Beyond Disbelief

The Suspension Film Series
Curated by Andy Spletzer with Adam Hart

At the very foundation of cinema is the notion of the suspension of disbelief. We lose ourselves in the movies. We identify with the characters in fiction films; we become engaged with the people in documentaries, we can unhinge our perceptions when confronted with experimental film.

When we watch a movie, we are lifted out of our own lives and float in the reality created by other people. With this series we hope to transcend the disbelief and lies inherent in film and move to something bigger, better, or more truthful.

February 27-29
TINY PLASTIC RAINBOW
A day in the life of a variety of Chicagoens who are each floating in an emotional bubble. Sometimes meditative and other times deadpan hilarious, director Jennifer Reeder pushes at the edges of both narrative and digital video.

Not only will Jennifer Reeder be in town to introduce the Friday and Saturday screenings, but also on Saturday the 28th at 3:00 she will share her experiences in creating shorts submitting them to venues across the country.

Club Schmooze @ SODO

Rob Dolin owner of Wuxx, DJ, and promoter is trying to get people to his lame party:

Dear Wuxx subscriber,

In 10 days on Saturday, February 28, I'm proud to be DJ'ing and co-hosting a new party called "Club Schmooze." In conjunction with Dr. Michael Events of Vancouver, Wuxx has rented a large space in SoDo (2424 1st Ave. S across from the Starbucks building). We'll be throwing an open bar party where you can schmooze with fellow Seattle young professionals and of course enjoy great beats from Retro to the top of today's charts. The flier is below and tickets are available at www.wuxx.com/schmooze.

Cheers--
--Rob Dolin

I can't help but this looks like a rip-off. What's my problem? - Twenty-five bucks to get in. I usually go to 25 parties for $25 or 25 restaurants for $25 (see Monday). Okay, drinks will be for free. Well, the flyer says "all you can drink (yes!)". Let's hope they have more than chai tea to offer.

Mamafest Pre Party @ Chop Suey

Jackie writes:

Hey Party Volcano!

I was wondering if you could add an event to your calendar.

Feb 28th, Chop Suey - Minus the Bear,The More, The Girls and The Senate Arcade. $8.
The event is presented by Mamafest; Snowboard for Breast Cancer.
It's basically a pre-event fundraiser for our main event in March at Stevens Pass March 20th. The Chop Suey show is a way for us to raise some money to pay for the festival costs and also to raise awareness about breast cancer. Donated funds from both the Chop Suey show and the Stevens pass event will be distributed to the University of Washington's Medical Genetic Clinic, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and other Seattle local breast cancer organizations.
If anyone has any questions or would like to know more about the organization, the website address is www.mamafest.org.

Thanks party volcano!

Jackie

You are welcome!

Tantra @ Liquid Lounge

This week there are "only" two Bollywood events like this one. It actually depends how you count. If you add Habibi (almost ahlaam on Thursday) and Globalista (Tost on Fridays) to that list you are looking at four Bollywood / Middle Eastern dance nights during a regular week. Some might say: "This is great! I love the music!" But let me tell you what happened to me after an overdose of Panjabi MC (listen up, Miguel !). I loved the CD (Beware) until they played his tracks everywhere - even at a Mardi Gras party in Columbia City. Look at me now. I have become a musically disturbed person, a shadow of myself. After work I go home and sit in the dark for hours while listening to Finnish tango and Polish polka...

This is a continued evite from the last party in December.
Please confirm and RSVP if you wil be making it to the party on Feb 28th.

Free Belly Dance Event at the Lower Level

Kendra writes:

Hiya --

I've found some great events via Party Volcano in the last few months, and now I've got one of my own to throw out there. My bellydance troupe Hands of Kali is hosting a free monthly night of bellydance performance and open dance music, on the first Monday of every month. First one's this coming Monday, March 1.

Here's the info: It's at the Lower Level (formerly the Joint), below Capitol Hill Arts Center, address is 1621 - 12th Ave. Doors open at 8pm, belly dancers go on at 8:30. There's no cover, and this month our headline performer is the truly amazing Delilah. More details can be found on our website: www.handsofkali.com. Questions and whatnot can be addressed to info@handsofkali.com.

Thanks for keeping us in mind!

Cheers,
Kendra

We have recommended belly dancing events. Remember The 15th Annual Mediterranean Fantasy Festival 2002 (7/20-7/21/2002)? It was fun! At that time one of the Raqs Al-Hamra belly dancers wrote:

"Basically it is a wacky outdoor belly dance festival. There are vendors (cool jewelry and garb - even for those that don't dance) and food. And the highlight is the outdoor stage with NON-STOP belly dance performances. There are over 100 dancers / troupes scheduled to perform over the weekend. Some really, really good; some really, really bad and everything in between.... It's just campy enough (and a touch freakish at times) to be cool. If you have never been before it is definitely worth experiencing..."

You can get a little taste of that at Kendra's free belly dance evening!

Lower Level @ CHAC, 1621 - 12th Ave, 8pm, free.

The South Seattle Community College Art Gallery is proud to host four award winning artists whose works are meticulously constructed from the flotsam and jetsam of daily consumer life. As both collectors and creators, their compositions focus on social and political themes. Their creative genius will amuse and inspire you.

I have no idea where the Jerry Brockey Center is, though.

Stiffed (cabaret) @ CHAC.

I passionately dislike cabaret. I cannot imagine a worse way of raising money for the dying Fringe project.

The Fringe Task Force, a group of self-organized theatre artists, is putting on a hot little weekly cabaret called STIFFED: Fringe Artists Getting It Up Again to help raise the $63,000 owed to 2003 Fringe artists and venues in the wake of the recent financial crisis at Seattle Fringe Theatre Productions. At the Capitol Hill Arts Center (CHAC, 1621 12th Ave.), Lower Level, TUESDAY NIGHTS, March 2-March 30, as part of CHAC's inaugural Residency series. List it! Recommend it! Don't miss it!

Too bad if Fringe didn't make it. Wait a sec, there is that little German voice in my head again:

Vhy is it that the truly brilliant are doomed to a life of obscurity, surrounded by a sea of mediocrity, only to end up covered in sores in a pool of their own filth?

Oh vell, the beat goes on.

Capitol Hill Arts Center (CHAC, 1621 12th Ave.),
Tickets for STIFFED: $10.00 at the door, 21+ ID Required. Doors open at 7pm; show starts at 8pm. For more information, visit

Soirée Francophone à Chapel

Wissam writes:

Salut,

Wissam Tabbara

This time it'll be at the Chapel. It used to be a funeral home - right across the street from Bauhaus. When I went there two months ago I was very disappointed. The place is cool but the people sucked. So did the drinks. Wazhma and I had cocktails that tasted like shampoo. I was almost glad that the bartender was cheap enough to make them only 3/4 full. I am worried that (Loud Jacket) Russel will eventually order a Martini at Chapel. After that he will most likely burn down that place.

Chin-Chin!
