Events for 8/28/03 to 9/3/03

Another slow week. It feels even slower after returning from a trip to a big German city. This year I unfortunately didn’t have enough time to visit my favorite bars in Hamburg: The Golden Pudel (Der Goldene Pudel) and Mother (Mutter). At least I was able to stop by at the Toast Bar (see Cold Lava).

My favorite event this week is “Buttock Karaoke” hosted by Three Imaginary Girls. Party Volcano volunteer Heather wrote a funny blurb about it as well as a comment about POINT BREAK LIVE. Thanks so much, Heather.

Gallery of Collections and Creations at Bumbershoot

If you are planning on going to Bumbershoot you should swing by at the Lopez Room (in the Northwest Rooms, corner of Republican and 1st Ave near Key Arena, Seattle Center), where SOIL members are showing their latest projects.
For example Randy Wood is showing "bye bye little drawing!":

The show is done and up! Whoo-hoo. You can check out my newest project "bye bye little drawing!" which I'll be taking around NYC Sept 8-13 (more to come on that).

Hours are 2-6pm

Crespinel Studios (right next to Roq la Rue) 2316 2nd Ave Seattle WA 98121

Saturday,8/30.

Opening: Body Worlds @ Erotic Art Museum in Hamburg (Germany).

When I was in Hamburg last week the the city just approved this very controversial exhibition featuring real corpses:

Until recently the privilege to view corpses and the human body’s interior has been confined to medicine students and anatomists in dissection rooms. It is only due to the invention of plastination that the general public is now also able to enjoy fascinating insights into the human body. The plastination technique thus made a considerable contribution to health education.

In 1977, Gunther von Hagens invented the plastination technique which marked the beginning of a second anatomical revolution. Andreas Vesalius who created precise anatomical drawings as early as in 1543 was the pioneer of modern anatomy. Since then human corpses have slowly disappeared again from the human eye with the establishment of medical schools. A taboo emerged.

Gunther von Hagens’ plastinated bodies obviously touch upon this taboo and trigger controversial reactions throughout the world. The high number of visitors, however, proves the general population’s need to learn more about the structure and functions of their bodies."

Since the first exhibition in Mannheim in 1997 more than 12 million people have viewed the interior of the human body. The BODY WORLDS is hence the most successful touring exhibition world-wide.

One question remains: Where did Mr. Hagens get all those corpses from?

Fremont Outdoor Movies: The Wizard of Oz.

A classic: Dorothy Gale is swept away to a magical land in a tornado and embarks on a quest to see the Wizard who can help her return home. Some people believe they have discovered bizarre coincidences after listening to Pink Floyd's album “The Dark Side of the Moon” while watching “The Wizard of Oz”. So don’t forget to bring your CD player if you want to test their theory.

Parking lot across from OLD Redhook Trolleyman Pub at N. 35th and Phinney Ave. Bring your own seating (Small compact seating please, this years venue is smaller by half). $5, 7:30pm.

Weapons of Misdestruction @ Jewel Box Theatre (Rendezvous)

Somebody named Monkeybicycle has invited 300 people to this event. So far seven said they would come. I have no idea what this is about:

Sadam ain't got nuthin on us. Come one, come all, to the literary event that will have Seattle duck 'n covering for years to come. Monkeybicycle presents the swashbuckling sounds of Uncle Leuschner and The Chris Complex, playing along side the wonderful war-driven talents of Barb Klansnic, Ed Page, Aaron Burch, and Monkeybike miscreants Shya Scanlon and Steven Seighman. This event is super-significant in that it marks The Last Night Steven will be in our ranks. He's moving to NYC to spread the Monkey word. Come help us gnaw through his umbilical cord.

POINT BREAK LIVE @ @ The Little Theatre

I never really thought Point Break was an extraordinary movie - certainly not good enough to warrant a play, yet here we are. However, the genius of POINT BREAK LIVE isn't that it transforms a high fructose action movie into a compelling play - the genius is in how enthusiastically the play embraces all the sugary elements of the action flick and its vapid star Keanu Reaves. Playing up the sexual undercurrent (only Top Gun surpasses Point Break in unintentional homoerotism), the over the top action sequences and “I just showed up and read my lines” acting of Keanu Reaves POINT BREAK LIVE is stupidly fun. Plus in a stroke of genius there is a whole new bunch of Keanu’s rotating the part of Johnny Utah. And for gawd sake rent the movie before you go.

DORKBOT Exhibition Closing Party @ CoCA

The organizers of Dorkbot-Sea are a couple of very creative types up to a very interesting venture: providing a forum for all sorts of folks doing odd, vaguely electricity-related stuff. In the past few months since starting to host Dorkbot-Sea they have managed to generate a lot of underground buzz. Most definitely worth checking out. Here’s what they say about this Wednesday’s event:

Anna Oxygen, Mutant Data Orchestra with samplemeister Otis F. Odder, DJ Ario and dj gLoRy B (host of KBCS 91.3 FM’s late-night Remedy) take control for the “people doing strange things with electricity” closing party on WEDNESDAY, 3RD SEPTEMBER from 8.00 PM UNTIL LATE. Come down to CoCA to grab a beer or a cocktail, say THANK YOU to our exhibiting artists and to CoCA for being such phenomenal hosts, take one last look at the weird and wonderful things we featured in the show, and start Fall in style. Admission is FREE, and artists will be on hand to talk if you missed them at our record-breaking opening. This is your first post-Bumbershoot, post-Burning Man decompression opportunity; balm for the tired and emotional soul – and an ideal venue for any el-wire or blinky lights that survived the Playa. It’s also your last chance to take in the showNote that this closing/thank-you party replaces this month’s regular dorkbot meeting – regular progr! amming resumes on the first Wednesday in October (10/01). Lastly, please do take a moment to send your RSVP for the party to dorkbotsea@dorkbot.org; it helps tremendously with planning. See you at CoCA on the 3rd!

CoCA, 1420 11th Ave (between Pike and Union on Capitol Hill), 8:00 pm, Free, although Dorkbot would appreciate a RSVP at dorkbotsea@dorkbot.org for planning purposes.

Cold Lava

Toast Bar (Hamburg, Germany) on 5/9/2002 and 5/13/2003.

Last year in may I confessed I want to suffer for my sins at a bar in Hamburg called Toast Bar:

At the end of Bunuel's "Simon of the Desert", Simon finds himself in hell - a New York jazz club. Party Volcano wants to spend eternity at a place called Toastbar. It's more or less a living room with a bartender. The floor is covered with peanut shells and on the wall is a sign that reminds everybody on what life is about:

"We strongly believe that any movement starts with singing in groups".

Toast Bar Wohlwillstrasse, Hamburg (Germany). Free.

Simon of the Desert: http://us.imdb.com/Title?0059719

I was glad to learn that it hasn't really changed. I'll see you in hell!
