Events for Thurs May 16 to Sat May 19, 2002

Thanks to many external contributors like Meghan, Chris, Barbara, and Franz we were able to compile this long list. Thanks everybody! Please feel free to send us your ideas and suggestions. Let’s get started…

Thursday, 5/16.

2nd annual SF Docfest (5/16-5/21). If you will be in SF from May 16 - May 21 you will be lucky enough to catch the 2nd annual SF Docfest (www.sfindie.com). Six days of documentary films about such wonderful things as backyard wrestling, polygamy, fake German soldiers, They might Be Giants, and Star Wars freaks. Plus, plus, plus, there will be plenty of after-parties:

Fri May 17 @ Jezebel1s Joint 510 Larkin at Turk: DJs Pimprock and Rodent.

Sat May 18 @ Studio Z: Ambient GrooveTemple, one of the hottest monthly trance/dnb parties in the Bay Area.

Sun May 19 @ Studio Z: Indie/Alt Rock with live performances by Table 5, The Night Watchmen, Tracey, Wiggum, Rust Belt Music, Old Core.

Say Hello to Molii Molitov for us!

The Mighty Shinies @CoCA. I have seen better CoCA invitations: “Last week with Mula and Roma was great. Don't miss this one: Thursday May 16th CoCA-Motion night #2 will be The Mighty Shinies. Lead by Rhonda Pelikan of Crypt Kicker Five noteriaty this is a very catchy pop band with just the right amount of grit. They'll be having a CD out soon. Also appearing is Full Rotor.” Notice that The Mighty Shinies will also play for free at the outdoor stage at 43rd and Brooklyn during the U-District Fair on Sunday 5/19 at 6pm. Collectors of unimportant insider information from Seattle’s music scene will be excited about this little note from one of the band members: “We got involved because this guy Chip runs the space [CoCA], and he was in a band with my singer Rhonda back in the day. The incestuous Seattle music scene goes on and on....”

CoCA, 1420 11th Avenue. Show starts around 10pm, $5 and free for CoCA members.

Forbidden Film screening/Live Music/DJ's. “Set your phasers for ‘fun’, and get ready to attend that ‘other’ Premiere Party! On May 16th - the evening of the priemere of George Lucas' StarWars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones - DJ SuperJew, DJ EZ-Action and Killing Frenzy Visuals will present excerpts from the Turkish version of the original Star Wars (1977) at the Rendezvous Jewel Box Theater.”

“Our feature starts at 9pm, with frequent Intermissions throughout the evening. See things that George Lucas should sue us for, but is too embarrassed to acknowledge as existing. Do things that you can deny the same way.”

Apparently this event will be televised by local Seattle FOX affiliate, Q-13. Come early and show up on the 10-o-clock news!

Rendezvous Jewel Box Theater. 2320 2nd Ave. Free (donation suggested). Costumes encouraged.

Friday, 5/17.

LAVA (Fri-Sat). Also this Friday and Saturday at Noodle Works is LAVA (I wonder if they got this idea from us?) a two-day show from some of the best artists inSeattle.

From their site: “LAVA 2002, will present contemporary artwork by thirty-eight Seattle artists, whose work is collectively shaping the Northwest art scene… LAVA 2002 will offer a glimpse at some of the most innovative sculpture, installation, photography, video, digital, paintingand performance art… For this special weekend event, these artists will merge to present work that responds specifically to the space, to each other's work or work that moves outside their recognized mode of experimentation.”

There will be a Preview Art Talk on Thursday but it will be by invitation only.

Noodleworks,8026th Ave S, www.ultrahappy.com/lava/, lava2002arts@yahoo.com.

Friday May17, 7-11pm, Saturday May 18, 6-11pm. Free.

Roq La Rue: Draw. Accorrding to the gallery owners Draw is about “Delightful Doodles, Dangerous Drawings, and Scintillating Sketches… Roq La Rue Gallery is very pleased to present a group show entitled ‘Draw’- opening Friday May 17th. The theme of the show is drawings and features exemplary work by internationally famous artists and up and coming local talents. We will have drawings and sketches by Mark Ryden, Charles Burns, Jim Woodring, Glenn Barr,Yumiko Kayukawa, and Blair Wilson among many others.”

Mark Ryden is brilliant. You have probably seen some of his paintings with miniature Lincolns and kids playing with big slices of meat. One of favorites is The Butcher Bunny.
Roq La Rue Gallery, 2224 2nd Ave (next to Lava Lounge), 6pm, free. www.roqlarue.com

Li’l Red Shack Gallery: Marc Lawrence & KeithTabellione. “Marc Lawrence's work obsessively explores the signs and symbols that decorate the city by integrating light, composition, and colorwith these ordinary visual elements that permeate a city existence… Tabellione contains and seals personal objects and consequently memories into jars, which create an enveloping environment that allows the viewers to examine their own memories and history.”

Tabellione reminds me on a friend of mine, who once pretended he had been collecting his fingernails in a big jar for years. I believed him and I didn’t think there was anything wrong with it. But everybody else seemed to be disgusted by the idea and my friend was pleased with the results of his social experiment. What’s wrong with collecting personal objects and consequently memories into jars?

Li'l Red Shack Gallery, 1028 1st Ave S (one block N. of Safeco Field). Free.

Video artist Robert Campbell; Maureen Whiting Dance Co; K.D.Schill and Sarah Harlett Installation @ Jack Straw New Media Gallery. Party Volcano checked this out last Friday and was very impressed. If you are looking for excellent High Brow art, capital “H”, capital “B”, this is it. The video is gorgeous—it had echoes of Tarkovsky’s film “Solyaris”—dream-like, slow moving. The reoccurring motif of vividly colored peeling paint is strangely haunting—decrepitude merging into beauty. After the screening, some of the dancers who appear in the video piece will give a live dance performance in the installation—which makes for both works being more resonant. PV is there…again! Screening of the video at 8 PM, followed by live dance performance. Free. Jack Straw New Media Gallery, 4261 Roosevelt Way NE (in the University District)

Pirate's Lair Party @FuNC. Last week, PV went from a low FuNC diet to a medium FuNC diet. But after attending the Mama's House Party at FuNC, last Friday, we are scaling back--not all the way down to low again, but certainly not staying at medium. Let's call it Medium-Low. Considering the Mamaa's House Party, here's our analysis of a FuNC-based diet:

The benefits of a FuNC diet: Amusing people like the fellow who asked PV for a cigarette. This guy was presently on the patch to try to quit smoking, but hadn't worn it that evening so he could look good in his "hot mama" dress. He warned PV never to wear the patch to sleep because it causes horrific dreams. "I dreamt that my father had sex with my girlfriend and I got so angry that I murdered him by repeatedly slamming a license plate, edge first, into his skull. Wham, wham, wham!" PV immediately gave him a cigarette.

The detriments of a FuNC diet: Perfomances like the fire troupe in pasty white make up and black clothing. They brandished what looked like shish kebab skewers with flaming marshmallows on the end. They danced a gothic sort of dance, waving the flaming marshmallows around. Sometimes they put the flaming marshmallows in their mouths to extinguish them.

This week’s FuNC event is entitled Pirate's Lair and is a benefit for Burning Man Village. PV notes that there is no fire dancing presently scheduled, but still, we stand by our new Medium-Low FuNC diet.

$10 w/o costume & $8 w/costume. 10 PM-ish onwards. 160 N. Canal St (in Fremont).

U-District StreetFair (Sat-Sun). How do you find out details about the U-District Street Fair? My first attempt was www.udsf.org, which took me straight to the home page of the Utah Down Syndrome Foundation. I found that funny – unintentionally funny like pretty much everything related to the U-District Fair. On only three blocks you will find the most impressive collection of junk – the essence of bad taste. Most of the objects that are for sale are unintentionally funny: painted flowerpots, wood ties for your living room – you name it. Last time I went I noticed some activist between all that junk, who were showing pretty brutal videos of tortured animals. They were probably protesting against slaughtering so many animals and turning them into yummy fair food.

In a bigger picture the U-District Fair only opens the season for a series of unintentionally funny fairs. It will end with the mother of all unintentionally funny fairs: the Puyallup Country Fair. If you go don’t forget taking a picture of the Puyallup Music Shop. You won’t miss it. The sign says “PMS”.

U-District Street Fair. University Ave. Saturday + Sunday. Free.

Local design show and sale (Sat-Sun). Local designers and artists are showing jewelry, watercolor prints, shawls and wraps, colorful handmade leather bags. It’s all for sale. Maybe these guys are protesting against the U-District Fair by setting an example of selling quality art products?

The Historic Panama Hotel, Tea & Coffee House, 6051/2 S. Main Street (International District).Saturday 11-5pm and Sunday 12-4pm.Free.

Pratt Auction. Meghan writes: "Milk Oil for Nanolithography," which was originally shown at the Pound Gallery in Negative Geography [February 2002] will be up for auction at Pratt this year. This painting was pictured in Tablet Newspaper # 37 in an article by Tar Del Guidice entitled Negative Geography; Nostalgia for the New.

20th Annual Art Auction at Pratt Fine Arts Center, 5pm-11pm.

Disco Party @ Jason's House. Here at Party Volcano's Research Lab, Evite invitations are analyzed in great detail. Let's see: as of Wednesday evening, 25 guests have confirmed, 25 are bailing out, and 101 are indifferent or don't read their emails. We were wondering about Amanda's comment: "Jeeez, this coincides with the peekaboo party. Can pasties be considered disco these days?"

Disturbed by the possibility of missing out on fun that might be happening somewhere else PV crunched some extra numbers using its huge computerpark. Our systems concluded that there is only little correlation between pasties and disco. Peekaboo Palace on the other hand was reported as a semi-private party for mature audiences, which is by invite only and costs $10. Both results don't make much sense. Maybe it's time to get new machines...

Jason's Pad, 306 S. Brandon St.Seattle (Georgetown). Starts at 7 PM but, doubtless, won't get going until much later. You MUST wear disco clothing to get in.

Heather's 30th Birthday Extravaganza 2002. The house that brought you The Singles Party 2001 invites us to "Heather's 30th Birthday Extravaganza 2002". They believe “that if you can't party with your 100 or more closest and dearest friends, who can you party with? Heather will be 30 and will require some serious spankings. Seeing it on video will never compare to seeing it live and in person.”

Heather’s place - 3705 S. Dawson St in Columbia City. Starts at 8pm. Suggested donation: $5

All-Holiday Party. This sounds like a great party. But it will require some work:

“On may 18th, here at our spacious event facility in the lofts on 3rd and Jackson, prepare to celebrate nearly every major holiday in the American calendar year - all in one evening! It's not just a party, it's a performance art event, a true happening in which you'll frantically switch decorations, change outfits like crazy, drink like fishes, dispense treats and presents and other surprises, and at midnight, the dancing will really kick in! Holidays to be celebrated include valentine's day, mardi gras, purim, st. patrick's day, april fool's day, passover, easter, may day/beltane, mother's day, 4th of july, a random birthday in the middle, halloween, the five minute yom kippur, thanksgiving, chanukah, christmas, and of course, at midnight we celebrate new year's eve!”

Scotto is asking you to RSVP and points out that this is not a spectator event: “You will receive destructions from the organizing committee about any special requirements, otherwise come up with your own approach to each holiday and show up ready to participate… Admission for the event is $10 American, with all proceeds from the door to be donated to the Erowid web site of your choice. Note: this is not an official Erowid event, but we are nevertheless going to throw whatever fat stack of ten spots we collect their direction.”

Party Volcano wishes a Happy New Year!

SIL2K Music Benefit at EL Diablo Café. Chris forwarded this information: Come see Amy Denio and members of the SIL2K Ensemble, Stuart McLeod, Eveline Muller-Graf and James Drage present an installation and performance at the El Diablo coffee house on Queen Anne. Amy Denio will be playing a solo set of some of her latest songs as a special treat, spanning such topics as politics and chickens. Before and after Amy's set, Eveline will be playing her "Boeing" - an instrument she constructed herself from a variety of shinny metal objects and parts of airplanes. Stuart and James will process the sound and output it into a multi-channel swirling atmosphere of sound for your listening pleasure. Don't miss this rare melding of hand-built instruments, electronic processing and song-craft.
