Events For 4/17/03 to 4/23/03

We have received a lot of emails of new subscribers and only refused one of them (see Letter to the Editor). Our email list has now 981 readers and I am still adding about 30 per day.

Some of Party Volcano's old and loyal friends are now probably getting concerned and wonder whether this change in size will also affect quality and style of our weekly emails. I hope this will not be the case and we are trying to prove this with a downgrade (Loveshack's Easter Feast) and an invitation to a private party in a week (see Future Lava).

Loveshack’s “Easter Feast” @ Fado

Martin Lovschall is a Danish guy who goes by the moniker, “Loveshack” (this is, apparently, Danish wit). He lived in Seattle for several years and through his extreme gregariousness built up an email list of 3000 names. He would throw giant parties, not for profit, but simply for his genuine love of people. A lot of the parties weren’t that great—despite his huge email list, actual attendees tended to self-select towards frat boy types and he was the recipient of a PV downgrade—but you still had to admire the guy for not just acclimating to America but downright thriving in a social sense.

Last summer he moved back to Denmark. He hosted one last bash, which he termed, “The Loveshack Go Away Party” (Danish ESL) on a salsa cruise ship full of serious Latino salsa dancers, embarking for an evening of serious dancing. At the time, one of our PV reporters attended and reported back: “Interesting cultural experiment: frat guys meet salsa crowd. Result: reconfirmation that white guys can’t dance.” We all thought that was the last we would ever see or hear from Loveshack.

But then a strange thing happened: his 3000 person Evites started reappearing…for parties in Seattle. Wasn’t Loveshack long gone? Wasn’t he back in Copenhagen, watching soccer or playing with Legos or eating Danish pastries or doing whatever Danes do?

A team of undercover Party Volcano reporters investigated. In a shattering expose we revealed that Loveshack never showed up to his own Seattle parties. The motive for this subterfuge was, in a word, profit. Loveshack was teaming up with local promoters so they could use his email list to draw in bigger crowds under the guise of another giant Loveshack party. To be fair, Loveshack never actually stated in his Evites that he was going to be in Seattle for his parties, but he sure strongly implied it. Which, at least initially, was ! all that was needed, since the typical Loveshack party attendee wasn’t necessarily the most astute at suspecting that something was amiss. (“Cool, dude! It’s like another Loveshack party!”) Loveshack could then take a cut of whatever the promoter was charging for a salsa cruise or the extra money a bar made on drink sales—all without leaving the comfort of his soccer watching, Lego playing, Danish pastry eating, Copenhagen lifestyle.

But, of course, Loveshack was building a house of cards, destined to collapse. Our readers learned first about his scam (we warned them off his first fake Seattle party), and it was only a matter of time before Loveshack’s adoring public realized he wasn’t actually at any of the parties they were attending. (“Hey dude, where’s like Loveshack?”) When enough of them finally caught on, the Evites for Loveshack’s parties abruptly ceased.

It could almost be read as a classic American mythic tale. Fresh-faced boy comes to America. Through his natural friendliness and charm he finds his way in the big city and thrives (email list of 3000). Becomes very successful at what he does (throws large, well attended parties, not for profit but for his love of people). But somehow he loses his way, the lure of greed proves too powerful and that is his downfall (tries to make a profit by teaming up with unscrupulous promoters and throwing parties while he is still in Denmark). Kind of like Charlie Sheen in “Wall Street.”

In the classic mythic tale, the last chapter usually has some form of redemption with the hero realizing the error of his ways and realigning his path with what is right (again, think of Charlie Sheen in “Wall Street”). And, bizarrely, that appears to be what will actually unfold this weekend. Loveshack is going to return—really return—in person and in Seattle this Friday, for, as he terms it, an “Easter Feast” party. (We assume he means “Fest”, not “Feast”, since this party is being he! ld at a bar and centers on drinking, not eating—Danish ESL, again.) So the fallen hero, our sweet-tempered Loveshack, who lost his way to unscrupulous greed, now finds redemption by actually showing up to one of his parties, on a holiday that features our Lord, the Redeemer, dying for our sins and rising from the dead to save our souls.

It’s so weirdly big, mythic and grand, it almost makes us want to upgrade Loveshack. But then we imagine we can hear the reunion on Friday night—“Loveshack! Dude! You’re back! Let’s paaar-taay!” And we firmly maintain our DOWNGRADE.

Fado Irish Pub, 701 First Ave, 7 pm, Free.

Bach Around the Clock @ Town Hall.

On Saturday, April 19, Town Hall presents its third annual admission-free Bach marathon, Bach Around the Clock. The days begins at 1 PM with a Family Concert, and moves downstairs at 9 PM for a Bach-flavored jazz session led by Jovino Santos Neto.

I wouldn't spend any money on Neto. But I would definitely go to some of the free music performances. The Cello Suite in D minor at 4:15pm will be a lot of cello if you are not used to it. If you haven't been listening to Bach's music a lot you will probably also find the Ricercares from the Musical Offering (4:45pm) a little bit too heavy. But then the two Preludes and Fugues from Bk. 2 of The Well-Tempered Clavier (Byron Schenkman will play at 4:45pm) are probably the best choice.

If you are obsessed with Bach - like me - you won't want to miss the Goldberg Variations performed at 3pm. It's one of my favorite Bach pieces:

According to Forkel (Bach's first biographer) during one visit in 1742, the Count Hermann Carl von Keyserlingk of Dresden, who was suffering from insomnia, requested Bach to compose some pieces "of a quiet and somewhat cheerful (sanften und etwas muntern) character" for this use, and Bach brought forth the Aria mit dreißig Veränderungen ("Aria with 30 variations", BWV 988) that have carried Goldberg's name into posterity. The Count, overwhelmed by the magnificence of the work, had Goldberg play them night after night. So impressed and delighted was he that he rewarded Bach with a golden goblet filled with 100 Louis d'Or.

Whether this is a true story or not doesn't really matter. It's a brilliant piece. I own seven different interpretations and my favorite is Glenn Gould's 1955 recording. Let's hope Corey Jamason will play the Goldberg Variations in an agreeable manner so I won't have to use my tomatoes.

Town Hall is located directly on the corner of Eighth Avenue and Seneca Street. The building is a landmark white building, with Roman-revival columns on the front of the building and a prominent dome.

"Eat Jesus" Easter Sunday Parade from Westlake Center to Pike Place Market.

This crazy guerilla party group, which organizes Santarchy and Brides of March and other events, is bringing you an Easter Parade with an edible Jesus:

11am, sunday morning, April 20... Easter Sunday. A parade...

Leading from Westlake Center to Pike Place Market, ending in Victor Steinbrueck park. A crucified, edible Jesus, carried by 12 disciples in robes. Romans. Easter bunnies. The Last Brunch and Easter Egg hunt.

Yes, it's the first Body of Christ Easter Parade! In which we make
an edible Jesus and feed his body and blood to the disenfranchised people who hang out in Victor Steinbrueck park! Can you think of a better way to celebrate the DEATH OF OUR LORD? After all, he TOLD us to eat of his body!

And WE NEED YOU! We need DISCIPLES, and ROMANS, and BUNNIES! Do you fit any or all of these characters? Can you wear a robe for Christ? Have a breastplate? Bunny ears? Then come join us in our CRUSADE AGAINST HUNGER!

Plans for building the edible Jesus are afoot, but volunteers are
still welcome! Just contact the usual instigator to get involved.

If an event happens in a forest and there's no one there to start a
list,will anyone hear it?

RACHAEL'S BED&BREAKFAST HOUSEWARMING on 4/26.

Hi, Lovelies:

The Black Rock Gazette is the daily publication for what
event?

Upon receiving any number of successful responses, I'll send the
necessary info to interested peeps. It's gonna be a blast!

Best regards,

Letters to the Editor.

From: Deran Ludd

Yes, you stinking bosche, those comments in the Stranger - Seattle's Out-of-Towners Newspaper, were by me. And yes, of course, that is you all I was referring to. I am from here, and believe you me I would clearly recall if invitations had been sent out to encourage dull-witted fashion victims to immigrate here. Listen you boring untermenschs, the only thing hypocritical about me is that I am not yet dead and/or have not, like everyone else I knew here, left this shithouse formerly known as Seattle. But, in my waning days of sanity, I think I will stay around and teach imbeciles like yourselves manners and literacy.

And of course, everyday there is hope that you will all be pecked to death by seagulls. I mean, there is always that hope. Everyday.

Dear Mr Ludd,

Thank you for sending in your impressive resume. Party Volcano has been looking for somebody like you for a long time: a crazy fuck with too much time on his hands.

Our young and energetic team does indeed need some lessons about manners and literacy and you might be the perfect teacher. Our top priorities for this fiscal year are: increasing Party Volcano's potty-mouth inventory, improving our insulting skills, and becoming masters at the art of delusional ranting, all of which you have been practicing for so many years in your letters to the Stranger.

Please accept our invitation for an interview in the following days!

Kind regards,

Party Volcano
