Panjabi MC @ Showbox.

I am recommending this show. His music is being played
everywhere (there is even a mix with Emminem out) and
that's for a good reason.
Ike writes:

"Panjabi MC" is known all over the world for his chart
buster's "Beware of the Boys / Mundaiyan tu Bach Ke"
and "Jogi" which were both in the top 10 charts for
numerous weeks all over Europe, earlier this year.
As a result of which he won an MTV Europe Music Award
and a World Music award. More at:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/coventry/music/stories/2003/01/panjabi-mc.shtml

To top it off: Manpreet, Darek and Anshul will open
for Panjabi MC.
Also performing is the award winning UBC Bhangra team.

I don't necessary share the excitement about Panjabi
MC's upcoming show as much as James Whetzel who
declared this week to "Panjabi Week":

Whereas modern Panjabi music has been rocking Seattle
well for many
years, bringing a mix of dhol and hip hop beats to the
far corners of the
Northwest, I hereby declare the week of April 27 ?
April 30th Panjabi
week. The celebration will begin with the Panjabi MC
pre-func party
this Tuesday April 27th at the Shanti night at the
beautiful Mirabeau
Room, starting at 9pm with DJs Anshul and Anup and
tabla player Deepayan
Acharjya.

In my opinion unfortunately every other week is a
Panjabi Week in this town.

This will be a sold out show and thus it is highly
recommended to buy your tickets in advance:

> $ 18 on www.seattleguru.com
> $17 at:
- KK Market in Kent (253-854-5236)
- Mayuri Video, Redmond (425-861-3800)
- JD Market, Lynwood (425-672-3497)
- Travelers, Capitol Hill

**** Some Bhangra animals are different from others:
VIP (limited tickets) $40 includes:
Exclusive entrance: No waiting in Line with the 1,200
or so people expected, reserved bar area, and Free
admission to the After Party.
Call 206-898-8852

**** There will also be an After party at the Mirabeau
Room:
Panjabi MC after party (The Mirabeau Room: 529 Queen
Anne Ave N)

After the showbox head over to the Mirabeau Room for
the afterparty. Panjabi MC should make his presence
felt at the after party as well and DJ Manpreet &
Anshul will play on.

Ages: 18 and over
Tickets: $10 @ the door (Free if you buy VIP tickets
for the Showbox)

Showbox, 1426 - First Avenue, $18.

Padre Fabretto and the American Nicaraguan Foundation.

Over 3,000 boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 22
participate in Fabretto programs at five children?s
centers, an auto mechanics shop, a farm, and a
forestry project with a carpentry shop.

Fabretto serves the children through its centers in
the cities of Managua, Estel?, Somoto, Quebrada Honda
and San Jose de Cusmapa. Each year, Fabretto works
with the local school district to determine which
children are most disadvantaged and which would have
trouble continuing classes due to a lack of family

MIX Nights: Synesthesia

This is one of those copycat events (see Voyage blurb
below) in my opinion. I am not going but if you go let
me know how it was:

[Syn-es-the-sia] (n. syn = together + aisthesis =
perception): stimulation of one sensory modality
causing mixed perceptions in different senses...MiX
Nights' sensorial torrent will involve you on May 1st
at 9pm and will go into the crack of dawn.

Featuring*...

DJ Miguel
- MiX Nights Resident
- Opening the night with multiple faces of house
music, from tribal to funky Charlie B
- Member of the United House Front
- Live appearances on C89.5's "The Vortex" show
- Making the dance floor pump at about 130bpm with
funky house, disco house and progressive house

DJ Darek Mazzone and James Whetzel
- Hosts Wo-Pop on KEXP 90.3FM
- Planet Beat Host and Producer on NPR (KUOW)
- Nominated for best Seattle DJ by Seattle Weekly
- Filling the dance floor with world beats along with
live percussion by James Whetzel

As you dance throughout the night, enjoy ongoing
attractions:

. Foxfire?s multimedia art
. Jade & Sweet shadow dance and sensorial troupe
. Heksa and Ulu, The Hoop Girls aerial performance

Dress Code: Slick, Sexy & Synesthesic
Cover Charge: Gentlemen $10. Ladies are invited for
free until 11PM, and $10 thereafter
Unhosted bar brought to you by Mojito Cafe

Access to this private exodus must be cleared by MIX,
based on 21 ID and name list confirmation.

Come join this conspiracy of mixed signals that will
relieve you of sensory deprivation. Plunge into a
kaleidoscope of sensation that will indulge your
imagination to fly. Draw closer to hear the deafening
visual shows, breathe in vibrant colors, taste the
warm touch of dancing energy... DJs will paint the air
with music that will take on a life of its own. Bring
your senses to a celebration of synesthesia. Set your
perception free!

Monday 5/3/04

Voyage @ Bada Lounge.

This is probably my favorite event for this week. I
went to Wissam's first Voyage last month and I liked
it a lot. There was Middle Eastern music, belly
dancing, and even Panjabi MC. But this was different
from those events that are currently flooding this
area. Voyage felt more like an evening where I met my
friends, had drinks with them, and chatted. Music,
dance performance, and the visual art projections
stayed in the background and created the atmosphere
instead being the main focus of the evening. Also,
Voyage is only once a month and not every week. As
simple as it sounds this is a new concept.

Unfortunately this will probably not hold for long and
other copycats will discover Voyage and will try to
imitate this style of events until we all get sick of
them like it happened after Wissam's Casbah and
Jeannie in the Bottle. In the first stages of this
process of cultural decay event promoters try to
attract party eyeballs. One common trick is making the
event appear as if it was a public party and not a
commercial event. Other tricks are saying it was a
benefit or fund raiser for a good cause, or jacking up
the number of people that are coming. If you don't
believe me have a look at Eruption on 3/20/2003
(http://www.evite.com/pages/invite/viewInvite.jsp?event=WAJPOPLBGTWQHIVDTNXA).
What the hell is the Eruption Relief Fund the $10
cover charge went to? If you flip through the
responses you'll find many that said they would bring
8-10 friends, some of them went up to 30 friends.
Those responses look suspicious and were probably
placed to let it appear as if lots of people would go.

What usually follows is a flood of similar events that
of course never reach the quality and fun level of
Wissam's original parties. Here are some other
examples of past events that fit that category. Notice
the repeating styles and themes like Magic Carpet,
Genie, Sahara, Sultan, and Voyage:
http://www.evite.com/pages/invite/viewInvite.jsp?event=USOHYENYTGFBDCVQYJPY
http://www.evite.com/pages/invite/viewInvite.jsp?event=ZTOGWWGXGPQCQOOVQNJG
http://www.evite.com/pages/invite/viewInvite.jsp?event=DRIIIBXOMZIXVXNPICQV
http://www.evite.com/pages/invite/viewInvite.jsp?event=FHSYXPYCIRKIIKBWBGKV
http://www.evite.com/pages/invite/viewInvite.jsp?event=IEKKISCOCERAMJJPFGEN

The last step in this process is usually something
like http://www.seanights.com .

If you like Middle Eastern music and want to have a
nice evening at a bar with an interesting atmosphere
and not too loud so you can actually talk to your
friends or new people you should definitely go. The
cover charge ($6) is cheap even for PV standards and
the drinks are reasonably priced. I had never liked
Bada because it always reminded me of a bathroom with
beautiful yuppies. But Wissam and his crew (Sean does
the lights and projections) did a good job in making
this bathroom a comfortable place.

The rest is pretty straight forward:

Downtown Seattle sparkles the first Monday of each
month with VOYAGE: an exotic, multidimensional delight
for the senses at Bada Lounge. At VOYAGE you?ll eat,
drink, mix and mingle while enjoying international
short films, djs, live visual art shows with
projections taking flight from all over the globe, and
a special guest performer each month.

You Germans are so stuck up! "Dyskoteka" means

you know, like Donna Summers and Saturday Night Fever,
how do you say it in German?!

Dear Diane,

We call them "Disse". Was it fun?
