Events for Thurs 5/23 to Sat 5/25, 2002

There's not a hec of a lot going on this Memorial Day Weekend, but we give you what we got, baby. Here we go:

Thursday, 5/23

Sattelites 2002 Opening Party @ The Little Theatre. In a way you have to admire Microcinematic’s balls. They pick the opening night for their itsy-bitsy film festival on the opening night of the world famous behemothic Seattle International Film Festival. Well, I guess if you are going up against the big boys, you better make your opening free—and include free food and drinks--instead of the $40 ticket price for SIFF’s opening gala tonight. From now until June 12 at various venues, Microcinematic’s will present off-beat film and video features. As the name “Microcinematic” implies these flicks are way, way, way off the Hollywood--or for that matter Sundancey and SIFF-y indie--circuit. The Little Theatre, 608 - 19th Ave. E. 206.675.2055, 8 to 11 PM, Free (includes food and drinks!) Acoustic music @ Aftermath. Aftermath Gallery is hosting a band called “What’s Missing” for an acoustic set. PV can’t vouch for the band, but can say that Aftermath is a cool space for a gig. Aftermath Gallery 928 12th Ave. www.aftermathgallery.com

Friday, 5/24

MAC Productions Fashion Show @ New Holly. Carlisia Minnis will be presenting a fashion show of women’s clothing. One of the things that makes this interesting is that instead of staging the show in the typical Capitol Hill hair salon, hipster bar, art gallery, etc.—Minnis is showing her work at New Holly Neighborhood Campus which is a “mixed income” housing project in Rainier Valley, originally built as public housing in the 1940’s. It’s in the hood! PV is excited because this reminds us of Jean Paul Gaultier’s early shows in out of the way locations—like meat packing plants or abandoned factories. Minnis says you should attend “because the ladies will be fly and the gents will be dipped!” PV plans on being there and being dipped. New Holly Neighborhood Campus 7050 32nd Ave S, Seattle [32nd Ave S & Othello, btwn Beacon Ave & MLK Way] $20 in advance / $25 at door. For more info and advance tix call: 206.322.2147 Flyer:

Gaultier Ready to Wear, Spring 2002: http://www.firstview.com/WRTWspring2002/JEAN_PAUL_GAULTIER/index.html

Video artist Robert Campbell; Maureen Whiting Dance Co; K.D.Schill and Sarah Harlett Installation @ Jack Straw New Media Gallery. Party Volcano has now attended this event twice (it happens every Friday in May) and last week, for the second time, PV was as impressed as the first. If you are looking for excellent High Brow art, capital “H”, capital “B”, this is it. The video is gorgeous—it has echoes of Tarkovsky’s film “Solyaris”—dream-like, slow moving. The reoccurring motif of vividly colored peeling paint is strangely haunting—decrepitude merging into beauty. After the screening, some of the dancers who appear in the video piece will give a live dance performance in the installation, the beautiful costumes for which were designed by K.D. Schill. Seeing the dance performance and video in conjunction makes both more resonant. For serious art, this receives PV’s Hot Lava Recommendation. Screening of the video at 8 PM, followed by live dance performance. Free. Jack Straw New Media Gallery, 4261 Roosevelt Way NE (in the University District)

MFA 2002 Exhibit Opening at Henry Art Gallery. Twenty-three School of Art graduates of the Ceramics, Fibers, Metals, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, and Visual Communication Design Programs will be represented at the Henry Art Gallery. The art will probably not be that great. But you never know. Maybe some of those young artists may decide to move into the Henry Art Gallery dressed as lobsters and build their own little lobster houses – ! like Bill Kofmehl did at the Carnegie Mellon University.

Henry Art Gallery, 15th Ave NE at 41st NE, 5-8pm. Free, I guess.

Gregory Hischak & WordCore @ Odd Duck Studios. Hischak publishes a zine called “Farm Pulp” and we really don’t know anything about him or his zine, but The Stranger digs him (http://www.thestranger.com/current/stranger_suggests.html) . And in the spirit of offering you maximum choices, we pass it on to you. Odd Duck Studios, 10th & Union, 8 PM, $6, info: 206-860-3568.

“Teknolust" Movie @ the Henry Art Gallery. There’s a veritable shit storm of movies going on this weekend with the behemoth SIFF kicking into. But we thought we would throw this in because it’s running in conjunction with the Henry’s interesting exhibition “Gene(sis): Contemporary Art Explores Human Genomics.” This is what the Henry says about “Teknolust”: “A futuristic sci-fi thriller in which scientist Tilda Swinton has created three clones of herself, who don't quite behave as planned. She plays all 4 characters. Co-presented with SIFF.” At the Henry Art Gallery, Henry Art Gallery, 206-543-2280 206-616-2091, for more info...

The Paper or Plastic Fashion Show @ Vital 5. This is what V5 says: “Vital 5 Productions is proud to present the fashion show that's certain to re-ignite the widespread debate between couture philosophers and grocery store clerks alike. Plastic or paper? Over thirty local designers, artists and fashion pioneers step up to the plate to create outfits constructed entirely of paper and plastic bags.” Vital 5 events are usually a blast and this one should be too. Vital 5, 2200 Westlake [Southeast corner of Westlake and Denny]. Doors open at 7 PM. Models hit the catwalk at 8 PM. Cost: $10

This reminds Party Volcano of a secretive Vital 5 event held last Saturday. In last week’s newsletter, we reported on a rumor of a party called “Peek-a-boo” and wondered if our highly sophisticated party analysis software was buggy, because at the time of printing, we could not confirm anything. Turns out our software--which uses several complicated algorithms based on chaos theory--was working just fine. Our undercover party reporter, Immannuel Kant managed to track down the source of the rumor to Vital 5, last Saturday. It was a one-time event thrown by the talented photographer Christine Taylor as a farewell hug/kiss/grope to the local arts community (Ms. Taylor moves to Chicago mid-summer). Kant reported that it was unlike any Seattle party he has been to: “Lots of girls in pasties, erotic art, drinking, dancing, a make-out room. But what really made it atypical, was that people actually cut loose and flirted! You would have thought we were in New York or Miami or even Cleveland, instead of the Northwest.” In an exclusive post-function interview with Kant, Ms. Taylor said: “This is my farewell to the Seattle art’s community. I wanted to do something that brought people together.” Party attendee, William Blake, summed up the night’s vibe: “The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom.” Did you miss out on Peek-a-boo? Don’t sweat—you can still participate by purchasing a poster ($10) or tee shirt ($13).
