Thursday 9/12.

Photo Journalism Opening @ Hopvine.

Amanda Koster is recommending this opening:

I wanted to let you know I will be in a group show with "Seattle's finest journalistic and newspaper photographs'" (Just a punch line- there are MANY more here in Seattle!) at the Hopvine Pub. Most of the photographers are from Seattle Times/Seattle PI, and a few others shooters like myself.

The show is up now and the opening reception is this Thursday, 9/12 from 7pm onwards. If you have never been to the Hopvine it is a very nice, low-key pub. If nothing else it would be nice to see you all.

The Hopvine Pub, 507 15th Ave. East, on Capitol Hill, North of Republican Ave, 7pm, free.

Original Pub Mixer @ Club Medusa

September's Original Pub Mixer will be at the brand new Club Medusa in Downtown Seattle This may actually be good, because it offers a way to get in free to check out a new night club. (If you come between 7 and 9pm and say you are with "Pub Mixer").

Here's Andrea's email:

It's a swanky new Vegas-style club that just opened up. It's only open on Thu, Fri and Sat nights and usually packed all three nights. There's also a cover between $10-15 just to get in so but for the Pub Mixer, it's Free! They're letting us come since we'll be their "early" crowd so if you arrive between 7pm and 9pm (and say you're there for the "Pub Mixer"), you'll get in without the cover. After 9pm, anyone entering will be charged their regular cover.

They have a pretty strict dress code: no jeans, t-shirts, tennis shoes or baseball caps. So, I'd say if you get dressed up a little more than usual, you'll be fine!

Club Medusa, 2218 Western Ave, Between Bell & Lenora in Downtown Seattle. 7pm.

"What Does and Does Not Make News in the Art World" @ SAM.

Milton Esterow, editor and publisher of ARTnews, talks about the mysteries behind the scenes at a place where tips and press releases turn into the stuff we read about:

For the past thirty years, Milton Esterow has been editor and publisher of ARTnews, the oldest and most widely circulated fine art magazine in the world. Celebrating its one hundredth anniversary this year, ARTnews has documented changes in the art world over the past ten decades and the changing perception of art, which the magazine has both mirrored and helped mold. Sponsored by the Contemporary Art Council.

Seattle Art Museum, 100 University St., Seattle, $2-$7, 7:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

ConWorks Reopening Gala Night.

K.D. points out that there is an opening party at ConWorks. This should be a good party, but, nonetheless, I'm inclined to skip it because it costs $10. But I could be dragged to it, if a consensus builds and we hear some good party reports from it.

Let's see what they are offering:

The paint is almost dry, the sheetrock is all sheetrocked, and there are only a fews days left until ConWorks' gala grand re-opening party! It's going to be a massive affair, a party like no other. It all starts at 6pm, with the opening of Binocular Parallax - the visual arts exhibit co-curated by the lovely and talented Meg Shiffler and Vancouver, BC's Jonathan Middleton. it's gonna be cool.

At 8pm, Greg Nickels will be officially getting the party started with a ceremonial ribbon cutting. There will be bands, dj's, art, and weirdness in abundance.

Beth needs a small army of volunteers. The more, the merrier. Here is her plan:

So the plan is, on Friday, September 13th, we get as many volunteers as we can to ConWorks by 5.30, so we can have a pep rally, and make sure we all have the same sense of the plan, and make sure people with shift-times know when their shift-times are, then we have a small, respectful time with the art, then at 8ish, the madness begins. Bartenders and Box Office Hotties will have specific, 2hour shifts. Karma Patrol is more of a full time job. People who choose to do this can still be partying, but do so carefully, and make sure no one gets out of control, or too too messy.

Please contact Beth (intricky@attbi.com) or Robin (robin@conworks.org) if you are interested in volunteering at this event.

Consolidated Works, 500 Boren Avenue North, between Mercer Street and Republican Street, in the South Lake Union neighborhood, 8 PM, $10.

Blurred "Wrap" Party @ CoCA.

CoCA mumbles:

Super-weird computer music "wrap" party for CoCA's stunning Blurred
exhibit. The bill is Coterie Exchange(with Sharon Cheslow and Miya Zane Osaki from SF), Bill Horist & Mike Peterson, Electric Birds, Mesh(from SF-Dial Records). Randy Jones DJs between bands.
Mesh is the San Francisco experimental computer music duo of Mike Donovan and Luke Calzonetti. Mike runs Dial Records which has put out releases by Blectum From Blechdom and his band The Church Steps (who also have a release on Flapping Jet). Special Guests School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Alumni.

CoCA, 1420 11th Ave (between Pike and Union on Capitol Hill), 9pm.

Interpol @ Graceland.

Gopi wanted to let you all know of a good show at Graceland on Friday:

The critics are wetting their pants over this new group from NYC. They have been compared to Joy Division & the Smiths. Catch them before they become the next Strokes. :) Hope you can make it to the show. If many people are interested I could suggest a place to get together for pre-show drinks. Let me know. Please pass this to anyone else who might be interested.

Party Volcano's music reporter David Kelly approves:

I predict that Interpol is the next big thing. The Strokes, the White Stripes & the Hives all played Graceland just weeks before hitting it big & then they played much bigger places next time through. Same goes for the Shins. They are in line just ahead of Interpol. I can't vouch for their live show, but I've heard it's good. If you want to have that "I saw them when they played clubs" experience to tell your grand kids about, here's your chance. Have fun!

Interpol, Heather Duby, Long Winters at 9 p.m. $8adv.
Graceland, 109 Eastlake Ave E.

Saturday 9/14.

Cirque de Broadway Street Festival.

Kind of a "modern urban circus" and community arts festival with music, performance, art and food. It’s a Street Fest with 4 stages of entertainment (Main Stage, Blues Stage, "Performance" stage [theatre/comedy], and a Poetry/Slam Stage), Art Exhibits, Food & Craft Vendors, 2 Beer Gardens, Activities for the Kids, and more...

Broadway Avenue East between East John and East Mercer streets. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sat., 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sun. http://www.digitalcity.com/seattle/family/event.adp?eid=538712

El Fuego @ The Industrial Arts Factory.

An evening of fiery entertainment, drinking, dancing, and wrangling. Sci-fi and western themed costumes are encouraged:

El Fuego promises to be an unforgettable night of fire performance. Forget what you've seen, forget what you've heard- and prepare to immerse yourself into a world where aliens, robots, and fire are played out in the throes of a futuristic western civilization. El Fuego will feature dj's, installation art, a full bar, and more fun then you can shake a flaming cattle prod at!

I don't know, this sounds awful:

When a powerful crime lord dispatches his group of thugs to pull off a bank job on a distant backwater planet, all hell breaks loose as good and evil clash in traditional spaghetti western style. Despite having the local deputy in his pocket, the bandit leader soon finds that not all of the locals are willing to just turn tail and run, and he soon finds himself in a struggle against two ranch hands that turn out to be a bit more than they seem.

As the desert spirits start their fiery dance, the question is... "is anything more or less than it appears?"

The Industrial Arts Factory @ 3427 4th Avenue South.
Doors open at 8:30 pm. El Fuego presented at 11:30 pm.
Tickets are $15.00 advance $17.50 at the door.

Chicago 7 Short Film Series @ CoCA.

CoCA is showing "Chicago 7 Short Film Series with Live Performances by Red Fish Blue Fish & Cartoonist Randy Wood". That's pretty much what we able to decipher from CoCA's last weird email. What are those guys smoking? They used with white letters on white background. It's a shame, because I believe that this event will be actually pretty interesting. How do I know? Randy Wood was so kind to send us this link: http://www.kathrynbertram.com/filmfest_chicago.html .
