed
alongside each other, encouraging a dialogue between these areas of
music-making. Prospettiva Plural takes place every third Sunday at CoCA.

JOHN GROSS
John's playing has been described as: "...a phenomena of knowledge and
experience...he's a survivor and one of the most meaningful players on
the scene, he plays his life on the horn." T. Price, Saxophone Journal,
May/June 1994

GREG SINIBALDI
As a leader, Mr. Sinibaldi performs with his improvisatory group, Frieze
of Life. The music of Frieze of life ranges from composed, intricate
counterpoint to unbridled expressionist improvisation. They flawlessly
combine improvisation and composition, creating a refreshing sound.
Their improvisations sparkle with intelligence and verve.

KELVIN PITTMAN
His past musical projects include Owl in Daylight, super unity, and the
Bay area's Control R Workshop. Mr. Pittman also maintains an ongoing
dialog with Tim Bradley, sound theorist.

FUTURE SOUL @ The Baltic Room

J-Justice writes:

Hey PV, this Sunday is a great event for those love some latin vibes in their dance music. Plus it's a 3-day weekend for some folks! Please post this if you can.

Thanks. XOXO-

J-Justice

SunTzu Sound presents:

A special edition of FUTURE SOUL for lovers of latin vibes featuring special guest:

JOHN BELTRAN - Ubiquity Records - Peacefrog - Detroit

THIS SUNDAY FEBRUARY 15th

John Beltran used to be big in the techno scene working with Carl Craig and other hit makers. A few years ago he got in touch with his latin roots, signed to Ubiquity Records and started churning out some excellent Latin and Brazillian fueled funk. His latest single, Candela, is burning up dancefloors worldwide. "In Full Color", his new album, was recorded partly in Puerto Rico where he worked with a whole crew of percussionists and singers. Don't miss John Beltran's first Seattle appearance!

Get a copy of John Beltran's new CD "In Full Color" at the show before
it hits the shops!

To add to the madness, we'll have extra percussionists and singers performing all night.

Momma Don't Hurt Me so Bad

Jesse writes:

Hi there...

Not so much a party, but certainly an experience... It would be most appreciated if you would include it!

Show Synopsis from Website:
Momma Don't Hurt Me So Bad, the musical comedy, is a modern fairy tale
set in an S&M dungeon. This rags to diapers story includes a wonderful
score, original plot, and a full pallet of gender bent characters who
just want to be loved. Come join us for a hilarious evening of song,
dance, and a little spanking!

I went to their web site. Sorry, but it looks terrible. This doesn't look it'll be worth $20. But that's only my opinion.

Cold Lava

New Directions in Alcohol Consumption: Whistler (Canada, BC). Addendum.

Apparently there is more to say about Whistler's night life - but not a whole lot. One email pointed out that a "good ratio" of guys to girls in a Whistler bar is about 5-1, 10-1 would be the norm. Gates also adds:

My friend Lorde Oake says you forgot one of the bars up there, eh. Tommy Africa's. He says you can find 17 year olds break dance fighting there. And GoGo dancers on podiums. I imagine staff in khaki Banana Republic outfits and pith helmets swinging from vines.

Most overheard line: "Look - they're BREAK DANCE FIGHTING"

Candyland (2/6/2004)

Candyland was one of the private parties I wasn't sure I was allowed to write about. The guests were asked to dress as kids:

"When you're a kid, all you ever think about is what you're gonna be when you grow up. Now that we've grown, imagine what you would be if you were a kid again...just for one night."

I was considering three costume themes for a party that was about kids: Michael Jackson, priest, or kid. I knew I would get in trouble if I showed up as a priest again and I didn’t know where I would get a fake nose. So I dressed up as a kid - which was so unexpected that Catwoman said she would write a Cold Lava report about it:

As promised, here's my cold lava report on your outfit at Candyland!

Believe it or not, our own Party Volcano Man Bernd was spotted at Candyland last Friday looking dangerously like an American, sporting a red cap, white T-shirt with bright colors on it, and jeans. This, frankly, I found shocking. Gone were all traces of Hamburg, no black, no priest outfit, nothing. I think he may have even been dancing....

Perhaps, it is not too late to do an intervention!

yours, catwoman

Let me reply by quoting one of the voices in my head:

Liebe Catwoman,

It had been a very busy week here in Seattle. Juergen von Keitel's exhibit "Scabs On Canvas" opened at the Schussel Calle, and the Gertrude Brompf troupe previewed their performance in wax at the Theater of Unhappiness. But I still somehow managed to come up with a disturbing costume for Candyland - an oversized Ren & Stimpy T-Shirt with a reversed baseball cap.

By seemingly embracing the clichés of the West, I wanted to underscore its excruciating banality. But all my countercultural efforts were ignored or misunderstood. It is now that I am realizing that my costume turned into an altar of emptiness, my personal question mark.

My story has become tiresome. Why is it not weekend already? - The time on Sprockets ven ve dance!

Auf Wiedersehen,

Dieter Volcano.
