Events for 9/4/03 to 9/10/03

Another late edition due to work related deadlines. We missed telling you about some Art Walk events on Thursday 9/4: JAG Design Studio was having an opening and Luscious Studio was presenting "I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S NOT FAKE BUTTER, FUCKER". We also got a sweet invitation for the same evening from the Noc-Noc crew.

Did you know that Vital 5 Productions is back? About a year ago they closed their gallery at the corner of Westlake and Denny to take a break from the hectic life of organizing and hosting art and theatre events and fashion shows. This morning I found a postcard from them in my mail. They have launched a new website called www.Vital5Productions.com . You can read about the new Arbitrary Art Grant, a new play written by Greg Lundgren, and up and coming productions.

Benefit for AHAC @ AFTERMATH

Loss Leader Presents:

A Benefit for Alternative Healthcare Access Campaign (AHAC)
Featuring
HINT HINT
TOURIST
TRIUMPH OF LETHARGY SKINNED ALIVE TO DEATH (featuring Spencer of Murder City Devils)
$6. Doors at 8pm. All Ages.

HINT HINT jerk their way through darkened melodies like a timed musical seizure, layering haunting keyboard patches over robotic stops and starts.
This is the sound of man shaking to the machine, set at a sinister distance from synthesized acts which have come in and out of vogue as of late.
Opening the show are two new local up-and-comers, TOURIST and TRIUMPH OF LETHARGY SKINNED ALIVE TO DEATH (featuring Spencer Moody on vocal duties).

The mission of ALTERNATIVE HEALTHCARE ACCESS CAMPAIGN (AHAC) is to increase the accessibility of quality alternative healthcare for homeless and low-income people. AHAC was initially formed in August 1999 by a small group of students and homeless advocates, who were concerned that the benefits of alternative healthcare were becoming exclusively available to the wealthier segments of society. Previously, the Sound Clinic provided full service alternative and conventional healthcare to the downtown Seattle community until its closure in 1997, which created a void in accessible alternative healthcare for low-income & homeless people. One of AHAC's primary goals is to establish onsite clinical services at social service centers for low-income and homeless people to help address this need.

Andrea Koster’s Ladies' Waterfront Brunch @ Anthony’s Homeport

Andrea Koster runs Space City Mixer (SCM). She had been organizing social events for freeunder the name "Pub Mixer" until she quit her job and decided to do professionally what she likes to do and what she is good at: organizing social events. Some of her events have been targets for Party Volcano downgrades (like the cop strippers). This event actually sounds like a good idea:

Ladies' Waterfront Brunch!

Just the Girls for this one. Catch up on your girl talk and meet some other interesting women! Join us at Anthony's Homeport in Ballard for a late morning brunch. Pre-mingling time will start at 10:30 am; we’ll sit down for a tasty brunch at 11:00 am.
Our section of the restaurant will overlook the water - the view is wonderful!

BACKGROUND:
SCM thought that it would be fun to have a brunch just for the women. Many women have said that they wished that they knew other female friends in order that they have someone with whom to attend parties, Pub Mixers, explore Seattle, etc. A lot of people have moved here for jobs from out of town and it's not always easy to find your peers when you work long hours and don't have co-workers that you necessarily want to have as friends. So this is the idea behind the brunches - to eat a tasty brunch and meet some fun, smart & interesting women!

When: September 7, Sun (10:30 AM Optional Mingling / 11:00 AM Brunch)
Where: Anthony’s Homeport on Shilshole at 6135 Seaview Ave NW.
Take I-5 North, take the 45th St Exit (you will be on 45th, heading west towards Wallingford). Follow 45th all the way through Wallingford (staying in the right hand lane under the 99 overpass). The 45th turns into 46th past 99 and then winds down a hill to the right, and turns into Market St. at the bottom of the hill (you'll be entering Ballard). Follow Market St through downtown Ballard. It will turn into Seaview Ave. On Seaview Ave, go 1/2 a mile, and Anthony's will on your left hand side (next door to Ray's Boathouse). Their number is: 206.783.0780
Cost: $21 (Pre-Paid only). Includes tax & gratuity.
Attendee Limit: 30
Signup: Add yourself to the Evite
Payment Instructions: Visit the Web site under Payments. Cancellation policy

The Center of Gravity @ Richard Hugo House

Richard Hugo House and Golden Fish Theatre will present a staged reading of Gregory Hischak’s award-winning play, The Center of Gravity,
At 7:30 p.m. Sept. 7. Hugo House is at 1634 11th Ave., in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. Admission is by $5 donation at the door.

The Center of Gravity, which earlier this year won Hugo House’s fifth annual new Play Competition, is set in Kitty Hawk, N.C., and spans from 1870 to the 1940s in dramatizing the story of Wilbur and Orville Wright, their mother, and Margot, the girl next door.

A panel of Northwest theater professionals selected The Center of Gravity from more than 40 original, unproduced and full-length plays submitted by playwrights in Washington, Oregon, Montana, Idaho and Alaska. Hischak won $1,000 and the reading, which will be created by members of the Golden Fish
Theatre Company.

Hischak, a Seattle (Capitol Hill) resident by way of Dayton, Ohio, is a designer-turned-writer best known for his work editing the zine Farm Pulp. He has also been featured on Mirth of a Nation and in The Stranger, Exquisite Corpse and local poetry slams.

The Center of Gravity was born out of Hischak’s love of historical characters: “I like writing for voices other than my own, doing research, working at material over and over again,” he says. “It’s interesting to challenge an audience’s preconceived notion of a character.”

Hischak took the lives of fellow Daytonians Wilbur and Orville Wright (“really boring — just engineers”) and added drama and controversy, testing the idea as poem and prose before deciding to create a play. “Seattle has a great theater community,” he says. “There’s lots of reinforcement here.”

Hugo House is at 1634 11th Ave
