Art Walk in Pioneer Square. It’s that time of month again, First Thursday Art Walk in Pioneer Square, when all the galleries stay open in the evening. The art can definitely be hit or miss, but it’s enjoyable strolling on a nice summer evening. If you are making the rounds stop by 619 Western. It’s an interesting building with tons of artists’ studios and galleries, including Forgotten Works on the fourth floor. This month they feature these two shows: http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/partyvolcano/vwp?.dir=/Invitations&.dnm=june.jpg http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/partyvolcano/vwp?.dir=/Invitation! s&.dnm=june2.jpg

Also, if you want to see photos from a recent fashion show at the Catwalk you can stop by 172 S. Washington for the following: http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/partyvolcano/vwp?.dir=/Invitations&.dnm=photoflyer.jpg&.src=ph&.view=t

First Thursday Art Walk, Various galleries in Pioneer Square, 5 PM until 9 PM-ish

Unusual Cinema @Aftermath. Party Volcano talked with Diana at her yard sale last Sunday. She mentioned Unusual Cinema and pointed out "Gone Tomorrow" by Heather Rogers (San Francisco) - a short documentary that explores the untold story of garbage using archival film. In the same context PV learned from senior Miguel that the biggest tire graveyard of the US is in Texas. Erik once told PV that the largest ant colony is stretching from the Italian Riviera to northwest Spain. There is something about geographical superlatives. Anyway, a group called Naoism will also make a stop at Aftermath for a short screening of some of their award winning, subversive audio/visual works. W/live DJ.

There is even more – check out more details at Aftermath’s site.

Aftermath. 928 12th Ave, on Capitol Hill.(12/Madison near Seattle Academy). 9pm. $5.

SUB_SONIC @ Baltic Room. PV has actually never seen Jason a.k.a. J-Justice spinning. This might be a good opportunity to check it out. He has a pretty large guest list and he will put you on it if you get in touch with him (jjustice@attbi.com). It may help if you mention that Party Volcano is sending you to make sure that everything is strictly “Seattle-Style”.

Also check out the interactive flyer to learn more and play with the music mixer.

Baltic Room 1207 Pine St., 9pm, $5 but hopefully free for you too.

Music Night @ CoCA. CoCA continues it’s Thursday music night. Tonight features “ambient groove improvisation” with a band called Toberomry (includes members of Kickshaw and Built To Spill) and a DJ guest. It’s also a chance to check out the NW Annual Juried Exhibition. CoCA, 1420 11th Ave., 9 PM until Midnight. Free for members. Others $5.

Friday, June 7

Kustom Shoe Multimedia Show @ Kuhlman Clothing Store. Local artists participate in a show inspired by footwear; artists include K.D. Schill who will present her delicious Good & Plenty candy shoes. This should be an interesting show.

It makes PV think about the relationship between women and shoes. PV thought it would be fruitful to host a debate on the subject.

In an interview in The New Yorker Magazine (see http://www.glamnet.com/glamchat/), world famous shoe designer Manolo Blahnik said:

“I understand that some people associate high heels with sex. To me, there is so much more. I happen to love artifice in a woman. Without that, there is no mystery. High heels create artifice. It's the way you walk. You create a motion, a space, it's sinuous. You become a living sculpture. Even if it's not successful sometimes. It's so exciting. It's the transformation that I live for. The sexual part means nothing.”

PV asked noted social critic Scott Greer to respond to Blahnik:

“Sure, he knows his way around a sling back, but when did Barry Manilow become a shoe designer?

‘All right girls, let's move..yes, Gabby, good! Elka, you seem to have a little hitch in your getalong ..let's try more...uh..sinu-ey! Oh, this is exciting! O.K., now become unsuccessful living sculptures- like that! Yes! Suni, you have a little artifice there. Phillipe, get Suni some Tinactin!’

Yes, Barry, it's true. High heels do create mystery (how does she walk in those things?) because they change your locomotion. To make it work right, you need to arch your back (I've heard), and put a little swing in your booty. Right! Now, how can you tell if your cool shoes are sexy? Ask yourself- Will these shoes make me look better nekkid? Low mules? No. Mary Janes? Eh. Five inch Lucite platform stilettos? YES! Bonus: They double as handles!”

Kulman Clothing Store, 2419 First Ave (next to Cyclops), 7 PM, Free.

Critics. Vital 5 is having a group exhibition that will be a lot of fun. Seattle based local artists are showing portraits of fine art critics. “You love them, you despise them, you have no idea who they are, but anyway you slice it, their words define the cultural landscape of our community.” Or as Greg phrased it: “It’s pay back time!” You don’t want to miss this opening.

Vital 5 Productions, 2200 Westlake Ave (on the southeast corner of Westlake and Denny), 7-11pm, free.

Post Opening Party: Marc Lawrence & KeithTabellione. Once again Li'l Red Shack Gallery has picked a bad day for an opening. There is just too much going on this Friday. Three weeks ago Party Volcano was pointing out the opening of Marc Lawrence and Keith Tabellione’s show. Latter was bringing back memories of a friend, who once pretended he had been collecting his fingernails in a big jar for years. If you like music and you happen to be a collector of personal objects you should stop at the Li'l Red Shack Gallery. There will be live music from special guests 3b3, break beat jazz from way out & Tourist, born to ride a test kit, decompression, electrolysis, beats & filters, sound sold separately.

Li'l Red Shack Gallery, 1028 1st Ave S (one block N. of Safeco Field), 7-11pm, free.

Galaxaco Underground Film Night @ Rendezvous Jewel Box Theater. This is what they say: “Galaxaco Underground Film Night! All digital. All local. All hilarious. Featuring the first ever public screening of scenes from Galaxaco's upcoming dark comedy feature 'Hell Hole High' (at midnight). Also George Clark's 'The Dumbass' starring Tad, disturbing videos including the new 'Worst of Galaxaco' tape, and a special meeting of the Seattle Anti-Surveillance Society. Come early (8:30 pm) to catch Galaxaco's 2000 digital comedy feature, 'Doomed Planet'.” Rendezvous Tavern, 2320 2nd Ave (in Belltown), 8:30 to 9:30 PM, Free, www.galaxaco.com

3rd Annual Mexican Wrestling Smack Down @ FuNC. The last we left it, Party Volcano had downgraded to a Medium-Low FuNC diet. However for this event we are zooming up to not just a High, but an Extremely High, FuNC diet. Previous annual Mexican Smack Downs are semi-legendary in this city. PV remembers the delicate 4’11” Kelly Davis starting the Annual Mexican Smack Down tradition, a couple of years ago. She dressed as “El Toro” and went toe to toe with the “Face of Death”--a brutish 6’4”, 280 lb man, completely naked, except for boots and a fearsome leather face mask. Kelly threw the animal down and made him submit. This goes to prove that wrestling is not just about brawn but also about dexterity and brains. If you so desire, you, our dear reading public, can confront the Face of Death, yourself, in the ring this Friday night! Just visit these crazy fuckers’ website and sign up (www.someplace.org)! We reiterate: For this event, Party Volcano is on an Extremely High FuNC diet. FuNC, 160 N. Canal St (Fremont Neighborhood), 9 PM, $7 or $4 w/costume.

Saturday 6/8

Garage Sale in North Seattle. Barbara DePirro recommends this garage sale that Dave Hartz and Astrid are having: “Both of these people are both visual and performing, fire artists. Should be some interesting stuff!” Starts at 9 AM. 95th and Wallingford (one block west of North Seattle Community College).

Olympia Artist Studio Tour @ City of Olympia. Barbara De Pirro sends us info on this studio tour. If you happen to be in the south end, it might be interesting to check out. It’s sponsored by the Parks Dept for the City of Olympia and will feature 15 private artists studios open for public viewing (with purchase of passbook). Passbooks are $5 and include info and a map of studio locations. Passbooks may be purchased downtown at The Olympia Center, Art House Designs, Childhood's End Gallery, State of the Arts Gallery, and on the Westside at Olympia Art & Frame (formerly OPAS). On Sunday, passbooks will only be available at Childhood's End Gallery and Olympia Art & Frame. Unfortunately PV does not have addresses for any of these establishments but we do have a phone #: For more information, call Stephanie Johnson, Arts Program Specialist with the Parks ! Dept, at 360-709-2678. Tour is from 11 AM to 5 PM on both Sat and Sun.

Studio Rental Open House @ SAW. This is more of a public service announcement than an event. If you are looking for an art studio to rent, check it out. This is what SAW says: “Secluded Alley Works is opening several new studio spaces for lease beginning in August. We are hosting an open house at the space from 5-7 pm on Saturday, June 8th. Studios range from small lofts to larger spaces with 13-foot ceilings and skylights. Prices range from $275 to $375 per month, utilities included. There will also be two free scholarship spaces available to emerging artists looking for a studio. All artists will have the opportunity to show in their studios at our monthly openings as well as becoming part of the SAW family. Please contact guy@secludedalleyworks.org for more information and an application.” Secluded Alley Works, 113 12th Ave (cross street Yesler), 5 to 7 PM, www.secludedalleyworks.org

Tony de los Reyes Opening Reception @ Howard House. Howard House consistently puts on very interesting art shows (often far better than the galleries in Pioneer Square). This current show looks to PV like it will be no different. Tony de los Reyes paintings are strangely beautiful, at once baroque and understated. If that sounds like a contradiction check out the photo: http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/partyvolcano/vwp?.dir=/Invitations&.dnm=reyes.jpg

Howard House, 2017 Second Avenue, 6 to 8 PM, free, www.howardhouse.net

Get This Summer Started Party in the CD. This should be a fun, big summer party in the best tradition of fun big summer parties. Or at least we think it will be, because it came to Party Volcano’s attention via the party conduit, Franz, who is perhaps the most connected man in all of Seattle. The hosts say: “Bring something for the bar, and wear a hot outfit.” Also, most intriguingly, they add: “We hope to have the seraglio set up for this launching of the summer season.” A “seraglio” is a harem. This is reason enough for PV to be there. The Brick House: 128 25th Ave (one block off of Yesler in the Central District). 8:30 PM until very late.

“Bombay to Goa” Chaya Benefit Night @ I-Spy. Party Volcano went to one of these Chaya nights at I-Spy last summer and enjoyed it. Not only is Indian electronic music innovative and groovy, this night provides a little glimpse into the hip, young expat/immigrant Indian population in Seattle. Plus, Chaya is a good organization benefiting South Asian women in the Seattle area. Presented by Neverstop, Wake Up, and KEXP. Doors open at 9 PM. $10 before ! 10 PM and $12 after.

Monday 6/10

Open screening @911. Mondays are Party Volcano’s blind spot. Still recovering from the weekend’s hangover it is sometimes too hard to motivate yourself for events like 911’s opening screening. The Stranger has been recommending it for years: "This monthly screening series at 911 is on of the most hit-or-miss events in town: no curators here, merely willing hosts to whoever submits a film. (For only $1, however, it's also on of the best deals.) In a way, the very unevenness of the presentation reflects quite favorably on the best filmmakers, whose works truly stand out as fresh and inspiring after you've sat through three or four duds. And there are few viewing spaces as pleasant as 911, with its series of offices and studios just behind you, and to your right as you watch the films. Even quiet and dark, you can tell it's a place where good work, much good work gets done."

911 117 Yale Ave N., 8pm, $1.

Tuesday June 11

LOOP LOOP: Groove-Oriented Electronic Jazz @ Chop Suey. Notice of this comes from our favorite DJ, J-Justice. This is a new event, every Tuesday at Chop Suey. The idea is to mesh jazz musicians with dj’s and other electronic musicians. PV hasn’t yet checked it out yet, but it does sound interesting. Chop Suey, 1325 E. Madison, 9PM

Friday June 14 (Next Week—But you need to get tix now!)

Loveshack's Go Away Party on Friday June 14.

Handsome but traumatized Scott Greer has this to say about Loveshack parties:

“These parties remind me of my privileged and sheltered young life- a boy coming of age in a beautiful, sleepy village called Bakersfield. My mother would send me down to the 7-11 on my mini-bike. Mona knew I was there for a fresh loaf of Wonder Bread, Kraft American Slices, and a pack of Winston Gold 100's (box). She would sometimes slip a Pixie-Stik into the bag for me. As I buzzed down the dirt road towards home, I would sometimes stop at ‘Chappy's Tavern’. I would ride around back and my friend ‘Clint’ would come out, bring me root beer, and take a smoke break. Clint worked at Chappy's washing dishes and cleaning up. He had come from another town where there had been trouble. He would tell me about how he was going to get his shit together and do something. He really liked my mini-bike! He would sit behind me and hug me real tight- all over...Oh, uh...what was..ok, let's see. Yes, we've reduced our desire for Loveshack parties from ‘mild loathing’ to ‘get me the fuck outta here’.”

However, lovely and gracious Ayesha Ahmed says “I went to a couple of these Loveshack parties last year and they were so fun that I ended up staying longer than I expected. Besides, Danish guys are hot.”

Crazy Martin "Loveshack" Lovschall is moving back to Denmark. To his “Go Away Party” (Danish ESL is so cute), he is inviting 2717 people. PV heard he made special arrangements with evite.com because he max’ed out on the number of people one is allowed to invite. After he’s gone Andrea Martin’s Space City Mixer (was: Pub Mixer) is probably the biggest player in town. PV is curious about what will happen next. Loveshack will definitely create a huge party-vacuum.

The party will start at 8 PM at Fado Irish Pub and then at 10:30 will move to Pier 56 to board “The Party Boat”. Tix are $12 and can be bought by calling Argosy (623-1445 [Tell them you want to book onto the “June 14 Salsa Cruise otherwise known as the Loveshack Go Away Party”]). The reason why we are mentioning it now is because all Cruise parties have sold out. Last one sold out in 5 days before departure, so call now to get your tix.

8 PM Fado’s Irish Pub, 801 First Ave, Free. 10:30 PM Pier 56 - 1101 Alaskan Way., for cruise, $12.
