Events For 9/26 to 9/30/2002

There is not much going on this weekend. This is the time of the year when you stay at home and read Rilke. This poem is one of my favorites...

Autumn Day

Lord: it is time. The summer was immense.
Lay your shadow on the sundials
and let loose the wind in the fields.

Bid the last fruits to be full;
give them another two more southerly days,
press them to ripeness, and chase
the last sweetness into the heavy wine.
Whoever has no house now will not build one anymore.

Whoever is alone now will remain so for a long time,
will stay up, read, write long letters,
and wander the avenues, up and down,
restlessly, while the leaves are blowing.

- Rainer Maria Rilke

Thursday 9/26.

Women of Iron Benefit Party @ Showbox.

This is my pick for Thursday - not there would be any other choices, though. Maggy invites us to her the Women of Iron Benefit Party:

The coolest calendar you'll ever see! I have been shooting a portrait project about women metal workers here in Seattle. I am nearly done! The project celebrates the strong, talented, beautiful women who hammer out metal every day. Tough and rewarding work. And nobody knows just how many of these talented babes there are! We are producing a caledar of the work, exhibition of the prints, and postcard sets. A PERCENTAGE OF THE PROCEEDS WILL GO TO WASHINGTON WOMEN IN TRADES to support grants for women who want to get into non-traditional fields like metal work. We need help. Piles of expenses and no funds. You are it!

You won't be dissappointed. Great and wierd entertainment, huge raffle, auction, dj's, dancers, etc.... The raffle includes gift certificates to boutiques, salons, massage, theater, t-shirts, vibrators, dinner, tools, gloves, and more. Auction will include a few tantalizing dates, Tool boxes, original fine art, who knows- DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING YOU CAN DONATE?????????

This is her last big bruhaha (and favorite photo project ever) before she moves to NYC on Nov.1. Please come and support her.

The Showbox - 7pm start, $10.

Friday 9/27.

10th Annual They Shoot Painters Don't They? Painting Marathon @Pratt.

I have never been to one of those annual Painting Marathons. It might be fun:

This year the public will be welcome during the entire 24 hours.
The public is welcome to drop in to support their favorite artists and
preview the works in progress for the Auction. Be a muse, a model, pose
au naturel, fetch coffee or sneak them a sip of spirits or a smoke -
whatever keeps the artists stimulated throughout the night. Spirits are
available during legal hours.

Reading a CoCA announcement is always challenging. This week's riddle is: What are the tickets good for? Marathon? Auction? Both? At least they didn't use "secret ink" when they wrote the email.

Marathon Fri 9AM to Sat 9AM @ Pratt Fine Arts Center 19th Ave S and South Main St.
Auction Sat 7PM at CoCA, 1420 11th Ave (between Pike and Union on Capitol Hill).
Tickets: $12.

"Soundscapes" @ Berkeley Art Museum (SFO).

This event is in San Francisco. San Francisco-based sound artist Aaron Ximm (Quiet American) will present an evening of soundscapes composed from field recordings, also known as 'found sound,' in response to the work of Vincent Fecteau, MATRIX Exhibition 199 artist, whose recent sculpture are on display at the museum until October 6th.

Vincent Fecteau is a San Francisco-based artist known for his small-scale, meticulously hand-assembled two- and three- dimensional objects. His early works are subtle interventions into found images; featuring collage elements, often pasted onto foamcore structures, they take inspiration from popular culture, sappy commercial photography, and architecture and design journals. One series used thousands of magazine cutouts of cat faces pasted onto the wall and ! stacked on the floor. Such collage works function more as drawings than as sculptures. More recent works, however, focus on the structures themselves.

Berkeley Art Museum, Gallery 1, 2626 Bancroft Way, Berkeley, CA.

Manslaughter @ Vital 5.

Vital 5 Productions proudly presents "Manslaughter" - a degenerate play written and directed by Greg Lundgren:

a Hooker
a Billionaire
Crack Cocaine
a Candy Bar and
a 9mm Handgun

Wanna Date?

I went to the world premiere of Manslaughter last week. It was amazing. You have to go. In fact I might go again. What is it about? Greg has been very upfront about warning it might not be everyone's cup of tea. Yes, there is explicit violence, sex, and drug use. But I think everybody can handle gun shots, screams, and Snickers Bars.

This play is not about violence. It is once again about "Fake or Real?", which seems to be Vital 5's big theme. You are sitting inside Vital 5's gallery and you are watching Sherry, a street hooker, working at the corner of 9th and Westlake. You hear everything that is happening on the street. Sometimes she would leave the scene and you wouldn't be able to see her. But the audio part continues and you will hear what she is doing or what other people are doing to her.

This setting creates the playground in which the audience's sense for what is "fake" and "real" is being destroyed. You never know whether the action you are seeing or hearing is part of the play or pure coincidence. Are those joggers real? Who would jog at 9pm in this shady part of town? A car stops at Sherry's corner and then suddenly takes off. A real customer realizing that Sherry is fake? Or is Greg just fucking with us by throwing in a fake customer? At one point I got really confused after a guy in an SUV was asking Sherry: "What are these guys inside [the gallery] paying you for doing this?"

Manslaughter is a masterpiece. Parts of me want to go back and see one of the two remaining shows just to figure out what was Manslaughter and what was random. But in the end it doesn't really matter: fake is reality and reality is fake.

Vital 5, 2200 Westlake Avenue, Seattle (on the Southeast corner of Denny and Westlake Ave.). The doors open at 7:00 and the show starts at 8:00. There are two shows left, Friday and Saturday. Be warned: Graphic violence, drug use and sexual content may be offensive to some audience members.
