Confessions of a Burning Man

David Peterman writes:

I had originally thought this was only showing one night, but
it will actually be there for a whole week!

I exchanged some emails with the filmmakers earlier today and
learned that two of them will be in attendance on April 23
and 24 for a Q & A session. Here's the description of the
film they provided:

This documentary / art film is a visual and auditory journey. It
follows four first-timers to the Burning Man event in the Black Rock
desert of Nevada, which is attended by over 30,000 people annually.
Described by critics as "majestic" and "inspiring," the film is the
ultimate introduction for those who have never attended Burning Man,
and transporting for those who wish to re-live their
experience on the
playa.

Every Friday resident DJ Darek Mazzone, host of KEXP¹s Wo¹ Pop and
KUOW¹s
Planet Beat, leads a crew of DJ¹s on a musical journey through the hottest modern global tracks that are bumpin the dance floors of clubs through out the World. This is globalization at its best, the fusion of cultural influences to create new sounds that transcend borders and move your soul.

James Whetzel describes the new Mirabeau as follows:

BTW: regarding the Mirabeau room what can I say? Like an elegant nightclub phoenix the old Seattle icon "Sorry Charlies" has been given a stylish new life as one of the most beautiful clubs in town. The brand new club has two bars, a great new stage, a large dance floor, a powerful sound system, and a sumptuous lounge.

So please come out and enjoy this our first Globalista night at the brand new club the Mirabeau room, with Cheb I Sabbah headlinging. It should be historic.

Larry Harvey lecture @ CHAC

The press release says:

For the few folks out there who may not know this already, Larry Harvey is the executive director of Burning Man and is generally credited with being the guy who got this whole thing going. This is his first speaking engagement in Seattle.

The CHAC is not the largest place in the world, so diem and the folks at Static Factory have put together a ticket sales protocol that will hopefully be fair to everyone. It might look a tad bit confusing at first, so take a deep breath and read slowly. You'll be fine.

* Tickets go on sale at 2:00pm
* First 50 are guaranteed *seating* upstairs in the CHAC.
* Next 200 are guaranteed *entrance* upstairs, but you might be sitting on the floor or standing.
* After that, people will be admitted upstairs until it is full. At that point, admittance will be into the Lower Level only, where there will be a live video feed. Please note that the Lower Level is 21+.

Timetable:
2:00 - 6:00pm: Tickets will be sold downstairs in the Lower Level only.
6:00 - 7:00pm: Tickets sold both upstairs and downstairs.
7:00 - 8:00pm: Tickets sold upstairs only.
8:00pm: Lecture starts.

Sunday, April 25 @ 8:00
Capitol Hill Arts Center, 1621 12th Ave.

Kraftwerk @ Paramount Theatre.

Kraftwerk ("power plant" in German) probably doesn't heave to be introduced anymore. They are coming into town this Saturday but I won't go. I just think they are weird. At one point (it must have been in the early 80ies) they decided to place puppets that looked like them on stage and played from backstage. They topped that by having a concerts with puppets in two cities at the same time. But of course they wouldn't tell their fans in which city they would hide behind curtains. I bet they were sitting at home while somebody was playing their CD.

I don't think that this kind of entertainment would fly here in the United States. But be prepared for some unexpected setting that looks like it has a deep meaning. It could also be a total rip-off. Or it could be a rip-off with a deep message.

In my opinion the correct response to Kraftwerk's pseudo-deepness is Senior Coconut, whose Latin beat cover versions seem to suggest that there is a funny side in every Kraftwerk song. I read in an interview with Senior Coconut (a.k.a. Uwe Schmidt, a longtime veteran of the German electronic dance scene) the following:

The work of Ralf Hutter and Florian Schneider, the men behind Kraftwerk, was meant to be cold and detached, the exact opposite of steamy Latin dances. However, Coconut said, "Kraftwerk songs contain a strong musical content even if freed from their electronic arrangements. And I don't think the band is as serious as people think they are."

GMP's "Medical Mystery" Party @ The Double Header (Saturday 4/17/04)

Hey Guerrillas!

Thanks to everyone who braved the distant shores of exotic Pioneer
Square on Saturday nite to take part in "Medical Mystery". Plenty of
nurses & doctors, accident victims, and other medically mysterious
folks showed up to fill up the Double Header -- a bar that usually
sees about 6 people on weekends, it seems. Our bartender was a
little slow, and a lot overwhelmed, but kept us all in beer and
liquor. And with so much medical personnel on staff, everyone had
plenty of opportunities to get physicals. Doctor Jerry and his
lovely nurse seemed to be taking care of the demand, testing
prostates and sperm counts of many ailing Guerrillas, and delivering
prescriptions in the form of spankings.

Check out pictures of the nite in the GMP gallery:
http://www.gmpseattle.com/gallery/
And be sure to take a look at photos taken by other GMP guests Drinky
the Clown of the Temple of Necronomiclown and Miss Varla Vaccine of
the Naughty Nurse Brigade at
http://public.fotki.com/drinkyclown/medical_gmp/ and
http://www.lillywarner.com/medicalmysteryparty/

As you can see, the costumes were as amazing and creative as ever,
and we had a great time.

We did run into a couple problems, however. If anyone accidently
picked up a red leather jacket, please contact us immediately. When
the lovely Cami went to leave, she found that her coat had left
without her. We'd love to reunite these two. Cami -- be sure to
email us so if the coat shows up, we can get ahold of you. The bar
staff also suggested you give them a call this week, just in case it
turned up there (206-624-8439). And speaking of reunions -- a young
lady named Gail left her credit card at the bar, and they'd love to
reunite it with you (and get your signature, we imagine).

Next month, we'll be doing something a little different -- A
screening party for the GMP Documentary. So mark May 8th on your
calendar for "Hooray for HOLLYWEIRD!". Details will be coming very
soon.

See ya then!
