Sequim Lavender Festival.

First I thought the email was kidding but I think they are serious:

Sequim Lavender Festival, July 16th - July 18th. If you're getting burned out on the tulips in Mount Vernon, then this is a nice alternative. Go there for just a good smile - how could anyone possibly feel grumpy while standing in a field of beautiful Lavender?

The part with "getting burned out on the tulips in Mount Vernon" really cracks me up. Then I went to the website (http://www.lavenderfestival.com/) are I found funnier details:

Join us Friday, July 16 at 11:00 am at the Street Fair Stage for the opening ceremony of the Festival. We are honored that Ciscoe Morris, master gardener and media personality, will officially "open" the festival and conduct a workshop. Bill Brookerson, Deputy Director of the Washington State Department of Agriculture, will present the proclamation from Governor Gary Locke, declaring July 16-18 as "Lavender Festival Days".

Why did they put "open" in quotes? And Brookerson presenting a "Lavender Festival Days" proclamation from Locke? That is so hilarious...

THE 5TH MOTION NOTION FESTIVAL near Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

THE 5TH MOTION NOTION FESTIVAL

Motion Notion has grown and matured into one of North America's premier
music festivals. Every summer, open-minded individuals come together to
experience and participate in a unique fusion of electronic music, art, and
camping at a splendid riverside park. You can enjoy relaxing afternoons by
the river with friends, go wild at night, and quite possibly become more in
touch with yourself and the universe by the time it's over.

After the response from last year you have to know this event is going to be
AMAZING! We are trembling in pleasant anticipation!! Just look who's
coming...

Premiere of “Where’s the Party, Yaar?” @ Neumos.

Wissam's Culture Theory letter points out this event:

Where’s the Party Yaar? Film Screening & Dance Party. The premiere of “Where’s the Party, Yaar?” is Friday July 16th (Add to Outlook) at 8:00pm. This is a comedy about an Indian immigrant Hari Patel, "fresh off the boat" or FOB, who tries to crash Indian dance parties. The film pokes fun at every sacred cow it can find, from astrologers, pirated CDs, South Asians in post 9/11 America, shagadelic Indian student bachelor pads (with half a dozen roomies) to that holiest of holies, a Bollywood song in the rain. Please visit www.wtpy.com to read reviews and view trailers.

Screening is followed by a dance party with DJ Manpreet, DJ Anjali (Portland) and The Incredible Kid (Portland). The visuals are mixed by Now Device.

Join us and have a chance to mingle with the Producer/Cast Member Sunil Thakkar and other cast/crew members that will be present for Questions/Answer session and partying.

The premiere and the dance party are presented by Tasveer & Culture Theory and co-presented by Music Masala, Northwest Asian American Film, Festival 2004, Indian Student Association (UW), I heart Shiva, Sounds of the East, Planet Beat and the South Asia Center (UW).

Screening at 8pm, Party at 10pm

Black Rock Ranger Training in Magnuson Park

Burning Man is well known as a place where you can escape from normality and express yourself freely. It's a place where you can be somebody completely different from who you are in your comfort zone of your normal life. For some people that crazy alter ego may express itself in wanting to be a ranger - a Black Rock Ranger!

The Black Rock Ranger Training in Seattle will be held in Magnuson Park in the Sand Point neighborhood of Seattle this Saturday at 10am.

WHO: All area new and returning rangers should plan to go to this
training. Attending a ranger training is a prerequisite for
being a Ranger on the playa.

There is a second training on August 14th that is for returning
rangers (and new rangers who've attended the first training.)
Both trainings will be different, fun, and a great way to get
into the rangering swing of things.

WHERE: We will be at Picnic Shelter #1 in Sand Point Magnuson Park.
The picnic shelter is in the SE corner of the park. Use 65th
street to enter the park, and then park and walk to the location,
there are signs inside the park, we'll be visible from the boat
ramp.

Details of the park can be found here, directions can be found
below in 'Getting There.'

http://www.cityofseattle.net/parks/parkspaces/SPMP/picnics.htm

On this map, we'll be at 'PS1' in the lower right hand corner:

http://www.cityofseattle.net/parks/parkspaces/Images/ccmap.pdf

HOW: The training runs from 10am to 4pm (ish)

You should bring everything you need for the day. This includes
all the usual stuff, water and sunscreen (hah!), a chair if you
can, food. There are five grills on site.

See http://rangers.burningman.com for more details on what to
bring to a ranger training.

AT 5 PM, the picnic site is being thrown open to the Seattle burner
community generally. All community memebers will be welcome to the
site for a LNT picnic that goes until the park closes.

I want to be one of those Black Rock Rangers! I would stop people wearing Utilikilts on the playa and give them stiff tickets. I would explain to them: "Sir, you can't wear a dress here. This is a construction site!"

Picnic Shelter #1 in Sand Point Magnuson Park, 10am to 4pm.

Captured from THE STRANGER...

JAZZANOVA
German sextet Jazzanova have risen to popularity among the nu-breaks/downtempo set with their languidly sensuous, rhythmically sophisticated tracks seemingly crafted to make you dance in your chaise longue. Jazzanova's impeccable production techniques have made them better known as remixers than for their own tracks. The soul-funk alchemy Jazzanova work in the studio also creeps into their DJ sets, as evidenced by the new ...Mixing (Sonar Kollektiv). They say that their music's essence can be discerned through their DJ sets, which reflect an eclectic, spiritual sensibility that never reaches exceedingly high peaks, nor plumbs great depths. Jazzanova don't rock the sonic boat, but their mellow, Latin-tinged pleasures consistently satisfy. -- Dave Segal

Garage Sale in West Seattle

Scott writes:

Dear Party Volcano,

We (Vuti, Matthew, David, Angela, and Me) will be having a yard sale at my home on Sun. 7/18, from 10am-5pm. As you know, our sales feature the finest vintage crap, and super-good elegant stuff. We trade for cash, liquor, candy, and erotic massage. 6549 Fauntleroy Way SW in Wonderful West Seattle! (Just west of California Ave/Fauntleroy intersection.)

Love,

Scott Greer

I used to call West Seattle "The Other Ballard" and was surprised to see that people that live in West Seattle took that as a compliment. Over time I realized that I like West Seattle better than "Ballard" and I stopped using that term. Anyways, I have been to Scott's garage sale and I always had fun. They do have a lot of super-good crap.

Dress like a Terrorist @ the Locks

David writes:

PV,

I saw this (see link below) in the paper & thought we could try to
create a subtle protest event. We could call it "Dress
like a Terrorist & go take pictures at the Locks Day
".
If you put this link on PV & the idea of everybody,
especially our friends & PV subscribers who have a
"browner" look. The rest of us could just try to look
conspicuous. Maybe it's Sunday from noon to 5:pm? I
think that it would be good if people showed up
sporadically & took pictures throughout the day.

Who's in?

Cheers,
David K

I just went to the locks a few days ago and watched the salmons swimming through the fish ladders. At my side was Ulrike Meinhof and I was considering taking hostages as Andreas Baader would have done without hesitation. But then I decided against it: I was moved by those eager fishes that were swimming against strong currents back to the place they were born just to have sex one last time and then die.

Rock Lottery @ ConWorks

Good/Bad Archive Project and Consolidated Works
present Seattle¹s first:
Rock Lottery

10am: 25 individual musiciansÅ ..10pm: 5 new bands!

The Rock Lottery is simple, but effective. Twenty-five hand picked
musicians meet at 10:00AM at the evening¹s performance venue. These
volunteers are organized into five bands through a lottery based chance
selection. The five different groups are then released to practice at
different locations. The musicians have twelve hours to create a band name
and three to five songs (with a one cover song limit). The bands will then
return to the venue and perform what they have created in front of a waiting
audience.

The twenty-five musicians included in this experiment are carefully selected
in an attempt to represent a wide variety of musical styles. This event
will bring together many facets of the music community that may seem
incompatible, as well as musicians whose interests may conflict. The
challenge for these participants is to try and go beyond their personal and
musical differences and work together to create a unified group project that
still contains the personal styles of each of its members.

The Rock Lottery has been a staple of the Denton, TX music scene since
February, 1997. The Seattle Rock Lottery is a fundraiser for both
Consolidated Works and the Good/Bad Archive Project. Participants have been
carefully chosen by Seattle luminaries Sean Nelson and Mike McGonigal.

Participants include:

Adam McDaid, Alex Cargo (Murdock), Asy (Smoosh), Barrett Wilke (Kinski),
Charlie Gocher (Sun City Girls), Chloe (Smoosh), Dan Tyack, Eric Corson (The
Long Winters), Jeff (Climax Golden Twins), Jen Wood (Aveo), Jim Roth (Built

I want to thank Ron Jeremy for the hot tip about the low tides two weekends ago. Unfortunately I did not see any naked Germans or sensitive new
age guys in utilikilts as PV led me to expect, but I did see some other
great stuff. Check out my low tide pictures at:
