Sarah Kavage @ Priceless Works

I like Sarah's paintings. A friend of mine who used to be Sarah's neighbor probably still has the "Swimmers" series, which she used to decorate her walls after Sarah was running out of space for her art.

Hi everyone, in case you haven't heard from me lately, it's because I've been getting ready for this:

Priceless Works Gallery presents Drew Demeter, Sarah Kavage and Libby Pace
March 5 to 29

I'll be showing a new body of work, along with Drew's black and white paintings and Libby's installations. It should be an interesting show, all about the idiosyncratic processes of creation and the search for beauty.

Opening is Friday, March 5 from 6 to 10 pm. Drew will be playing live music at the opening, and rumor has it there will be deep fryers and homemade french fries.

Hope to see you there!

Priceless Works is located at 619 35th Street in
Fremont, in the alley behind the new PCC, and is one
of the few bright spots in the "new" Fremont. Go to
http://www.pricelessworksgallery.com/ for a map. The
gallery is open Friday - Sunday 12-6 pm.

Jamey Baumgardt @ Viveza Gallery

Michael and Deborah write:

Dear Party Volcano,

We would like to invite you to check out the upcoming show at Viveza Gallery: Selling the War, an installation of recent works by Jamey Baumgardt, an artist based in Seattle. For this site-specific show of large and mid-sized paintings, Baumgardt examines packaging and advertising, as well as new forms of these ideas such as ‘markitecture’ and ‘one-to-one’ relationships between the United States government, corporations and consumers.

Please join us at the artist reception on Friday, March 5th from 6 - 10pm.

Hope to see you then!

Thanks,

Michael Rivera-Dirks and Deborah A. Priest

Vessels of Vibe @ Broadway Performance Hall.

This sounds like an interesting event. Giggles writes:

I've seen these guys a few times and I am continually amazed.
They've made noises on instruments that they made themselves, jumped on giant elastic band suspended from the ceiling and more!

C'mon down this weekend and check 'em out!

Vessels of Vibe

Straight from sold out shows and standing ovations on their recent southeastern tour, Lelavision Physical Music presents the Northwest premiere of "Vessels of Vibe". This new production is a melding of ancient music on new instruments, of traditional movements with modern choreography, and formal shapes with kinetic sculptures. The simultaneity of music, movement and interaction with sculptor / composer Ela Lamblin’s whimsical musical inventions is the hybrid signature of

Lelavision, which critics exclaim is “...exuberant…smart, joyful and moving.”Critic’s Picks' - Best of Atlanta 2003, Creative Loafing.

In this new work, Ela draws on his study of the classical Indian music form, Dhrupad, integrating the evocative soaring sounds of pitch bending, the harmonically rich buzzing drones, and the mood altering modal motifs of this ancient music with the multi-timbre tones of kinetic musical sculptures. The centerpiece for “Vessels of Vibe” is a circular aluminum invention with a bearing assembly and suspension rig that allows it to pivot and rotate planet-like in the air. Slit gongs attached to it provide the tone and timbres for the gamelan-like music created as Mann and Lamblin swing on and spin with it.

Choreographer, Leah Mann, integrates stepping patterns inspired by Kathak dance, and gesture forms of mudra (symbolic hand positions)and mellisma (gesture which reflects the flow of the music), with modern and aerial dance. The result is a full body articulation of the playing of the music.

Club Schmooze BBQ

Last week I was downgrading Club Schmooze @ SODO on Sat 2/28. I felt that $25 was a steep cover charge for schmoozing on a Saturday that had much better events to offer. Apparently I was not the only one who didn't go:

Though Club Schmooze (www.wuxx.com/schmooze) was open bar, we still have a significant amount of beer, wine, and liquor leftover. Thus, I'm throwing a BBQ this Saturday evening. Please attend and enjoy free food and drinks. In lieu of any cover or cost, I'll have a few boxes around for various charities and please consider bringing some extra cash or a check to donate. Also, if you work for, are on the board of, or are otherwise affiliated with a charitable non-profit (501(c)(3)), please make a shoebox advertising your organization and bring it on Saturday.

So far 7 guests have confirmed that they would come.

Seattle Irish Reels Film Festival 2004

Topography of Home @ SOIL

I will probably go even though the last shows have been a little bit disappointing because they were more like end of semester presentations of an art class. But this time might be different. The title sounds promising and I feel encouraged to go to another show about Home especially after seeing Andi Pihl's great photos last week (Home @ Home).

Her photos reminded me a little bit of the German photographer Bernhard Blume (who also happens to be an art professor in Hamburg). Blume's photos are funny, scary, kind, and sad. The people in his photos seem clumsy and not in control of their environment. Everyday objects seem to have taken over the world and forced humans to play by their rules.

If you are interested here are some links. One of his exhibitions was called "Wahnzimmer" (tripping room). (It’s a pun: "Wahn"=insane, "zimmer"=room, "Wohnzimmer"=living room). Unfortunately I couldn't find a picture of that collection. But this one is from "Zu Hause und im Wald" (at home and in the forrest): http://www.kunstnet.at/charim/2000_03_16_1.html
Another series was called Trautes Heim (home sweet home):
http://www.portikus.de/images/A0002.1.jpg

Enough about Blume. Here is everything you need to know about the Soil opening:

Topography of Home presents the work of Gretchen Bennett of Williamsburg, Brooklyn and Debra Baxter of Seattle, Washington.

Their work examines the establishment of individual space and experimenting with borders. Taking in the lay of the land and determining what roots us and what is fleeting, both Baxter and Bennett focus on the momentary, representing moments seized and weighed.

Baxter uses hundreds of powder puffs sewn together to create billowing masses of clouds hinting at adornment. Her monotypes on silk tissue paper and vellum present a kind of quietude and subtlety, addressing density, gravity and mass.

Bennett explores the idea that paper-light objects tie us to a place; they are markers, points, and indicators. Pulled from the everyday, she chooses and arranges these, pulling in all apparent strands of a common language in the form of drawings and installations.

BLAINE FONTANA @ Bluebottle Art Gallery

The show is called "The Manifest Soup Transcripts, Chapter's 1 - 9" and I think it's not worth going:

Native Seattle Artist Blaine Fontana will be exhibiting his first solo show at the progressive Bluebottle Art Gallery. Blaine has spent his recent time as a freelance artist/designer for national companies and galleries the last fours years. He has been rapidly gaining national recognition as a blue chip artist and designer, sought out by cutting edge design companies and contemporary collectors. Fontana's paintings and design has been published and produced through Metro.Pop. magazine, CMYK magazine, LRG, Volcom, Ubiquity Recordings, Stifle Clothing, Morey Boards, Don O'Melveny Gallery, Cannibal Flower Art Collective, Antipodwear, RTEA, Urban Earth Gallery, Pacific Sunwear, FLIP and others.

Why is it not worth going? Here is why:

STRIPJOINT! @ The Segway in "Ballard".

Devoted PV reader and occasional special correspondent Ron Jeremy wants to know if they really are going to have nudity at this event:

The reason I ask is that my impression of Washington's archaic and puritanical liquor laws (carried over from England on the Mayflower, I believe) is that they prohibit the mixture of nudity and alcohol in this state. That's why when you go to a strip club you can only order coke with your lap dance (unlike in more civilized states, such as Canada, where you can get properly drunk). Does this rule not apply because it is a private event? Or are they risking shut-down by a bunch of musket-wielding pilgrims under the auspices of the liquor control board? Or is this a case of false advertising, and we will only be teased by clowns in "naughty" but not naked outfits? Enquiring minds want to know.

Here are the details:

Circus Contraption creates an evening not even Sigmund Freud was able to dream up!

A feast of sensual rapture awaits as we bring you:

Thursday 3/11

Art Show @ Retail Therapy

dB is probably more famous for his parties (Leap Warehouse Party on 2/28 and Red Stripe Art Walk @ The Prudential on 3/4). This Thursday he is showing his paintings at Wazhma's Retail Therapy. She writes:

This month we are hosting the drawings of DB otherwise know as Daniel Dobrovkine. For those of you who are unfamiliar with him. Daniel was Born in Moscow, USSR but lived primarily in Geneva, Switzerland. Although he is best known for his tech & social suaveness... the man with many facets shows us one more to his never ending list of talents. This will be a peak of his drawings which show the influences of his diverse background.

"I believe that color often fakes the essence of a person, that it is merely to accentuate contrast and attract the eye. Hence, I have been faithful to monotone sanguine, red charcoal or crayon.

And then the small notebook ran out of space" DB

Please come join us for wine food and laid back atmosphere on March 11th.

Cold Lava

Soirée Francophone à Chapel (3/4/04)

My concerns about 'Loud Jacket' Russ burning down Chapel were unfounded. He writes:

I noticed that in the last issue of Party Volcano, in the course of venting your own criticisms of The Chapel, you brought my name into it and speculated that that I'd hate the drinks there. Truth is, I've been there 3 times now, and--being a creature of habit--have always ordered the same drink (a Mint Gimlet), which uses fresh mint leaves (a sign of distinction among Seattle bars) and which I find to be quite tasty. Other friends of mine, with impeccable cocktail credentials of their own, tell me that the drinks there are good. So, rather than wanting to burn the place down, I am more willing to burn some of the money in my wallet there. I just thought I'd set the record straight.

The drink I was having was really bad - I had tasted better shampoo than that Apple Martini. But I am willing to give it another try. It will be a Mint Gimlet. Thanks Russ for your valuable feedback!

Last Minute Lava

This just came in from Amy, who works at the Stranger:

it's a Wedding party! i hope you guys would consider sending this
out...it's an open invite.

Marriage March Monday

Gay couples are meeting at Espresso Vivace's sidewalk cafe (321

We're going to head down to the King County Clerk's office (500 4th

and Chicago have done this week). If we're turned away, we're going to
do it again every day next week.

Other couples and singles are welcome to join to show support!

Within two hours or so, there will be a full explanation at the top of
