Rob Zverina writes:

Hey PV,

Thanks for the continued service--you are consistent, persistent, and ----tent.

I know it's a cliché to say "i'm excited about..." but i really am excited about a couple of do's i'm putting together in the next few weeks:

Friday February 6 2004 6-9 pm - Opening of...
Surprise installation as part of "True Blue" paintings show at Priceless Works Gallery (http://www.pricelessworksgallery.com). I am (somewhat anonymously, so shhh) wallpapering a 16' x 10' room with approximately 6,000 snapshots. Floor and ceiling, too. I am really curious to see what the effect will be. It will be up through February.

Rana's Wedding @ 6th Seattle Arab & Iranian Film Festival

The 6th Seattle Arab & Iranian Film Festival is happening from 2/6 to 2/12. The opening movie is "Rana's Wedding":

With only ten hours to marry, the beautiful young Rana must negotiate her way around roadblocks, soldiers and stone throwers, and into the heart of an elusive lover. In this highly entertaining and tender film, Palestinian director Hany Abu-Assad (Ford Transit, The Fourteenth Chick) tackles romance in the occupied territories. Shot on location in East Jerusalem, Ramallah, and at all the checkpoints in-between, Rana’s Wedding is an innovative exploration of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict through the eyes of a woman stubbornly in love.

Survival Research Labs show in Las Vegas

If you have the need to get out of town in the coming weeks, you might want to check out the Survival Research Labs show that's happening in Vegas on Feb. 7:

Viva Las Vegas Survival Research Laboratories Celebrates 25 Years!

SRL was conceived and founded by Mark Pauline in 1978 as an organization of creative technicians dedicated to redirecting the techniques, tools, and tenets of industry, science, and the military away from their typical manifestations in practicality, product, or warfare. In recognition of the remarkable vision and achievements of Mark Pauline and the SRL crew, this exhibition and event will mark a quarter century of performances. Included in the gallery will be machines, documentary videos, and large-scale images. SRL engages new vocabularies by integrating machines, theatrical sets and props, with dramatic, visual metaphors bringing to life, large-scale mechanical performances for audiences that rival other popular cultural events. By taking things to extreme ends, SRL attempts to create new levels of sensory and emotional intensity. Using diverse disciplines such as performance, literature, and engineering, in concert with artistic expression, ideas are transforme! d into visceral experiences.

Exhibition: Survival Research Laboratories
Performance: Saturday, February 7 at 8 PM
Sam Boyd Stadium/UNLV
7000 E. Russell Rd.
Las Vegas, NV 89122

Flashpoint @ Soil

Capitol Hill seems to have its own Art Walk every first Saturday of the month. Soil is one of the better places:

Flashpoint

Bret Marion, Buddy Bunting, Casey Keeler, Claire Johnson, Dan Dean, Demi Raven, Jana Brevick, Jennifer Zwick, Kiki MacInnis, Margie Livingston, Randy Wood, Samantha Scherer,
Thom Heileson.

A flashpoint is the culmination of many significant actions into one, illuminating moment.

Flashpoint is a select survey showcasing recent work produced by the current members of SOIL. Subtle to high-voltage and everything in between, Flashpoint is proof positive that SOIL is one of the most dynamic arts organizations in Seattle.

Artist Trust 16th Annual Benefit Art Auction & Brunch

The press release says:

All proceeds help fund Artist Trust programs and services for Washington State artists! This is a rare opportunity to see work from a broad range of 200 contemporary visual artists, both established and emerging, who have donated their work to benefit Artist Trust’s programs of assistance to Washington State artists working in all disciplines. Among the artists donating to this year’s auction are Claudia Fitch, Fay Jones, Mark Calderon, Susan Robb, David K. Chatt, Susan Bennerstrom, and Nancy Mee.

There is nothing wrong about having an auction for a good cause - especially if you get the chance to acquire one of Susan Robb's amazing artworks. But paying $75 to $125 only to get in? That must be a joke. I hindsight SAM's Halloween party wasn't maybe that expensive after all...

THROAT SINGERS OF TUVA @ Century Ballroom

A year ago I went to a fantastic JEM Studios party and some guy was trying to impress me by demonstrating his "skills" in overtone singing. What a clown! Was he really thinking that it had anything to do with overtone music from Tuva?

I am predicting that within the next 12 months you will see overtone "artists" popping up everywhere. It'll be like the fire performances bubble all over again. At some point we will all say: "Oh no, please no overtone clowns this time!" In my opinion the problem with fire performances and overtone music is that it doesn't take much to think that you are good at it - but reality is that you are not even close.

If you want to experience the real thing before this area is getting polluted with bad overtone music performed by untalented attention whores you have to see Huun Huur Tu at the Century Ballroom:

A musical tradition. Throat-singing comprises what one might call a lexicon of musical onomatopoeia in which natural sounds are mimetically transformed into musical representations.

"Huun Huur Tu" literally means "sun propeller", which is the vertical separation of light which occurs in conjunction with sunrises & sunsets. This refraction of light seems analagous to the "refraction" of sound produced in Tuvan throat singing - hence the band's name.

"The Tuvans will ride into your brain and leave hoofprints up & down your spine"
-San Francisco Bay Guardian

"It is unfamiliar yet very accessible, an other-worldly but deeply
spiritual music that is rooted in the sounds of nature"

*LOVE, EXCITING LOVE!* @ CAPITOL HILL ARTS CENTER

Old school PV readers know that I have "shit on my fingers" when it comes to picking plays or cabaret shows. But last Tuesday Death (who I eventually met at a Pre-Halloween Party at the Blue Flamingo in 2002) called me up and invited me to join her and her friends for dinner and a show called "LOVE, EXCITING LOVE!"

I had a great time! This show is performed by the Typing Explosion, which became famous for their stand-up poetry:

A typical poetry-generating performance by Typing Explosion begins when an audience member chooses a title from over 300 original, pre-typed index cards provided by the typists (no title is used twice), or writes his or her own. Three typists in vintage 1960’s secretarial clothing are seated behind three Olivetti Valentine typewriters. After the audience participant gives this title card to the first typist, typist #1 begins the poem. The paper the poem is typed on is then handed back and forth between the three typists as they take turns writing completely original, spontaneous verse on the page, creating a collaborative piece of writing. Up to three poems are worked on at one time. The typists DO NOT SPEAK, punctuating their process with bells, horns and whistles (a secret language that the typists use, in lieu of speaking, to communicate with each other). Meanwhile, the audience participant watches the poem progress from typewriter to typewriter until one of the typi! sts deems a poem complete. The typists alert the audience that a poem is finished by honking their bike horns in unison. The participant signs for his or her poem, and receives an original Typing Explosion poem with an official stamp created from the title she or he chose.

Audience participants may do what they like with their poems – read them aloud (generating an impromptu community of exchanged readings), swap with other participants, post them on-site, keep them secret and folded in their pockets, frame them, or give them away. The Typing Explosion keeps a carbon copy of every poem produced.

I went to their web site (http://www.typingexplosion.com) and I found this very impressive haiku (5-7-5) called "All I Really Need":

Just clean underwear
Three inches of whiskey and
Half your attention

Have you ever written a haiku? - It's hard. Compare that one with PV's clumsy Buttrock Haikus (http://www.threeimaginarygirls.com/hearsay92303buttrockhaikus.asp) like:

Yummy chicken soup
Sticky feathers in my teeth
Why, oh mother, why?

Those girls are really talented. Unfortunately this time they are not generating any poems. Instead you'll get an entertaining cabaret show about love. What is love anyway? After the show I had more questions than answers.

As part of the CAPITOL HILL ARTS CENTER Residency Series- The Typing Explosion presents the All New Cabaret Spectacular,

*LOVE, EXCITING LOVE!* Your Questions Answered! Your Mind Muddled! Your Life in Shambles! SEE the HUMAN HEART EXPOSED by the Poetic Deftness of the Three Lovely Explosionists! Each week’s show different from the Last- with Ongoing Sagas, Musical Interludes, Special Guests and Delicious
Recipes.

At one point you will be asked to write a passionate love letter on a 70ies Seattle postcard. Don't worry, they will explain to you how to write a good one. I got really into it and wrote about Italy, coffee, fog, fork-lifters, and spring. I guess that defines love for me.

At the end of the show they will randomly hand out those postcards and you'll receive one from (hopefully) someone else. I got this one and I have been reading it every day:

My sweet-pea crumpet cake!

How I want to grind gravel into your shins while singing strains of non wing tongo and drinking a gallon jug of rum.

Oh! Remember Delhine? (The street, darling, not your cousin)

Bring me home in a wheelbarrow again!

Yours, your

Penny Pauper

I love this letter. I think, a guy wrote it. But I would ask out Penny Pauper on a date in a minute if knew him...

Guerrilla Masquerade Party #11 - 2004: A Space Oddity (1/31/04)

Here is Dirty Bunny's damage report:

Hey Guerrillas,

Thanks to everyone who came out Saturday nite to make '2004: A Space Oddity' such a success! The music was great, the drinks were flowing, and the costumes were amazing.

If you missed the party (or can't remember it), you can read a little about it at http://www.gmpseattle.com/040131/index.html

We've got a big batch of photos for you again this month. New GMP member LJ sent some great photos our way, and Clownbot (aka Drinky the Clown) broke from his singular mission (DRINK!) long enough to snap some wonderful photos, too. And of course, Dirty Bunny took some pictures of y'all.

LJ's pics - http://www.gmpseattle.com/040131/photos/lj/A.html

Next month's theme and invitation are in the works, so you should expect to see an email about it in the next week. A hint, you say?

New Directions in Alcohol Consumption: Whistler (CA)

So many people say that Whistler is a great place for partying all night long and having a lot of fun. I agree with the "having a lot of fun" part. But to be honest I would go to Whistler for snowboarding not for partying. Here is my downgrade statement: Whistler's nightlife is a shopping mall with six bars.

Here is the fine print:

Merlin's Bar - Upper Village
Kind of a Pioneer Square frat boy place. It took us over 30 minutes (it felt like an hour) to get in - just in time to witness closing time of their kitchen. Fortunately one of comrades was able to convince the cook to serve us some nachos.

Dubh Linn Gate Irish Pub (Mountain Square)
That's the Irish pub right at the Blackcomb ski lift. The average age is 32. It's a good place to take your mom to. I had fun, though even without - or maybe because without my mom.

Longhorn Saloon (Mountain Square)
Across the street from Dubh Linn Gate Irish Pub. Whistler and Blackcomb are two sibling mountains and also two code names for Microsoft products. "Whistler" became Windows XP and when they were looking for a code name for the next release of Windows, which would ship before "Blackcomb" they were wondering: What is between Whistler and Blackcomb? The answer was easy: Longhorn, the bar between Whistler and Blackcomb! Now you know where the code name "Longhorn" is coming from.

Oh, and the bar is like Merlin's only emptier.

Amsterdam Pub
They wouldn't let me in. Average age: 16.

Citta’s Bistro (Village Square)
We ate there. It was okay. Not a place I would hang out for drinks, though.

Savage Beagle.
One of the two dance clubs in the Whistler shopping mall. The bar is upstairs and nice. There is a small dance floor in the basement. The DJ sucks. On a busy evening the bouncer will try to make some money on the side. He would let you wait in the cold for about 15 minutes and then say: "By the way, the cover charge is $10 tonight."

Garfinkel.

The other dance club in the mall. This is were it is happening. But you'll have to wait in a long line to get in - unless you are super cute like my females comrades. They all got wasted there and had a good time while I was doing research for a Cold Lava report.
