Events for 7/9 to 7/15/2004

You know how the annual Burning Man camp cycle works: Burning Man - Decompression - Fundraiser - Burning Man. Right now we are at the fundraiser stage. This week Flight to Mars is hosting The Space Ball, and two weeks later the Space Virgins will have Luminous Flux.

The events that I like best this week are 14/48 and The Infernal Country Fair. There is a bunch that didn't make the list: Bollywood, MiX Nights, Circus Contraception, CoCA, Lord of the Rings by the Seattle Symphony, Rhone Rangers Grand Benefit Tasting. I would have downgraded them. But I had to add Harmony Explosion Northwest Camp (thanks Susan!).

Roq La Rue: "PAINTERS OF BLIGHT"

Roq La Rue presents a special event...

"PAINTERS OF BLIGHT"

?Curated by Erin Norlin, David Miller and Kipling West
Two Days Only!? Friday July 9 and Saturday July 10

Opening Reception: Friday, July 9, 6:00 - 10:00 pm?
Open Friday 2-10pm, sat 2-6pm

For two days only, Painters of Blight will occupy Roq la Rue Gallery, featuring two dozen artists paying tribute to the work of Thomas Kinkade and Jack T. Chick.? Don't blink and miss it!

Renowned and beloved as the "Painter of Light," Thomas Kinkade is America's best-selling fine artist.? One who purchases a reproduction of one of Mr. Kinkade's paintings may elect to have their purchase brought to life by a Kinkade-trained Master Highlighter, who adds color and definition with oil paint, truly bringing the lithographs to "light."? In that spirit, artists Jim Blanchard, Kamala Dolphin-Kingsley, Robert Hardgrave, Claire Johnson, Charles Krafft, Pat Moriarity, Erin Norlin, Marion Peck, Benton Peugh, Robert Rini, Bonni Reid, and Kipling West have highlighted pages from the Thomas Kinkade Painter of Light® with Scripture: 2004 Deluxe Wall Calendar, in their own distinct styles.?

Jack T. Chick is one of the most prolific Christian evangelists in America, spreading the good news of Jesus Christ and bad news of eternal damnation though 3" x 5", 24-page comic book tracts, and his black and white shockers form the perfrect counterpioint to Kinkade's lust pastorals.? Since 1961 he has created 175 proselytizing tracts, which have had more than 500,000,000 copies published in over 100 languages worldwide.? Artists Tom Bagley, David R. Drake, Jed Dunkerly, Nathan Eyring, Rod Filbrandt, Cliff Hare, David Lasky, Deborah F Lawrence, Eric Reynolds, Johnny Ryan and Kamilla White have each created work inspired by Chick.??

Fundraiser for MoveOn.org @ Richard Hugo House

Joe and the fictional group, Up with the Pie, will perform "Make the Pie Higher," a satirical, musical rendition of a poem that was "written" by George W. Bush. It is composed of actual statements the President made, including the title phrase, edited together by a Washington Post writer. Thomas Arthur will treat us to a sampling of his choreographed juggling routines set to the original music of Paul Ely Smith. Check out his beautiful work at thomasarthur.net.

This evening of entertainment and laughter begins with dessert, wine, and a silent auction.

The world's quickest theater festival is back. Randomly assembled teams
have 24 hours to conceive, write, design, score, rehearse, and perform
7 world-premiere plays. Then, as if that wasn't enough, they do it all
again the very next day. In 48 hours, Seattle's finest create 14
world-premiere short plays for your viewing pleasure.

Buy tickets early for this perennial favorite.

14/48 Timeline

Thursday night
Entire group assembles for beers, welcome and introduction. The participants each write down an idea for a theme for Friday night's performances. One of these themes is drawn at random from a hat. Writers draw a slip of paper giving them the number and gender of actors for whom they'll be writing. They go home to write one ten-minute play apiece on the selected theme.

Friday Morning Writers arrive with their script. Directors randomly draw a script, and randomly draw names of musicians, designers, and actors. The groups read through the plays, then disperse to separate spaces within Consolidated's facility to rehearse and produce their shows.

Friday Evening
Each show is given limited time for tech, dress rehearsal, and lighting cues. Musicians set up and rehearse. Visual artists install their pieces. Shows start at 8:00 and 10:30. Midnight: Curtain call. Applause. The next night's theme is drawn from audience suggestions, and the writers once more draw a slip of paper informing them of the number and gender of the actors for the next day's play, and return home to write.

Saturday
The process repeats on Saturday. Everything is assigned randomly, so each writer writes for a different number of people and each director works with different actors and writers.

Fundraising Garage Sale in Wallingford.

Jamie writes:

Hi all,

It turns out that 2 of my roommates and I are into our 4th for more than $1800 in back utility bills (yikes!). We are planning on having a big garage sale at our house in Wallingford the weekend of the 10th and 11th of July to help raise money to start chipping away at that balance.

Although all are welcome to come and persouse our goods and buy stuff, what we really need are donations of stuff to contribute to the sale. We'll take anything you want to get rid of, provided it does not belong in the dump.

You can either drop it off at our place or if it's a lot of stuff I can pick it up in my subie wagon.

We are at:
2214 N. 38th
between Corliss and Bagley in Wallingford

We appreciate any help we can get as we are all broke!

Send me an e-mail if you'd like to contribute.

Thank you thank you!
